Choose a unified cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) when your main problem is fragmented visibility and you can standardize policy, telemetry and remediation around one vendor. Choose separate cloud security posture management (CSPM) and runtime products when a specialist control is mission-critical, your SOC and DevOps integrations already work well, or you need to adopt capabilities incrementally. A CNAPP can connect code, cloud configuration, identities, workloads and production evidence into one risk model, but “platform” does not guarantee equal depth in every module. Validate the exact coverage, cloud parity, runtime controls, data model and operating effort in a proof of concept before signing a broad contract.

What is the difference between CSPM, runtime security and a CNAPP?

CSPM continuously evaluates cloud resources for misconfiguration, compliance gaps and posture risk. Runtime security—often packaged as cloud workload protection (CWPP)—protects hosts, containers and serverless functions against vulnerabilities and active threats while they are running.

Gartner’s 2024 definition, reproduced by Palo Alto Networks, describes CNAPPs as “a unified and tightly integrated set of security and compliance capabilities designed to protect cloud-native infrastructure and applications.” In practice, CNAPP suites commonly combine CSPM, CWPP, cloud infrastructure entitlement management (CIEM), code and infrastructure-as-code security, web and API protection, and data security posture management (DSPM).

The important qualification is that a CNAPP is an integration claim, not proof that every module is mature. CSO’s 2025 buyer guidance notes that few products implement every traditional category fully. A suite may have excellent asset discovery and posture analytics but only basic runtime blocking, or deep workload controls with less capable code scanning. Treat each capability as a separate product to test, even when it appears under one console.

Should you buy one CNAPP or separate CSPM and runtime tools?

Use the following decision rule: buy a unified platform if reducing investigation handoffs and building one risk-prioritization model matters more than choosing the best specialist in every category. Keep separate tools if a particular runtime, Kubernetes control, compliance engine or incident workflow is too important to compromise, or if your existing integration layer already correlates findings reliably.

Situation Usually the better fit Why
Multiple clouds, duplicated findings and unclear ownership Unified CNAPP Shared asset, identity, vulnerability and runtime context can produce one queue and one remediation owner.
A mission-critical workload needs unusually deep host, container or serverless controls Separate tools, or a CNAPP plus a specialist A focused product may provide stronger behavioral detection, blocking or response for that environment.
Existing SIEM, SOAR and DevOps pipelines already normalize security data Separate tools can remain viable You avoid replacing integrations that already perform correlation and escalation.
Security and platform teams need incremental adoption Separate tools or a phased CNAPP rollout You can deploy posture first, then runtime or code controls after operating procedures are ready.
One team owns cloud policy, identity, vulnerability and runtime remediation Unified CNAPP One policy model and risk graph can reduce cross-team handoffs.

What advantages does a unified cloud security platform provide?

One risk model instead of isolated finding lists

A CSPM alert that an object is public is more useful when it is linked to an exposed identity, a vulnerable workload and evidence that the workload is handling sensitive data. CNAPP correlation can prioritize that exploitable combination instead of making an analyst investigate several unrelated queues. The benefit depends on the platform ingesting the necessary identity, vulnerability and runtime telemetry; a single dashboard without correlation is only consolidation of screens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fewer consoles and remediation handoffs

With separate products, one team may discover a misconfiguration, another may own the identity, and a third may investigate the running container. A unified workflow can preserve the relationships and assign one issue to the correct owner. Fewer policy engines and escalation paths also reduce the chance that a fix in one system leaves a conflicting rule in another.

Code-to-cloud workflows

Mature CNAPP implementations connect infrastructure-as-code and application changes to the cloud resources they create. A developer can see that a proposed Terraform change would expose a production service, while an operations analyst can trace the deployed asset back to the repository and commit. This shortens remediation loops when the code, cloud and runtime integrations are actually enabled and maintained.

Shared automation

Common policy definitions, ticketing connectors and remediation playbooks can be reused across posture and workload findings. Automation should still require guardrails: a public-access fix that is safe for a test bucket could interrupt a production service when applied indiscriminately.

What are the limitations of a unified CNAPP?

Uneven depth across modules

Broad suites can be strong in asset inventory and compliance reporting while offering less behavioral analytics or response control than a dedicated runtime product. Ask for evidence of detection, prevention, host isolation, container process monitoring and serverless coverage for the exact operating systems and orchestrators you run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complexity and unused modules

A platform can expose dozens of policy families, agents, connectors and data-retention settings. If the organization buys modules it cannot deploy or staff, the theoretical consolidation benefit becomes shelfware. Map each licensed capability to a named owner, a data source and an operational procedure before including it in the business case.

Migration and lock-in

Replacing existing agents, policy languages and integrations can create a larger project than the license purchase suggests. During evaluation, verify whether raw events, normalized findings, asset relationships and policy definitions can be exported through documented APIs. Also check how incidents appear after an agent is removed and whether historical data remains accessible.

Performance and coverage trade-offs

Agentless API collection is efficient for broad inventory, but it cannot observe every process or network action inside a running workload. Agents can provide deeper runtime evidence and blocking, at the cost of deployment, permissions, upgrades and possible performance impact. A credible platform should state which claims require an agent, privileged access or additional sensors.

When do separate CSPM and runtime products make more sense?

You need specialist runtime controls

Some environments demand detailed host behavior analytics, kernel-level prevention, container admission controls, service-mesh visibility or serverless execution monitoring. If that control is tied to a material threat or regulatory requirement, select the product that demonstrates it rather than accepting a weaker module for the sake of one contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your integration layer already works

Organizations with a mature SIEM, SOAR, asset inventory and DevOps pipeline may already normalize identifiers, deduplicate alerts and route remediation. In that case, separate products can feed the existing system without forcing a wholesale migration. Confirm that the tools expose the fields your correlation rules require, including cloud account, resource, identity, image digest, cluster and repository identifiers.

You want replaceable components

Independent products let you change a posture engine without replacing a runtime agent, or add a Kubernetes control without renegotiating the whole security estate. This modularity is valuable when cloud strategy, acquisitions or workload technologies change quickly.

The trade-offs you must operate

  • Correlation, duplicate suppression and identity context become your integration responsibility.
  • Different scan schedules and policy languages can leave gaps between build-time posture and production runtime.
  • Multiple agents may compete for permissions, host resources and upgrade windows.
  • You operate separate contracts, consoles, data stores, retention policies and escalation paths.

How should you compare a CNAPP with separate tools?

Score evidence from representative workloads rather than counting feature names. The following axes expose differences that marketing checklists often hide.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Evidence to request
Coverage Are CSPM, CIEM, workload/runtime, code/IaC, API, data and Kubernetes controls included, and in which editions? A capability-to-license map and live demonstrations using your cloud accounts.
Runtime depth Does it detect, block, analyze behavior and support response on hosts, containers and serverless functions? Results from controlled vulnerable images, suspicious processes and an incident playbook.
Deployment model Which views are agentless, and which require host, workload or privileged agents? Permission lists, deployment diagrams, resource overhead and coverage exceptions.
Context and prioritization Can it link identities, exposed assets, vulnerabilities and runtime evidence into an attack path? Ranked findings that show the relationships and the reason for priority.
Cloud scope How consistently do controls work across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, private cloud and hybrid assets? Equivalent tests in each target cloud, not a single-cloud demonstration.
Operations Can it open and update tickets, create pull requests, trigger SOAR actions and assign policy ownership? Working SIEM/SOAR and DevOps integrations, including failure and retry behavior.
Economics What is the license unit, module packaging, telemetry allowance, agent footprint and implementation effort? A written quote with retention, overage, support and professional-services assumptions.

Which representative platforms deserve evaluation?

Microsoft Defender for Cloud

Microsoft documents multicloud and DevOps data collection, CSPM plans and server protection for Windows and Linux workloads across Azure, AWS, Google Cloud and on-premises environments. It is a natural first evaluation for an Azure-heavy organization that already operates Microsoft security tooling. Confirm which protections require paid plans, connectors or agents, and test the same controls in every non-Azure account you intend to cover.

Wiz

Wiz’s 2025 guidance emphasizes unified CSPM, CWPP and CIEM, an agentless architecture, runtime protection, automated remediation and DevOps integration. That combination can suit buyers prioritizing rapid multicloud visibility and a consolidated risk graph. Validate runtime depth for your operating systems, Kubernetes distributions, serverless services and response requirements instead of assuming agentless discovery equals full runtime protection.

Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud and Cortex Cloud

Palo Alto Networks describes its CNAPP approach as including CSPM, CWPP, code security, web application and API security (WAAS), CIEM and DSPM. It is aimed at organizations seeking broad security-estate integration and able to operate a larger platform. Request a module-by-module architecture and licensing explanation, particularly where product names, agents or consoles differ between Prisma Cloud and Cortex Cloud offerings.

CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security

The SANS 2024 survey chart lists Falcon Cloud Security among reported CNAPP solutions. Confirm its current module scope, cloud coverage, deployment requirements and licensing directly with CrowdStrike before comparing it on equal terms with broader suites.

How should the SANS figures be interpreted?

In the SANS 2024 chart’s CNAPP-vendor question, Microsoft Defender for Cloud was selected by 33% of respondents, CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security by 15% and Prisma Cloud by 10%. These are survey selections, not market share, revenue share or proof that one product is technically superior. The chart is useful for identifying products to evaluate, not for skipping a workload-specific proof of concept.

What matters most for multicloud and Kubernetes environments?

Check control parity across clouds

A platform may discover equivalent resources in AWS, Azure and Google Cloud while enforcing different policies or collecting different runtime evidence. Test identity analysis, network exposure, encryption, logging, vulnerability context and remediation in each cloud account type. Include private or hybrid assets if they are part of the production attack surface; do not count an on-premises connector as parity until its controls produce comparable evidence.

Separate Kubernetes posture from Kubernetes runtime

Kubernetes security has several layers: cluster and control-plane configuration, RBAC and service-account permissions, admission policies, image and IaC scanning, node protection, container process behavior, network activity and response. A CSPM view may identify a permissive role or exposed API server without seeing a malicious process inside a pod. Ask which checks run at admission, which require a DaemonSet or host agent, how managed Kubernetes services are supported, and how findings map back to namespaces, workloads and image digests.

Test ephemeral and serverless assets

Short-lived containers, autoscaled nodes and serverless functions can disappear before a scheduled scan. Measure discovery latency, event retention and the ability to investigate an asset after it terminates. If a product relies on periodic API snapshots, pair that evidence with runtime telemetry for incidents where process-level detail matters.

How do you run a meaningful proof of concept?

A proof of concept should compare evidence and operator effort, not polished demonstrations. Use the same scenarios for a CNAPP and for your separate-tool design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define outcomes. Choose measurable goals such as reducing duplicate queues, detecting a public resource linked to a high-risk identity, blocking a known container behavior, or creating a pull request for an IaC fix.
  2. Build a representative test set. Include AWS, Azure and Google Cloud accounts where applicable; at least one Kubernetes cluster; Windows and Linux workloads; a serverless function; production-like identities; IaC repositories; and your SIEM, SOAR and ticketing systems.
  3. Record collection requirements. Document API permissions, agents, privileged DaemonSets, network paths, scan intervals, data retention and expected resource overhead. Mark every capability that is unavailable without an add-on.
  4. Seed known conditions. Create controlled misconfigurations, excessive permissions, vulnerable images, exposed services and suspicious runtime actions. Keep test credentials and data isolated from production.
  5. Measure correlation. Check whether the product connects the cloud asset, identity, vulnerability, repository, workload and runtime event into one explainable priority. Record false positives, duplicate findings and the time an analyst needs to reach a decision.
  6. Exercise remediation. Test policy-as-code feedback, pull requests, tickets, chat notifications, automated fixes and SOAR actions. Verify approval gates, rollback, retries and what happens when the target resource has changed.
  7. Test failure modes. Disable an agent, revoke an API permission, rotate a cloud account, delete a short-lived pod and exceed a telemetry threshold. Confirm what the operator sees and how coverage is restored.
  8. Verify portability. Export raw events, normalized findings, asset relationships and policies through documented APIs. Check rate limits, retention, schema stability and whether another tool can consume the data.
  9. Score total effort. Include deployment, tuning, policy ownership, analyst training, cloud-team remediation and integration maintenance. A platform that removes two consoles but adds a difficult migration may not reduce operating cost.

What does each approach cost?

Current prices were not established for this comparison and vary by cloud, workload, module, telemetry volume, retention and contract terms. Compare the complete cost rather than a per-resource headline number.

  • License units: cloud accounts, assets, hosts, containers, workloads, identities, data volume or users.
  • Module packaging: determine whether CSPM, CIEM, runtime, code, API and DSPM controls are included or sold separately.
  • Telemetry and retention: ask about event ingestion, long-term storage, search limits and overage charges.
  • Agent footprint: budget deployment, upgrades, permissions, performance testing and exception handling.
  • Implementation: include connector work, policy migration, data normalization, training and decommissioning of old tools.
  • Ongoing integration: price the people who maintain SIEM/SOAR mappings, ticket workflows, pull-request checks and cloud account onboarding.

Request a written quote for the exact editions and regions you will operate, and have vendors state recurring charges, one-time allowances, support tiers and professional-services assumptions.

What mistakes derail the decision?

Choosing from a feature checklist

“Supports Kubernetes” can mean inventory only, while “runtime protection” can mean alerting without blocking or response. Require a demonstrated outcome for every control that affects your risk decision.

Assuming agentless means complete

Agentless collection is valuable for rapid inventory and broad coverage, but process behavior, kernel events and some response actions generally require workload telemetry. Map each detection and response claim to its sensor and permission requirements.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting findings instead of risk reduction

A product that reports more misconfigurations is not necessarily safer. Compare exploitable-path prioritization, analyst time, remediation success and the number of issues that remain open after tuning.

Ignoring identity ownership

Cloud exposure often depends on who or what can reach an asset. Include human roles, service accounts, workload identities and key rotation in the test; otherwise a posture score can hide the path an attacker would use.

Automating without safeguards

Automatic remediation needs scope, approvals, change windows and rollback. Start with low-risk, reversible fixes and record every action in the same incident trail used by your operations team.

Leaving policy ownership undefined

Decide who writes policies, who accepts exceptions, who tunes detections and who owns remediation for each cloud and cluster. A unified console does not resolve organizational boundaries by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which operating model is the most defensible?

Use a unified CNAPP as the primary control plane when it demonstrably links posture, identity, vulnerabilities and runtime evidence across your clouds, and when your teams can operate its policy and agent model. Use separate CSPM and runtime products when a specialist capability is essential or your integration layer already delivers reliable correlation. A hybrid design is also valid: a broad platform for inventory and prioritization plus a narrowly chosen specialist for a workload where depth is non-negotiable. In every case, make the decision from the same multicloud, Kubernetes, IaC and incident scenarios, then compare the evidence produced and the operator effort required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CSPM detect an active cloud breach by itself?

CSPM can identify conditions that make compromise more likely, such as public exposure or excessive permissions, but it is not a substitute for process, network and workload telemetry. Active-compromise investigation generally needs runtime signals, identity activity and a response workflow.

Is an agentless CNAPP enough for container security?

Agentless collection can provide fast inventory, configuration and image context without installing software on every host. It may not see in-process behavior, kernel events or support blocking and isolation, so test those requirements separately for your clusters.

How can separate tools share findings without creating duplicate tickets?

Normalize cloud account, resource, identity, workload and vulnerability identifiers in the SIEM or security data layer, then define one system as the ownership source for each finding type. Use APIs and deduplication rules that preserve the original evidence and update status back to the originating product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What contract terms should a CNAPP proof of concept verify?

Check export rights for raw events, normalized findings, asset relationships and policies; API rate limits; retention and deletion rules; support for changing cloud accounts; and charges for telemetry or overages. These terms determine how difficult it will be to replace a module or investigate an incident after migration.
