Alan Wake 2 has a documented unreliable-audio approach; Control Resonant does not have a similarly confirmed one. Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 audio team says its music can support, misdirect, or leave the player, and that the sound reflects characters’ uncertain state of mind. Control Resonant is described instead as a Dylan Faden-led action-adventure RPG built around a paranaturally warped Manhattan, exploration, mystery, and environmental storytelling. That distinction matters: the available descriptions support a comparison of their aims and storytelling, not a claim that both games use the same audio trick.
Genre descriptions differ, too. Alan Wake 2 is characterized as survival horror, while Control Resonant is presented as an action-adventure RPG. Resonant’s crisis and unstable setting invite a reading of psychological unease, but official descriptions do not establish it as psychological horror in the same genre sense.

How does Alan Wake 2 use sound to unsettle the player?
Alan Wake 2’s audio is designed to be an uncertain presence rather than a dependable guide. The audio team describes music that may support the player, play tricks on them, or disappear when they might expect it. Its uncertainty is intentional: sound can shape mood and place while reflecting characters who do not know exactly what is happening.
In an interview with A Sound Effect, audio team member Tazio Schiesari put the broader ambition this way: “We wanted the sound of the game to feel grounded and intimate, and oscillate between beauty and horror.” The contrast is important. “Grounded and intimate” does not mean reassuring; ordinary, close-feeling sound can make a frightening shift more unsettling when the game moves between beauty and horror.

Music can guide, misdirect, or withdraw
The interview describes the score as less like a constant companion than an independent presence. A player cannot assume that music will reliably announce danger, validate an interpretation, or remain present throughout a moment. That gives music a role in uncertainty itself: it can offer support, undercut it, or leave a gap where a cue might otherwise have been.
This is a creator-described design intention, not a guarantee that every player will interpret a particular sound in the same way. It is also more specific than saying the game has a scary soundtrack. The team describes music as capable of changing its relationship to the player, rather than functioning only as continuous atmosphere.

The team’s wording suggests three distinct experiences. A supportive cue can help a player orient emotionally, making a location or moment feel coherent. A trick can encourage an expectation and then complicate it, so the player has to question whether the sound is warning them or manipulating that expectation. Withdrawal removes the reassurance of a musical bed altogether. Silence is not automatically safe; in this design, the absence of a cue can itself become a source of doubt.
That distinction helps explain why “unreliable audio” is more precise than “atmospheric audio.” Atmosphere surrounds an event. An unreliable cue participates in the player’s interpretation of the event. Alan Wake 2’s audio team says the music can change roles in that way, although the interview does not claim that every track or every encounter is deceptive.
The score distinguishes places, then lets their identities bleed together
The audio interview says the score initially kept ordinary Washington State and the Dark Place sonically distinct. As communication between Alan and Saga developed, the musical signatures began to blend. This makes music do more than mark a location: its changing relationship to the two settings can reflect a developing connection between the characters.
The implication is not that sound alone explains the story. Rather, the score gives the player an expressive cue whose meaning can change with the relationship between characters and places. The music’s shifts become one part of how the game makes uncertainty audible.
The progression also gives the player a way to notice narrative change without a character explaining it directly. At first, a recognizable musical identity can help separate the ordinary world from the Dark Place. Later, when those identities overlap, the separation is less secure. That is a sound-based parallel to the story’s communication and its instability, not a claim that the score replaces dialogue or visual storytelling.
What is confirmed about Control Resonant’s audio and storytelling?
The available descriptions establish a strong setting and story framework for Control Resonant, but they do not confirm an unreliable-audio mechanic comparable to Alan Wake 2’s. Remedy announced it as a Dylan Faden-led action-adventure RPG set in paranaturally warped Manhattan; platform descriptions emphasize connected zones, exploration, and abilities and a weapon the player can develop.
That is a meaningful difference in what can responsibly be compared. The sources describe Resonant’s world, protagonist, genre, and ways of delivering story, but do not specify that music or sound is meant to deceive the player. This is a limit on what has been documented, not proof that the released game contains no unsettling or ambiguous audio.
Conversation and found material are documented story channels
In an interview with The Outerhaven, Remedy co-creative director Mikael Kasurinen said Dylan does not have internal narration. Instead, Dylan speaks with Zoe in person and by radio, while found objects and files also deliver story information. Treat that as interview reporting, not a complete or definitive feature list.

These channels give the player ways to learn about the story without an internal narrator spelling out Dylan’s thoughts. They do not, by themselves, establish that the information is unreliable or that the game uses sound to mislead. A character speaking by radio is a communication method; it should not be treated as evidence of an audio deception system without further confirmation.
The absence of internal narration may also change how players read silence. If Dylan is not constantly voicing private reactions, environmental documents, conversations, and the player’s own observations carry more interpretive weight. That can produce a feeling of uncertainty, especially in a reality-warping setting, but it remains an inference about presentation rather than a confirmed psychological-horror technique.
A new entry point is not the same as a fully explained world
PlayStation Blog reported Kasurinen describing Resonant as an independent journey that can be a player’s first step into the universe. He also emphasized retaining mystery, atmosphere, and tension. Those aims fit a story that may leave questions open, but they do not specify which audio techniques—or any particular psychological-horror conventions—the game uses to do so.
Resonant’s larger, more open take on Control was part of its world-premiere framing, while Xbox describes connected zones and exploration. Those descriptions point to a broader action-RPG structure. They are not enough to infer how often the game uses quiet, musical cues, radio effects, or sudden changes in sound.
What Dylan’s role adds to the comparison
Dylan’s mission includes confronting supernatural threats and searching for his sister, Jesse Faden. That premise places a personal relationship inside the larger paranatural crisis. It gives Resonant an obvious route to emotional tension, but a personal stake is not the same thing as an unreliable narrator or deceptive soundtrack.
Because Dylan communicates with Zoe both face to face and by radio, players can compare direct conversation with mediated communication as they encounter it. The interview does not say that one channel is more trustworthy than the other. Any claim that radio distortion, missing context, or contradictory messages forms a deliberate audio system would require a specific statement or an example from the released game.
How are the games different in genre and psychological horror?
Alan Wake 2 is explicitly characterized as survival horror in the audio-team interview. Control Resonant is described by Remedy as an action-adventure RPG, and PlayStation Blog emphasizes mystery, atmosphere, and tension. Calling Resonant psychologically unsettling is a reasonable interpretation of its paranatural crisis and warped city, but calling it psychological horror in the same established genre sense as Alan Wake 2 goes beyond those descriptions.
| Comparison | Alan Wake 2 | Control Resonant |
|---|---|---|
| Documented genre framing | Survival horror, as characterized in the audio-team interview | Action-adventure RPG, according to Remedy’s announcement |
| What the audio sources establish | Music may support, misdirect, or withdraw; sound aims to reflect character uncertainty | No equivalent unreliable-audio system is specified in the available announcement and interview descriptions |
| Story information described in the sources | The audio interview focuses on sound and music; it is not a full account of narrative delivery | Conversation with Zoe, including by radio, plus found objects and files, according to the director interview |
| Setting and player role | The audio discussion distinguishes ordinary Washington State from the Dark Place | Players take the role of Dylan Faden in paranaturally warped Manhattan |
| What can be concluded about psychological unease | The team explicitly describes sound intended to reflect uncertainty and move between beauty and horror | Mystery, atmosphere, tension, and a reality-warping crisis support an interpretive reading, not a confirmed genre label of psychological horror |
The table compares what the cited descriptions establish, not every feature of either game. In particular, the Alan Wake 2 audio interview is not a complete narrative analysis, and the Resonant announcement materials do not provide a detailed audio-design breakdown. It would therefore be misleading to treat the table as proof that one game has complex sound design and the other does not.
Why the genre distinction changes the comparison
Survival horror and action-adventure RPG describe different emphases, not a simple scale from frightening to unfrightening. The available material frames Alan Wake 2’s audio within survival horror, where its unpredictable presence can contribute directly to the player’s uncertainty. Resonant’s announced form puts action, exploration, connected zones, and player-developed abilities and a weapon in the foreground.
Those contrasts support a useful expectation, but not a prediction about every encounter. The official framing does not say Resonant will be free of horror, nor does it promise that its action-RPG structure will produce less tension. It does mean that the evidence for comparing the games’ horror is uneven: Alan Wake 2 has an explicit creator account of horror-oriented audio intent, while Resonant has descriptions of mystery and atmosphere without an equivalent audio account.
Rank #3
Psychological unease versus psychological horror
These terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Psychological unease describes an effect a setting, crisis, or unanswered question may produce in a player. Psychological horror is a genre classification that usually implies a sustained focus on mental instability, perception, or inner fear. Resonant’s warped Manhattan and Dylan’s crisis support the first reading. The cited announcements do not establish the second.
Alan Wake 2 has stronger evidence for connecting uncertainty to its sound design because the audio team expressly discusses characters’ unsure state of mind. That does not turn every unsettling moment into a clinical statement about a character’s psychology. It identifies an intended relationship between sound and uncertainty, while the player’s reaction remains personal.

What can you fairly conclude about unreliable audio?
You can say that Alan Wake 2’s audio team deliberately made music an unstable presence. You cannot say, on the evidence available here, that Control Resonant uses the same device—or that it never does. The fairest comparison is between a specific, creator-described audio approach in Alan Wake 2 and the world, genre, and story-delivery details confirmed for Resonant.
- Established for Alan Wake 2: The team wanted grounded, intimate sound that could move between beauty and horror; music could support, misdirect, or abandon the player.
- Established for Resonant: It stars Dylan Faden in warped Manhattan and is framed as an action-adventure RPG, with exploration, connected zones, and story information delivered through conversation and environmental material in the director’s interview.
- Not established for Resonant: An audio system specifically designed to deceive, mislead, or withdraw from the player.
- Interpretation, not a confirmed label: Resonant’s paranatural crisis and unstable world may create psychological unease, but the cited descriptions do not classify it as psychological horror in the same way as Alan Wake 2.
This distinction also prevents a common comparison error: treating an absence of detail in an announcement or interview as evidence of absence in the game. Until a specific Resonant audio feature is described by a reliable source, it is more accurate to leave that feature unclaimed than to infer it from the series’ atmosphere or radio conversations.
How to evaluate a future Resonant audio reveal
A useful test is to ask what the sound is doing, not simply whether it sounds eerie. Does a cue deliberately encourage a wrong conclusion? Does it change depending on Dylan’s perception or a character’s communication? Does the game remove or alter the cue to make the player question what just happened? Those would be evidence of an unreliable-audio device. A strong soundtrack, radio chatter, or unsettling ambience alone would not answer the question.
The same test keeps the Alan Wake 2 comparison fair. Its team has already described support, misdirection, and withdrawal as intended possibilities, but that statement does not mean the player should distrust every sound. The documented design is variable rather than universally deceptive.

If the deciding factor is a documented use of sound to destabilize the player, Alan Wake 2 is the clear match in this comparison: its audio team has directly explained that intention. If you are more interested in a new action-RPG journey through a warped city, Dylan Faden’s search for Jesse, and exploration built around connected zones, Resonant’s announced premise is the relevant one. The sources do not support a claim that Resonant offers the same kind of unreliable audio.
That is a choice between confirmed design emphases, not a verdict on which game is scarier or better. The Alan Wake 2 interview explains audio intent; the Resonant materials describe premise, genre, exploration, and some story-delivery methods. They do not provide matching, equally detailed accounts of both games’ sound design or horror pacing.
What the release information does—and does not—tell you
Remedy’s announcement-era information listed a 2026 release window for Control Resonant and platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Mac. Those are the platforms and timing announced at that point, not a confirmation of current availability or a later release date. The materials cited here do not establish a current release status, so check the relevant platform listing or a newer official announcement before making a purchase decision.
The announcement also describes Resonant as both a sequel and a new entry point. That combination matters to prospective players: the game is connected to the Control universe, yet Remedy presents it as an independent journey. It is reasonable to expect continuity of ideas and references, but not to promise that every detail from the earlier game will be retold.

Why a sound-design comparison remains incomplete
The GDC Vault listing identifies an Alan Wake 2 talk by audio director Richard Lapington about the game’s audio vision, framework, team communication, and production strategy. The listing establishes the scope of the presentation, but it is not a detailed transcript of every design decision. The sources described for Resonant likewise do not provide an equivalent sound-design account. A precise comparison of mixing, sound effects, music systems, or audio behavior in particular scenes would need evidence beyond these descriptions.
That limitation is especially important for practical buying advice. The confirmed materials do not provide current prices, edition contents, performance targets, or a guarantee that every announced platform will launch simultaneously. They establish the announced platforms and window, not a retail listing. Treat any later store page or Remedy announcement as the appropriate place to verify availability and cost.
A quick reader checklist
- Want creator-confirmed musical uncertainty? Alan Wake 2 has the clearer evidence: its team says music can support, trick, or abandon the player.
- Want an action-adventure RPG structure? Resonant is announced around connected zones, exploration, developable abilities, and a developable weapon.
- Want a new entry point? Remedy and PlayStation Blog describe Resonant as an independent journey that newcomers can use as a first step.
- Need a confirmed psychological-horror label? Alan Wake 2 is characterized as survival horror; Resonant is officially framed as an action-adventure RPG.
- Need current purchase information? Verify a current PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Epic Games Store, or Mac listing, because the announcement-era window does not establish present availability or price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play the first Control before Control Resonant?
Remedy’s co-creative director described Resonant as an independent journey and a possible first step into the Control universe. That supports starting with Resonant, although it does not promise that every reference or mystery will be explained for newcomers.
Does the GDC Alan Wake 2 audio talk document every sound cue?
The GDC Vault listing describes a talk about audio vision, framework, team communication, and production strategy. A session listing alone does not provide a cue-by-cue breakdown or establish what any one sound means in a particular scene.
Does a radio conversation in Control Resonant mean the audio is unreliable?
No such conclusion follows from the director interview. It reports that Dylan speaks with Zoe in person and by radio, but does not describe those conversations as deceptive or unreliable.
Is Control Resonant confirmed to be psychological horror?
No. Remedy describes it as an action-adventure RPG, while PlayStation Blog highlights mystery, atmosphere, and tension. Its warped setting can support an interpretation of psychological unease, but the cited descriptions do not apply the same survival-horror or psychological-horror label used for Alan Wake 2.
What exactly makes Alan Wake 2’s music unreliable?
The audio team says music can support the player, play tricks on them, or abandon them. It also describes musical identities for ordinary Washington State and the Dark Place that begin to blend as Alan and Saga communicate. Those are documented design intentions, not a claim that every cue is deceptive.
Will Control Resonant use the same audio system as Alan Wake 2?
That has not been confirmed. The announced materials discuss Resonant’s setting, action-RPG structure, exploration, atmosphere, conversations, radio, found objects, and files, but do not specify music designed to mislead or withdraw from the player.

Which platforms and release window were announced for Control Resonant?
Remedy announced a 2026 window for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Mac. Those announcement-era details do not confirm current availability, a final date, simultaneous launch, or price.
Does Alan Wake 2’s sound tell the whole story?
No. The A Sound Effect interview focuses on the audio vision and the relationship between music, place, and uncertainty. It is not a complete account of the game’s narrative delivery, so sound should be compared as one storytelling layer rather than the entire story system.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Alan Wake 2 has the documented unreliable-audio design: its team says music can guide, misdirect, or disappear while reflecting uncertainty. Control Resonant is confirmed as a Dylan-led action-adventure RPG in warped Manhattan with exploration, mystery, conversations, and environmental documents, but no equivalent audio deception system has been announced. Treat Resonant’s psychological unease as an interpretation until Remedy provides more specific evidence.
