There is no supported basis for calling Cloudflare or Google DNS universally faster on Android. A speed result depends on the phone, network, location, test method and resolver conditions—and no measurements accompany the claim that these services were pitted against each other here. The more useful difference is what each service offers beyond lookup speed: Cloudflare has optional malware and adult-content filtering, while Google Public DNS generally does not filter domains.

Both can be configured through Android’s Private DNS setting. When its secure connection is active, Private DNS encrypts DNS queries between your phone and the resolver you choose; it does not make all of your internet traffic anonymous or faster by itself.

What is the real difference between Cloudflare and Google DNS on Android?

For everyday Android use, the basic setup and purpose are similar: choose a DNS provider, and your phone asks that provider to translate domain names such as example.com into the network addresses needed to connect. The difference worth weighing is not a blanket speed ranking. It is the combination of filtering options, published data-handling policies, reliability on your connection and the transport Android uses to reach the resolver.

Android Private DNS changes the DNS operator from the resolver supplied by your network to the provider you specify. If the secure connection is working, the DNS request is encrypted between the device and that provider. Your carrier, Wi-Fi operator or internet provider may no longer see those DNS requests in the same way, but the resolver you select receives them. This is a change in who handles DNS—not a general privacy shield for everything you do online.

The IP addresses in the table are useful when configuring software that asks for DNS server addresses. Android’s Private DNS provider-hostname field is different: enter the hostname, not one of those IP addresses.

Which is faster, Cloudflare or Google DNS on Android?

Neither has a defensible universal speed advantage based on the available official documentation. DNS lookup time varies with the route from your phone to the resolver, network congestion, location, caching and the domains being tested. A result on one Wi-Fi network is not a prediction for mobile data or another city.

There is also an important distinction between DNS latency and internet speed. A DNS lookup helps the phone find the address for a domain; it is only one part of opening a page. A faster lookup does not establish that a site will load faster, that downloads will have greater throughput, or that the connection will feel better overall. Page content, server response, radio conditions and other network steps can matter more.

How to run a useful comparison

Compare the resolvers on the same phone and network, switching only the DNS provider between runs. Google Public DNS recommends testing a large sample—more than 5,000 domains—to reduce variability and exercise resolver caching. That is Google’s testing guidance, not an independent benchmark or proof that one resolver wins.

  1. Record the setup. Note the Android phone model and Android version, your location, whether you are on Wi-Fi or cellular, and the Private DNS hostname used.
  2. Choose a consistent test method. Use the same app or procedure for both providers. Record its sample size, how it handles cached results and the statistic it reports.
  3. Keep the conditions comparable. Test each resolver on the same network and as close together in time as practical. Repeat runs so a single temporary network fluctuation does not decide the result.
  4. Report what was measured. Identify whether the result is DNS lookup latency, a page-load measurement or another metric. Do not describe one as another.
  5. Check more than speed. Include whether lookups succeeded reliably and returned valid responses. A low latency number is not useful if queries fail or answers are incorrect.

Without those conditions and measured results, a precise claim such as “Cloudflare is faster” or “Google is faster” would be guesswork. Official setup and policy documents explain how the services work and what their operators say; they do not establish a head-to-head speed result for your Android phone.

How do I change Private DNS on Android?

On Android 9 or later, choose the provider-hostname option in Private DNS and enter the hostname for the service you want. The setting applies across networks, including cellular, according to Cloudflare’s Android setup guidance.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search Settings for Private DNS. The exact menu path varies by Android version and phone manufacturer; on some devices it appears under Network & internet or a similarly named network menu.
  3. Choose the option to specify a Private DNS provider hostname. Do not choose an IP-address field or enter a server address there.
  4. Enter one.one.one.one for Cloudflare’s standard resolver, or dns.google for Google Public DNS.
  5. Save the setting. If Android reports that it cannot connect to the Private DNS server, check the spelling and try again on a network that permits the connection.

Android may also offer options such as Off or Automatic. The labels and layout vary between devices. If you want to return to the phone’s normal network behavior, choose the available automatic setting rather than leaving a hostname you no longer intend to use.

Cloudflare also documents IPv4 addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, while Google lists 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. These addresses do not replace the hostname required by Android’s Private DNS hostname mode. A service or app that asks for conventional DNS server IP addresses is a different configuration context.

Does Android Private DNS encrypt DNS queries?

Yes, when Android establishes the secure Private DNS connection, it encrypts DNS queries between the phone and the selected resolver. That protects this leg of the request from being read or altered in transit as ordinary unencrypted DNS could be; it does not encrypt every connection your apps make.

The distinction matters because DNS is only the lookup step. Once your phone has an address, it connects to the destination separately. A website may use its own encrypted connection, but that is independent of Private DNS. Private DNS also does not hide the query from the DNS provider you selected, and encryption should not be equated with anonymity.

What changes with newer Android transport?

Android’s team announced on July 19, 2022, that Android 11 and later could use DNS-over-HTTP/3 (DoH3) for supported well-known resolvers after a Google Play system update. The announcement describes DoH3 as using separate logical streams and QUIC session resumption, design choices that can reduce some performance overhead associated with DNS-over-TLS (DoT), particularly when mobile networks change.

This is transport context, not evidence that either provider is faster. The Android team put the distinction plainly: “Which DNS service you are using is unaffected by this change; only the transport will be upgraded.” In other words, a change from one supported encrypted transport to another does not turn Cloudflare into Google or change which DNS service you selected. Whether a particular device and resolver use a particular transport depends on the Android update and resolver support.

Which service should I choose for filtering?

Choose based on whether you want DNS-level filtering, and be precise about which Cloudflare hostname you enter. Cloudflare offers separate 1.1.1.1 for Families hostnames; Google says its Public DNS generally does not block or filter domains.

  • Cloudflare standard resolver: one.one.one.one. This is the standard choice, not the Families filtering configuration.
  • Cloudflare malware blocking: security.cloudflare-dns.com.
  • Cloudflare malware and adult-content blocking: family.cloudflare-dns.com.
  • Google Public DNS: dns.google. Google says it generally does not filter or block domains, except in rare security or legal cases.

Filtering through DNS is not the same as a complete parental-control system or device security suite. It applies at the domain-lookup layer, and a DNS choice alone does not establish that every app, connection or access method will be covered. Select a Families hostname only if that filtering behavior is what you want; do not assume it is active on Cloudflare’s standard hostname.

What do the providers say about DNS data and privacy?

Cloudflare and Google publish different descriptions of their services and policies, but those statements do not support a simple, comprehensive privacy ranking. Compare the specific data, purpose and scope each policy describes instead of treating either resolver as a way to make browsing private.

In its 2024 Public Resolver privacy commitment, Cloudflare says it will not sell or share Public Resolver users’ personal data with third parties or use that data to target users with advertisements. It also says that, except for randomly sampled network packets captured for troubleshooting and denial-of-service mitigation, it will not retain source IP addresses from Public Resolver queries in non-volatile storage. The stated exception covers sampled packets representing at most 0.05% of traffic. That figure describes the maximum share associated with the sampling exception; it is not a claim that all queries are sampled or retained.

Google describes Public DNS as an independent, free resolution and caching service and says users do not need a Google account. Its FAQ says the service generally does not filter domains, subject to rare security or legal cases. Those statements address the service’s role and filtering behavior; they should not be stretched into a like-for-like comparison of every data category, retention practice or collection scope.

Whichever provider you choose, Private DNS moves the encrypted DNS request to that resolver rather than removing the need for a resolver. The practical question is which provider’s service, filtering behavior and stated policy you are comfortable using—not whether encryption makes the query invisible to everyone.

Is the 1.1.1.1 app the same as changing Android Private DNS?

No. Using Android’s Private DNS setting to enter a resolver hostname is not the same as installing Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 app, and the app’s WARP mode is not merely a different name for a DNS resolver.

Cloudflare describes DNS encryption as an option in the app. It separately says WARP mode routes all HTTP traffic through its service. That changes more than the destination of DNS lookups, so do not treat WARP as interchangeable with entering one.one.one.one in Android settings. If the goal is simply to select a DNS provider using the built-in Android control, use the Private DNS hostname method above.

What is the practical verdict?

For Android users, both Cloudflare and Google Public DNS are supported choices through Private DNS, and neither can be declared the universal speed winner from setup instructions or provider documentation alone. If DNS-level blocking is your deciding factor, Cloudflare’s Families hostnames provide explicit options; Google Public DNS generally does not filter. If speed is your deciding factor, test both under the same conditions and report lookup latency separately from page loads or overall internet performance.

The “real surprise” cannot responsibly be presented as a measured finding without the device, conditions and results behind it. What can be established is that resolver choice affects who handles DNS and what filtering options are available, while the encryption and transport details do not amount to a speed guarantee or an anonymity guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing DNS change my Android phone’s IP address?

No. A DNS resolver looks up the network address associated with a domain name; changing resolvers does not itself assign your phone a different public or local IP address. Those addresses are determined by the network and its connection setup.

Can my internet provider still see which websites I visit if I use Private DNS?

Private DNS encrypts DNS queries to the chosen resolver, but it does not make every part of a connection private. A network operator may still infer activity from other connection details, and the selected resolver handles the DNS requests.

Why does Private DNS fail on some Wi-Fi networks?

A network may block or interfere with the encrypted DNS connection, or the entered hostname may be misspelled or unavailable. Check the hostname first; if the network still cannot connect, switch back to the device’s automatic setting for that situation.
