Yes. The original Crossy Road from Hipster Whale is free to download and play. Its endless hop-and-dodge mode does not require a payment, but the free-to-play model includes interstitial video ads, optional rewarded ads, random character unlocks and one-time in-app purchases. Classic runs work without Wi-Fi; ads, the daily Pecking Order competition, some leaderboards and store transactions need an internet connection. You can reduce interruptions by buying any regular character, or remove every ad with the separate Ad Blocker Pack. This article covers the original iOS, Android and Amazon version (App Store ID 924373886; Android package com.yodo1.crossyroad), not Crossy Road Castle, the discontinued Disney game or the separate Apple Arcade title Crossy Road Rush.
Is Crossy Road actually free to play?
Yes, in the normal freemium sense: the download is listed as Free, and the core crossing game is playable without spending money. Both Google Play and the App Store label the game with advertising and in-app purchases. You can make runs, earn coins, collect characters and set local high scores without buying a pack or subscription.

Google Play marks the app as containing ads and “in-game purchases (includes random items).” The random-item disclosure refers mainly to the prize machine, where 100 soft-currency coins buy a random character result and duplicates are possible. There is no battle pass or recurring subscription inside the original game; character purchases and the Piggy Bank are one-time transactions.
Hipster Whale’s store copy says “Free to play” and “Play offline games.” Its pages claim more than 300 characters, more than 28 worlds and 250 million players worldwide; the player figure is a developer marketing claim rather than an independently audited count. Google Play’s more conservative public milestone is 100M+ downloads (2026), with a 4.6 average from about 3.72 million reviews. The App Store shows 4.7 out of 5 from roughly 740,000 ratings.

What ads does Crossy Road show?
There are two distinct ad systems, and confusing them explains many complaints about “forced” advertising.
- Autoplay or interstitial ads: video ads can appear at run transitions. You did not choose to watch these, so they are the interruptions players usually mean by forced ads.
- Rewarded ads: optional videos offer a coin banner, gift, score doubler, character re-roll or Pecking Order token. You choose whether to claim the reward by watching.
A November 2024 manual review by Pixalate described videos at gameplay transitions plus additional opt-in videos for coins and prizes, often promoting other mixed-audience games. Availability and frequency vary with the ad network, region, age settings and connection. If rewarded videos stop appearing, Hipster Whale’s support guidance says the network may have reached a daily cap; waiting about 24 hours can restore availability.

That is why an offline session can remove transition videos, but it also removes the ability to claim video-based bonuses. If an ad is inappropriate, the support FAQ asks players to report it to [email protected] and include the device platform. Android-wide ad-blocking tools are not a reliable fix: Hipster Whale says ad blockers can prevent the game from working properly.
How do I remove ads in Crossy Road?
There are three practical approaches, each with a different result.
- Play offline or use airplane mode. With no network connection, ads cannot load, so Classic runs normally without transition videos. This is a player workaround, not an in-game purchase; rewarded coins, gifts and online features are unavailable until you reconnect.
- Buy any regular character. Hipster Whale’s support FAQ states that purchasing a regular character removes autoplay ads forever. Rewarded ads can still be offered, so this is the cheaper option if you only want to stop interruptions between runs.
- Buy the Ad Blocker Pack. The pack removes all ads permanently, including both autoplay and rewarded placements. The game still grants the rewards that would have appeared: coin banners, gifts, doublers, character re-rolls and future placements. The purchase also unlocks the Ad Fighter and Ad Buster characters, which are not prize-machine drops.
The official explanation is in Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road Support FAQ. The FAQ also says that parental controls can use the Ad Blocker Pack so a child receives the normal rewards without being shown an ad.
Prices are store- and region-dependent. A community-maintained 2026 listing reports about $7.99 on iPhone and $8.49 on Android for the Ad Blocker Pack, while a 2025 Google Play review described a price near $9. Treat those as examples, not a universal US price; check the live purchase sheet on your device before paying. The official FAQ confirms the behavior, not a fixed worldwide price.

Is the Ad Blocker Pack worth it?
It is the only in-app option that removes every ad while preserving ad rewards automatically. If you play often, dislike all video interruptions and want the two exclusive mascots, it is the most complete solution. If you only object to interstitials, buying a regular roughly $0.99 character (US App Store examples include Fortune Chicken, Festive Chicken and Flat Eric) removes autoplay ads at a much lower cost, although opt-in rewarded placements remain.
The Piggy Bank is a different purchase. The support FAQ calls it a premium character available only through an in-app purchase; the US App Store lists it at $2.99. Community documentation describes a starting coin grant and doubled coin rewards, but it does not remove ads. A Piggy Bank purchase therefore suits players who want faster currency rather than a quiet, ad-free game.
What in-app purchases are available?

The App Store has also shown $0.00 entries such as PAC-MAN and Shooty Cat, consistent with promotional or event unlocks rather than a standing price. A secondary listing has reported a broad $0.49–$29.99 range for various items, but that is a snapshot, not a current universal price. Store tax, currency and limited-time events can all change the amount displayed to you.
Purchases are not subscriptions and do not auto-renew. On iOS, some in-app purchases may be shareable through Family Sharing. Restore Purchases restores eligible paid transactions, not characters won from the prize machine.
How can I unlock characters without paying?
Most of the collection can be earned through play. Run the course to collect yellow coins, claim daily rewards and use optional rewarded videos when online. Spend 100 coins at the prize machine for a random result. Every remaining machine character can be selected by the machine, but duplicates remain possible, especially as your collection grows; Hipster Whale’s FAQ explicitly warns that each spin can return a character you already own.
Secret characters, event rewards and daily-mode rewards provide other free routes. Pecking Order, the daily competition, can award tokens through participation and ranking, but it needs a connection and is not available in a fully offline session. A smaller group of premium or limited mascots is purchase-only, so “all characters for free” is not a promise the game makes.

Buying a character does not buy coins or guarantee a particular future prize-machine result. If you change ecosystems, paid purchases can usually be restored within that ecosystem, but progress and prize-machine wins do not transfer between iOS, Android and Amazon devices.
Can I play Crossy Road offline or on a plane?
Yes. Classic endless runs, local high scores and already-unlocked characters work without Wi-Fi. Same-device multiplayer also works offline: the main tab’s Chicken and Mallard icons let two people share one device. This is different from Wi-Fi multiplayer, which Hipster Whale says is no longer offered.

Offline play has predictable limits:
- Autoplay and rewarded videos cannot load.
- You cannot claim ad-based coins, gifts, doublers or re-rolls while disconnected.
- Pecking Order’s daily competition, online leaderboard updates and some gift synchronization require a connection.
- Store purchases may wait for a connection to complete or restore.
That makes airplane mode useful for a quiet flight, train ride or data-saving session, but it slows free character collection because one source of bonus currency disappears. An older guide that advertises local Wi-Fi matches is out of date relative to the current support FAQ; use same-device play instead.
What phones and platforms support the game?
The live store listing is the best test of whether a new installation is supported today. As of the October 2026 listings:
- iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and iMessage: free with in-app purchases; the App Store requires iOS/iPadOS 15 or later. The listed download is about 281.7 MB. The older FAQ’s iOS 13 statement may describe historical compatibility, not the current store requirement.
- Android: Google Play lists Everyone, ads, random-item purchases and 100M+ downloads. The FAQ documents Android 5.1/API 22 with OpenGL ES 3 or Vulkan, but a current device may face a newer store-side requirement; check the install page for your model. Google Play showed an update on 28 October 2026, including Halloween/Fall event content.
- Amazon Fire: Hipster Whale documents Fire OS 5.0 or later with OpenGL ES 3 or Vulkan. The Amazon listing supports game controllers and the Fire TV Voice Remote.
The FAQ lists English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic; the App Store also lists Indonesian. Version numbers and event content can differ slightly by platform, so an update date on one store is not a guarantee that every storefront shows the same build.
Is Crossy Road suitable for children?
Ratings differ by storefront: the App Store shows 9+ with infrequent cartoon or fantasy violence, advertising and in-app purchases; Google Play shows Everyone with Comic Mischief and random-item purchase disclosure. European Play listings have also shown PEGI 3. Hipster Whale’s privacy policy says the games are not aimed at children under 13, while acknowledging that the visual style may appeal to children.

An age gate changes data handling: users who enter an age under 13 do not receive targeted advertising, and the policy says personally identifiable information is not collected from them. The game remains playable, but parents should still review purchases and online features. In Classic mode settings (top-left), parental controls can disable the daily Pecking Order so the child does not appear on an online leaderboard. Buying the Ad Blocker Pack removes ad presentation while leaving the corresponding rewards available.
Because the prize machine grants random characters and duplicates, Google Play’s “includes random items” label is important for family discussions. Set purchase authentication on the device rather than relying only on the game’s prompts.

Crossy Road Rush is not an ad-removal mode or an upgrade inside the original app. It is a separate Hipster Whale game announced for Apple Arcade, with a planned 5 November 2026 launch. Apple Arcade games are covered by the Arcade subscription and do not use ads or in-app purchases; the standalone Arcade price reported for 2026 is $6.99 per month, or it can be included in Apple One.
Rush is an island-adventure experience designed for solo or up to four-player local and online sessions. The original free-to-play Crossy Road remains the one with the classic endless hopper, ad-supported progression and same-device multiplayer. Choose based on the platform and format you want rather than expecting the subscription title to change the economics of the original.

For most people, the bottom line is simple: you can play the original Crossy Road indefinitely without paying, including offline. Pay only if the ad behavior, faster collection or a specific premium mascot is worth the cost to you.
What should I do if a purchase or save is missing?
On iOS, sign in with the same Apple ID/iCloud account and use Settings > Support > Restore Purchases; the FAQ notes that several games (sometimes up to 12) may be needed before a save appears. On Android, Google Play can restore purchases and Play Games can sync progress, but coins do not sync through Play Games. Cross-platform transfer is not supported: an iOS save cannot be moved to Android or Amazon, and vice versa. For refunds, Apple handles iOS requests directly; Google Play requests should be sent from in-game Settings with the GPA order number or the Gmail account used for payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Crossy Road progress from iPhone to Android?
No. The support FAQ says saves cannot be transferred across platforms, even though each ecosystem can restore its own purchases. Keep the original Apple, Google or Amazon account available when reinstalling on the same platform.

Duplicates are part of the machine’s random design, not a failed purchase. Each 100-coin spin can award any machine character, including one already in your collection; the chance of repeats becomes more noticeable as fewer characters remain.
Does turning on airplane mode delete my coins or characters?
No. Offline mode simply prevents network features and videos from loading. Your local runs and unlocked characters remain available, but online rewards, leaderboards and pending store transactions wait until the connection returns.
How do I stop a child from appearing on the daily leaderboard?
Open Classic mode settings from the top-left menu and disable the daily level (Pecking Order). This removes the online daily competition while leaving the regular offline hopper available; parental controls can also be used alongside the all-ads removal option.
