Cloudways Site Manager is a strong fit for agencies and freelancers running several WordPress applications. Its Basic tier centralizes site inventory, users, themes, plugins, quick updates and single sign-on. Pro adds staged SafeUpdates with backup and rollback, scheduled automation, PageSpeed Insights monitoring, activity logs and update history. The important trade-off is that Pro is billed per WordPress application, while Quick Updates change the live site without a staging test.
That makes Site Manager useful when you need one dashboard and repeatable maintenance, but it is not a universal replacement for your own staging, QA or server monitoring. Before enabling automation, confirm your current per-application price, firewall allowlist, database topology and cloud-provider billing.

What is Cloudways Site Manager, and who is it for?
Cloudways Site Manager is a centralized control plane for WordPress applications on the Cloudways platform. Instead of opening each installation separately, you get a dashboard that lists connected applications, plan type, available updates and PageSpeed score, then lets you switch between sites and perform common maintenance tasks.
Cloudways describes it as “the newest WordPress management experience on the Cloudways Platform that gives you full control over your WordPress websites from one centralized place.” The statement was published by Cloudways Help Center author Syed Abuzar Mehdi on August 20, 2026.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The product is aimed at people who maintain a portfolio rather than a single personal blog:
- Agencies that need a common update policy across client sites.
- Freelancers who want one inventory for projects, themes and plugins.
- Small teams that need shared visibility without building their own management scripts.
- Owners of multiple WordPress applications who want optional automated testing before updates.
Cloudways’ 2026 launch material says more than 50% of its customers now manage 16 or more websites. That is a description of the customer base, not a published maximum for Site Manager. The software remains an application-level management layer: it does not turn separate sites into one WordPress installation or remove the need to understand each site’s hosting, database and business-critical workflows.
Is Cloudways Site Manager free, and what does Pro add?
Basic is free within the Site Manager product. Pro is the paid tier for teams that need controlled update automation and deeper audit information. Pro pricing is calculated per connected WordPress application, so the total rises with every app you attach; verify the current amount in your Cloudways account before committing.
| Capability | Basic | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Site overview and centralized application list | Included | Included |
| User, theme and plugin management | Included | Included |
| Quick Updates | Included | Included |
| One-click WordPress SSO | Included | Included |
| Bulk management from one dashboard | Included | Included |
| SafeUpdates with backup, staging clone and rollback path | Not included | Included |
| Scheduled automatic updates | Not included | Included |
| PageSpeed Insights performance monitoring | Not included | Included |
| Activity Logs | Not included | Included |
| Update History | Not included | Included |
Basic is therefore practical for inventory and manual maintenance. Pro becomes easier to justify when a failed update would cost more time than the per-application subscription, when you need an audit trail, or when you want a scheduled process to stop rather than publish an untested change.
How are Quick Updates different from SafeUpdates?
Quick Updates prioritize speed: they write selected core, plugin or theme changes directly to the live site. SafeUpdates prioritizes controlled release: it backs up production, tests changes in a temporary clone and deploys only after validation passes.

What happens with Quick Updates?
- Select the application and the available core, theme or plugin changes in Site Manager.
- Run the update from the dashboard.
- The change is applied directly to production.
- Check the live site yourself; Site Manager does not create an intermediate staging copy or run regression testing for this path.
This route is reasonable for low-risk patches, sites with a separate QA process or situations where a rapid fix matters more than a formal test. It is the wrong default for a high-value store, membership site or heavily customized installation where a compatibility problem could interrupt revenue or logins.

What does SafeUpdates do?
- Creates a backup of the production application before changing it.
- Clones a temporary staging environment.
- Applies the selected WordPress core, theme and plugin updates to that clone.
- Runs functional and visual checks against the updated copy.
- Deploys the tested changes to production only when validation succeeds.
If validation fails, SafeUpdates aborts the deployment. Cloudways documents rollback to the pre-update backup, so the live application remains on the previous known state rather than receiving a failed release.
How does visual regression work?
Visual regression can inspect up to five pages. The documented thresholds are:
| Threshold | Allowed visual difference | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 0% | Any detected difference is treated as a failure. |
| Standard | Up to 5% | Small visual changes can pass within the configured tolerance. |
| Low | Up to 10% | Larger differences are accepted for less sensitive pages. |
Five pages is useful for a representative smoke test, not proof that every template, checkout state, form or logged-in workflow works. Choose pages that expose your most important layouts and still perform your own business-flow checks when an update affects those paths.
What are Smart Skip, Activity Logs and History?
Smart Skip can let a scheduled run continue when one plugin or theme fails. Site Manager then runs visual regression on the changes that did succeed instead of treating the entire batch as an all-or-nothing operation. Review the failed component separately before the next maintenance window.

Activity Logs must be enabled. They are stored offsite and retained for three months. History records scheduled update outcomes for the previous 30 days. Those retention periods are useful for recent audits but are not a permanent compliance archive; export or document anything your organization must keep longer.
How do I manage several WordPress sites from one dashboard?
The most reliable rollout is to start with inventory, then prove one application, and only afterward expand to bulk operations.
- Start the account and trial. Cloudways’ onboarding FAQ describes a three-day free trial. After an upgrade, billing is pay-as-you-go. The same FAQ lists one free expert migration and a free WordPress Migrator plugin.
- Add the applications. Use the Site Manager control to connect the WordPress applications you maintain. Confirm that each site appears with the expected plan type, update count and PageSpeed score.
- Allow the management IP addresses. If Cloudflare, Sucuri or another firewall/CDN filters traffic, allow the IP addresses required by Site Manager. Without that exception, staging creation, checks or management actions can fail even when the WordPress login itself works.
- Choose Basic or Pro per application. Keep low-risk or manually maintained sites on Basic if appropriate. Select Pro for sites that need SafeUpdates, scheduled runs, performance scores, logs or history. Because billing is per application, record the resulting monthly total before enabling it across a portfolio.
- Clean up the inventory. Use the user, theme and plugin views to remove obsolete access and identify components that should never be updated in a blind batch. One-click WordPress SSO can simplify entry to connected sites.
- Test one update path. Run a Quick Update on a non-critical change or a SafeUpdates cycle on one representative site. Check the resulting page, forms, logs and rollback behavior before scheduling a broad run.
- Use bulk actions deliberately. Site Manager can bulk-update core, plugins and themes, bulk-schedule updates and review global history. Group sites by risk and maintenance window rather than sending every application through the same batch.
- Review outcomes. Check the global history after scheduled work, open the application that failed, and record whether Smart Skip left one component untouched. Keep a human owner for every batch even when the process is automated.
How many WordPress sites can I manage with Site Manager?
Cloudways does not publish a single universal site-count limit in the supplied feature information. The practical capacity of a server depends on the content management system, traffic and server specification. A dashboard can list many applications, but performance and update risk still have to be assessed per server and per site.
Cloudways recommends servers of 2 GB or larger for live sites and positions 1 GB mainly for testing or staging. That is a sizing recommendation, not a promise that every 2 GB server can host the same number of applications. A low-traffic brochure portfolio and a group of busy stores have very different CPU, memory, database and cache requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Site Manager supports WordPress Multisite, but it remains an application-level product. A multisite network is still one application with shared code and database concerns; do not assume that managing it is equivalent to managing a collection of independent installations.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
User management has a hard API display limit of 500 users per application. That limit affects what the interface can show and manage through the API; it is not a recommendation to create that many accounts. Use role hygiene and remove stale access before a portfolio becomes difficult to audit.
What does Site Manager Pro cost in practice?
The material available for this review does not state a current numeric Pro price. The decisive billing rule is that Pro is charged per WordPress application, not once for an unlimited portfolio. Multiply the tier price by the number of connected apps, then confirm taxes, currency and any account-specific terms inside Cloudways before purchasing.
Cloudways’ onboarding terms describe a three-day trial and pay-as-you-go billing after upgrade. That combination is useful for piloting one or two representative sites, but a trial result does not establish a long-term portfolio cost. Recalculate after adding every production, staging and client application that will use Pro features.
How do PageSpeed monitoring and update history help?
Pro adds PageSpeed Insights monitoring to the application overview. A score gives you a repeatable signal for spotting a regression after a theme or plugin change, but it is not a complete performance diagnosis. Treat it as a triage metric alongside real-user complaints, server resources, database behavior and your own key-page checks.
Global history is useful when an agency needs to answer which applications were scheduled, which updates passed and which failed during the last 30 days. Activity Logs provide a more operational record and are retained offsite for three months when enabled. Neither feature replaces a longer-term change-management system if clients or regulators require records beyond those windows.

Which Cloudways infrastructure option suits a multi-site portfolio?
Site Manager controls WordPress applications, but the underlying provider still affects cost, performance, scaling speed, bandwidth, data-center coverage and backup behavior. Cloudways characterizes DigitalOcean, Linode and Vultr as lower-cost choices for budget or development workloads, while AWS and Google Cloud target high-performance, global and fast-scaling workloads.
| Infrastructure family | Cloudways’ positioning | Billing behavior described by Cloudways | Typical decision question |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr | Lower-cost options for budget-conscious or development workloads | Monthly cap when a server runs for a full month; otherwise charged for active hours | Can the portfolio meet its traffic and resilience needs at a predictable lower cost? |
| AWS or Google Cloud | High-performance, global and fast-scaling workloads | Hourly usage without a monthly cap | Is rapid scaling or broader infrastructure coverage worth variable hourly spend? |
Cloudways Flexible is described as monthly pay-as-you-go, while Autonomous is hourly. The provider’s own billing model therefore matters even when the Site Manager interface looks the same. Compare a full-month estimate, burst traffic, backup requirements and data-center location before moving a group of sites.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery or prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Site Manager cannot connect, clone or validate an application | A firewall or CDN is blocking Site Manager IP addresses | Allow the documented Site Manager IP addresses through Cloudflare, Sucuri or the filtering layer, then retry. |
| SafeUpdates cannot complete temporary staging validation | A remote-database custom setup can prevent the temporary staging workflow | Confirm the database topology before relying on SafeUpdates; use a separately validated staging process when the topology is unsupported. |
| A Quick Update causes a live-site problem | Quick Updates do not create a staging copy or run regression tests | Restore from your available backup, test the change in staging and use SafeUpdates for future high-risk releases. |
| One component fails while the rest of a scheduled batch succeeds | Smart Skip allowed the run to continue | Inspect the failed plugin or theme, resolve its compatibility issue and schedule it separately rather than assuming it was updated. |
| Older actions are missing from the audit view | History covers 30 days and Activity Logs three months | Export or retain required records in your own system before those windows expire. |
| The user list appears incomplete | The API display limit is 500 users per application | Reduce stale accounts and manage access in smaller, auditable groups. |
| The bill is higher than expected after enabling Pro | Pro is priced per WordPress application | Count every connected app, including less obvious staging or client instances, and verify current account pricing. |
Is Cloudways Site Manager worth it for agencies and freelancers?
For a portfolio of several WordPress applications, Site Manager solves a real operational problem: finding updates, switching sites, applying common actions and checking outcomes from one place. Basic covers that centralization without an additional Site Manager fee. Pro is more compelling when failed updates are expensive, when clients expect an audit trail, or when a team needs scheduled maintenance with a documented rollback path.
| Your situation | Best starting approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One low-risk site and occasional manual updates | Basic with Quick Updates used selectively | You gain centralized control without paying per application for automation you may not use. |
| Several brochure sites with a repeatable maintenance window | Basic first, then Pro for sites where scheduling saves labor | Not every application has the same update risk, so tiering can control cost. |
| E-commerce, membership or heavily customized sites | Pro with SafeUpdates and a separate business-flow checklist | Backup, staging validation and rollback reduce release risk, but do not replace testing of every critical workflow. |
| Agency portfolio with client reporting requirements | Pro for applications that need logs, history and PageSpeed visibility | Recent outcomes are easier to review centrally, subject to the documented retention periods. |
Verdict: Cloudways Site Manager is a sensible multi-site WordPress operations layer, especially for agencies and freelancers. Start with Basic when central inventory and manual control are enough; choose Pro where staged updates, rollback, scheduled automation, performance visibility and audit records justify a per-application charge. Treat firewall access, remote-database compatibility, provider billing and your own regression checks as prerequisites rather than optional details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SafeUpdates test a payment or logged-in customer journey?
SafeUpdates performs functional and visual checks on the temporary clone, but the documented feature set does not promise coverage of every transaction, account state or third-party integration. For stores and membership sites, run a separate checkout and authentication test before approving a production deployment.
What should I document before the first bulk update?
Record the owner for the maintenance window, the pages that must remain available, the plugins that are business-critical and the backup or restore contact. Keeping that runbook outside Site Manager gives you a recovery path even when an update log has aged out.
Does Site Manager replace server-level monitoring?
No. Its dashboard focuses on WordPress applications, updates and selected performance signals. CPU, memory, database load, network behavior and provider incidents still require the server or infrastructure monitoring tools appropriate to your hosting setup.
Can I use Site Manager for a non-WordPress application?
The feature set described here is built around WordPress applications, including WordPress core, themes, plugins, SSO and WordPress Multisite. A non-WordPress application should be managed through the platform controls and tools intended for that application type, not assumed to support Site Manager workflows.
