Cloudflare is usually the more portable choice for a website that is not built around AWS. Its website plans put DNS, CDN, SSL, and unmetered DDoS mitigation behind one edge service, starting with a free tier. AWS Shield Standard is a sensible no-extra-fee baseline when your site already uses AWS, while Shield Advanced is designed for larger or more sophisticated attacks and adds application-layer controls, event visibility, DDoS cost protection, and access to AWS response support. The trade-off is a $3,000-per-organization monthly commitment for Advanced, plus usage charges and support prerequisites.

The right decision depends less on which name sounds stronger than on where your traffic enters, how much operational control you need, and whether an attack-related AWS bill is a material risk.

What is the difference between Cloudflare and AWS Shield?

Both services absorb and mitigate distributed denial-of-service attacks before they overwhelm an origin, but they are built around different architectures. Cloudflare is a general-purpose edge network that can sit in front of websites hosted by many providers. AWS Shield is an AWS-native protection layer for resources such as CloudFront distributions, Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing, Global Accelerator, EC2, and supported IP resources.

Cloudflare’s managed DDoS rulesets cover OSI layers 3 and 4 and HTTP layer 7. Its documentation says, “Cloudflare automatically detects and mitigates distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks via our autonomous DDoS systems.” Depending on the plan or product, administrators can also use adaptive DDoS protection, advanced TCP and DNS protection, and programmable flow protection. Some advanced capabilities, such as the advanced TCP and DNS features shown for Magic Transit, are product- and plan-dependent rather than universal website features.

AWS divides Shield protection into two tiers:

  • Shield Standard: automatic protection against common, frequently occurring network and transport attacks for AWS services. It is primarily an infrastructure baseline.
  • Shield Advanced: a paid service for larger or more complex events, with traffic-pattern and health-based detection, greater mitigation capacity, application-layer protection, attack visibility, proactive response, protection groups, and DDoS cost protection.

AWS Shield Standard does not by itself provide the same customizable web-request controls as a web application firewall. For layer-7 controls on Standard, AWS says to use AWS WAF, including its managed rule group for L7 DDoS protection. Shield Advanced includes an AWS-managed L7 DDoS rule group and can be used with AWS WAF for additional rules.

Which service protects more layers and attack types?

Cloudflare and Shield both address volumetric, protocol, and application attacks, but the controls exposed to you differ.

Cloudflare coverage

  • Layer 3: network-level floods.
  • Layer 4: transport attacks such as TCP and UDP floods.
  • Layer 7: HTTP request floods and other application-layer patterns.
  • Managed defaults: DDoS managed rulesets are enabled by default for zones onboarded to Cloudflare, IP applications onboarded to Spectrum, and prefixes onboarded to Magic Transit.
  • Tuning: if legitimate traffic is flagged, administrators can reduce sensitivity or change the action taken by a rule.

Cloudflare lists adaptive DDoS protection, advanced TCP and DNS protection, and programmable flow protection in its overview, but availability varies by plan and product. Standard website protection is the relevant comparison for most small and midsize sites; enterprise and specialized products may expose deeper controls.

AWS Shield coverage

  • Volumetric layer 3 attacks: traffic-volume attacks intended to saturate links or capacity.
  • Protocol layer 4 attacks: attacks that exploit transport behavior or connection state.
  • Application layer 7 attacks: abusive web requests that look more like legitimate sessions and therefore need request-level controls.

Shield Standard automatically handles common network and transport attacks on AWS. Shield Advanced adds traffic-pattern and health-based detection, mitigation capacity for large events, application-layer protection, event visibility, proactive response, protection groups, and DDoS cost protection. The Advanced tier is therefore less about adding a simple switch and more about operating a monitored, supported AWS protection program.

How much do Cloudflare and AWS Shield cost?

Cloudflare publishes website-plan prices, while AWS separates the Shield fee from the AWS resources and traffic that the protected architecture consumes. The figures below are the public prices identified for 2026; check the provider’s current terms before committing because plan inclusions and billing rules can change.

Service Public price and commitment What the price includes
Cloudflare Free $0 per month CDN, DNS, SSL, and unmetered DDoS protection on the public website plan.
Cloudflare Pro $20 per month with annual billing, or $25 per month with monthly billing Paid-plan features such as image optimization, bot-related controls, and ticket support; DDoS protection remains unmetered.
Cloudflare Business $200 per month with annual billing, or $250 per month with monthly billing Business features such as PCI DSS 4.0 support and a 100% uptime SLA on the plan table; verify current terms.
Cloudflare Contract Custom annual pricing Mission-critical applications with negotiated support and network terms.
AWS Shield Standard No additional Shield charge Included automatically with AWS services; underlying AWS, WAF, and data-transfer charges still apply where relevant.
AWS Shield Advanced $3,000 per month per organization, plus data-transfer usage, with a one-year commitment Advanced detection and mitigation, cost protection, and up to 50 billion AWS WAF requests per payer ID per calendar month under the stated terms.

AWS gives a concrete example of $3,000 monthly for an Application Load Balancer with 1,000 GB per month of regional data transfer. That is an example, not a universal bill: your resources, regions, traffic, WAF usage, and data transfer determine the actual total. The $3,000 Shield Advanced organization charge is also separate from those consumption charges.

Cloudflare’s “unmetered” DDoS wording means the listed website plans do not meter DDoS traffic as a separate protection charge. It does not mean every Cloudflare product is free, nor does it define the negotiated commercial terms of a contract plan.

Is Cloudflare cheaper than AWS Shield?

For a standalone website, Cloudflare is usually cheaper at the entry point because the Free plan includes DNS, CDN, SSL, and unmetered DDoS protection. Pro and Business provide predictable published prices. AWS Shield Standard has no separate fee, but an AWS-hosted site still pays for its AWS services, WAF where used, and data transfer.

For an AWS architecture that already uses CloudFront, Route 53, load balancers, or Global Accelerator, Shield Standard can be the least disruptive baseline because it is automatic. Shield Advanced is a different economic decision: $3,000 per organization each month, a one-year commitment, and usage charges must be justified by the value of advanced response, visibility, mitigation, and cost protection.

Do not compare only the protection line item. Include DNS and CDN costs, WAF requests, regional and internet data transfer, support plans, engineering time, and the financial impact of an attack. A low-priced edge plan can be less economical if it forces a second architecture; an expensive Advanced subscription can be sensible if an AWS bill spike or prolonged incident would be materially damaging.

Do I need Cloudflare if my site is on AWS?

No. An AWS-hosted site can use CloudFront, Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing, and Shield Standard without Cloudflare. Cloudflare becomes attractive when you need one edge control plane across multiple hosting providers, want its bundled DNS/CDN/SSL workflow, or prefer its public unmetered website plans.

Using both can be valid, but it introduces another layer to design and troubleshoot. You must decide which service is authoritative for DNS, where TLS terminates, which layer owns caching and rate limits, and how client IP information is passed to the origin and logging systems. A dual-edge design should have a documented failover and logging plan rather than being added as an untested spare.

How do I deploy Cloudflare DDoS protection?

Cloudflare’s standard website flow is comparatively short because the service becomes the authoritative edge for an onboarded zone.

  1. Onboard the website zone. Add the domain to Cloudflare and review the imported DNS records carefully. Keep only records that should be publicly resolvable.
  2. Point DNS as required. Change the domain’s authoritative nameservers at the registrar when Cloudflare instructs you to do so. Confirm that the required A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, and verification records remain correct.
  3. Verify proxy status and TLS. Put web records that should be protected behind Cloudflare’s proxy and confirm the SSL/TLS mode matches the certificate installed at the origin. Mail records normally should not be proxied.
  4. Start with managed defaults. DDoS managed rulesets are enabled by default for eligible onboarded zones. Let the defaults observe normal traffic before making aggressive changes.
  5. Monitor false positives. Watch security events, origin load, response codes, and customer reports. Legitimate crawlers, APIs, mobile clients, or unusual launch traffic may need a different sensitivity level.
  6. Tune sensitivity or action. If legitimate traffic is flagged, reduce sensitivity or change what the relevant rule does. Record each exception, its reason, and an owner so temporary bypasses do not become permanent blind spots.

Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans all show standard unmetered layer 3/4 and HTTP DDoS protection. Enterprise adds deeper customization and alerting, but exact enterprise packaging and support terms are account-specific.

How do I deploy AWS Shield Standard or Advanced?

AWS Shield works best when the protected resources and traffic path are already clearly defined in AWS.

Shield Standard workflow

  1. Place the site behind supported AWS resources. Common entry points include CloudFront, Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing, Global Accelerator, EC2, and supported IP resources.
  2. Confirm the traffic path. Ensure public DNS sends users through the intended edge or load-balancing resource rather than exposing an origin address directly.
  3. Use AWS WAF for web-request rules. Shield Standard supplies the automatic baseline for common network and transport attacks; customizable application-layer filtering requires AWS WAF.
  4. Monitor health and logs. Track origin health, load-balancer metrics, CloudFront behavior, WAF activity, and application errors so an attack is not confused with an ordinary outage.

Shield Advanced workflow

  1. Subscribe at the payer-organization level. Advanced is priced per organization, not as a separate $3,000 subscription for each individual protected resource.
  2. Protect the resources. Select the CloudFront distributions, load balancers, Route 53 resources, Global Accelerator resources, EC2 resources, or supported IP resources that need Advanced coverage.
  3. Configure health checks. Health-based detection depends on meaningful application and infrastructure health signals. A check that is always green or points at the wrong path weakens the value of this feature.
  4. Enable visibility and protection groups where appropriate. Group related resources when you need a consolidated view of an application or service rather than isolated resource alerts.
  5. Configure AWS WAF. Use the AWS-managed L7 DDoS rule group included with Advanced and add application-specific rules, rate limits, authentication controls, and allowlists where justified.
  6. Meet support requirements. AWS response-team engagement depends on eligible AWS Support arrangements and the required configuration. Confirm those prerequisites before treating response-team access as guaranteed incident coverage.
  7. Test operational ownership. Document who receives events, who can change WAF rules, how to contact AWS, and how to preserve logs during an incident.

Which service is better for application-layer protection?

Neither product should be treated as a complete application-security design. Cloudflare exposes managed DDoS rulesets for HTTP and plan-dependent adaptive controls. AWS combines Shield with AWS WAF; Advanced includes an AWS-managed L7 DDoS rule group, while Standard requires AWS WAF for application-layer protection.

Layer-7 attacks are difficult because malicious requests can look syntactically valid. Effective protection still depends on sensible rate limits, authentication and authorization, input validation, cache strategy, origin capacity, and monitoring. A DDoS service can absorb traffic and identify patterns, but it cannot decide which authenticated business action is safe without application context.

What are the operational trade-offs?

Decision axis Cloudflare AWS Shield
Hosting location General edge service for sites hosted across providers. Tightly integrated with AWS resources and traffic paths.
Baseline cost Free website plan with DNS, CDN, SSL, and unmetered DDoS protection; paid plans publish monthly prices. Shield Standard has no additional Shield fee, but AWS services, WAF, and data transfer still cost money.
Advanced incident response Enterprise support and alerting require contract-specific terms. Shield Advanced documents proactive response and response-team access for eligible support tiers and configured resources.
Application controls Managed layer 3/4 and HTTP layer 7 DDoS rulesets, with plan-dependent adaptive features. Shield works with AWS WAF; Advanced includes an AWS-managed L7 DDoS rule group.
Attack-related billing Standard website DDoS protection is advertised as unmetered, while other products and enterprise terms can affect total cost. Advanced includes documented DDoS cost protection; AWS resource, WAF, and data-transfer usage still needs review.
Operational complexity Usually straightforward for a standalone site after DNS and TLS are verified. Simplest when the architecture already uses CloudFront, Route 53, ELB, or Global Accelerator.

What should I check before choosing?

  • Map the real ingress path. List every public hostname, IP address, API endpoint, load balancer, CDN, and origin. An unprotected origin can undermine an otherwise strong edge deployment.
  • Separate infrastructure and application threats. Decide whether you need volumetric absorption only, or also request-level rate limits, bot controls, authentication enforcement, and custom WAF rules.
  • Calculate a full monthly baseline. For AWS, include Shield, WAF requests, CloudFront or load-balancer charges, and data transfer. For Cloudflare, include any paid plan, specialized products, support, and origin-provider charges.
  • Define response ownership. Identify who can alter DNS, WAF rules, origin capacity, and routing at 3 a.m. A protection service without an on-call process still leaves a response gap.
  • Plan for false positives. High sensitivity can block legitimate launches, APIs, crawlers, or regional traffic. Keep a tested rollback path and log every exception.
  • Protect the origin. Restrict direct access where the architecture permits, rotate exposed addresses when necessary, and ensure logs preserve client identity through the chosen proxy chain.

Is AWS Shield Advanced worth $3,000 a month?

Advanced is most defensible when an AWS-hosted service faces a meaningful probability of large attacks, needs coordinated AWS visibility and response, or could suffer substantial financial damage from attack-related resource consumption. The subscription also makes more sense when the organization can meet the one-year commitment and support prerequisites and will actually operate the health checks, WAF rules, alerts, and response procedures.

It is harder to justify for a small, low-risk site that only needs basic absorption. In that case, Shield Standard on an AWS-native architecture or Cloudflare’s Free, Pro, or Business website plan may cover the baseline requirement with less commercial commitment. Compare the expected cost of downtime, engineering response, and unexpected AWS usage—not just the subscription price.

What common mistakes make DDoS protection ineffective?

Leaving the origin publicly reachable

If attackers can discover and target the origin IP directly, they may bypass the edge controls. Review DNS history, cloud security groups, load-balancer listeners, and firewall rules, then restrict origin access to the intended edge path where practical.

Assuming Standard equals full application security

Shield Standard is an automatic baseline for common AWS network and transport attacks. It does not replace AWS WAF, secure authentication, rate limiting, or application-level capacity planning.

Changing sensitivity without observing normal traffic

Both aggressive blocking and overly permissive settings can cause incidents. Establish a normal traffic profile first, then make narrow, reversible changes with an audit trail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring billing controls

Cloudflare’s unmetered website DDoS wording does not cover every optional product. AWS Shield Advanced’s cost protection does not remove ordinary AWS, WAF, or data-transfer charges. Review budgets, alerts, and ownership before an incident.

Buying Advanced without response readiness

A subscription alone does not create a response process. Configure supported resources, health checks, WAF, monitoring, and eligible support before relying on proactive assistance.

Which option fits common website scenarios?

Independent site on mixed or non-AWS hosting

Choose Cloudflare first when portability, a bundled DNS/CDN/SSL service, and a free or predictable website plan matter most. Verify DNS, TLS, origin restrictions, and application rules during onboarding.

Site already built around CloudFront and Route 53

Start with Shield Standard because it is automatic and aligned with the existing AWS traffic path. Add AWS WAF for request-level controls, then assess Advanced only if attack scale, visibility, response, or cost exposure justify its commitment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large AWS service with material outage or billing risk

Evaluate Shield Advanced with AWS WAF, health checks, protection groups, monitoring, and an eligible support arrangement. The value is in coordinated detection, mitigation, response, and cost protection rather than in a standalone badge.

Multi-cloud organization

Cloudflare generally provides the more consistent edge layer across providers. Keep each cloud’s native controls enabled where they protect internal resources, and document how DNS, certificates, logging, and failover interact.

What should you remember?

Cloudflare is the portable, bundled choice for many websites: all listed website plans include standard unmetered layer 3/4 and HTTP DDoS protection, with prices ranging from $0 to published Pro and Business tiers and custom enterprise contracts. AWS Shield Standard is the automatic, no-extra-fee baseline for AWS customers, while Shield Advanced costs $3,000 per organization per month with a one-year commitment, usage charges, and additional operational requirements. Choose based on architecture, application controls, response capability, and total financial exposure—not on the protection label alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Cloudflare protect a website hosted outside AWS?

Yes. Cloudflare can sit in front of websites on other cloud providers, private infrastructure, or conventional hosting because its edge service is not limited to AWS resources. You still need to configure DNS, TLS, and origin access correctly so traffic cannot bypass the edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will AWS Shield stop a login or checkout attack?

Shield can help absorb and identify attack traffic, but business-specific login and checkout abuse requires AWS WAF rules, rate limits, authentication controls, and application monitoring. Those controls must distinguish legitimate customers from abusive requests.

Does enabling Cloudflare replace my web application firewall?

No. Cloudflare’s managed DDoS rulesets address denial-of-service patterns, while a WAF policy handles application-specific conditions such as paths, methods, headers, rate thresholds, and known exploit signatures. Review the exact controls available on your plan.

What happens to DNS during a DDoS attack?

DNS remains a critical dependency because users must resolve the protected hostname to reach the edge. Use a resilient DNS design, keep records accurate, and avoid exposing alternate hostnames or direct origin addresses that attackers can use to bypass protection.
