Yes—within practical limits, the Creality Sermoon P1 can cover an unusually wide range of objects. Its blue-laser modes target small, detailed parts, while near-infrared (NIR) structured light handles medium and large subjects. Creality specifies scan volumes from 5 × 5 × 5 mm to 4,000 × 4,000 × 4,000 mm, and says black and metal surfaces can be captured without scanning spray. That does not make every scan effortless: reflective surfaces can disrupt tracking, and independent testing found duplicated mesh areas on shiny objects and weak color textures. The P1 is best understood as a portable professional geometry scanner with a broad size range, not a one-click photorealistic texture system.
What is the Creality Sermoon P1, and can it really scan almost any object?
The Sermoon P1 is a hybrid 3D scanner that combines blue laser lines with near-infrared structured light. A single device can therefore move from tiny mechanical details to large assemblies without changing scanners. It also captures, processes and exports scans on the device, so a computer is optional for many jobs.

It is not a guarantee that every material, finish or texture will track perfectly. Reflective surfaces, weak visual texture, difficult lighting and poor alignment can still require markers, a second pass or mesh cleanup.
How do the P1’s blue laser and NIR systems differ?
Choose the capture system according to the object’s scale and the detail you need. Blue laser favors precision; NIR covers larger areas faster.

Blue-laser modes for detail
The scanner offers single-line, seven-line and 22-line blue-laser modes. These modes are intended for small parts, edges, holes and other fine geometry. Creality rates blue-laser accuracy at up to 0.02 mm, with volumetric accuracy of 0.02 mm + 0.06 mm/m under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.
Laser scanning uses marker or global-marker alignment. Markers give the software identifiable reference points when the object itself does not provide enough trackable geometry.

NIR structured light for larger objects
Close-range and long-range NIR structured-light modes are designed for medium and large objects. NIR accuracy is specified at up to 0.075 mm, with volumetric accuracy of 0.075 mm + 0.1 mm/m. NIR also supports geometry and texture alignment, which can be useful when a larger subject has enough natural shape or surface detail to track.
| Capability | Blue laser | NIR structured light |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Small parts and fine geometry | Medium-to-large objects and assemblies |
| Published accuracy | Up to 0.02 mm | Up to 0.075 mm |
| Volumetric accuracy | 0.02 mm + 0.06 mm/m | 0.075 mm + 0.1 mm/m |
| Alignment | Marker or global-marker alignment | Geometry and texture alignment |
| Line or range options | Single, seven-line and 22-line | Close-range and long-range |
These are Creality’s published specifications, not a universal tolerance for every object or scanning setup. Surface preparation, distance, movement and alignment can produce results that differ from the headline figures.
What size objects can the Sermoon P1 scan?
Creality lists a scan-volume range from 5 × 5 × 5 mm to 4,000 × 4,000 × 4,000 mm. In practical terms, that spans small components, household objects, vehicle-sized subjects and many large assemblies. The smallest end is realistic only when the scanner is used in an appropriate laser mode and the object provides enough trackable detail.

At the largest end, NIR is the sensible starting point because it covers more area per pass. Large scans still demand a deliberate path around the subject, stable tracking and enough overlap between passes. A nominal four-metre cube does not mean a four-metre object can be scanned from one position.
Can it scan black, shiny or metal objects without spray?
Creality says the P1 can scan black and metal surfaces without scanning spray. That claim is useful, but it should not be read as “all reflective objects scan perfectly.” Reflectivity can confuse optical tracking even when the scanner obtains usable geometry.
Creative Bloq’s testing recognized a shiny gourd, yet some passes produced duplicated mesh sections. The usual response is to slow down, change the viewing angle, improve overlap, add markers where appropriate and rescan the troublesome region. If a surface remains unstable, a removable matte treatment may still be the fastest way to obtain a clean result, subject to the object’s material and conservation requirements.
Texture-poor black surfaces can also give alignment software fewer visual cues. NIR geometry alignment or marker-assisted laser alignment may be more reliable than relying on color alone. Avoid direct glare and keep the scanner’s distance consistent while moving around the subject.
Do you need a computer to use the Sermoon P1?
No. The P1 is designed for standalone operation and can process a scan on its own. It has a six-inch display, a Qualcomm eight-core 3.36 GHz processor, an Adreno 740 GPU, 24 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Creality lists standalone capture at up to 60 frames per second.

For larger jobs or a desktop editing workflow, the scanner can connect wirelessly or through USB-C. Creality lists up to 80 fps over a wireless connection and up to 100 fps over a wired connection. Wireless operation uses Wi-Fi 7, while wired operation avoids radio congestion and is the safer choice when maximum transfer consistency matters.
Creality’s recommended computer specifications
| Platform | Operating system | Processor and memory | Graphics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11 | Intel Core i7 13th Gen or newer; at least 64 GB RAM | NVIDIA RTX 4060 or better, with 8 GB VRAM |
| Mac | macOS 14 or newer | Apple M3, M4 or M5; at least 32 GB RAM | Integrated Apple graphics |
These are Creality’s recommended specifications for its scanning software, not a requirement to operate the handheld scanner in standalone mode. A computer below the recommendation may work for lighter tasks, but performance and processing headroom are not assured.
How do you set up and scan with the P1?
The basic workflow is portable, but accurate results still depend on calibration, mode selection and controlled movement.
- Charge and prepare. Install a charged 3,300 mAh battery, connect the scanner if you want a wired workflow, and inspect the lenses and calibration board.
- Calibrate when prompted. Use the supplied glass calibration board and follow the on-screen procedure. Calibration is especially important before precision work or after transporting the unit.
- Choose the optical mode. Select a blue-laser mode for small, detailed geometry. Select close- or long-range NIR for a medium or large subject.
- Choose alignment. Apply reflective marker dots and use marker or global-marker alignment when the object lacks stable features. For NIR, choose geometry or texture alignment according to the subject.
- Plan a continuous path. Keep a steady distance and speed, overlap adjacent passes and avoid abrupt changes in angle. Watch the live tracking indicator rather than assuming every frame is registered.
- Inspect before ending the session. Rotate the model, check holes, edges and thin sections, and rescan any area showing drift, gaps or duplicated surfaces.
- Process and export. The P1 can process the mesh onboard. For heavier cleanup, transfer the project wirelessly or by USB-C to a computer that meets Creality’s recommended configuration.
What are the P1’s real-world limitations?
Color textures are the weak point
Tom’s Hardware found the geometry capture strong but described the color textures as disappointing. If your deliverable is a dimensionally useful mesh for reverse engineering, inspection or fabrication, that limitation may be acceptable. If you need attractive, presentation-ready color immediately from the scan, plan on additional texture work or a separate imaging workflow.

Tracking can fail before geometry does
A scan may look convincing in one area and still contain duplicated or misregistered sections elsewhere. Shiny objects are a known risk from independent testing, but texture-poor, repetitive or poorly lit surfaces can also reduce tracking confidence. The P1’s broad capability therefore rewards a disciplined scan path rather than a fast sweep.

Large scans require planning
The four-metre published maximum describes the supported volume, not the time or labor required to capture a large object. Large subjects create more data, require more overlap and make small alignment errors more visible. Break the job into logical regions and verify registration before moving on.
How portable is the Sermoon P1?
Creality lists the scanner at 830 g. It includes two replaceable 3,300 mAh batteries, allowing a charged spare to be carried for field work, although the available data does not establish a guaranteed runtime. The box also includes a hard carrying case, power supply, USB-C cable, glass calibration board and reflective marker dots, according to Tom’s Hardware and the manual.
The combination of onboard processing, display, storage and batteries is valuable for inspections, archives, workshops and locations where carrying a high-powered computer is inconvenient. A desktop remains preferable for extensive cleanup and larger project management.

Its value depends on whether one scanner must cover both fine parts and large objects, and whether standalone operation saves meaningful setup time. Tom’s Hardware reported a $3,129 direct price from Creality, a $2,799 Amazon listing and a $3,299 price in a specification table on 13 March 2026. These figures are time-sensitive and can change with region, bundles, stock and promotions.
For professional reverse engineering, product design, engineering inspection, prop and game-asset production, archiving and field capture, the geometry capability and portability can justify the premium over entry-level scanners. Hobbyists on a tight budget, or buyers primarily seeking polished color models, should treat the price and texture weakness as decisive disadvantages.

Who should buy the P1, and who should choose something else?
The P1 is a strong fit when you need:
- One scanner for small components and large assemblies.
- High-detail blue-laser capture with a published 0.02 mm accuracy figure.
- Standalone scanning and onboard mesh processing.
- Portable work using a case, replaceable batteries and wireless or USB-C transfer.
- A workflow that can use markers, geometry alignment or texture alignment as conditions change.
Look elsewhere when you need:
- Consistently attractive color textures straight from the scan.
- A low-cost casual device for occasional hobby projects.
- A completely automatic process with no alignment checks or cleanup.
- A guaranteed result on highly reflective, repetitive or textureless surfaces without experimentation.
What should you compare with another 3D scanner?
Do not compare headline accuracy alone. Evaluate the minimum and maximum supported object size, single-point and volumetric accuracy, laser versus infrared capability, performance on black, metallic and glossy surfaces, standalone use, scan speed, point rate, texture quality, alignment methods, onboard editing, battery system, included calibration accessories, software requirements and total street price.
A scanner with a lower quoted accuracy may still be the better tool if it handles your material reliably, produces better textures or fits your computer and field workflow. Conversely, a device with impressive laboratory figures may be impractical if it cannot cover the object sizes you actually encounter.
What is the bottom-line verdict on “almost any object”?
The Creality Sermoon P1 earns the phrase because its hybrid optics and 5 mm-to-4 m published range cover far more object types than a single-purpose scanner. Its strongest case is professional geometry capture that must move between small detailed parts and large subjects, especially when computer-free operation matters. Treat black and metal scanning claims as an advantage, not a guarantee; expect extra alignment work on shiny surfaces and do not buy it primarily for finished color textures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Sermoon P1 be used entirely on location?
Yes. The scanner has its own display, processor, RAM, storage and batteries, and it can capture and process scans without a tethered computer. The hard case and spare battery documented with the package make transport practical, while exact battery runtime depends on mode and workload and is not specified here.
What export formats does the Sermoon P1 support?
The device can export processed scans, but the available file-format list changes with Creality’s software and firmware releases. Check the current Creality Scan documentation before a purchase if your CAD, inspection or game-engine pipeline requires a particular format.
How can I reduce duplicate mesh areas on a glossy object?
Use a slower, more consistent path with generous overlap, change the viewing angle to reduce glare and add markers where the selected alignment method supports them. Inspect the model during capture and rescan unstable regions instead of trying to repair every registration error later.
Is the P1 suitable for making color-accurate product images?
It can record color information, but an independent Tom’s Hardware evaluation found the resulting textures disappointing. For marketing-quality imagery, plan a separate photography or texture-processing step rather than relying on the raw scan alone.
