Cronos: Lazarus is a paid prequel expansion for Cronos: The New Dawn. It follows the Collective’s Pathfinder on a forbidden mission to revive a lost Essence, and shows his transformation into the Warden who guides the Traveler in the base game. The expansion is not a sequel or a standalone game: you need the base game, and the story is designed to change how you understand its Terminal, its Warden, and the Lazarus Protocol.

How does the Lazarus DLC fit into the Cronos story?
Lazarus fills in the story before Cronos: The New Dawn. You play as the Pathfinder, an agent of the Collective who has been cut off from it and is trying to awaken a lost Essence. The Collective sends the Tracker to stop him. The expansion follows the Pathfinder’s move from loyal agent to the Warden encountered in the base game.
That makes it a character prequel, not a continuation of the Traveler’s journey. Bloober Team described the expansion as “the missing piece of lore” about the Warden’s evolution and the Collective. That is a useful description of its role: it adds context to a person and a mystery already present in the main game, rather than replacing or extending the base game’s endings.

The official story trailer’s tagline, “Defy the Calling. Bring her back,” sums up the conflict without revealing the lost Essence’s name. The Pathfinder believes something must survive, even if he does not. The Collective frames his choice as betrayal of the Calling it gave him. What the prequel asks is not whether he becomes the Warden—the main game establishes that he does—but what he gives up and defies along the way.
What happens in the story before Lazarus?
The prequel’s “before” makes more sense when set against the base game’s world. Cronos: The New Dawn takes place in an alternate version of 1980s Poland, where a disease called the Change brings humanity to an end. The later wasteland is the setting in which the Collective sends Travelers back to the time of the catastrophe.
Travelers seek specific people and extract their Essences for the Collective. Lead writer Grzegorz Like described them as emissaries sent to the end of the world to find people the organization needs. He also cautioned that the process is not benevolent: “And because we’re taking away the souls of human beings, don’t expect it to be a nice thing.”
In the base game, the player is Traveler ND-3576, who wakes in the ruined future and receives guidance from the Warden at the Terminal. The Warden’s assigned role is to maintain the Travelers’ tools and the Terminal hub. Lazarus moves the viewpoint to an earlier moment, when that same figure is still operating as the Pathfinder inside the Terminal and is beginning to turn against the organization that gave him his role.
Base-game spoilers: who is the Warden before the main game?
Base-game spoilers begin here. The Pathfinder and the Warden are the same person. The base game and post-launch story explanations identify the woman behind his revival mission as Dr. Weronika Kamiński. Official Lazarus materials available on 29 October 2026 describe her only as a “lost Essence”; they do not name her. The identification comes from the base game’s story, not from the pre-release DLC description.

In the base-game reconstruction, the Pathfinder became attached to Weronika, an extraction target he believed should be preserved because she might find a cure. He resisted the Collective’s plan to complete her Vocation and tried to keep her alive. This is the personal motive behind the prequel’s “Bring her back” tagline, but the distinction in evidence matters: the DLC’s official copy confirms a forbidden revival of a female Essence, while the name Weronika comes from the existing game and published story explanations.
The base-game clues also connect that mission to the machine named in the DLC title. The game opens with an automated voice announcing that the Lazarus Protocol has been engaged as ND-3576 wakes. Base-game story explanations describe the Pathfinder as trying to preserve what he could of Weronika through the Protocol, while the Traveler unknowingly carries her Essence. In that sense, the DLC’s revival mission is not an unrelated new plot: it is the origin story for a system and a conflict the main game has already put in motion.
That does not mean every detail of the prequel’s plot is known in advance. As of 29 October 2026, the full story, its runtime, and whether the game itself names Weronika had not been published. The expansion’s marketing establishes the mission and its stakes, but not how each event unfolds or exactly what the Pathfinder sacrifices.
What is the Lazarus Protocol in Cronos: The New Dawn?
In the base-game story, the Lazarus Protocol is tied to the Pathfinder’s effort to keep Weronika’s Essence from being lost. It is also the automated process associated with ND-3576’s awakening. The prequel title therefore refers to more than a general resurrection theme: it points to the mechanism and mission that connect the Warden’s past to the Traveler’s beginning.
The underlying conflict is deliberately uneasy. The Collective dispatches Travelers to extract Essences it considers important, but the Pathfinder’s attempt to save one Essence is a personal act of defiance—not simply a routine Collective assignment. ND-3576’s role in the base game makes the consequences harder to reduce to a conventional rescue story: the Traveler is caught up in a process begun by the Pathfinder, while the Pathfinder believes he is protecting someone from being lost.

The base game has several endings, and the prequel should not be treated as a promise to resolve or replace them. In the shoot ending, the Traveler kills the Pathfinder and Weronika is sent back into the past as the Change arrives. In the spare ending, the Pathfinder extracts Weronika again against her wishes. In the secret “Begin Anew” ending, available in New Game Plus, the Traveler takes Weronika forward while the Pathfinder is left behind and a new Vocation begins. Those outcomes belong to the base game; Lazarus is positioned before them.
Who is the Tracker in Cronos Lazarus?
The Tracker is the Collective’s hunter, sent to find and eliminate the Pathfinder before he can complete the revival mission. Unlike a threat whose identity is simply a mystery to solve, the Tracker gives the prequel a chase-and-confrontation structure: the Pathfinder is isolated in the Terminal while a pursuer with a direct mandate closes in.
Steam describes the Tracker as relentless, adaptive, and capable of matching the Warden’s strength, with fights escalating into large-scale cinematic encounters. That makes the conflict a useful counterpoint to the base game. The Traveler explores a hostile world while learning its rules; the Pathfinder is already an elite agent, but his former organization now treats him as an error to erase.
The story trailer underlines the split in perspective. A voice associated with the Tracker and Collective accuses the Pathfinder of betraying the Calling; the Pathfinder answers that he is keeping something alive, “Even if I don’t.” The game’s material does not establish the Tracker’s fate, so theories about the hunter’s later identity or equipment should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed continuity.

How does Lazarus change the gameplay?
The DLC keeps the third-person survival-horror setting but pitches a faster, more aggressive combat style than the Traveler’s campaign. The Traveler’s combat emphasizes precision and choosing when to fight; the Pathfinder is an elite agent who can reposition quickly and press an attack. That difference supports the story: the player is not controlling a newcomer piecing together the Collective’s methods, but someone trained within its system who has turned those capabilities toward a forbidden goal.

What tools does the Pathfinder use?
- Teleportation: lets the Pathfinder reposition rapidly during fights.
- Decoy: distracts enemies and briefly cloaks the Pathfinder, providing a way to break an enemy’s attention.
- Gladius: a faster, deadlier melee evolution of the original game’s dagger—not a firearm.
A July 2026 developer deep dive described the decoy-and-teleport combination as a way to control groups of Orphans. The Pathfinder is also described as scarred, broken, and not at full strength, so the more forceful combat style does not mean he is invulnerable. It is a different set of tools and rhythm, not evidence that the horror or danger has disappeared.
Should I play Lazarus before or after Cronos: The New Dawn?
For most players, the clearest order is to finish Cronos: The New Dawn first, then play Lazarus. The expansion’s official description refers to “the Warden you know and love from the base game,” and the base game presents his identity and the Protocol as mysteries. Playing the prequel first would reveal the motives behind that mystery before the Traveler encounters him.

The play styles also differ. The Traveler is a quieter, less-informed protagonist managing scarce ammunition and burning corpses before they can Merge. The Pathfinder is more talkative and uses teleportation, decoys, and the Gladius to fight more aggressively. Playing the base game first makes that contrast part of the prequel’s effect: you move from the person caught up in the Protocol to the person who set it in motion.
Do I need the base game, and when does Lazarus release?
Yes. Cronos: Lazarus is paid story DLC and requires Cronos: The New Dawn on the same platform. It is not a standalone release. The base game launched on 5 September 2025, with Early Access beginning on 3 September 2025.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe announced a $9.99 price on 28 October 2026. The dedicated Steam DLC listing did not show a public price when checked on 29 October, so the Steam price was not confirmed in that listing. An ambiguous $14.99 figure beside the DLC on the base-game Steam page may refer to the Deluxe Edition Upgrade; it should not be treated as a confirmed price for Lazarus. Bandai Namco also announced a 50% Halloween-season discount for the base game across major storefronts, with sale dates varying by platform; on Steam, the listed offer ended 2 November 2026.

The 30 GB figure is a listed requirement and may have been copied from the base game; it is not a separately verified install-size measurement for the expansion. No official runtime or review score had been published as of 29 October 2026.
There is one date discrepancy worth knowing if you check the game’s official marketing page: it still said “Coming Fall 2026” on 29 October, despite the more specific December 3 announcement. The publisher’s release announcement and the official trailer description give the December date; the Switch 2 window remains Q1 2027.
What should players expect from the prequel?
Expect a story about the Warden’s transformation and the cost of choosing a personal mission over the Collective’s rules, told through a more aggressive combat setup than the Traveler’s campaign. Expect the central revival to connect directly to the base game’s opening and mysteries. Do not assume, before release, that every fan theory is confirmed or that the expansion will settle every question raised by the three base-game endings.
Bloober Team said actor Alan Turkington would return to the Warden role. The studio also described the story as darker and more personal, involving rebellion, inner conflict, and the cost of defying the Collective. Since the DLC is scheduled for 3 December 2026, those descriptions set expectations, not a substitute for the still-unpublished full plot.
