The best crypto tax software for you is the one that can import your actual exchange, wallet, and blockchain history, reconcile it into a complete record, and produce a report accepted for your tax jurisdiction and filing method. Before buying, check your exact integrations and activity types, review missing-basis and unmatched-transfer warnings, and confirm that the paid plan covers your full transaction count and lets you download the report you need.
A long integrations list or low starting price does not prove that a service handles your data correctly. This comparison explains what to verify, how the named products are positioned in a September 2026 comparison, and what U.S. filers need to know about Form 1099-DA.

There is no universally best option: the right fit depends on where your crypto activity occurred, how complex it is, and which tax forms you must file. Choose by evidence that the software can reconstruct your records—not by an overall score or integration count alone.
A September 2026 Coin Bureau comparison describes several products as serving different needs. Those descriptions are editorial judgments, not an official ranking or an assurance that a product will correctly process your particular transactions.

The table summarizes the comparison publisher’s characterizations; it does not establish comparative accuracy. The same comparison reports that entry pricing commonly starts around $49, but actual cost varies with provider, transaction volume, and plan. Treat that as a broad comparison-page observation, not a quote for a current plan. Prices, caps, and included features can change, so check the provider’s own terms before paying.
Koinly’s Help Center article dated June 23, 2026 says the service imports activity from exchanges, wallets, and blockchains, calculates capital gains and crypto income, and creates country-specific reports. Koinly also says it is not a wallet or broker and cannot provide tax advice or replace an accountant. Those are vendor statements about its scope, not independent verification of its calculations.
What should I check before importing my transactions?
Start with the records you need to report, then confirm that a candidate service can import and reconcile each source. A product-wide count of exchanges or wallets cannot show whether it supports your exact account, chain, API permissions, CSV format, or history period.
Make an inventory of sources and activity
List every exchange, wallet, blockchain, and tax year involved. Include activity that may not appear in a centralized exchange account, such as DeFi interactions, staking, NFTs, bridges, lending, derivatives, mining, and airdrops. Then compare that list with the product’s documented integrations and import options.
Check whether each import covers the dates you need and whether it includes the fields required to identify transfers, fees, acquisitions, and dispositions. If an integration is unavailable or incomplete, ask whether a CSV import is supported and what format it expects. Do not assume that an import labeled “successful” means every transaction is present or correctly classified.
Rank #2
Reconcile rather than simply accept the generated total
Once records are imported, inspect self-transfers, duplicate entries, missing cost basis, negative balances, and transactions the software could not classify. A transfer between wallets you control is not the same record as a sale, but it may appear as an outgoing transaction from one source and an incoming transaction at another. Incorrectly treating it as a taxable disposition can distort the report; failing to connect it can leave the acquired asset’s basis unresolved.
Look for a usable audit trail and the ability to make manual edits. Keep the original statements and exports alongside your corrected records so you can explain how the figures were reached. IRS guidance emphasizes records that support purchase price, basis adjustments, and disposition details.
Does crypto tax software calculate cost basis?
Most tax-reporting tools are designed to organize transaction records and calculate tax items, including gains or losses, but the result depends on complete and correctly categorized data. Software cannot reliably infer an acquisition cost that is absent from the records simply because a later sale is visible.
The IRS defines basis as the amount invested for tax purposes. For a digital asset, basis generally starts with its acquisition cost, including fees and other acquisition costs. If assets moved across accounts, exchanges, or wallets, the information needed to support basis may be split across several records. Check the software’s missing-basis alerts and trace unresolved entries back to source records instead of treating a calculated number as self-validating.
Also confirm that the software supports the country’s rules, tax year, and accounting method relevant to your filing. A report configured for one jurisdiction or method may not be suitable for another. If a choice of method is offered, verify that it is allowed for your situation and that settings are consistent across the records being reported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan crypto tax software handle DeFi, staking, or NFTs?
Some products focus on onchain or complex activity, but support for one category does not guarantee accurate treatment of every transaction in it. Verify the specific chains and activities you used, and review automated classifications before downloading a filing report.
DeFi, bridges, and derivatives
DeFi activity can involve several linked events rather than a simple buy or sell. A bridge, lending action, or derivatives transaction may be imported differently by different sources, and a service may need you to classify or correct an event. Check unmatched records and the detail behind each category; do not assume that an unfamiliar transaction is harmless or non-taxable because the software has assigned it a label.
Staking, mining, and airdrops
These activities can generate records that are not ordinary exchange trades. Verify that the service can import the relevant events and produces the type of income or gain report your jurisdiction requires. Keep supporting records for the date, amount, and source of receipts, especially when the same asset later appears in a disposal.
NFT activity
Confirm that the software recognizes the marketplaces, wallets, and chains involved, and inspect transactions that combine NFT activity with fees or other token transfers. A nominal NFT integration is not proof that every marketplace event has been captured or categorized correctly.
Can crypto tax software import Form 1099-DA?
Some services are described as offering workflows to import or reconcile Form 1099-DA, but the form is not a complete history of all your taxable digital-asset activity. Use any import feature to compare a broker statement against your records, not as a replacement for records from other accounts or wallets.
Rank #4
For U.S. filers, the IRS says broker reporting on Form 1099-DA applies to qualifying digital-asset dispositions effected on or after January 1, 2025. Gross-proceeds reporting applies to relevant 2025 transactions; basis reporting begins in 2026 for certain transactions under a phase-in. The reporting coverage and fields depend on the broker and transaction, so use the IRS instructions for the tax year at issue.
For many 2025 transactions, a Form 1099-DA may show gross proceeds without basis. That means a taxpayer may need to establish basis from their own purchase and transfer records. Importing a statement can help match broker-reported proceeds with transaction history, but it does not establish a missing acquisition cost or account for activity the broker did not report.
The IRS states that taxable digital-asset income, gain, or loss must be reported whether or not a taxpayer receives an information return. For individuals, its FAQ points capital transactions to Form 8949 and then Schedule D as applicable; non-business ordinary income goes on the applicable income-return line or Schedule 1. Form 1099-DA is therefore one input to reconciliation, not a signal that unreported wallet or onchain activity can be ignored.

It can be enough to explore imports or preview calculations, but do not assume that a free account includes a downloadable tax report. The September 2026 comparison describes Koinly’s free option as allowing imports and previews without downloadable reports; check its current plan details and those of any other provider before relying on a free tier.
Before comparing prices, calculate your total account-wide transaction count and find out how each provider counts transactions. Then confirm the paid plan that includes report downloads for that volume. A low advertised starting price may cover only a smaller history, while a higher-volume plan or add-on may be needed to file. Compare the final cost for the report you need, not just the entry price or the ability to connect an account.

How do I choose and use a crypto tax tool?
Use a short test process before treating any generated report as filing-ready. The goal is to see whether the tool can produce a complete, reviewable record at a price and in a format that fit your filing situation.
- Define the filing requirement. Identify your country, tax year, expected report or forms, and filing route, including whether you need a tax-software export or an accountant-access option.
- Inventory your data. List every exchange, wallet, blockchain, and activity type, then identify missing statements or inaccessible accounts before starting an import.
- Check integrations and history. Verify the exact sources, import methods, and date coverage in the provider’s current documentation. Ask about gaps rather than assuming a listed integration includes every record.
- Import and reconcile. Review self-transfers, duplicates, missing basis, negative balances, and uncategorized transactions. Compare totals and selected transaction details with original source records.
- Confirm the report and price. Check the required report format, transaction cap, download eligibility, and any extra fees for the plan that covers your full history.
- Review the output. Inspect the tax-year settings, accounting method, classifications, and supporting detail before using the report for a return. Save the source statements and the corrected transaction history.
Use human help when records are incomplete, activity is complex, or classifications remain unresolved. Ask exactly what “review” includes: checking crypto records is not necessarily the same as preparing and filing a complete tax return. For example, a software service may organize records while leaving tax advice or return preparation to a separate professional.
What are the main limits of crypto tax software?
Software can reduce manual organization, but a report is only as reliable as its inputs, rules, and review. Three limits matter when deciding how much to rely on the output.
- Incomplete source data: Missing accounts, partial exports, and unsupported activity can make the transaction history incomplete even when the software produces a polished report.
- Automated classification: An imported transaction may need human interpretation, especially for onchain activity or unusual transfers. Review the underlying event rather than accepting labels without context.
- Scope of service: Reporting software is not automatically tax advice or full return preparation. Koinly’s Help Center explicitly says it cannot provide tax advice or replace an accountant; confirm the scope of any other service directly with its provider.
IRS guidance is the primary authority for federal reporting obligations; software feature summaries are not. Treat platform comparisons as a way to shortlist tools, then validate the specific integrations, plans, and report outputs that apply to your account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to report crypto if I did not receive a 1099-DA?
Yes, if you had taxable digital-asset activity. The IRS says the reporting obligation applies whether or not you receive a payee statement or information return; keep records that support the transaction and its tax treatment.
Can I use one crypto tax report for two countries?
Do not assume so. Country-specific reports may apply different rules and formats, so confirm that the provider supports each jurisdiction and tax year you need to file for.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I give a crypto tax service my exchange password?
Check the provider’s documented connection method and permissions before linking an account. Prefer the least access needed to retrieve records, and use an export when that is the supported option; never share a password merely because an import is failing.
What records should I keep after filing crypto taxes?
Keep exchange and wallet transaction histories, statements, records supporting acquisition cost and fees, and the reconciled report used to prepare the return. The IRS says records should support purchase price, basis adjustments, and disposition details.
