Yes—compatible Nintendo Switch controllers can connect to an iPhone over Bluetooth. Put the Joy-Con or Switch Pro Controller into its own discovery mode, open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone, and select the controller when it appears. The important limitation is that Bluetooth pairing does not make every game compatible: the game must support controllers, and individual buttons or features can vary by app.

This guide covers the exact iPhone path, what is known about each Nintendo controller’s pairing control, how to pair one or both Joy-Con, and the recovery steps Apple recommends when a controller does not appear or a game ignores it.

What do you need before pairing a Switch controller with an iPhone?

You need an iPhone with Bluetooth enabled, a charged Nintendo controller, and a game that advertises controller support. Keep the controller close to the iPhone while pairing and temporarily reduce nearby Bluetooth connections if you suspect interference.

  • iPhone: Bluetooth must be turned on in Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Controller: It must be awake and placed in its wireless discovery or pairing mode.
  • Game: Apple says compatible games identify controller support on their App Store product pages.
  • Software: Apple recommends current iPhone software, while controller firmware updates come from the controller maker.

Apple Support summarizes the capability this way: “You can connect a compatible game controller to your iPhone through Bluetooth® or a wired connection.” Compatibility remains app-specific even after the Bluetooth connection succeeds.

How do you connect a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to an iPhone?

Use the Pro Controller’s SYNC button to start wireless discovery, then choose it from the iPhone’s Bluetooth list. Nintendo documents holding SYNC for at least one second for wireless pairing with a Switch console; that identifies the correct hardware control, while Apple directs users to the controller’s instructions for the exact pairing procedure with other devices.

  1. Wake the controller. Turn on the Switch Pro Controller and place it near the iPhone.
  2. Start discovery mode. Press and hold the controller’s SYNC button. Nintendo’s published instruction says to hold it for at least one second for wireless pairing on a Switch console. The console-specific menu is not part of the iPhone procedure; the relevant point for iPhone pairing is activating the controller’s wireless discovery control.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  4. Select the controller. Look under available devices and tap the entry for the Pro Controller when it appears.
  5. Test it in a supported game. Launch a game whose App Store listing indicates controller support, then check its control settings if the buttons do not respond as expected.

If the controller name does not appear, leave the Bluetooth screen open while repeating discovery mode. A wireless controller is not visible to the iPhone until it has been explicitly paired or placed into pairing mode.

How do you connect a Joy-Con to an iPhone?

Joy-Con pairing follows the same iPhone Bluetooth path, but each Joy-Con is a separate controller unit. Activate the Joy-Con’s own discovery control according to Nintendo’s instructions, then select the left or right controller entry that appears on the iPhone.

  1. Wake the Joy-Con. Make sure the controller has power and keep it close to the iPhone.
  2. Activate its discovery control. Use the pairing or discovery gesture specified in Nintendo’s Joy-Con documentation. Apple’s general controller guidance does not publish a universal Joy-Con button timing, so do not assume that the Pro Controller’s SYNC procedure applies unchanged to every Joy-Con model or situation.
  3. Open the iPhone’s Bluetooth list. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
  4. Choose the Joy-Con entry. Tap the left or right controller name when it appears under available devices. The iPhone may show the two controllers separately.
  5. Open a controller-compatible game. Use the game’s App Store listing and in-game control settings to confirm whether it accepts that Joy-Con and which inputs it uses.

Pairing one Joy-Con is useful when a game accepts a compact single controller. Pairing the second Joy-Con is a separate Bluetooth selection, and the game—not the Bluetooth menu—determines whether the two units can be used together or whether only one is recognized.

Can you connect both Joy-Con controllers to an iPhone?

Yes, you can attempt to pair the left and right Joy-Con as separate Bluetooth devices, but iOS does not guarantee that every game will combine them into one gamepad. Each unit can appear as its own entry, and the app decides whether it supports one controller, both controllers independently, or a particular set of buttons.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Put the first Joy-Con into its discovery mode and select it in Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Repeat the controller-specific discovery process for the second Joy-Con.
  3. Check the game’s App Store product page and its own controller settings before assuming the pair will function as a combined layout.

Apple warns that support for specific buttons and features varies by controller and app. A successful second Bluetooth connection therefore does not by itself prove that a game supports two-player input or a combined left-and-right layout.

How can you tell whether an iPhone game supports a Switch controller?

Check the game’s App Store product page for its controller-support information before troubleshooting the hardware. Apple uses the product page to signal compatible games, but the listing does not mean every button or advanced feature on every controller is implemented.

  • Before downloading: Review the game’s App Store listing for controller support.
  • After launching: Open the game’s control or input settings, if available, and look for a game-controller option.
  • When controls are incomplete: Treat missing buttons or features as an app-compatibility issue until the game’s documentation says otherwise.

Controller support can be narrower than touchscreen support. For example, a game may accept movement and action buttons but omit a particular Joy-Con feature or assign Nintendo-style buttons differently from their labels. Apple’s guidance is to check the game and remember that supported buttons and features vary by controller and app.

What is the difference between Joy-Con and the Switch Pro Controller on iPhone?

The Pro Controller is a conventional single gamepad, while Joy-Con are detachable left and right units. Neither has a guaranteed advantage in iPhone games: the practical choice depends on whether you want one full-size controller or smaller separate units and whether your game supports the inputs exposed by that controller.

Controller Physical format Pairing control Best fit Compatibility consideration Checked
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller One conventional gamepad SYNC button; Nintendo documents holding it for at least one second for wireless pairing with a Switch console Players who prefer a standard gamepad shape for longer sessions Game support and button mapping remain app-specific Oct 2026
Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R) Separate detachable left and right controller units Use the Joy-Con’s own discovery control; exact timing should be taken from Nintendo’s instructions Players who want compact detachable controllers or already own Joy-Con The iPhone may list left and right units separately; the game determines whether one or both work Oct 2026

The table describes format and documented pairing controls, not measured comfort, latency, battery life, or performance. Comfort is a preference: the Pro Controller has the more familiar full-gamepad layout, while Joy-Con offer smaller individual units and flexible ownership of one or both controllers.

How do you customize a connected controller on an iPhone?

For supported devices and features, Apple places controller customization at Settings > General > Game Controller. Apple’s current wireless-controller guidance associates these customization settings with iOS 16 or later.

  1. Pair the controller first through Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Open Settings > General > Game Controller.
  3. Select the connected controller and review the customization options that iOS and the controller expose.
  4. Test the revised mapping in a compatible game, because the app can still limit which inputs or features it accepts.

Do not treat iOS 16 as a universal requirement for basic Bluetooth pairing. The documented iOS 16-or-later qualification applies to the customization settings, while the basic connection flow is the Bluetooth pairing process described above.

Why is the Switch controller not showing up in iPhone Bluetooth?

If the controller is absent from the available-devices list, the usual cause is that it has not entered discovery mode. Work through these checks in order.

  1. Repeat discovery mode. For the Pro Controller, use the SYNC control. For Joy-Con, follow the controller-specific discovery instruction rather than assuming the Pro Controller’s button procedure.
  2. Stay on the Bluetooth screen. Keep Settings > Bluetooth open while the controller is discoverable and keep the hardware near the iPhone.
  3. Confirm Bluetooth is on. A controller cannot appear if the iPhone’s Bluetooth radio is disabled.
  4. Reduce competing connections. Apple recommends reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices when wireless interference may be contributing to the problem.
  5. Update software. Install current iPhone updates and obtain controller firmware updates from the controller maker.

If the entry still does not appear after those checks, stop and repeat the controller’s own pairing instructions. Apple’s guidance does not provide a universal Joy-Con button sequence, so presenting one as valid for every Joy-Con would be unreliable.

How do you fix a controller that was paired but will not reconnect?

Remove the old Bluetooth record and pair the controller again. This clears the iPhone’s saved relationship with that controller rather than changing the game’s compatibility.

  3. Choose Forget This Device and confirm.
  4. Put the controller back into discovery mode.
  5. Select it again under available devices and wait for the connection to complete.

After re-pairing, return to a game that explicitly supports controllers. If the controller reconnects in Bluetooth but not inside the game, use the app-compatibility checks in the next section rather than repeatedly deleting the Bluetooth record.

Why does the game ignore a controller that says it is connected?

A Bluetooth status of connected only confirms the wireless link; it does not confirm that the game implements controller input. Apple says compatible games identify controller support on their App Store product pages, and button or feature support can vary between games.

  • Verify the game’s App Store listing shows controller support.
  • Open the game’s own input settings and enable or select a controller profile if the game provides one.
  • Check whether the game supports the specific Joy-Con unit, both Joy-Con together, or a Pro Controller.
  • Try the controller in another clearly compatible game to separate a game-specific problem from a Bluetooth problem.

If only some buttons work, that is also consistent with app-specific support. A game may implement a subset of the controller’s inputs or use a layout that does not match the printed Nintendo labels.

What should you do when buttons behave differently than expected?

First determine whether the behavior is a mapping difference or an unsupported feature. The controller can be connected correctly while a game assigns buttons differently or ignores inputs it does not implement.

  1. Read the game’s control screen and look for remapping or alternate layouts.
  2. Compare the controls that respond with the game’s App Store controller-support information.
  3. Check Settings > General > Game Controller for supported customization options on iOS 16 or later.
  4. If a feature remains unavailable, treat it as a controller-and-app compatibility limit rather than a pairing failure.

Apple explicitly cautions that controller buttons and features vary by controller and app, so there is no universal mapping promise for Joy-Con or the Pro Controller across iPhone games.

How do you keep the pairing process reliable?

Use a consistent order: put only the controller you intend to pair into discovery mode, keep the iPhone’s Bluetooth page open, and test in a known compatible game immediately afterward. This makes it easier to tell whether a failure occurred during discovery, Bluetooth connection, or in-app support.

  • Pair one controller at a time when working with two Joy-Con.
  • Use the controller’s own documentation for its discovery gesture, especially for Joy-Con.
  • Install current iPhone and controller software before diagnosing intermittent behavior.
  • Forget and re-pair the device only after confirming it is in discovery mode.
  • Check the game’s App Store listing before concluding that a connected controller is defective.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair both Joy-Con as one controller on an iPhone?

You can pair the left and right units separately, but iOS does not promise a universal combined layout. Whether they function as one gamepad, two inputs, or only one recognized controller is determined by the individual game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need iOS 16 to connect a Switch Pro Controller?

No universal iOS 16 requirement is established for the basic Bluetooth pairing flow. Apple associates iOS 16 or later with the documented controller-customization settings under Settings > General > Game Controller.

Why does my Joy-Con connect but not control the iPhone’s menus?

Bluetooth pairing does not turn every part of iOS into a gamepad interface. Controller input is primarily exposed to apps that implement game-controller support, so a compatible game—not the general iPhone interface—is the appropriate place to verify operation.

Where can I check whether a particular iPhone game supports Nintendo controllers?

Check the game’s App Store product page for its controller-support information, then review the game’s own input settings after launch. The listing signals compatibility, but it may not specify every button or Joy-Con feature the game accepts.
