What does a CDN and security service actually do?
A content delivery network places copies of cacheable objects near users and routes requests through edge locations before they reach your origin. That can reduce distance and origin load for images, scripts, stylesheets, downloads and other static assets. Dynamic pages and APIs still require an origin request unless you deliberately cache or compute them at the edge.
The security layer evaluates requests at that edge. A WAF looks for malicious HTTP patterns, rate limiting controls abusive request volume, bot controls distinguish automation from people, and DDoS mitigation absorbs or blocks floods. API security and client-side controls address risks that a basic static-file cache cannot.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Because these functions sit in the request path, the provider you select affects DNS and certificate management, cache invalidation, log access, incident response, origin connectivity and the IP information available to downstream systems. A low headline price is not comparable if it excludes the support, security package or bandwidth your site needs.
How does Cloudflare compare?
Cloudflare is the lowest-friction option when you want CDN and baseline security in one account without negotiating an enterprise contract first. Its documented plans include CDN, WAF, SSL and unmetered DDoS protection, and its DDoS service detects and mitigates attacks across OSI Layers 3, 4 and 7.
What is included and what does it cost?
| Plan | Published price | What the comparison identifies | Price qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | CDN, WAF, SSL and unmetered DDoS protection are shown in the plan comparison | Self-serve plan; verify current limits and support before relying on it for a business-critical service |
| Pro | $20/month billed annually, or $25/month billed monthly | Same core CDN and security categories, with higher-tier controls than Free | Annual figure assumes annual billing; monthly figure is recurring monthly billing |
| Business | $200/month billed annually, or $250/month billed monthly | Higher-tier CDN, WAF and unmetered DDoS protection in the comparison | Annual figure assumes annual billing; monthly figure is recurring monthly billing |
| Enterprise and Enterprise with Advanced DDoS Protection | Not stated publicly in the reviewed material | DDoS protection is listed as available, with enterprise controls and support negotiated separately | Obtain a proposal that spells out support, logging, compliance, limits and response commitments |
The listed prices are Cloudflare’s published figures for 2026, not a guarantee that every feature, quota or add-on is identical across products. Confirm current plan details for your domain, traffic profile and region.
Where does Cloudflare work best?
- Small business and publishing sites: a domain can start behind a CDN and WAF without a lengthy procurement cycle.
- Lean SaaS teams: one control plane can cover delivery, certificates and common application protections while the team is still small.
- Organizations that need predictable entry cost: the Free, Pro and Business prices are easier to model than a traffic-metered contract.
What should you verify before choosing it?
Enterprise buyers should validate support escalation, advanced WAF and API controls, log retention, compliance terms, rate limits and any features that are sold separately. A bundled label does not tell you whether a particular API, bot or client-side use case is covered at the depth your security team requires.

Cloudflare’s deployment guidance also cautions against automatically putting another CDN in front of it. An extra proxy hop can delay first-contact filtering and can prevent the downstream network layer from seeing the true client IP. Treat a chained design as an exception that needs an explicit traffic and DDoS plan.
How does Akamai compare?
Akamai is designed for organizations that want delivery, cloud infrastructure and security from one globally distributed enterprise platform. Its own description combines compute, storage, networking, edge computing and content delivery; its 2026 FAQ reports more than 4,350 points of presence in more than 130 countries.
Which capabilities stand out?
- Global delivery: the reported footprint can be relevant when users, origins and regulatory requirements span many regions.
- Cloud and edge workloads: applications, APIs and AI workloads can be placed on the same broad platform as content delivery.
- Security breadth: the FAQ lists WAAP, API security, DDoS protection and microsegmentation alongside delivery services.
- Enterprise operations: large buyers can negotiate architecture, support, compliance and service commitments instead of relying only on a self-serve plan.
What does Akamai cost?
The reviewed official FAQ did not provide public list pricing. Expect a sales-led evaluation in which traffic volume, regions, cache and delivery mix, security modules, support tier, contract term and migration services shape the quote. Ask for each component to be itemized so a low delivery rate does not conceal separate charges for WAAP, API security, logs, support or burst capacity.
When is Akamai the better fit?
Akamai deserves priority when your organization already has enterprise procurement, a distributed operations team and requirements that span CDN, cloud and security. It can also be a sensible candidate when the provider’s edge presence matches difficult geographies or when a formal program needs consolidated accountability across several infrastructure layers.
That breadth can be more platform than a small site needs. If your immediate goal is simply to publish a brochure site, protect a handful of routes and see a transparent monthly bill, begin with a simpler self-serve option and document the requirements that would justify an enterprise platform later.
How does Fastly compare?
Fastly is aimed at teams that treat the edge as software. Its API-first model, programmable logic, rapid purge workflows, log streaming and live event monitoring appeal to engineers who want configuration in deployment pipelines and detailed evidence about each request.

How is Fastly priced?
| Fastly pricing element | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Requests | 0–100,000 requests/month free | A small proof of concept can exercise the service without a request charge, subject to the plan’s terms |
| Requests | $2.50 per 10,000 requests for 100,000–1 million requests/month | Request volume, not only transferred bytes, affects the bill |
| Bandwidth | 100 GB free, then regional per-GB rates | The reviewed price page did not state one universal post-allowance rate; model each serving region |
| Basic package | $1,500/month for 100 million requests | Package pricing is distinct from the small-volume usage tier; confirm included security and support |
| Starter package | $6,000/month for 500 million requests | Higher request allowance; larger packages were listed as contact-sales offerings |
Fastly’s metering makes a realistic traffic model essential. Count cache hits and misses, API calls, purge activity where billable, geographic bandwidth and event-driven spikes. Set internal alerts before a launch so an unexpected crawler, retry storm or live event does not become a surprise invoice.
What security and engineering features are available?
Fastly’s security packages list Next-Gen WAF, DDoS protection, client-side protection, bot management and API security. Its comparison material also emphasizes cache purge, performance controls, observability, log streaming, live event monitoring and CI/CD integration. Those controls are valuable when developers own edge behavior and need a fast feedback loop between a code change, a purge and the resulting traffic.
How should you interpret Fastly’s performance claim?
Fastly reports a 17% improvement in Largest Contentful Paint and a 57% improvement in time to first byte for websites migrating from Akamai. Those are vendor-reported migration results, not an independent benchmark or a promise that every site will see the same change. Your origin latency, cache headers, object sizes, user geography and application code can dominate the outcome, so measure your own representative pages.
What is the difference in procurement and day-to-day operation?
Self-service versus enterprise buying
Cloudflare publishes entry prices that let a small team start immediately. Fastly publishes low-volume usage rates and fixed packages, but a team still needs to understand metering and select the right security bundle. Akamai normally requires a sales conversation and a design review because its offering spans more infrastructure and contract dimensions.
Dashboard simplicity versus programmable control
A dashboard-first workflow is useful when a generalist owns DNS, certificates and basic WAF rules. An API-first workflow is useful when edge configuration must be reviewed, tested and deployed like code. Ask who will operate the service during an incident: a small IT team may value fewer moving parts, while a platform team may value granular APIs and logs.
Global traffic and origin placement
Map users, origins and data-residency obligations before comparing point-of-presence counts. Akamai reports more than 4,350 points of presence in over 130 countries, but a larger published footprint does not automatically mean lower latency for your exact access networks. Test the regions that generate revenue and the regions where your origin is hosted.

Static pages, dynamic applications and APIs
For mostly static content, cache hit ratio, purge speed and object delivery matter most. For personalized pages, checkout flows and APIs, inspect connection reuse, origin shielding, cache-key design, WAF tuning, rate limiting and API-specific controls. A provider can be excellent for images yet require more engineering work for a highly dynamic application.
Security depth
List the protections you actually need: volumetric DDoS coverage, Layer 7 rules, WAF customization, API schema or abuse controls, bot management, client-side monitoring, rate limiting, microsegmentation and log retention. Cloudflare documents Layer 3, 4 and 7 DDoS mitigation; Akamai lists WAAP, API security, DDoS protection and microsegmentation; Fastly lists WAF, DDoS, client-side, bot and API security. Confirm which controls are included in the plan you will purchase.
Should you put more than one CDN in the request path?
Usually not by default. Serially placing one CDN in front of another adds a network hop, can delay the first provider’s filtering decision and may hide the original client IP from the downstream mitigation system. Cloudflare’s guidance explicitly uses Akamai as an example of the kind of extra hop to evaluate.
There is a difference between chaining proxies and using multiple CDNs with deliberate traffic steering. An active-active design can send different users or domains to different providers, but it adds DNS, cache, certificate, logging, failover and incident-response complexity. Use it only when you have a measured availability or regional requirement, a tested steering method and owners for both platforms.

How can you run a fair proof of concept?
A short, controlled test is more reliable than a vendor-wide speed claim. Keep the origin, content and user geographies constant while changing one edge variable at a time.
- Inventory traffic: record monthly requests, bandwidth by region, cacheable object types, dynamic routes, API calls, streaming or download workloads and origin locations.
- Define security cases: list expected WAF rules, rate limits, bot behavior, API endpoints, DDoS escalation contacts, log retention and compliance constraints.
- Choose representative URLs: include a static asset, a cacheable HTML page, a personalized page, an API call and a cache miss that reaches the origin.
- Establish a baseline: capture TTFB, Largest Contentful Paint, error rate, origin load, cache status and real-user geography before changing DNS.
- Deploy a non-critical hostname: use a staging or low-risk subdomain, issue certificates, connect the origin and verify that logs preserve the fields your operations team needs.
- Exercise security controls: test benign requests that should pass, known-safe rate-limit thresholds, authenticated API flows, bot scenarios and your incident notification path. Do not generate harmful traffic.
- Model the bill: apply observed requests and regional bytes to Cloudflare’s plan, Fastly’s request and bandwidth rates or Akamai’s written quote. Include support, security modules, logging and migration work.
- Record operational effort: measure time to change a rule, purge an object, investigate a request, roll back a deployment and reach support.
- Set a go/no-go rule: select the provider that meets security and reliability requirements at an acceptable operating cost, not merely the one with the lowest synthetic latency.
What does migration involve?
Before changing DNS
- Lower DNS TTL ahead of the planned change, while recognizing that resolvers may not obey the value immediately.
- Verify the origin accepts the provider’s egress addresses and that host-header, SNI and certificate settings match.
- Preserve a direct-origin emergency path that is protected by access controls; do not expose an unrestricted bypass.
- Export current cache rules, redirects, WAF exceptions, rate limits, purge procedures and dashboards so they can be recreated and reviewed.
During the cutover
Start with a low-risk hostname or a small traffic slice, then watch cache status, origin errors, authentication, checkout and API telemetry. Keep the previous configuration available until propagation, long-lived connections and background jobs have been observed through a normal traffic cycle.
Best Value
After the cutover
Recheck certificate renewal, IPv6 behavior, WebSocket or streaming routes, upload limits, log delivery and alert ownership. Remove obsolete DNS records and firewall exceptions only after you have confirmed that no legitimate client still depends on them.
What common mistakes cause CDN or security problems?
- Comparing sticker prices only: add request and bandwidth metering, security packages, support, logs, migration and contract commitments.
- Caching personalized responses: an incorrect cache key can expose one user’s content to another. Mark private responses correctly and test cookies, authorization headers and purge behavior.
- Blocking legitimate automation: aggressive bot or WAF rules can break search indexing, payment callbacks, mobile clients and partner APIs. Start in a monitored mode where possible and tune from logs.
- Ignoring origin bottlenecks: a CDN cannot fix slow database queries, exhausted connection pools or an undersized origin. Compare cache misses and origin timing separately from edge timing.
- Assuming a large footprint guarantees speed: user access networks, peering, object size and application behavior determine the result for your audience.
- Chaining providers without an IP plan: document which layer sees the client address, where DDoS filtering happens first and how logs correlate across proxies.
- Leaving no rollback route: keep tested DNS, origin and rule backups and define who can reverse a change during an incident.
Which provider should you choose?
Choose Cloudflare when transparent entry pricing, bundled CDN and security, and a single dashboard solve your immediate needs. Choose Akamai when your program requires a globally distributed enterprise platform combining delivery, cloud and security, and you can support a sales-led operating model. Choose Fastly when engineers need programmable edge behavior, rapid purge, API-driven deployment and deep observability, and your finance team can manage request and bandwidth metering.
Whichever option you select, make the decision from your own traffic map, security requirements and proof-of-concept measurements. Revisit the choice if your content mix, regions, compliance obligations or operating team changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one provider for the CDN and another for WAF protection?
You can separate those functions, but doing so creates another trust boundary and may add a proxy hop. Confirm which system terminates TLS, sees the original client IP, makes the first blocking decision and owns incident response before adopting a split design.
How should I budget Fastly when traffic is unpredictable?
Create a low, expected and peak case using both requests and regional gigabytes, then add headroom for crawlers, retries and live events. Configure billing alerts and review cache-hit and origin metrics together so a traffic spike is explained before it becomes a recurring cost.
Does Akamai offer a self-serve free tier like some CDN plans?
The reviewed 2026 Akamai FAQ did not publish a comparable self-serve tier or list price. Ask sales for a written estimate that separates delivery, security modules, support, logging, minimum commitments and any implementation services.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is DNS load balancing the same as putting two CDNs in front of each other?
No. DNS or other traffic steering can direct different users to separate providers, while serial proxying sends every request through both. Steering still requires consistent certificates, cache rules, security policies, health checks and a tested failover process.
What should I measure after a CDN migration?
Track real-user LCP and TTFB by region, cache-hit ratio, origin response time, error and challenge rates, API success, purge completion and security events. Compare the same URL classes and traffic mix used for your baseline rather than relying on one synthetic location.
