A changed lineup does not automatically entitle every ticket holder to a refund. Your options depend on what the event prominently advertised, which act changed, whether the concert is still going ahead, the terms tied to your original purchase, and how you paid. Save the original listing and change notice, then promptly contact the seller or organizer shown on your order. If you paid by credit card, you may also be able to ask the card issuer about a billing dispute—but a refund or chargeback is not guaranteed.
What should I do first when a concert lineup changes?
Before making a request, establish exactly what was promised when you bought the ticket and what the event now offers. A changed headliner is not the same situation as a changed opener, and a canceled event follows a different route from a show that is still scheduled.

- Save the original offer. Retrieve the original event page, advertisement, lineup announcement, confirmation email, order receipt, and any terms displayed when you purchased. A current listing may have been edited, so do not rely on it as the only record of the original lineup.
- Save the change notice. Keep the email, message, or announcement that identifies the change, including when it was sent. Save relevant seller or organizer replies as well.
- Write down the event and ticket details. Note the event name and date, order number, purchase date, seat or ticket type, seller, and the payment method used.
- Check the event’s current status. Is it proceeding as scheduled, canceled, postponed, or rescheduled? If the date or venue changed, record that too.
- Compare the promised and revised lineups. Identify the specific act that was advertised and what replaced it or was omitted. Note whether it was a billed principal act, an opener, a guest, or one of several performers at a festival.
This record helps you explain why the event is materially different from the one you agreed to attend. It is practical preparation—not an official platform checklist or a legal definition of a “significant” change.
Also check the purchase date and the terms shown for that transaction. Ticketmaster and Live Nation’s standard purchase policy is effective August 12, 2025, but the policy applicable to your order matters; do not assume the current policy automatically governs an earlier purchase. Keep a screenshot or saved copy of the event-specific terms if you can, and note whether the seller or organizer sent a separate refund notice with its own instructions or deadline.

Does a changed headliner or festival lineup qualify for a refund?
It may be worth requesting one, particularly when a prominent advertised performance has been removed or replaced, but the change alone does not establish a universal right to a refund. The terms for your original transaction, the nature of the change, the event’s status, and applicable law all matter.
Do not treat every lineup adjustment as equivalent. A replacement or omission involving a billed principal act may present a different factual case from a changed opener, guest, or participant in a multi-performer event. For a festival, explain which artist changed and how that artist was presented in the original advertisement; do not assume that any single lineup change makes the entire event refundable.
Platform policies also draw distinctions. Ticketmaster and Live Nation’s Standard Purchase Policy, effective August 12, 2025, says: “No refund will be given due to a change in or cancellation of a Participant or Opening Act.” AXS also excludes opening-act and guest-artist changes under its policy. Those exclusions concern the categories named in the policies; by themselves, they do not decide every claim involving an advertised principal performance that was replaced. Check the terms that applied to your actual order rather than assuming a policy or exception applies to every ticket.
The practical comparison is: What did the original listing emphasize? Was the changed act identified as a headliner or principal performance, or as an opener or guest? Was the event sold as a multi-performer festival where several acts were advertised? What exactly is now being offered? Describe those facts rather than relying only on the word “significant.” The advertisement, change notice, and purchase terms can help make that comparison concrete, but they do not by themselves guarantee that the seller will approve a refund.
Does the event’s status change how I request a refund?
Yes. A canceled event, a rescheduled date, and a show that is still proceeding can lead to different processes and deadlines.
- Canceled: Check the order and the seller’s cancellation instructions. Ticket platforms generally have cancellation-refund processes for qualifying events.
- Postponed or rescheduled: Look for an order-specific notice explaining whether tickets remain valid and whether the seller or organizer is offering a refund window. Record the stated deadline; do not assume the lineup change itself opens an additional refund period.
- Still scheduled with a changed lineup: Ask the original seller or organizer whether the change qualifies for a refund under the terms for your purchase. A scheduled show is not automatically treated as canceled because an act changed.
Ticketmaster’s refund instructions say an approved refund will show a Request Refund button in the buyer’s account; if it is not there, contact support about the organizer’s policy. AXS may email instructions or show a submit a refund request option for qualifying orders; follow the deadline in the notice. On Eventbrite, check Tickets → Request a refund when that option is available, or use Contact the organizer if it is not. Eventbrite’s platform-level relief for cancellation or prolonged postponement should not be mistaken for an automatic refund remedy for a lineup change.
An unavailable refund button is not, by itself, an explanation of why a request was denied. It may mean the order is not eligible for that platform’s self-service route, or that the organizer’s policy controls. Use the support or organizer contact option, identify the event and order, and ask whether the organizer has authorized a refund and what deadline applies. The platform may handle the transaction while the organizer’s terms determine whether a lineup-change request is accepted, so direct the request to the party identified by the order and its instructions.

Platform instructions and order-specific deadlines can change. Use the instructions attached to your own order and confirm any deadline with the seller or organizer before relying on a general help page.
How do I write a refund request?
Contact the seller or organizer shown on your original order. Keep the message factual, specific, and in writing so you have a record of what you asked for and when.
- Use the order’s refund or support controls if available; otherwise contact the organizer or seller through its official customer-support channel.
- Include the event name, event date, order number, purchase date, and the act or lineup originally advertised.
- State what changed and when the change was announced. Explain briefly why the promised performance was important to your purchase.
- Ask for a refund to your original payment method, and request a written decision and any applicable deadline.
- Keep a copy of your message, attachments, and any reply.
You can adapt this wording to your situation:
When I bought order [number] on [date], your listing advertised [act/lineup]. On [date], you announced [specific change]. Because [specific prominent promised performance] will not be provided as advertised, I request a refund to my original payment method. Please confirm your decision and any applicable deadline in writing.

Do not call the event canceled if it is still taking place. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises consumers to first ask the seller to resolve a purchase that was not what they ordered. That is a sensible first step for an ordinary refund request; it does not mean you must wait for a seller reply before sending a qualifying credit-card billing-error notice.
Keep the request focused on the remedy you want and the facts supporting it. Attach the original advertisement and the change announcement if the channel allows it, but retain your own copies too. If you speak with support by phone, make a note of the date, the representative or department if available, and what was said; follow up in writing so the request and any stated deadline are documented. If the seller declines, ask it to identify the applicable term or reason rather than relying on an unexplained “no.”
What if the seller refuses or does not respond?
Ask for the refusal and its reason in writing, then compare the explanation with the terms that applied to your original purchase. If you paid by credit card, promptly contact the issuer to ask about a dispute or chargeback and whether the facts support a formal billing-error notice. Neither step guarantees a refund.
When a credit-card billing-error notice may apply
Under Regulation Z, a qualifying billing error can include certain services that were not accepted or not delivered as agreed. The official interpretation recognizes “Delivery of property or services different from that agreed upon.” It also distinguishes a complaint about the quality of a service the consumer accepted. Whether a changed concert lineup fits a billing-error category depends on the facts; do not describe every disappointing performance as nondelivery or label an authorized ticket purchase as fraud. See the CFPB’s Regulation Z, § 1026.13.

For a qualifying written billing-error notice, the issuer generally must receive it within 60 days after sending the first statement showing the alleged error—not within 60 days after the concert. A ticket bought months ahead can therefore create a timing problem before the event takes place. Check your statements as soon as the charge appears and ask your issuer what options remain if that window has passed.
Regulation Z generally requires the issuer to acknowledge a qualifying notice within 30 days, unless it resolves the matter sooner, and to resolve it within two complete billing cycles, but no later than 90 days. These are procedural requirements for qualifying billing-error notices, not promises that the issuer will decide in your favor.
How to submit and manage the dispute
- Use the issuer’s designated billing-dispute address or an electronic channel the issuer expressly designates for billing-error notices. Do not assume a routine customer-service message meets the formal notice requirements.
- Include enough information to identify the account and transaction, including the charge amount and date, and clearly explain what was advertised, what changed, and why you believe the service was not delivered as agreed.
- Keep a copy of the notice and supporting records, such as the original listing, order confirmation, change announcement, and seller correspondence.
- Continue paying undisputed charges while the issuer investigates.
The CFPB’s credit-card billing guidance recommends keeping records of disputes and communications. The regulation does not require you to contact the merchant before sending a qualifying billing-error notice, so do not let an unanswered seller request cause you to miss the notice window.
A chargeback inquiry and a formal billing-error notice are related but not interchangeable in every case. Ask the issuer how to submit the kind of dispute you are making, where the formal notice must go, and what documentation it wants. If the first-statement 60-day period has passed, still ask what other dispute options may be available, but do not assume the federal billing-error procedure remains open or that the concert date starts a new 60-day clock.
What if I paid by debit card or another method?
The Regulation Z billing-error procedures described above are for credit-card accounts; a standard debit-card purchase is not automatically covered by those same procedures. Contact the debit-card issuer promptly and ask about its separate dispute process and deadlines. If you paid through another method, check that provider’s terms and the seller’s transaction record.
Who should request the refund if the ticket was transferred or resold?
Start with the seller and buyer account tied to the actual transaction, because the current ticket holder may not have the same refund controls as the original purchaser. Ticketmaster says that for a transferred ticket, an available refund goes to the original purchaser, not simply to the person who now holds the ticket.
If you bought through a resale seller, box office, or another ticket provider, contact the seller shown on your receipt and review the terms for that sale. Do not assume the primary-sale platform’s process applies to a resale transaction. If someone transferred you a ticket, ask the purchaser to check the order and submit any refund request the account allows.

When a ticket has changed hands, distinguish the person attending from the person who made the payment and holds the order. The original purchaser may need to make the request, and any refund may be returned to the original payment method. If you bought a resale ticket yourself, preserve the resale confirmation and contact that seller rather than relying on a primary-sale account that may not contain your transaction.

What amount can I ask to have refunded?
Request the remedy you believe fits the transaction, but do not assume every related expense is covered. Depending on the event and policy, a qualifying platform refund may include the ticket price, eligible extras, and service fees; fee treatment varies by seller and circumstance.
Ticketmaster says qualifying event refunds typically include service fees and eligible extras. Eventbrite describes fee treatment that depends on the circumstances. Neither statement establishes that a lineup-change request qualifies. Do not assume that travel, lodging, merchandise, or every ticket-related charge will be reimbursed; ask the seller to identify what its offer includes.
If the seller offers only part of the amount, check what the offer covers before accepting or declining it. Ticket price, service fees, and eligible extras may be treated differently, and a platform’s standard refund description does not mean every item is refundable in a particular lineup-change case. Keep receipts for related spending, but do not present travel, lodging, or merchandise as automatically included in the ticket refund.
Can a chargeback affect my tickets or account?
It can have consequences under the platform’s stated terms, so understand the risk before disputing a charge. Ticketmaster’s terms say a chargeback may lead to ticket cancellation and account-related consequences. That stated risk does not mean a platform can erase federal billing-error rights; it does mean a dispute is not a consequence-free substitute for asking the seller first when time permits.
Keep the distinction clear: an authorized ticket purchase with a later lineup dispute is not automatically fraud, and filing a chargeback does not guarantee repayment. Explain the actual issue accurately to both the seller and issuer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a lineup change make my concert ticket purchase fraud?
Not by itself. If you authorized the ticket purchase, describe the specific change accurately rather than reporting the transaction as unauthorized; the issue may instead be whether the service delivered matched the agreement.

Can I ask for a refund after I have attended the concert?
You can still contact the seller and explain what differed from the advertised performance, but attendance may matter when assessing whether you accepted the service. If you are considering a credit-card billing-error notice, ask your issuer promptly about the applicable deadline and how it treats your circumstances.
What if I bought my ticket from a friend?
Ask the person who placed the original order to check the seller’s account and contact the seller shown on the receipt. A transfer of the ticket does not necessarily transfer the original purchaser’s refund rights or account controls.
Should I stop paying my whole credit-card bill while the dispute is reviewed?
No. The CFPB says to continue paying amounts that are not in dispute while a billing-error investigation is pending. Follow your issuer’s instructions for the disputed amount and keep records of payments and notices.
Can I get a refund if the concert headliner changes?
You can request one, especially if a prominently advertised principal performance was replaced or omitted, but there is no universal refund right for every lineup change. Save the original listing and change notice, check the terms tied to your purchase, and ask the seller or organizer for a written decision.
Does a festival lineup change qualify for a refund?
It depends on the original advertisement, the performer who changed, the event terms, and applicable law. Explain how the artist was presented and what the revised lineup offers; do not assume one artist’s change automatically makes a multi-performer event refundable.
What if the opener or guest artist changed?
Ticketmaster and Live Nation’s standard policy excludes refunds due to a change in or cancellation of a participant or opening act, and AXS excludes opening-act and guest-artist changes. Check the policy for your actual order; those exclusions do not decide every claim about a changed principal performance.

Ticketmaster says to contact support about the organizer’s policy when an approved refund option is not displayed. AXS may provide instructions by email or in the order, and Eventbrite directs buyers to contact the organizer if a refund request option is unavailable. Ask whether a refund is authorized and what deadline applies.
When does the 60-day credit-card deadline start?
For a qualifying written billing-error notice, the issuer generally must receive it within 60 days after sending the first statement showing the alleged error. It is not generally 60 days after the concert, so check the statement as soon as the charge appears.
The Bottom Line
Save the original lineup advertisement, purchase terms, order details, and change notice. Compare the promised performance with the revised event, then contact the original seller or organizer promptly in writing and ask for a decision and deadline. A changed lineup does not automatically qualify for a refund, and a card dispute is not guaranteed. If you paid by credit card, check the statement date and ask the issuer about a qualifying billing-error notice without letting an unanswered seller request make you miss a deadline.
