Cloudways is the better default for most business sites, agencies, WordPress owners, and PHP teams that want hosting operations handled for them. Linode (Akamai Connected Cloud) is the better fit for developers who want root-level control, transparent infrastructure pricing, and the freedom to run their own Linux stack. The comparison is not a simple server benchmark: Cloudways is a managed control layer that can use Linode underneath, while a direct Linode server is infrastructure you administer yourself. You pay Cloudways for that operational layer and its support; you pay Linode for compute resources and take responsibility for configuration, security, backups, and incidents. The right choice depends on how much administration your team can absorb, the workload you run, and the total cost after add-ons and staff time.
What are Cloudways and Linode actually?
Cloudways and direct Linode sit at different layers of the hosting stack. Cloudways gives you an application-focused management platform: you choose an underlying cloud provider, deploy a supported application, and use Cloudways workflows for updates, monitoring, caching, security controls, backups, migrations, and support. Linode direct gives you a virtual machine and related cloud primitives; you decide which operating system, web server, database, firewall, deployment method, and maintenance schedule to use.

Cloudways can run on Linode, so “Cloudways vs Linode” can mean paying for a managed layer on Linode versus buying the Linode infrastructure yourself. A Cloudways server on Linode is not the same product as a direct Linode VPS: the underlying compute may be similar, but the administration model, panel, support scope, and bill are different.
- Choose Cloudways when reducing operational work is worth a higher and less predictable bill.
- Choose direct Linode when your team can administer Linux and values configuration freedom and infrastructure-level pricing.
Which service is cheaper for a small website?
Direct Linode has the clearer starting price. Cloudways pricing changes with the selected provider, server size, usage, and optional services, so its displayed amount must be checked at checkout. A lower infrastructure price does not automatically mean a lower total cost once administration time, backups, monitoring, migrations, and support are included.

| Direct Linode plan (US pricing) | RAM and CPU | Storage | Bundled transfer | Monthly price | Hourly price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nanode 1 GB | 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU | 25 GB | 1 TB | $7 | $0.0105 |
| Linode 2 GB | 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU | 50 GB | 2 TB | $16.80 | $0.025 |
| Linode 4 GB | 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs | 80 GB | 4 TB | $33.60 | $0.05 |
Those figures are the US-dollar prices listed by Akamai/Linode and use hourly billing with bundled transfer. They are infrastructure charges, not a managed WordPress or application-operations package. You still need to account for your own administration, backup storage, monitoring, security tooling, and any separate email or CDN service.

| Flexible plan page | Three-day trial without a credit card; a captured plan card showed 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB storage and 2 TB transfer for $11 per month | Provider and plan cards can change, so treat the amount as a time-sensitive display and verify it in the current checkout |
| October 20, 2026 hands-on review | $14 per month after the trial for a tested 1 GB DigitalOcean configuration | This is a dated test configuration, not a universal Cloudways price or a like-for-like Linode quote |
The apparent inversion—one Cloudways card showing $11 for more listed resources than the $14 review configuration—illustrates why you should not compare a remembered headline price with a different provider, region, or date. What does Cloudways include that a direct Linode server does not?
Cloudways packages routine application and server operations into its platform. Direct Linode supplies the machine and cloud controls, but the customer performs the work that Cloudways advertises as managed features.
- Deployment: Cloudways offers one-click deployment for WordPress, Magento, Laravel, and other PHP applications. A direct Linode server requires you to install and configure the operating system, web server, runtime, database, and application.
- Updates and security: Cloudways lists managed security updates, a firewall, DDoS protection, free SSL, and monitoring. With Linode direct, you set update policies, firewall rules, TLS renewal, intrusion controls, and alerting.
- Caching and performance tools: Cloudways includes application-oriented caching and object caching options. On Linode, you select and maintain your own cache, web-server configuration, and tuning.
- Backups: Cloudways provides automated and on-demand backup features. A direct VPS still needs a backup design, storage destination, retention policy, encryption approach, and restore testing that you operate.
- Migrations and staging: Cloudways advertises migrations, staging, cloning, Git, and SSH/SFTP workflows. On Linode, those workflows are available through tools you choose and maintain rather than a single managed interface.
- Support: Cloudways advertises 24/7 chat, email, tickets, migrations, monitoring, and application/server help. The cited Linode pricing and product pages establish infrastructure services, not the same managed application-support scope.
Cloudways does not provide cPanel or a browser-based file manager according to the October 20, 2026 hands-on review. That can be a learning curve for someone moving from traditional shared hosting, although SSH, SFTP, Git, and the Cloudways console cover the normal deployment tasks for many technical users.
Is Cloudways worth paying extra for managed operations?
It can be, when the alternative is paying an employee, contractor, or founder to perform the same work. The premium buys reduced administrative load and a support path; it does not buy unlimited customization or eliminate every operational decision.
When the premium usually makes sense
- A revenue-producing WordPress or WooCommerce site where a failed update or misconfigured firewall has a measurable business cost.
- An agency that needs repeatable deployments, staging, cloning, monitoring, and a support channel across several client sites.
- A PHP application team that prefers to focus on code and releases rather than Linux patching, web-server maintenance, and backup operations.
- A small business without an on-call administrator who can respond to a disk-full event, compromised account, database failure, or certificate problem.
When the premium may not be justified
- You already have engineers who routinely manage Linux, databases, firewalls, backups, observability, and incident response.
- Your application needs a custom runtime, unusual network topology, kernel settings, or services outside Cloudways’ supported application model.
- Your workload is bandwidth-heavy and predictable, making direct infrastructure economics more important than a managed panel.
- You are experimenting, learning server administration, or need unrestricted root-level changes.
Compare the complete monthly cost, not only the server card. Add your expected backup storage, CDN, email, monitoring, migration work, support requirements, and the hours your team will spend administering a direct VPS. If one outage or emergency contractor invoice would erase a year of infrastructure savings, the managed option may be economically rational even when its sticker price is higher.
Which is easier for WordPress and WooCommerce?
Cloudways is generally easier for WordPress because deployment, SSL, caching, backups, staging, migrations, monitoring, and common server settings are exposed through one managed workflow. Direct Linode can run WordPress very well, but you are responsible for building and maintaining that workflow.

Cloudways WordPress path
- Select a provider, server size, region, and WordPress application in the Cloudways console.
- Set the application domain, deploy SSL, and confirm DNS points to the assigned server address.
- Configure the supplied caching and application settings, then create a staging copy before major theme, plugin, or core changes.
- Enable an automated backup schedule and take an on-demand backup before a high-risk release or migration.
- Use monitoring and support when an application or server issue exceeds your team’s operating knowledge.
Direct Linode WordPress path
- Create a Linode instance with a Linux distribution, region, CPU, memory, storage, and transfer allowance suited to the site.
- Harden SSH access, configure a firewall, apply operating-system updates, and install the web server, PHP runtime, database, and TLS tooling.
- Set up WordPress, a web cache, object cache if appropriate, scheduled updates, log rotation, and resource alerts.
- Design off-server backups and test a restore; a snapshot alone is not a complete recovery plan if it remains in the same failure domain.
- Document deployment and rollback steps so another administrator can recover the site during an incident.
WooCommerce raises the cost of a mistake because orders, sessions, payment callbacks, and inventory changes are time-sensitive. Cloudways reduces routine server work, while direct Linode gives an experienced team more freedom to tune the stack. Neither option removes the need for application-level backups, update testing, and transaction-aware recovery procedures.
How do Cloudways and Linode compare for control?
Linode direct wins on control. You receive a VPS with selectable CPU families, RAM, storage, transfer, regions, block storage, APIs, and Cloud Manager controls, then decide how the machine behaves. Cloudways intentionally narrows that surface so common application operations are safer and faster for its supported stacks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision area | Cloudways | Direct Linode |
|---|---|---|
| Primary interface | Application-focused managed console | Cloud Manager, API, and your own administration tools |
| Root-level configuration | More constrained by the managed platform and supported stack | Customer-controlled operating system and server configuration |
| Supported application focus | WordPress, Magento, Laravel, and other PHP applications | Any stack you can install and operate on the VPS |
| Operations responsibility | Cloudways handles many routine platform tasks | Customer handles patching, firewall, backups, web server, and incidents |
| Billing model | Underlying-provider resources plus Cloudways pricing and selected add-ons | Direct hourly or monthly infrastructure pricing, with separate services as needed |
Control is valuable only when you can use it safely. A root shell lets you choose a newer runtime, custom daemon, or specialized network rule, but it also lets an incorrect command take the site offline. Managed constraints are a limitation for custom infrastructure and a safeguard for teams that want a repeatable application platform.
How does scaling work on each platform?
Cloudways presents vertical scaling as a managed workflow, while Linode direct uses resize and clone procedures that require more planning. Cloudways documentation describes scaling a Linode server as taking under 10 minutes, with downtime possible and no direct scale-down; a smaller configuration requires cloning instead. Those statements are product guidance, not an independent benchmark, and real downtime depends on the workload and procedure.
Cloudways scaling considerations
- Vertical scaling can increase server resources from the Cloudways interface without rebuilding the application.
- Plan a maintenance window if the selected operation or workload cannot tolerate interruption; do not assume every resize is zero-downtime.
- Check storage, database capacity, cache behavior, and application limits rather than increasing RAM blindly.
- Confirm the new recurring price and any provider-specific limits before applying the change.
Linode resize and clone considerations
- A resize changes the underlying instance plan and can require a restart or other interruption.
- Scaling down is not a direct reversal in the documented Cloudways-on-Linode workflow; cloning to a smaller server is the stated path.
- Before a resize or clone, verify backups, DNS strategy, disk usage, application configuration, and rollback steps.
- For predictable growth, use load testing and capacity thresholds so a resize is planned rather than an emergency response.
If your site has strict availability requirements, test the exact resize, failover, and DNS procedure in a nonproduction environment. “Under 10 minutes” is a directional statement from Cloudways documentation, not a promise that every application will remain available throughout the operation.
Are backups, security, and support better on Cloudways?
Cloudways offers more of these functions as built-in managed features. Direct Linode gives you the flexibility to assemble an equally robust design, but the design, cost, testing, and response remain yours.
Backups and restores
Cloudways includes automated and on-demand backups in its product material, which lowers the setup burden. Confirm the retention interval, storage location, restore scope, and any applicable limits for your plan before relying on it for a recovery objective. On direct Linode, combine image or snapshot capability with off-server backups, database-consistent exports, retention rules, and periodic restore drills.

Security maintenance
Cloudways lists managed security updates, firewall and DDoS protection, free SSL, and monitoring. You still need secure application credentials, least-privilege access, plugin and dependency review, and a process for responding to a compromised account. With direct Linode, the customer must implement and maintain operating-system patches, firewall rules, TLS renewal, vulnerability response, and log or intrusion monitoring.
Human support
Cloudways advertises 24/7 chat, email, tickets, migrations, monitoring, and application/server assistance. In one hands-on review, a human support agent joined in about 10 seconds and resolved an account issue; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed response time for every case. The cited Linode material establishes infrastructure controls and APIs but does not establish the same managed application-support scope, so compare the support contract you actually need.
Which service has better performance and reliability?
There is no fair universal winner from the available evidence. Performance depends on region, application, cache state, database, traffic pattern, and configuration. A TechRadar test recorded 903 ms Largest Contentful Paint in 2026 for a Cloudways server hosted in London, measured from Seattle; it was a single configuration rather than a head-to-head Cloudways-versus-direct-Linode benchmark.

The extra control also creates more ways to misconfigure the system. Run your own representative test from the regions where users actually connect instead of treating one LCP figure as a platform guarantee.
The Linode status page showed Cloud Manager, API, regions, backups, and listed locations operational when checked on October 25, 2026. That is a point-in-time status snapshot, not a long-term uptime guarantee. Whichever platform you choose, use external availability monitoring and define an incident and recovery plan.
Which option fits your type of project?
WordPress owner or small business
Choose Cloudways when you want guided deployment, managed updates, backups, caching, SSL, and a support route without becoming the site’s server administrator. Choose direct Linode only if you are comfortable owning maintenance or already have a reliable administrator.
Agency managing client sites
Cloudways’ staging, cloning, migrations, monitoring, and application-oriented controls can reduce repetitive work across client projects. Factor each client’s traffic, backup retention, support expectations, and the cost of Cloudways add-ons into your margin before standardizing.

Developer or DevOps team
Direct Linode is usually the stronger fit when you need root access, custom services, infrastructure as code, unusual network rules, or a runtime outside a managed PHP workflow. Cloudways can still be useful when the team wants a faster application platform for conventional PHP deployments.
Ecommerce operator
Cloudways is attractive when reducing routine server work protects revenue and your store fits its supported stack. Direct Linode can be appropriate for a technical commerce team that needs custom tuning, but document backups, payment callback handling, deployment rollback, and on-call ownership before launch.
Bandwidth-heavy application
Direct Linode’s bundled transfer and infrastructure-level configuration may offer better economic and architectural control. Cloudways documentation describes Linode as cost-effective with cheap bandwidth for bandwidth-heavy applications, but that is vendor guidance rather than an independent cost or performance study. Model transfer use, storage, caching, and operational labor together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Cloudways add-ons should be included in the budget?
Cloudways’ base server card is not the complete bill for every deployment. Captured examples of optional services include Rackspace Email at $1.50 per mailbox per month, DNS Made Easy at $0.50 per domain per month, Cloudflare Enterprise from $4.99 per domain per month, and malware protection from $4 per application per month. An advanced-support add-on is also offered. These prices are promotional and volatile; verify each amount and eligibility at publication and checkout.
- Email: Decide whether you need a hosted mailbox add-on or will keep mail with a separate provider.
- DNS: Include managed DNS only if its automation, resiliency, or workflow justifies the extra charge.
- CDN and edge security: Price the required plan for your domains and traffic rather than assuming the base server includes enterprise features.
- Malware and advanced support: Treat these as risk-management choices, not automatic substitutes for secure code, least privilege, and tested backups.
Direct Linode can also accumulate service costs for block storage, backup storage, monitoring, email, CDN, and security tools. Its advantage is that you choose each component and can avoid services you do not need; its disadvantage is that you must design, integrate, and maintain them.
How should you calculate the total cost?
Use a one-year worksheet that includes both cash charges and labor. Start with the expected average server size, not the smallest plan that works on launch day.
- Price the compute: Use the current Cloudways checkout amount for the selected provider and the direct Linode hourly or monthly price for an equivalent resource profile.
- Add storage and transfer: Include block storage, database growth, media, backups, and expected transfer rather than relying only on RAM and vCPU.
- Add resilience: Budget backup retention, restore testing, external monitoring, CDN or edge protection, and a second-region or failover design if your recovery objective requires it.
- Add communication services: Include email, DNS, transactional mail, and domain-related services where applicable.
- Value labor: Estimate patching, alert review, deployment, migrations, troubleshooting, and incident response for a direct VPS. Apply a realistic hourly rate or salary allocation.
- Price failure: Consider lost sales, missed leads, emergency contractors, and recovery time if the person responsible for the server is unavailable.
- Recheck volatility: Cloudways plan cards, promotions, and add-ons can change; confirm the current amounts immediately before purchase.
A direct Linode server often wins the narrow infrastructure-price comparison. Cloudways can win the total-cost comparison when it replaces enough administration and reduces operational risk. Make the decision with your workload’s recovery needs and your team’s available hours, not a headline monthly number.

What should you verify before switching?
- Confirm the application, PHP version, database engine, cron jobs, queues, webhooks, and scheduled tasks are supported on the target environment.
- Measure current CPU, memory, disk, database, and transfer use so the first server size is based on evidence.
- Export a restorable backup and record DNS TTLs before changing nameservers or traffic records.
- Test SSL, redirects, canonical URLs, media, forms, checkout, payment callbacks, email delivery, and administrator access on a staging or temporary hostname.
- Define who owns patches, alerts, backups, restores, security incidents, and after-hours escalation after the move.
- Keep the old environment available until verification is complete and DNS caches have expired.
Cloudways can simplify the migration itself with managed migration workflows, while a direct Linode move may require more manual provisioning and validation. In either case, a migration is complete only when users, background jobs, email, analytics, and recovery procedures have been tested—not when the DNS record changes.
How should you decide between Cloudways and Linode?
Pick Cloudways if your priority is a managed application platform, faster routine deployment, built-in operational features, and access to support for common PHP workloads. Pick direct Linode if your priority is root-level control, transparent infrastructure billing, custom software, and the ability to operate the entire stack yourself.
For a small brochure site, direct Linode’s $7 Nanode price is compelling only if you are willing to perform the administration that a managed host would otherwise absorb. For a revenue-critical WordPress, WooCommerce, agency, or conventional PHP deployment, Cloudways’ premium may be justified by reduced maintenance and a clearer support path. For a custom or bandwidth-heavy system run by experienced engineers, Linode’s direct model usually preserves more useful control and can keep infrastructure costs predictable.
Before buying, compare the current Cloudways checkout quote with the direct Linode plan, list every add-on and operational task, and decide who will respond when the site is slow, compromised, or offline. That exercise produces a defensible choice even when prices and product cards change.

Can I move a Cloudways site to a direct Linode VPS later?
Yes, but treat it as a migration rather than a switch you can undo with one setting. You will need to provision the target stack, copy files and databases, recreate cron jobs and security rules, test the application, and change DNS after validation. Keep a tested rollback and the original environment available until traffic and background tasks are confirmed.
Do I need Linux command-line skills to use Cloudways?
You can deploy and manage many common PHP applications through the Cloudways console without administering every Linux component. SSH, SFTP, Git, and command-line knowledge become useful for debugging, custom deployments, and advanced tuning, but Cloudways is designed to reduce the amount of routine server work you must perform.
What happens to domain email when a website is hosted on either platform?
Website hosting and mailbox hosting are separate decisions. Cloudways offers a Rackspace Email add-on, while a direct Linode deployment requires you to select and configure an email provider yourself; changing web hosts does not automatically move mailboxes, MX records, archives, or delivery settings.
Can Cloudways host applications that are not PHP?
Its documented application focus is WordPress, Magento, Laravel, and other PHP applications. A custom runtime or non-PHP service may require a different architecture or direct infrastructure where you control the operating system and deployment stack.
