Choose the Creality Raptor Pro for the sharpest small-part detail and a hybrid blue-laser/NIR workflow. Choose the Revopoint MetroY Pro if you scan larger, smooth surfaces, want full-field structured light, or value desktop and turntable automation. Independent testing found the Raptor Pro sharper on small objects, while the MetroY Pro captured smoother, more detailed large bodywork. Their published accuracy figures are close enough that object size, surface geometry, tracking and scan technique matter more than a single headline number.

This comparison explains what each scanner can realistically do, how the specifications differ, which is better for reverse engineering, and how to handle black, shiny or transparent parts.

What is the difference between the Creality Raptor Pro and Revopoint MetroY Pro?

The Raptor Pro is a hybrid scanner built around blue lasers with a near-infrared (NIR) mode, while the MetroY Pro combines multi-line laser scanning with 62-line full-field structured light. Both target small-to-medium workpieces, but they emphasize different workflows.

Category Creality Raptor Pro Revopoint MetroY Pro
Scanning technologies Blue parallel and cross-line lasers plus NIR Multi-line laser plus 62-line full-field structured light
Published single-frame or mode accuracy Up to 0.02 mm in blue mode; 0.075 mm maximum NIR accuracy 0.02 mm single-frame accuracy; 0.01 mm single-frame precision
Published volumetric accuracy 0.02 + 0.08 mm/m 0.02 mm + 0.04 mm × L
Maximum stated rate 3,580,000 measurements/s in NIR mode 7,000,000 points/s in structured-light mode
Smallest-to-largest stated scan volume Mode- and distance-dependent; blue cross-line area reaches 397 × 290 mm at 500 mm, NIR reaches 630 × 550 mm at 1,000 mm 10 × 10 × 10 mm minimum to 1 × 1 × 1 m maximum
Automation and accessories Handheld workflow with blue laser and NIR modes Handheld and desktop workflows; dual-axis turntable listed as a supported accessory
Weight and connectivity Not stated in the supplied product specifications 450 g body, 2 MP RGB camera, Wi-Fi 6 and USB-C

Those figures are not directly interchangeable. Creality reports “measurements,” while Revopoint reports “points”; the scanners also use different modes and test conditions. Treat the rates as manufacturer claims, not as a universal speed ranking.

Which scanner is more accurate?

On paper, the MetroY Pro has the lower distance-dependent volumetric term, but the Raptor Pro has a 0.02 mm blue-mode accuracy claim and performed similarly in an independent ball-bar comparison. In practical work, the scanner that maintains tracking and sees your surface cleanly will usually produce the more accurate part.

Understanding the volumetric figures

Creality specifies volumetric accuracy as 0.02 + 0.08 mm/m. Revopoint specifies 0.02 mm + 0.04 mm × L, where L is the measured length in metres. Because the formulas are written differently in the product material, do not subtract one number from the other as if they were measured under one common protocol.

Revopoint notes that its precision and accuracy values were acquired in a controlled laboratory environment and that actual results can vary with the operating environment. Lighting, working distance, calibration, tracking features, vibration, scan alignment and post-processing can all change the result you obtain.

What independent testing found

CNC Kitchen tested both scanners on parts including an N64 controller and a Vespa. The Raptor Pro was sharper on small parts. On the large Vespa bodywork, the MetroY Pro produced smoother surfaces and more overall detail. The tester wrote: “On the large, smooth Vespa bodywork the Metro Y Pro won: smoother surfaces, more detail overall, and even the reflective logo came out better.”

In the same author’s ball-bar tests, most Raptor Pro measurements were around ±0.02 mm from the reference, while MetroY Pro results were around ±0.03 mm. Those results reflect that specific setup, not a guarantee for every object or operator, but they show why the published specifications alone do not decide the winner.

Which scanner is better for small, detailed parts?

The Raptor Pro is the stronger choice when fine edges, lettering, ribs, holes and other small features are your priority. Its blue laser modes are designed to resolve concentrated detail, and the independent controller and small-part testing gave it the sharper result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why blue lasers help on small geometry

The Raptor Pro uses seven blue parallel laser lines and 22 blue cross lines. Creality lists up to 0.02 mm accuracy in blue mode, with rates of 420,000 and 660,000 measurements per second in its blue modes. You can select the line pattern that best fits the part and the working distance rather than relying on one fixed capture area.

For a compact component, sharper data is useful only if the scanner can keep tracking. Apply markers when the part lacks distinctive geometry, use a stable turntable or fixture, and avoid moving the object while changing viewpoints. A high specification cannot correct motion between frames.

When the MetroY Pro can still be the better small-part tool

The MetroY Pro states a 10 × 10 × 10 mm minimum scan volume and offers a laser mode as well as structured light. If you need a repeatable desktop setup, its supported dual-axis turntable can rotate the part while you capture it. That automation can outweigh a small difference in edge sharpness for batches of similarly sized components.

Which scanner handles large, smooth surfaces better?

The MetroY Pro has the independent-test advantage on broad, smooth surfaces such as vehicle body panels. Its full-field structured-light mode can collect a dense view across a larger area, reducing the need to build a smooth panel from many narrow strips.

MetroY Pro structured light

Revopoint specifies 62-line full-field structured light and up to 7,000,000 structured-light points per second. The stated maximum scan volume is 1 × 1 × 1 m. Those figures suit panels and other continuous surfaces where even coverage and smooth alignment are more important than probing a tiny recess.

Raptor Pro NIR capture areas

The Raptor Pro’s NIR mode reaches 3,580,000 measurements per second. Creality lists a NIR capture area of 630 × 550 mm at 1,000 mm, substantially wider than its blue cross-line area of 397 × 290 mm at 500 mm. NIR is therefore useful when you need broad-area coverage, although Creality’s stated maximum NIR accuracy is 0.075 mm rather than the 0.02 mm blue-mode figure.

How to choose for a panel or enclosure

  • Choose MetroY Pro when the surface is broad, smooth and relatively easy to illuminate uniformly.
  • Choose Raptor Pro when the panel also contains small, sharp features that benefit from blue-laser detail, or when NIR’s larger capture area fits your workflow.
  • Plan registration before scanning: use markers or reliable geometric features so a long panel does not slowly drift as views are aligned.

What do the scan-speed numbers actually mean?

MetroY Pro’s 7,000,000 points/s headline is its structured-light claim, while its laser mode is specified at 2,000,000 points/s. Raptor Pro lists 420,000 and 660,000 measurements/s in blue modes and 3,580,000 measurements/s in NIR. Since “points” and “measurements” are different terms and each figure belongs to a particular mode, there is no fair single-number speed winner.

Capture speed also depends on how many views are required, whether tracking is lost, the overlap between frames, exposure settings, computer performance and the time spent cleaning the mesh. A slower mode that needs fewer rescans can finish a part sooner than a faster mode that produces gaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do handheld, desktop and turntable workflows compare?

The MetroY Pro is the more flexible desktop scanner: Revopoint positions it for both handheld and desktop operation, and lists a dual-axis turntable as a supported accessory. The Raptor Pro is primarily a handheld hybrid tool, with users switching between blue laser patterns and NIR for different surfaces and scales.

Handheld workflow

  1. Calibrate the scanner according to the manufacturer’s procedure and let the device and object reach a stable room temperature.
  2. Choose a mode based on geometry: blue laser for fine detail, NIR for wider-area capture, or MetroY laser/structured light according to surface and scale.
  3. Secure the object and add markers if natural features are insufficient for tracking.
  4. Start at a moderate distance, maintain consistent overlap, and move around the object rather than making abrupt jumps.
  5. Pause and inspect alignment before covering another side. If the preview begins to drift, return to a feature-rich region or add markers instead of continuing.
  6. Finish the scan, remove isolated noise, fill only justified holes, and export a mesh for inspection in your CAD or metrology workflow.

Desktop and turntable workflow

  1. Place the part centrally on the turntable and ensure the scanner has an unobstructed view.
  2. Select the appropriate turntable rotation and scan mode in the software.
  3. Capture one rotation, inspect registration, then repeat from a second elevation if the underside or top is hidden.
  4. Align the rotations, merge the point clouds, and verify that small features were not softened by over-aggressive fusion.

For MetroY Pro, Revo Metro handles capture, post-processing and multi-model alignment on Windows and macOS. Confirm current operating-system and hardware requirements before purchasing because software support can change independently of the scanner body.

Can either scanner capture black, shiny or transparent parts?

Neither scanner makes every difficult surface effortless. MetroY Pro marketing says many shiny or dark surfaces can be scanned without spray, but transparent and strongly specular objects may still need preparation. The Raptor Pro’s choice of blue laser and NIR modes gives you alternatives, yet reflective, translucent or featureless surfaces can still defeat tracking or produce holes.

Surface-preparation checklist

  • Clean fingerprints, oil and dust from the part before scanning.
  • Reduce direct reflections by changing the scanner angle or room lighting rather than pointing a bright source at the surface.
  • Use removable scanning spray on transparent or highly reflective areas when the scanner cannot obtain stable data.
  • Apply a light, even dusting. CNC Kitchen warns that spray adds a physical layer and recommends avoiding a thick coat.
  • Mask or protect areas where residue could affect fit, tolerances or cosmetic finish.
  • Scan a test patch first and confirm that the coating can be removed safely from the material.

Dark color alone is not the same problem as gloss. A matte black surface may scan acceptably, while a glossy black surface can reflect the pattern away from the camera. Transparent parts can transmit or refract projected light, so software cannot always reconstruct their true boundary without treatment.

Which scanner is better for reverse engineering?

For reverse engineering, choose the Raptor Pro when small machined features and crisp edges dominate; choose the MetroY Pro when you need to capture a larger housing, panel or enclosure efficiently and then align multiple views on a desktop setup.

Choose Raptor Pro for feature-driven parts

  • Small brackets, castings, knobs, housings and components with fine ribs or lettering.
  • Jobs where blue-laser sharpness is more important than a wide single view.
  • Work that benefits from switching to NIR for a larger-area pass and blue laser for detail.

Choose MetroY Pro for surface-driven parts

  • Large smooth shells, vehicle panels and enclosures with broad continuous surfaces.
  • Repeatable scans using a desktop stand and supported dual-axis turntable.
  • Projects that benefit from full-field structured light and a stated 1 m maximum scan volume.

Reverse-engineering cautions

A scan is a geometric reference, not automatically a dimensionally certified CAD model. Establish datums, scale-check critical distances, and inspect holes, mating faces and thin edges separately. Keep the raw point cloud or mesh so you can distinguish a real part feature from a smoothing or hole-filling artifact.

What are the main trade-offs at a glance?

If your priority is… Better starting choice Reason
Sharp detail on small parts Creality Raptor Pro Blue-laser modes and independent testing favor fine detail.
Large smooth bodywork Revopoint MetroY Pro Independent testing found smoother surfaces and more detail on the Vespa panel.
Hybrid laser options Creality Raptor Pro Seven parallel lines, 22 cross lines and NIR in one scanner.
Full-field structured light Revopoint MetroY Pro 62-line projection and a 7,000,000-point/s stated rate.
Desktop automation Revopoint MetroY Pro Handheld and desktop positioning with a supported dual-axis turntable.
Lower published volumetric term Revopoint MetroY Pro 0.04 mm × L versus Raptor Pro’s 0.08 mm/m term, subject to different test conditions.
Wide NIR capture area Creality Raptor Pro 630 × 550 mm at 1,000 mm in the stated NIR specification.

Is the Raptor Pro worth paying more for?

The Raptor Pro is worth the premium when its blue-detail performance and NIR option solve a real production problem: small features that must remain crisp, or parts that benefit from switching between narrow-detail and broad-area capture. If most of your work is smooth panels and you value desktop automation, the MetroY Pro can provide more useful capability even if the Raptor Pro has a higher headline price in your region.

Published prices, bundles and included accessories vary by country and retailer. Check the exact package before comparing totals: a turntable, markers, calibration equipment, software access and surface-preparation supplies can change the effective cost more than the scanner body alone.

How should you decide before ordering?

  1. Measure your typical parts. Note the smallest feature you must preserve and the largest continuous surface you scan.
  2. Classify the geometry. Fine, recessed detail points toward Raptor blue laser; broad, smooth geometry points toward MetroY structured light.
  3. Check surfaces. Identify gloss, black coatings, transparency and polished metal, then budget time for removable spray or masking where necessary.
  4. Choose the workflow. Select MetroY Pro if a desktop turntable and automated repeatability matter; select Raptor Pro if handheld mode switching is more valuable.
  5. Validate your computer and software. For MetroY Pro, confirm that Revo Metro supports your Windows or macOS system and that your computer meets current requirements.
  6. Plan measurement verification. Decide how you will check scale and critical dimensions after scanning instead of treating the mesh as a certified inspection result.

Verdict: which 3D scanner should you buy?

Buy the Creality Raptor Pro for small-part detail, blue-laser sharpness and the flexibility of an NIR wide-area mode. Buy the Revopoint MetroY Pro for large smooth surfaces, full-field structured light, desktop capture and a supported turntable workflow. The MetroY Pro’s lower published volumetric term is attractive, but it is a laboratory specification under a different formula; the independent tests show that shape and use case are more decisive than the number alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need scanning spray for every black part?

No. Matte black parts may scan without coating, while glossy black, transparent and highly reflective areas are more likely to need treatment. Test a small area first and use the thinnest removable layer that gives stable tracking.

Can these scanners produce a ready-to-machine CAD file?

They produce point clouds and meshes that still need cleanup, alignment, datum selection and feature reconstruction in CAD software. Critical mating dimensions should be checked with independent measurement tools before manufacturing.

Is a turntable required to use the MetroY Pro?

No. Revopoint supports handheld scanning as well as desktop operation. A dual-axis turntable is an optional workflow aid for repeatable rotations, not a prerequisite for capturing a part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two scans of the same object have different accuracy?

Accuracy changes with calibration, lighting, working distance, tracking features, vibration, surface reflectivity and alignment decisions. Manufacturer specifications are controlled-condition references, so your setup and technique determine the field result.
