Crunchyroll is an anime specialist: it emphasizes a large licensed library and episodes arriving soon after they air in Japan. Netflix is a general entertainment service with anime originals, selected licensed series, and a changing catalog alongside films and other TV. That distinction matters most when choosing between following a show week by week and waiting to binge a finished season.
Crunchyroll says its 2026 library includes 50,000+ episodes, 25,000 hours, and 2,000 series and films. Those are company figures for its dedicated anime library, not a promise that every title is available in every country. Netflix does not publish a stable, comparable count of anime titles. Its catalog changes by territory and over time, so a precise head-to-head title-count comparison is not available.

For US viewers, Crunchyroll’s library includes many currently airing seasonal shows and long-running or recent hits such as One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren, and Solo Leveling. Netflix has originals and exclusive titles such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Pluto, and Devilman Crybaby, alongside licensed anime such as Beastars and Violet Evergarden. Some popular older series overlap between services, but overlap depends on the title, season, and country.
That means a large service-wide library number cannot answer the question “Where can I watch this show?” A title might be available on both services in one country, on only one service in another, or on neither. Netflix’s catalog is smaller in specialist focus and changes by country, but it has anime that Crunchyroll may not carry.
Crunchyroll’s range includes seasonal simulcasts, long-running series, recent hits, classics, films, and titles that are available in subtitled and dubbed versions. It also includes gaps. Examples identified in coverage include Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and newer Tokyo Revengers episodes being on other services rather than Crunchyroll in the relevant market. Use the release pattern, not just the service’s name, to decide. If you want to keep up with several seasonal shows as they air, Crunchyroll is the more dependable starting point. If you mainly want a finished season, a Netflix original, or a dub available on day one, check Netflix first. Specific schedules vary by title, and a Netflix show’s release pattern should not be assumed to apply to every anime on the service.
How do subtitles and English dubs compare?
Crunchyroll offers both subtitles and dubs, but its simulcast model makes subtitles the faster route for many new episodes. Netflix originals tend to be more dub-ready on their release date. Neither service guarantees a particular language track for every show or country.

The service’s FAQ confirms that it offers subtitled and dubbed anime, while published coverage notes that audio and subtitle choices vary by title and region. When a title has multiple tracks, use the player’s Audio or Subtitle options to select among them. For PlayStation viewing, set account language preferences on web or mobile if useful, then check the options in the console player for the episode you are watching. There is no reason to assume every title exposes identical choices in the PS4 and PS5 interfaces.
Netflix originals often have English dubs on day one, which can be a meaningful advantage for viewers who prefer dubbed audio. How much do Crunchyroll and Netflix cost in the United States?
As of October 2026, Crunchyroll Fan is the cheapest US way to watch its anime library without ads. Netflix has a slightly cheaper entry price, but its $8.99 plan includes ads and some titles are locked on that tier. Crunchyroll’s 2026 US monthly prices are $9.99, $13.99, and $17.99 for Fan, Mega Fan, and Ultimate Fan. The Fan price rose from $7.99 to $9.99, the first Fan-tier increase since 2019. All three paid Crunchyroll plans are ad-free and include the licensed library and new episodes shortly after Japan. Fan is designed for one simultaneous stream, so two people cannot watch different shows at once on that tier, even if the account has separate profiles. Crunchyroll offers up to five profiles, but profiles do not raise the stream limit. Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan makes more sense for a household that wants to watch at the same time.
Crunchyroll advertises annual billing as a 16% saving. The 2026 listed annual rates are $99.99 for Fan, $139.99 for Mega Fan, and $179.99 for Ultimate Fan, versus $119.88, $167.88, and $215.88 if paid monthly for a year. Promotional annual offers may have a different introductory price and then renew at a regular rate, so read the checkout terms. Crunchyroll also offers a standard seven-day Premium trial to eligible new subscribers; the offer is one trial per customer. Canceling a trial ends Premium access immediately, while canceling a paid subscription generally leaves access active through the paid period.
Netflix’s US rates in this comparison are $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard, and $26.99 for Premium. Standard with ads costs a dollar less than Crunchyroll Fan and allows two screens, but it has advertisements and some titles may be locked. Netflix Standard without ads costs twice as much as Crunchyroll Fan. Premium is the Netflix tier that offers 4K HDR and four screens, but this does not establish that every anime title is encoded in 4K on PlayStation.
For both services, the lowest US monthly combination is about $19: Crunchyroll Fan at $9.99 plus Netflix Standard with ads at $8.99. If you want ad-free viewing on both, Crunchyroll Mega Fan plus Netflix Standard is about $34 a month. A lower-cost strategy for someone who wants both catalogs is to keep Crunchyroll during seasonal anime and add Netflix only for a month when a particular original or finished season is available.
The free ad-supported Crunchyroll on-demand library ended on 31 December 2025. Treat claims that a free ad-supported tier is still available as outdated; the current comparison is among paid plans and any eligible trial. Prices are market-specific: do not apply these US amounts to another PlayStation Store region.
What do Crunchyroll and Netflix cost in Southeast Asia and Brazil?
PlayStation billing and pricing can vary by country. The October 2026 launch of Crunchyroll subscriptions through PlayStation Media Hub was specifically for Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand; it was not the worldwide debut of the PlayStation app.

The PlayStation.Blog announcement describes Mega Fan in those three markets as ad-free, with four simultaneous streams, offline downloads on supported devices, and access to Game Vault, which has more than 100 anime-inspired mobile games. “Supported devices” should not be read as confirmation that episodes can be downloaded to a PS4 or PS5; no current official PlayStation download support is confirmed.
In Malaysia, reported annual Crunchyroll prices were RM91.90 for Fan and RM106.90 for Mega Fan, roughly 40% below paying each monthly rate for a year. In Brazil, late-October 2026 reports listed Crunchyroll Fan at R$19.90 and Mega Fan at R$24.90 per month. The same reports listed Netflix with ads at R$25.90, Standard at R$51.90, and Premium at R$71.90; Brazil’s Netflix rates had been raised on 15 October 2026. Can you watch Crunchyroll and Netflix on PS5 and PS4?
Yes. Both services have PlayStation apps, and Crunchyroll is listed for PS4 and PS5. The October 2026 PlayStation Store launch was a new way to subscribe through Media Hub in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand; it should not be mistaken for the first availability of Crunchyroll on PlayStation worldwide.
For either service, use the PlayStation Store on your console to find and download the official app, then sign in to an account with the appropriate subscription. The exact subscription and payment options shown depend on your country and account region. The app being available does not mean every title, plan, or billing route is identical in each market.

In Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, the announced Crunchyroll flow is: download the app from PlayStation Store, allow Sony to share account information, create or link a Crunchyroll account, and pay with PlayStation Wallet. The store sells Mega Fan in those markets. In Malaysia and Indonesia, Fan was reported as available through a QR-based signup route rather than as the PlayStation Store tier; check the current on-screen offer before choosing. Once a PlayStation-billed subscription is connected to a Crunchyroll account, keep track of which company bills it.
If you subscribe through PlayStation, manage or cancel the subscription through the PlayStation billing route. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. If you paid Crunchyroll directly on its website or another platform, cancel through that billing provider instead. Check your confirmation receipt or account subscription page if you are unsure who handles renewal.
Does Netflix look better than Crunchyroll on a 4K TV?
Netflix has the higher maximum picture tier in this comparison: Premium includes 4K HDR. Crunchyroll’s listed console picture quality is 1080p, with no 4K tier at any price. On a 4K television connected to PS5, Netflix Premium may therefore be the better fit if the specific title is available in 4K and picture resolution is a priority.
Do not assume that every anime on Netflix is available in 4K HDR simply because the account is Premium. No current official title-by-title list of Netflix anime encodes on PS5 is published. Resolution can depend on the title and playback conditions. If 4K is central to the decision, check the specific title’s playback information rather than relying only on the subscription tier.
Also consider the cost difference: Netflix Premium costs $26.99 per month in the US, compared with $9.99 for Crunchyroll Fan. That premium buys broader Netflix plan features, including four screens and 4K HDR availability, not a promise that every anime will benefit from the added resolution. For many anime-only viewers, the larger catalog or faster release schedule is likely more important than 4K.

Choose Fan if one person watches on the account and wants ad-free anime on the console. It is the lowest-priced paid Crunchyroll tier in the US, includes one simultaneous stream, and now includes downloads on one device. That download feature should not be confused with downloading episodes to the console; no confirmed PS4 or PS5 offline-playback support is established here.

Choose Mega Fan if multiple people may stream at once or if the additional benefits matter. It allows four simultaneous streams and includes Game Vault and broader download benefits. In Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, Mega Fan is the PlayStation Store subscription tier cited at launch. Ultimate Fan offers six simultaneous streams and additional perks such as manga and higher store benefits, but a household should compare those extras with the $17.99 US monthly price rather than upgrading simply because it owns a PlayStation.
A profile is not a stream. Crunchyroll’s up-to-five-profile feature helps separate recommendations or maturity settings, but Fan still permits only one person to stream at a time. Netflix Standard with ads and Standard allow two screens; Premium allows four. If the key issue is two family members watching simultaneously, compare stream limits, not the number of profiles.

It can be, if the shows you care about are missing from Netflix or you want to watch current seasons close to their Japanese broadcasts. If anime is occasional and Netflix already covers your household’s watchlist, another monthly bill may add little. Make the decision using named titles, not a general claim that one service has “more anime.”
Crunchyroll is easiest to justify when you follow several current shows, want English subtitles quickly, watch long-running series, or want ad-free anime below $10 in the US. Netflix is easier to justify when it is already in the household budget, the watchlist centers on Netflix originals or finished-season binges, you want a broader mix of films and TV, or someone wants Netflix Premium’s 4K plan.
Paying for both is reasonable when they cover different shows you will actually watch. A useful test is to list the next few titles you expect to watch and check each one’s current service, country availability, and subtitle or dub choices. If Netflix is needed only for a major release, a month-to-month subscription rotation can be cheaper than maintaining two services all year. What should you check before subscribing on PlayStation?
- Confirm the exact title and season. Search in the app for the show you plan to watch, and verify the season as well as the series name. Rights can differ by country and season.
- Check the language tracks. Confirm audio, subtitles, and—if required—closed captions on the specific title. Do not infer language availability from another show or market.
- Match the release schedule to how you watch. Crunchyroll is generally suited to weekly subtitled episodes; Netflix is often better for its own originals and finished-season binges.
- Compare ads, streams, and picture quality. The cheapest Netflix US tier has ads and some locked titles; Crunchyroll Fan is ad-free but has one stream. Netflix 4K is a Premium feature, while Crunchyroll’s reported console maximum is 1080p.
- Check who bills you. PlayStation Store, Crunchyroll directly, and other subscription routes are not interchangeable for cancellation. Keep the renewal receipt.
- Do not count on console downloads. Mobile-device download benefits are not proof of offline playback on PS4 or PS5.

Can I use one Crunchyroll account on PS4 and PS5?
