If your Corsair HS80 microphone is not working on Windows, first confirm the exact headset model, lower the boom to unmute it, select the HS80 as Windows’ input device, and make a test recording. Check Windows microphone privacy permissions before reinstalling drivers or buying replacement hardware. The HS80 RGB Wireless, HS80 RGB USB, and HS80 MAX Wireless have different connection paths and controls, so a fix for one model may not apply to another.

Which Corsair HS80 model do you have?

Read the full product name printed on the headset or its packaging before troubleshooting. The connection type and controls differ across the HS80 family: the original HS80 RGB Wireless uses a USB wireless receiver and also has a documented USB mode; the HS80 RGB USB connects by cable; and the HS80 MAX Wireless has both RF and Bluetooth behavior. Corsair’s HS80 RGB Wireless quick-start guide describes its boom as a flip-up-to-mute, flip-down-to-unmute control.

  • HS80 RGB Wireless: Wireless connection through its USB receiver, plus a wired USB mode. Its microphone is non-detachable.
  • HS80 RGB USB: Direct USB connection. Its guide also describes a mute button on the left earcup.
  • HS80 MAX Wireless: Uses a receiver for RF wireless and also supports Bluetooth. Its receiver can be in the wrong radio mode, and it has a documented retained-mute issue involving iCUE.

Before changing anything, identify the symptom: the microphone is missing from Windows, appears but records silence, records at a low level, fails only in one app, stays muted, or works but has no sidetone. These are different faults and call for different checks. Also note how the headset is connected—USB cable, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth where supported—so you can reproduce the problem and avoid applying instructions for another model.

What should I check first when the HS80 mic is silent?

Start with the physical mute and Windows input selection. These quick checks resolve common configuration problems without changing drivers or headset firmware.

  1. Lower the microphone boom. On the HS80 RGB Wireless, raising the boom mutes it and lowering it unmutes it. On the HS80 RGB USB, check the boom and the left-earcup mute button described in its guide. Do not assume every HS80 model has the same controls.
  2. Check iCUE’s microphone state. If the headset is detected in Corsair’s iCUE software, verify the microphone is not muted there.
  3. Select the HS80 microphone as Windows input. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, find Input, and select the HS80 microphone rather than another connected microphone.
  4. Make a Windows test recording. If the test records your voice, Windows is receiving audio and the remaining problem is more likely in the calling or recording app. If the test is silent, continue with permissions and the connection checks below.
  5. Check microphone privacy access. Windows 11: open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Windows 10: open Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Turn on microphone access and the relevant app controls; desktop apps also need their desktop-app access control enabled.

Microsoft’s Windows microphone troubleshooting guide covers the input test and privacy settings. A Store app and a desktop program may have different permission controls, so do not treat an app missing from an individual-app list as proof that Windows has blocked all microphone access. Microsoft notes that desktop apps do not appear in that list; enable the general desktop-app access control and check the app’s own input setting.

Keep the order simple: establish whether the mic is muted, whether Windows has selected the right input, and whether a recording is actually captured. If the device is not listed at all, changing its volume cannot make it appear; move to the connection checks instead.

How do I test whether Windows can hear the microphone?

A Windows recording test separates a Windows-level input fault from a problem confined to Discord or another app. Use the test sample—not just the input-device name—to confirm that the microphone actually records sound.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the HS80 microphone.
  3. Open its properties and choose Start test.
  4. Speak at a normal level, choose Stop test, then play the recorded sample.

Windows 10

Open Settings > System > Sound, select the HS80 under Input, and use the microphone test shown there. If you cannot find the HS80 as an input at all, skip to the connection and detection section rather than adjusting gain.

If the Windows test works but an app does not

Choose the HS80 microphone in that app’s own audio or voice settings. App updates can change audio-device selections, so a previously working app may have switched to another input. For a Discord-only problem, Corsair’s troubleshooting advice includes resetting Discord Voice Settings; first confirm the HS80 works in the Windows test so that an app-level reset is aimed at the right problem.

After selecting the mic in the app, make a short app-level test or join a test call. Avoid changing several Windows and app settings at once: if the mic starts working, changing one setting at a time makes it easier to identify what fixed the issue. If Windows’ sample is silent too, an app reset is unlikely to solve the underlying device, mute, permission, or connection issue.

What if the HS80 MAX microphone is stuck on mute?

The HS80 MAX has a documented case in which boom unmute may fail after iCUE is closed or crashes because a system-wide microphone mute remains set. Corsair describes this as a retained mute state, not necessarily a broken boom switch.

Reopen iCUE and unmute the microphone there. If that does not clear it, open Windows Sound settings and clear the microphone mute from the input device’s controls. Then repeat the Windows input test. Corsair’s HS80 MAX stuck-mute support article documents this model-specific behavior; do not apply it as a general diagnosis for the HS80 RGB USB or original HS80 RGB Wireless.

If the headset is not an HS80 MAX, return to that model’s normal mute controls and check that Windows has selected its microphone. A stuck-mute report is not by itself evidence that the boom or headset needs replacement.

How can I fix an HS80 mic that is too quiet?

If Windows records your voice but the level is low, adjust microphone position and input level before changing drivers. Place the flexible boom toward the left corner of your mouth, then raise Windows Input volume gradually while replaying a test recording.

If iCUE detects a compatible headset, check its device settings for Mic Boost. Corsair’s feature documentation, updated in June 2025, says iCUE version 5.14 or later supports up to 10 dB of Mic Boost. This is a gain adjustment, not a fix for a microphone that Windows cannot detect; listen for increased background noise after raising it. If only Discord is quiet, adjust that app’s input level and confirm it has not selected a different microphone.

Make the change in small increments and record another sample at a normal speaking distance. More gain can make room noise more noticeable, so compare both voice level and background noise rather than turning the control straight to its maximum. Corsair’s “up to 10 dB” figure describes the available boost, not a guaranteed improvement or a repair success rate.

What should I do if the HS80 microphone is missing from Windows?

If the HS80 does not appear as an input device, check the connection path for the exact model before reinstalling software. Use a USB port directly on the computer rather than a hub, and test another port if possible.

HS80 RGB USB

Reseat the USB connection and try another direct USB port. Confirm Windows is not showing a different input device as the default. If the headset remains absent, move on to the driver and second-computer checks below.

HS80 RGB Wireless

Confirm the headset is powered on and its USB wireless receiver is connected directly to the computer. Try another port and check pairing. A rapidly blinking red receiver light indicates that the receiver cannot connect; Corsair’s guidance is to re-pair through iCUE. The original HS80 RGB Wireless also supports a documented USB mode: turn the headset off before connecting it to the PC with a USB cable. Trying this wired mode can help isolate a wireless-path problem, but it is not a guaranteed microphone repair.

The cable test is useful because it changes the connection path: if the headset is recognized in USB mode but not through its receiver, focus on the receiver, wireless pairing, or wireless connection rather than treating the microphone boom as the first suspect. If it is missing in both modes, that still does not prove a particular component is faulty; continue with the PC and driver checks.

HS80 MAX Wireless

Make sure its USB receiver is connected if you need the iCUE functions described in the MAX guide. If the receiver blinks red, the headset may have been switched to Bluetooth mode accidentally; Corsair says a quick press of the headset’s power button switches it back to RF mode. The MAX uses a different radio arrangement from earlier HS80 models, so do not assume that a receiver from another HS80 variant will work.

Bluetooth and the USB receiver are distinct connection paths. If a MAX connection problem appeared after changing modes, check that the headset is back in RF mode for its receiver connection before trying driver cleanup. Do not use an original HS80 RGB Wireless pairing procedure or receiver as a substitute for model-specific MAX instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For broader connection checks, see Corsair’s headset-not-detected support guide.

Should I update firmware or reset the headset?

Try firmware checks after confirming the connection and Windows settings. In iCUE, check for updates for both the wireless headset and its receiver, and leave the components connected while an update runs. For the original HS80 RGB Wireless, Corsair’s guide says the headset must be powered off and connected in USB mode for its firmware update.

If the original HS80 RGB Wireless still has a problem, Corsair documents a soft reset: power the headset off, hold the power button until the lights flash, wait 15 seconds, then power it on if needed and test again. This is a vendor procedure, not a published guarantee that the reset will fix every microphone fault. Do not rely on an old firmware version number as proof that a device is current; check iCUE for the update offered to the connected headset and receiver.

Keep the receiver and headset connected throughout an update and do not interrupt the process. Firmware checks are most useful after Windows can see the hardware and the basic mute and mode checks are complete; they are not a substitute for selecting the correct input or granting microphone access. The documented 15-second wait applies to the original HS80 RGB Wireless soft reset, not necessarily to every HS80 model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I reinstall drivers or contact Corsair?

Use driver removal and reinstallation only if Windows still cannot detect an input after the physical connection, privacy, and input-selection checks. Microsoft’s microphone guidance includes removing the audio driver and restarting Windows. Corsair also provides headset-driver and iCUE reinstall instructions; its detailed device-entry cleanup procedure is specific to the HS80 MAX, so do not apply MAX-specific steps to other models without checking the relevant model instructions.

Testing the headset on another computer can help distinguish a PC-specific Windows or USB issue from a fault in the headset or receiver. If the microphone is still absent or silent on another computer after the applicable connection and mute checks, contact Corsair support or use its official parts and warranty route. Part availability depends on the model and stock; do not buy an assumed universal HS80 receiver or a replacement boom for the HS80 RGB Wireless.

There is no need to start by purchasing a driver utility or an unverified replacement part. The documented troubleshooting routes here use Windows and Corsair tools. If support confirms that hardware is needed, match the full model and connection type before considering a replacement. An HS80 RGB USB, original HS80 RGB Wireless, and HS80 MAX Wireless differ in wired versus wireless operation, receiver behavior, and Bluetooth support; they are alternatives, not interchangeable repair parts. Corsair’s official spare-part request route depends on availability.

If a cable is the suspected issue on the original HS80 RGB Wireless, a USB cable is relevant only if it fits the headset and supports data as well as charging for the USB-mode test. A charge-only cable will not establish whether that data connection works. Confirm connector fit and data capability rather than assuming any cable or receiver will be compatible.

Is no sidetone the same as a broken microphone?

No. Sidetone is the feature that lets you hear your own voice in the headset; not hearing it does not prove that Windows is failing to record. Run the Windows input test first and treat a normal recording as a sidetone issue rather than a microphone-capture failure.

Corsair documents a separate profile-file procedure for unresponsive HS80 sidetone. Because it involves editing a profile and setting it read-only, it is an advanced, sidetone-specific step—not a first-line fix for a microphone missing from Windows or recording silence. Do not edit the profile as a microphone repair if the Windows test itself is silent.

Can you replace the HS80 microphone boom?

Do not assume the boom is a user-swappable part. Corsair specifies a non-detachable microphone for the original HS80 RGB Wireless, so generic advice to unplug and reattach a detachable headset microphone does not apply to that model. If you suspect physical damage, check the support or warranty route for the exact HS80 variant before purchasing a part that may not fit.

For a replacement headset, compare the exact model you are replacing against the connection and control requirements you need: wired USB versus wireless receiver, whether Bluetooth is required, and the receiver and mute behavior. A product listing or search result for “Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless gaming headset” may help identify that specific model, but it is not a repair part or proof of compatibility. Do not buy a universal HS80 receiver, assume an HS80 MAX dongle works with an earlier model, or look for a detachable HS80 RGB Wireless microphone boom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there published success rates for these HS80 microphone fixes?

No credible HS80-specific repair success rate or failure-prevalence figure is established here. Corsair’s reset and gain figures are operating instructions, not independent measurements of how often a fix works.

Why might Discord not appear in Windows microphone permissions?

Microsoft notes that desktop apps do not appear in the individual Microsoft Store app list. For desktop software, check the Windows setting that allows desktop apps to access the microphone as well as the app’s own input selection.

Does a red blinking receiver mean the headset is broken?

Not by itself. On the original HS80 RGB Wireless it indicates the receiver cannot connect, while on HS80 MAX it can indicate the headset is in Bluetooth rather than RF mode; the model determines the next step.

What should I do if my HS80 mic works in Windows but not Discord?

Select the HS80 microphone in Discord’s own voice settings because an app update may have changed its input selection. If the Windows test records normally but Discord still fails, Corsair suggests resetting Discord Voice Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my HS80 microphone too quiet?

Position the flexible boom toward the left corner of your mouth, raise Windows Input volume gradually, and replay a test recording. If iCUE detects a compatible headset, Mic Boost in iCUE 5.14 or later can add up to 10 dB; extra gain may also increase background noise.

Can I use an HS80 RGB Wireless receiver with an HS80 MAX?

Do not assume so. The MAX has a different radio arrangement from earlier HS80 models, and the receiver and headset instructions are model-specific.

What if I can’t hear myself through sidetone?

First make a Windows input test recording. If Windows records your voice normally, the issue is sidetone rather than microphone capture; Corsair documents a separate advanced profile-file procedure for unresponsive sidetone.

Can I replace the HS80 RGB Wireless microphone boom?

Corsair specifies that the original HS80 RGB Wireless microphone is non-detachable. Check Corsair support or warranty options for the exact model rather than buying a generic detachable boom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For an HS80 mic not working on Windows, identify the exact model, clear mute, select it under Windows Input, and test a recording before changing software. Check privacy permissions and the model-specific cable, receiver, or radio mode next. Only move to firmware, drivers, or support if those checks fail; do not assume sidetone, a blinking receiver, or an app-only problem means the microphone hardware is broken.
