The latest dated figures show a cloud market still accelerating, but there is no single “cloud market size” number. Gartner’s annual forecasts measure spending categories such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and public-cloud end-user services, while Synergy Research Group reports quarterly cloud infrastructure-services revenue. Those measures cover different products and periods.
For 2026, Gartner’s October forecast puts worldwide IaaS spending at $292 billion, while Synergy reports $143.4 billion in cloud infrastructure-services revenue for the second quarter alone. AWS has the largest share in Synergy’s worldwide comparison at 28%, ahead of Microsoft at 20% and Google at 15%. These are market estimates and forecasts, not a ranking of service quality or total company revenue.

What do 2026 cloud computing statistics actually measure?
“Cloud computing” is an umbrella term. A spending forecast for public-cloud end-user services is not equivalent to an IaaS forecast, and neither is identical to quarterly revenue from cloud infrastructure services. Before comparing two figures, check the metric, period, geography, and whether the number is a forecast or an observed estimate.
Public-cloud end-user spending
End-user spending includes what organizations pay for public-cloud services across a broad set of categories. Gartner’s older 2024 forecast projected worldwide public-cloud end-user spending of $723.4 billion for 2025, up from $595.7 billion in 2024. Those are historical forecast-edition figures, not a measurement of 2026 actual spending.

Infrastructure as a service
IaaS covers rented compute, storage, networking, and related infrastructure capacity. Gartner’s IaaS forecasts are narrower than an all-public-cloud total, so they should not be added to a public-cloud end-user-spending figure.
Cloud infrastructure-services revenue
Synergy Research Group’s quarterly measure covers cloud infrastructure services and includes public-cloud infrastructure platforms. It is reported as revenue for a specific quarter, which makes it useful for tracking momentum but unsuitable as a direct substitute for a full-year spending forecast.

How much will organizations spend on IT and IaaS in 2026 and 2027?
Gartner’s October 21, 2026 forecast is the latest annual estimate in the available evidence. It separates total worldwide IT spending from the IaaS component, so the larger total should not be described as cloud spending.
| Metric | 2026 forecast | 2027 forecast | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide IT spending | $6.391 trillion | $7.352 trillion | All IT spending, not cloud alone |
| Worldwide IaaS spending | $292 billion | $367 billion | Infrastructure-as-a-service spending |
Both years are forecasts made in 2026. They describe expected spending, not audited totals. The distinction matters when a headline turns the $6.391 trillion figure into a “cloud market” number; that would overstate what Gartner’s IaaS category measures.
Gartner Distinguished VP Analyst John-David Lovelock summarized the direction in the July 27, 2026 release: “Data center systems and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are the top growth segments, reflecting accelerating investment in AI infrastructure, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications.”
How quickly is AI-optimized cloud infrastructure growing?
AI infrastructure is growing from a smaller base than the overall IaaS market. Gartner’s August 2026 forecast specifically tracks AI-optimized IaaS and separates inference workloads from model training.

| AI-optimized IaaS measure | 2026 forecast | 2027 forecast | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-optimized IaaS spending | $42.276 billion | $66.143 billion | Gartner forecast |
| Year-over-year growth | 96.4% | Not stated | 2026 forecast growth rate |
| Inference spending | $23.3 billion | Not stated | 2026 forecast |
| Training spending | $19 billion | Not stated | 2026 forecast |
Gartner expects inference spending to exceed training spending in 2026. That is a forecast about the transition from building models to operating them in business applications; it is not a final reported outcome. Gartner analyst Hardeep Singh described the driver this way in the August 10, 2026 release: “This growth is driven by continued demand for infrastructure to support large language model (LLM) training and the rapid operationalization of AI across enterprise applications and workflows.”
How large was the cloud infrastructure market in Q2 2026?
Synergy Research Group reported $143.4 billion in worldwide cloud infrastructure-services revenue in the second quarter of 2026. The figure was 43% higher than in the same quarter a year earlier, making it a quarterly market estimate rather than a projection for the whole year.
- Q2 2026 revenue: $143.4 billion.
- Year-over-year growth: 43%.
- Public IaaS and PaaS growth: 47% in the quarter.
- Concentration: the three largest providers accounted for 67% of the public-cloud market subset in Synergy’s release.
Public IaaS and PaaS services make up most of the broader cloud infrastructure-services market in that analysis. Because the 47% growth rate applies to that public-services subset, it should not be presented as the growth rate for every type of cloud infrastructure service.
Synergy Chief Analyst John Dinsdale called the pace notable in the Q2 release: “The accelerated cloud growth rate over the last three years, and in particular over the last four quarters, has been quite remarkable.”

Which cloud provider has the largest market share?
In Synergy Research Group’s worldwide Q2 2026 cloud infrastructure-services comparison, AWS had the largest share at 28%. Microsoft followed at 20%, and Google held 15%.
| Provider | Worldwide share, Q2 2026 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | 28% | Largest share in Synergy’s cloud infrastructure-services measure |
| Microsoft | 20% | Second-largest share in the same measure |
| 15% | Third-largest share in the same measure |
These percentages are shares of Synergy’s worldwide cloud infrastructure-services market estimate. They are not shares of total corporate revenue, profit, customer satisfaction, technical capability, or every cloud category. The separate 67% concentration figure applies to the three largest providers in the public-cloud subset and should not be confused with adding the three percentages above.

Why do cloud market-size figures appear to disagree?
Different figures can all be accurate when they measure different slices of the market. Use the following checks before placing two numbers in the same chart or sentence.
- Identify the product boundary. Public-cloud end-user spending is broader than IaaS. Cloud infrastructure-services revenue is another category with its own inclusions.
- Match the time period. A Q2 revenue estimate covers three months; an annual forecast covers a calendar year.
- Check the evidence type. “Forecast” means an expectation published before the period ends. A quarterly market estimate is closer to observed revenue but may still be revised.
- Keep geography consistent. The figures above are worldwide. Regional estimates cannot be compared with them without adjusting the scope.
- Read the release date. Forecasts change as economic conditions, exchange rates, demand, and provider disclosures change.
How did Gartner’s 2026 IaaS forecast change during the year?
Gartner’s estimates moved between its July and October 2026 editions. The change illustrates why a statistics article should label the forecast edition instead of presenting a number as permanent.
| Gartner forecast edition | 2026 worldwide IaaS | 2026 worldwide IT spending |
|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | $287 billion | $6.369 trillion |
| October 21, 2026 | $292 billion | $6.391 trillion |
The October edition is the later estimate and should be used when a current 2026 figure is required. The July numbers remain useful only as evidence that forecasts are revised.
What 2026 trends can businesses reasonably infer?
The figures support three carefully bounded conclusions.
AI is changing infrastructure demand
Gartner’s AI-optimized IaaS forecast grows rapidly and places 2026 inference spending above training spending. For infrastructure planners, that points to continuing demand not only for model-development capacity but also for production serving, application integration, and predictable operating capacity. The figures do not establish how much any individual organization should spend.
Quarterly growth remains strong
Synergy’s 43% year-over-year increase in Q2 2026 indicates strong market momentum over the comparison quarter. It does not guarantee that every provider, region, workload, or customer experienced the same growth.

Scale is concentrated among a few providers
The 28%, 20%, and 15% shares show a clear leading group in the worldwide infrastructure-services market. Market share can help explain ecosystem reach and purchasing options, but it cannot by itself determine suitability for a workload, compliance regime, latency requirement, or budget.
How should you use these statistics in a report or business case?
Use a statistic only after matching it to the decision you are making.
- For annual budget planning: use Gartner’s IaaS forecast and label the October 21, 2026 edition.
- For market momentum: use Synergy’s Q2 2026 revenue and 43% year-over-year growth, retaining the quarter in the citation.
- For AI capacity planning: distinguish AI-optimized IaaS from overall IaaS and separate inference from training.
- For provider concentration: use the AWS, Microsoft, and Google shares only with Synergy’s market definition and geography.
- For historical context: label Gartner’s 2025 public-cloud end-user-spending figure as a 2024 forecast edition, not a 2026 actual.
Keep the original unit beside every number: dollars, percentage growth, or market share. A percentage-point share and a year-over-year growth rate answer different questions and should never be swapped in a chart legend.

The available dated figures are concentrated on spending forecasts, AI infrastructure, quarterly infrastructure revenue, and provider shares. They do not establish a current 37-item statistical profile covering cloud adoption rates, security incidents, data-center emissions, energy use, migration outcomes, hybrid-cloud deployment, or regional spending.

How often should these numbers be updated?
Annual Gartner forecasts can change between editions, as the July-to-October revision demonstrates. Synergy’s market-share and revenue figures are quarterly, so a later quarter may alter both the market total and provider percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add Gartner’s IaaS forecast to Synergy’s quarterly revenue figure?
No. They use different market boundaries and time bases. Use them as complementary indicators, and state whether each number is an annual forecast or quarterly infrastructure-services revenue.
Does AWS’s 28% share mean it has 28% of all cloud spending?
No. The 28% figure is Synergy Research Group’s worldwide Q2 2026 share for cloud infrastructure services. It is not a share of every public-cloud product, total IT spending, or the provider’s total corporate revenue.
Why is the 2025 public-cloud figure useful if this is a 2026 article?
It provides historical context for how broad public-cloud end-user-spending forecasts were framed in an earlier Gartner edition. Because it is a 2024 forecast for 2025, it should not be used as evidence of 2026 actual spending.
What should I record when saving a cloud statistic for later use?
Save the publisher, release date, reporting period, market definition, geography, unit, and whether the value is forecast or observed. Without those fields, a later revision can look like a contradiction when it is actually a scope or edition change.
The Bottom Line
The defensible 2026 picture is a fast-growing but carefully defined market: Gartner forecasts $292 billion in worldwide IaaS spending, AI-optimized IaaS is expanding sharply, and Synergy’s Q2 estimate puts AWS, Microsoft, and Google at 28%, 20%, and 15% of worldwide cloud infrastructure services. Use each number with its original definition and date rather than treating “cloud market size” as one universal total.
