Plan on about 70 hours to finish Crimson Desert’s campaign before the story portion of Charting the Unknown becomes available. HowLongToBeat’s October 2026 player data puts the main objectives at 69.5 hours (70 hours median), with a rushed floor near 50 hours. GameSpot gives a broader 60–100-hour range because the game often makes you stop for upgrades, puzzles and difficult bosses.
You do not need to see the credits to use every new system. Ships, ocean exploration, upgraded housing and businesses begin opening after Chapter 3, Howling Hill, when you establish Greymane Camp. The DLC’s character stories, Garden of Trials and claimable castles are the post-campaign portion.

How long does it take to beat Crimson Desert before the DLC?
The practical answer is two different clocks. Reaching the campaign gate for the DLC’s story content takes roughly 60–80 hours for a focused player, with about 70 hours the most useful late-2026 planning figure. Reaching the first DLC systems at Howling Hill happens much earlier, in Chapter 3, but no reliable independent source has published an hour count for that point.
HowLongToBeat’s live page, accessed October 29, 2026, reports 69.5 hours for the main objectives from 47 player polls. Its underlying figures are 68 hours 34 minutes average, a 70-hour median, 50 hours 23 minutes for rushed runs and 90 hours 8 minutes for leisure play. Those are player submissions, not an official Pearl Abyss target, and the averages will continue to move as more people finish.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
GameSpot’s Jason Rodriguez gives a wider estimate of roughly 60–100 hours for people concentrating on the main story. GAMES.GG puts a focused run at 60–80 hours, while noting that some players still land around 75–95 hours because later bosses demand preparation. The difference from early 35–50-hour database estimates is that the game is now being measured by people who have actually reached its later chapters.
Pearl Abyss said in a 2024 investor-relations statement that the single-player game would offer “around 50 to 80 hours of gameplay” and a definitive ending. That was a pre-release planning range, not a promise that every player would reach the ending in 50 hours. In late 2026, treat 50 hours as an aggressive floor and 70 hours as the realistic target for the campaign gate.
Current playtime ranges by goal
| Goal | Current hours to plan for | Evidence and qualification | DLC implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rushed/main objectives | About 50 hours at the fastest end; 60–80 hours is typical; up to 100 hours is possible | HowLongToBeat reports 50h 23m rushed and a 70-hour median; GameSpot reports 60–100 hours; GAMES.GG reports 60–80 | Use this range for Gate A, the post-campaign story unlock |
| Story plus useful side content | About 100–180 hours; HowLongToBeat headline 138 hours | HowLongToBeat records a 141h 55m average and 135h median from 107 polls; GameSpot gives 100–180 hours for a standard playthrough | Most players finish the campaign before doing everything in this range |
| Completionist | About 250–256 hours as the stronger measured baseline; some estimates reach 400 hours for absolute 100% | HowLongToBeat lists 256 hours (262h 24m average, 251h median, 27 polls); PC Gamer cites about 250 hours; GAMES.GG cites roughly 400 hours as a broader estimate | Not required for any DLC gate |
| Howling Hill and Greymane Camp | No published independent hour count | The unlock is tied to Chapter 3 and camp setup, not a measured number of hours | Opens ocean, ships and several management systems before the credits |
| Charting the Unknown itself | Not established | HowLongToBeat had zero playtime polls for the expansion on October 29, 2026 | Do not budget a made-up DLC length |
HowLongToBeat’s blended all-playstyle listing is 130 hours (140h 51m average and 120h median across 181 polls). That number mixes different goals, so it is a poor answer to “how long before I can start the DLC?” Use the main-story figure for the story gate and Chapter 3 for the systems gate.
Does Charting the Unknown require the main story to be finished?
Only some of it. The expansion is designed primarily as post-game content, but Pearl Abyss also exposes a substantial set of ocean and progression systems during the campaign.
Gate A: finish the campaign
Complete the final Chapter 12 missions, The Final Battle and The Void, then finish the epilogue mission Journey’s End. After the credits, the Journal becomes the starting point for the new character stories involving Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. The same completed campaign is required for the Garden of Trials boss gauntlet in the Abyss and for the three claimable Greymane Castles, alongside their relevant liberation quests.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Pearl Abyss’s feature description says the three character stories can be started “after completing the main story” through the Journal menu. GAMES.GG likewise describes most of the new content as requiring either the completed campaign or a Greymane Camp established at Howling Hill.
Gate B: reach Chapter 3, Howling Hill
Establishing Greymane Camp at Howling Hill is the earlier unlock. It opens the ocean-focused storyline, ship construction and sailing in the Great Ocean of Pywel. You still have to follow the associated ship questline; vessels can be bought through a Fleet Office manager or obtained by dispatching comrades.
Upgraded housing also needs the camp and Luke’s Request in the Grounds of the Sunrise. Businesses require liberation of the relevant region as well as camp setup. These are meaningful DLC features, but they do not mean the post-credit character episodes or Garden of Trials are available.
Gate C: no story lock
Diving and underwater exploration have no story prerequisite once the expansion is installed. Your breath meter still depletes, and diving suits—including the pre-order Charter’s Diving Set and Charter’s Light Diving Set—extend time underwater. Twitch Drops offered from October 29 through November 11, 2026, also grant equipment, a pet and ship cosmetics without requiring story progress.
How many chapters before I can explore freely?
Howling Hill is Chapter 3, after you complete its camp-related objectives. It is the point at which the game starts handing over the ocean and base-management layer, not a promise of a particular number of hours.

The campaign has 14 narrative segments when the prologue and epilogue are counted. GameSpot and Pyweldb both list 168 main-story quests. The spoiler-light order is:
- Prologue: Dead of Night — Ambush; Unknown Space
- Chapter 1: The First Encounter — Trials of Kindness; Traces
- Chapter 2: The Golden Greed — Unexpected Gift; Hernand in Chaos; The End of Greed
- Chapter 3: Howling Hill — Homestead; The Face Behind the Mask; Pioneering
- Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge
- Chapter 5: Guest Unbidden
- Chapter 6: Cracks in the Shield
- Chapter 7: Homecoming
- Chapter 8: Blood Coronation
- Chapter 9: The Sage of the Desert
- Chapter 10: Counterattack
- Chapter 11: Truth and Reality
- Chapter 12: The Abyss — The Final Battle; The Void
- Epilogue: Journey’s End
Pyweldb still shows early 35–50-hour estimates and three-to-five-hour chapter bands. Those figures are inconsistent with the current 70-hour player median, so use that site for the chapter count and the name Howling Hill, not for a time-to-Chapter-3 prediction.
Why is the main story still around 70 hours?
Crimson Desert does not let you treat its main quest as a straight corridor. GameSpot’s launch guide identifies several systems that add unavoidable stops even when optional content is limited.
- Abyss Artifacts replace a conventional XP curve. You spend them on skills and attributes, earning them from enemies, quests, puzzles and challenge tallies. Main-path rewards alone may not provide enough power for later bosses, and some campaign tasks fail if an attribute is too low.
- Travel is deliberately inefficient early on. Fast-travel points are placed in wilderness rather than only in towns. Abyss Cressets and Ancient Ruins require puzzles, some main-path chapters have no fast travel at all, and the Howling Hill teleporter has extra requirements.
- Boss preparation is part of progression. GAMES.GG reports that difficult encounters push players toward Abyss Artifact and Abyss Gear grinding. A player who appears to be rushing the story may still need to detour for a build, equipment or a puzzle solution.
- Guides cannot remove every delay. GameSpot notes that cryptic interface elements and bugs added time even for a guides writer. That helps explain why a nominal 50-hour floor is not a normal expectation.
Platform polls show a modest spread rather than a different game: HowLongToBeat lists a 70h 41m PC main-story average from 127 polls, 61h 12m on PS5 from 44 polls and 69h 8m on Xbox Series X|S from 10 polls. Treat those as platform-specific player averages, not guarantees; the sample sizes and play styles differ.

No. You do not need all 76 bosses, every side quest, every collectible or a completionist save. The 250-plus-hour completionist figures describe optional exploration after the campaign, while Gate A asks only for the main story and the named ending missions.

HowLongToBeat’s 256-hour completionist headline is based on 27 polls, with a 251-hour median. PC Gamer gives a roughly 250-hour baseline. GAMES.GG cites a much larger estimate of about 400 hours for a full 100% route, drawing on a TheGamer writer’s account of unfinished starting-area work. The spread reflects what each writer counts as “complete,” not an additional DLC requirement.
Completion-rate data also explains why the expansion has two gates. CQ-esports reported August 2026 main-story completion at 9.7% on Steam, 13% on Xbox and 15.2% on PS5; that article did not identify the original dashboard publisher. Most owners therefore reach the expansion with an unfinished save, making Howling Hill the practical on-ramp while the character stories remain reserved for post-game.
What should I do before starting the expansion?
Choose the checklist that matches your save rather than replaying the entire game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you have not reached Howling Hill
- Continue the main quest through Chapter 3.
- Complete the Greymane Camp setup at Howling Hill.
- Follow the ship questline if sailing is your immediate goal.
If your camp is established but the campaign is unfinished
- Complete Luke’s Request in the Grounds of the Sunrise for upgraded housing.
- Liberate regions tied to the businesses you want, then finish the required camp work.
- Keep progressing the campaign if you want the Kliff, Oongka and Damiane stories, the Garden of Trials and castles available on day one.
If you have completed Journey’s End
- Install the latest Crimson Desert Enhanced build.
- Open the Journal to start the new character stories.
- Visit the Abyss for the Garden of Trials and begin the liberation work for the three Greymane Castles.
- Keep silver available for Fleet Office ships and materials needed for housing.
What does Charting the Unknown add?
The expansion adds more than a short epilogue. Its feature set includes three character episodes, an ocean storyline, underwater ruins, chests and creatures, plus sea mounts such as turtles, orcas, stingrays and tameable sunfish. You can build ships, fight at sea and liberate islands off the Delesyia coast.
Camp progression adds build-from-scratch housing, romance and marriage interactions, and visits after the Expanding the Camp quests. Witches of Pywel are among the confirmed romance options. Rentable businesses include a restaurant in Vellua and a smithy at Zargan Tankworks. The Garden of Trials is a sequential boss challenge with exclusive rewards, while the three unnamed castles function as claimable strongholds.

Those features explain the split recommendation: reach Chapter 3 to sample the new systems as soon as possible, but finish the campaign if your reason for buying the expansion is its narrative and endgame content.
When did the DLC launch, and where is it available?
Charting the Unknown launched Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 22:00 UTC (3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET), after a two-week delay from October 15. The digital expansion is priced at $24.99 / £19.99. It is listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store; it was not on the Mac App Store at launch. Some markets had pre-orders withdrawn and refunded after content and age-rating review.

So, how long will it really take?
For a new player who wants every story episode, reserve about 70 hours before the Journal-based DLC stories unlock, with a realistic personal range of 60–100 hours. If your priority is sailing, diving, housing or businesses, push to Chapter 3 and establish Greymane Camp instead; the game does not publish a defensible hour figure for that milestone. A 100% file is optional and can run into the hundreds of hours, while the expansion’s own playtime remains unmeasured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start the ocean content on an existing mid-campaign save?
Yes. Once that save has reached Chapter 3 and Greymane Camp is established at Howling Hill, the ocean storyline and ship progression can be pursued without completing the remaining chapters. The post-credit character episodes still wait for the campaign ending.
Is Charting the Unknown included with Crimson Desert Enhanced?
No. Enhanced is the free 2.00.00 update that brings the base game and prior patches forward; Charting the Unknown is a separate $24.99 / £19.99 digital purchase. Its launch storefronts are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store.
Does the expansion have a confirmed number of hours?
Not yet. HowLongToBeat showed zero player playtime submissions for the expansion on October 29, 2026, so any precise DLC-length claim would be speculative. The available figures describe the base campaign and optional completion, not Charting the Unknown.
Can Mac players access the DLC at launch?
The expansion was not on the Mac App Store at launch. The announced launch platforms were PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store, and availability can vary by region after ratings review.
