Yes—CRKD Nitro Deck 2 is worth considering if you play Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode often and value a substantial grip, adjustable sticks and extra controls more than low weight. Its CaptiStick thumbsticks, clicky buttons and remappable rear inputs make it unusually configurable. The trade-off is significant: the controller weighs 363g by itself, makes the console-heavy to hold, can trigger its rear buttons accidentally, and introduces charging and reconnection inconveniences.

What is the CRKD Nitro Deck 2?

Nitro Deck 2 is a clamp-on handheld controller designed first for Nintendo Switch 2. CRKD says it is also backward compatible with the original Switch and Switch OLED, and supports PC, mobile devices and select smart TVs over Bluetooth or USB-C. A removable centerpiece lets you use the controls as a separate, pro-style controller when the console is docked.

Unlike a Joy-Con replacement that slides onto rails, the deck secures the console with a retractable locking dial. The Switch 2 fit was found secure by TechRadar, although opening the game-card flap can be fiddly. Its metal kickstand feels sturdy and folds into the rear.

Is Nitro Deck 2 worth it?

It is a strong buy for frequent handheld players who want more control adjustment and a fuller grip. It is harder to justify for occasional players, travelers who prioritize compact weight, or anyone who expects the console to remain ready for its normal dock.

  • DRIFT-FREE CAPTISTICK TECHNOLOGY - Built with the magnetic Joy-Con connection in mind, the Nitro Deck 2 uses capacitor-based sensors not magnets, to deliver true drift-free precision with zero worry of electromagnetic interference. Similar to Hall Effect alternatives, CaptiSticks won't degrade over time and adjustable resistance per stick means you tune it to your perfect feel.
  • TWO PRODUCTS IN ONE: HANDHELD GRIP AND STANDALONE PRO CONTROLLER - The Nitro Deck 2 isn't just a grip. Remove the Switch console and it becomes a standalone pro controller for wireless play. Bluetooth compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PC, mobile, and Smart TVs. One product covers handheld and wireless without buying a separate gamepad.
  • ERGONOMIC DESIGN BUILT FOR EXTENDED HANDHELD PLAY - Sculpted contours, optimized thumbstick placement, and smooth digital triggers reduce hand fatigue over long sessions. Swappable stick tops and D-pads let you customize the feel to match your grip. Built for serious handheld play on Nintendo Switch 2, Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch.
  • BACK BUTTONS, REMAPPABLE CONTROLS & PRO CUSTOMIZATION FOR NINTENDO SWITCH 2 - Four remappable back buttons, two extra shoulder buttons, adjustable stick deadzones, vibration tuning, and turbo mode. All configurable through the CRKD Companion App. Connect wired with the included low-latency USB-C adapter or go wireless via Bluetooth. Your controller, your settings.

Reasons to buy

  • Adjustable-resistance CaptiStick thumbsticks can be set looser for fast movement or tighter for precision.
  • Face buttons are clicky, the circular D-pad has clear travel, and shoulder controls are easy to reach.
  • Four remappable rear buttons, L2/R2 shoulder-zone buttons, adjustable vibration, turbo and app-based remapping/dead-zone controls add flexibility.
  • The centerpiece converts the deck into a separate controller for docked play.

Reasons to skip it

  • The 363g controller makes the console-loaded setup tiring for some users.
  • Inward-angled grips can feel less natural than conventional gamepad contours.
  • Low-travel rear buttons are easy to press accidentally.
  • The console must be removed from the deck for normal docking, and the deck cannot charge the Switch 2.

How heavy is Nitro Deck 2 in handheld mode?

TechRadar measured the controller at 363g before adding the Switch 2. That makes the combined handheld substantially heavier than the console alone, and its inward-angled grips concentrate the issue during longer upright sessions. The shape may feel secure, but it does not disappear in your hands the way a lightweight grip does.

The weight is partly the point: the deck feels rigid and substantial, and its controls are not flimsy. If you mostly play at a desk, on a stand or in shorter sessions, that extra mass may be manageable. For commuting, bed-time play or one-handed repositioning, it is the defining disadvantage.

How good are the sticks and buttons?

CRKD’s CaptiStick system uses capacitor-based, zero-contact sensing and adjustable resistance. TechRadar described the sticks as precise and responsive. Lower resistance favors quick camera or character movement; higher resistance gives more deliberate control for aiming.

The four rear buttons can be assigned through the companion app, alongside dead-zone and other control settings. Their low travel makes rapid inputs possible, but Pocket Tactics and TechRadar both noted that their sensitivity can lead to accidental presses. Motion controls worked accurately in Zelda testing, although moving the whole console is less practical than moving a standard controller.

How does connectivity and battery life work?

Nitro Deck 2 connects wirelessly over Bluetooth or by USB-C. TechRadar reported 15–20 hours of battery life, matching CRKD’s stated range in that testing. The deck charges separately; it has no USB-C passthrough for charging the console, and its battery powers the controller’s wireless functions rather than the Switch 2.

  • COMFORTABLE & ERGONOMIC DESIGN - Now with "Pro style" symmetrical thumbstick layout for enhanced comfort. If you are more fmailiar with asymmetrical thumb grips - then check out the OG Nitro Deck as an alternative option.

  • TV DOCKABLE - Now with HDMI output via the USBC connection, simply connect the USBC to HDMI converter included to your Nitro Deck+ to connect to your TV.
  • MOTION CONTROLS AND WIRED MODE - Use the Nitro Deck as a wired controller for PC or Nintendo Switch. Use it as your main controller or a second controller for multiplayer games and utilize the motion control gyro compatibility and rumble support on Switch.

Bluetooth pairing is straightforward, but wake-from-sleep reconnection can be slow and changing between devices requires pairing again. Wired mode should reconnect faster, though Pocket Tactics found that mode unreliable in some situations. These limitations matter if you regularly move between a console, phone and PC.

Can you dock the Switch 2 with Nitro Deck 2 attached?

No. The assembled deck is too large for a normal dock. To play docked, remove the Switch 2 and use Nitro Deck 2’s centerpiece as a separate controller. This arrangement works, but it adds a step that a dock-compatible grip avoids.

What comes in the box, and how much does it cost?

CRKD lists Smoke Black, Pal Grey, LRG Fusion Limited Edition and White editions at $99.99. TechRadar recorded $89.99, £89.99 and AU$161 through a retailer, so the price is time-sensitive and varies by region. CRKD’s FAQ says Amazon availability is planned for a later date.

How does it compare with other Switch 2 grips?

Compare alternatives on five practical measures: loaded weight and grip angle, official Switch 2 support, whether the console remains dockable, Bluetooth and wired reliability, and the total cost of customization.

TechRadar lists Genki Attack Vector as a lower-cost grip-and-backplate option that retains the Joy-Con 2 pads and can stay attached when docked. GameSir G8+ is also discussed as a possible Switch 2 option, but its compatibility is based on user reports rather than official marketing, so verify support before buying. Nitro Deck 2’s advantage is its integrated controls and adjustable stick resistance; its disadvantages are weight, separate charging and the need to remove it before docking.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the current regional price and stock, since listed prices and retailer availability differ.
  2. Measure your priority: maximum comfort and tuning, or minimum handheld weight.
  3. Decide whether removing the deck before docking is acceptable.
  4. Check how often you switch between Bluetooth devices and whether manual reconnection will bother you.
  5. Budget for the case or replacement control parts only if you actually need them; they raise the total cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nitro Deck 2 work with the original Nintendo Switch?

Yes. CRKD describes it as backward compatible with the original Switch and Switch OLED, in addition to Switch 2. The same product also supports PC, mobile and select smart TVs through Bluetooth or USB-C.

Does the Nitro Deck 2 battery charge the Switch 2?

No. The deck’s battery runs its own wireless functions and the controller must be charged separately. There is no USB-C passthrough to replenish the console while it is mounted.

Can I use Nitro Deck 2 while the Switch 2 is in its dock?

You can use its removable centerpiece as a separate controller, but the complete deck cannot remain attached in a normal dock. The console has to be removed first.

Are the rear buttons easy to remap?

The companion app provides remapping and dead-zone controls, and four rear buttons can be assigned. Their short travel is responsive, but users cited by TechRadar and Pocket Tactics found them sensitive enough to press accidentally.

The Bottom Line

Nitro Deck 2 delivers excellent control customization and a secure, premium-feeling handheld setup, but its 363g weight, separate charging and dock-removal requirement make it a specialist upgrade rather than an automatic purchase. Choose it for adjustable sticks and tactile inputs; skip it if lightness and seamless docking matter most.
