Clip-on earbuds that slip or sound quiet often need repositioning, not replacing. Their speakers sit outside the ear canal, so they do not seal out noise or deliver the same bass as in-ear earbuds; meanwhile, a speaker aimed away from the canal can make audio seem unusually faint. Check the orientation first, then adjust the fit, clean the speaker ports and troubleshoot the connection. If the earbuds still will not stay put after careful adjustment, their shape may not suit your ears.
Why do clip-on earbuds keep slipping?
The most common first thing to check is placement: an earbud can feel unstable if its clip is sitting in the wrong spot or at the wrong angle. Ear shape, skin friction and movement also affect retention, so a position that works for someone else may not work for you. Before changing accessories or deciding that the earbuds are defective, check the fit in a deliberate sequence. The correct position should feel stable without pinching, and the speaker should still be aimed toward the ear opening.

Correct the orientation and position
- Check that the left and right earbuds are on the correct ears. A reversed unit may feel awkward and can put its speaker in the wrong place.
- Find the speaker or acoustic element and position it toward the front of the ear. The battery compartment or larger housing is not necessarily the part that should face the canal.
- Place the clip where the design intends it to sit. Depending on the model, that may be the thinner part of the outer ear or the ridge just inside the ear opening. Do not force the housing into the canal; clip-on designs are meant to sit outside it.
- Play audio at a comfortable level and make small adjustments: slide or rotate the earbud, then listen again. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether moving it improved the fit, the sound, or both.
- If the manufacturer supplied different ear grips, try the intended sizes. For example, Soundcore documents M and L grips for AeroClip and says a larger grip can provide more stability.
Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than treating one angle as universal. Raycon says the control button should face down and the round speaker should rest against the ridge inside the ear; it describes a comfortable position as often between straight up-and-down and a slight forward tilt of 0 to 30 degrees. For Huawei FreeClip, the Acoustic Ball goes in front and faces toward the canal while the Comfort Bean rests behind the ear. Those are model-specific starting points, not a single rule for every clip-on design.
If you are unsure whether the fit is right, check it in a mirror while wearing the earbuds. Look for whether the speaker is facing the ear opening and whether the clip or bridge is resting where the product instructions show it should. Then move your head gently and listen for any change in sound or stability. A small adjustment may be enough; repeatedly twisting the earbud far from its intended position can make it less secure or move the speaker farther from the canal.

Account for movement, ear shape and sweat
A fit that seems secure while sitting still may loosen during a walk or workout. Xiaomi notes that vigorous movement can contribute to slipping, and that dry, smooth skin offers less friction. Ear shape matters too: a small or flatter outer ear may give an ear hook or clip less support. A product that works comfortably for a friend may not make the same contact with your ear.
Try adjustments with clean, dry ears, and wipe the earbuds and your ears after exercise. Huawei recommends wiping away sweat and, for workouts with FreeClip, moving the Comfort Bean down toward the back of the ear with the C-bridge about 30 degrees from horizontal. That orientation is Huawei’s workout guidance for FreeClip, not a general measurement for all clip-on earbuds. If you use another design, start with its own adjustment instructions.

Manufacturers including Xiaomi and Nothing note that ear shapes vary and affect fit. A different clip, C-bridge or over-ear-hook design may be a more realistic solution than an unapproved adhesive or generic add-on. A supplied grip can help when it is designed for that model, but a random accessory is not guaranteed to fit or improve stability.
Why are my clip-on earbuds so quiet?
First distinguish a normal open-ear sound from a fault. Because clip-on earbuds do not form a tight seal, they can have lighter bass, let in more surrounding noise and leak some sound. In a gym, outdoors, near traffic or anywhere with continuous background noise, that ambient sound can mask what you are listening to and make audio seem quieter even when the earbuds are working normally. This is an open-ear tradeoff, not by itself evidence that a speaker is broken.
Consider what “quiet” means in your case. If both sides sound thin or weak in a noisy place but are clearer in a quiet room, the open fit and the environment may explain much of the difference. If one side is distinctly lower than the other, or the volume has dropped noticeably compared with how the earbuds sounded before, check speaker alignment, ports, settings and the connection. The remedies are different: background noise calls for a realistic expectation or a more isolating design, while a sudden one-sided drop warrants troubleshooting.

Aim the speaker toward the canal
Reposition the earbud so its speaker points toward the ear canal and sits closer to it, without inserting the device. Soundcore recommends changing the wearing angle to bring the sound outlets closer to the canals. Bose gives more specific guidance for its Ultra Open model: check the fit in a mirror, try an approximately 45-degree angle and slide the earbuds down slightly if audio is quiet so the speaker ports sit closer to the canal. Treat Bose’s angle as model-specific, not a universal measurement.
It is worth checking each ear separately. One speaker may sit at a different distance or angle because your ears are not identical. Play audio while adjusting one side, then the other, rather than moving both by the same amount automatically. The goal is to bring the outlet close to the canal while keeping the clip comfortable and stable. If the sound becomes clearer but the earbud starts slipping, look for a compromise position or try a supplied grip rather than forcing the speaker into an uncomfortable spot.
Clean the speaker mesh and ports
Debris or wax over a sound outlet can reduce volume, sometimes more on one side than the other. Inspect both mesh surfaces and speaker ports under good light. Gently clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not push debris farther inside or use a method that could damage the speaker. Bose advises clearing debris or wax from its speaker ports. Soundcore says to clean AeroClip’s mesh every three months, or sooner if there is a significant drop in volume. That interval is Soundcore’s maintenance guidance for that model, not a universal schedule.
Cleaning can help when an outlet is obstructed, but it will not change the bass or isolation limits of an open design. If the ports look clear and the sound remains low, move on to volume, source and connection checks instead of repeatedly cleaning the mesh. Also keep charging contacts clean as directed by the manufacturer; that is a separate maintenance point from clearing the audio path.
Adjust volume with the environment in mind
Check the volume on both the playback device and the earbuds if the model provides separate controls. Confirm that the source is actually playing, and test a different app or track if the sound is unexpectedly faint. A clip-on speaker may need a different setting in a noisy place than in a quiet room, but maximum volume is not the first fix for poor alignment or blocked ports. Soundcore recommends keeping volume at 50% or lower in quiet environments when leakage is a concern, while noting that noisier surroundings may require adjustment. This is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not a universal hearing-safety threshold.

If the sound is thin rather than simply faint, remember that an open fit cannot provide the same seal as an in-ear tip. Raising volume may make audio louder, but it will not recreate the bass response or isolation of a sealed design. If you routinely need to turn open-ear earbuds up to overcome traffic, a gym or other continuous noise, consider whether an in-ear or noise-canceling option better fits that listening situation.
Why is one clip-on earbud quieter than the other?
A difference between sides can come from fit, a partially blocked speaker port, a device setting or a connection problem. Work through those possibilities before concluding that one earbud has failed. The two ears may also hold the earbuds at different angles, so compare how each speaker sits rather than assuming the housings will look perfectly symmetrical.
- Compare the fit. Check that each earbud is on the correct side and that both speakers are directed toward their respective canals. Adjust each side independently; ears can differ in shape. Use a mirror if needed to compare the speaker’s position against the ear opening.
- Check playback and volume settings. Confirm audio is playing, inspect device volume and any separate earbud controls, and check the device’s left-right balance or hearing-safety settings where relevant. A setting that shifts balance can make otherwise functional earbuds seem uneven.
- Try another source. Play a different track or test another app. Bose recommends checking other applications or stored content to help determine whether the problem is tied to one source. If the difference occurs only with one app or track, the earbuds may not be the cause.
- Inspect and clean both sound outlets. Look for wax or debris on the mesh or ports and clean them gently using the model’s guidance. Compare the two sides, since a partial obstruction can affect only one outlet.
- Refresh Bluetooth pairing. Disconnect a second connected device if applicable, restart the phone and earbuds, remove duplicate Bluetooth entries if they appear, then pair again. Raycon describes resetting as a way to clear saved connections and get both earbuds communicating again; Bose advises clearing the earbud device list and reconnecting.
Reset steps differ by model, so use the product’s instructions rather than applying another brand’s button sequence. If one side remains substantially quieter after correct fit, cleaning, known-good content, volume checks and fresh pairing, contact the manufacturer’s support or warranty service. Xiaomi directs users to after-sales service when a hardware malfunction is suspected.
How do I make open-ear earbuds stay on during exercise?
Start with the fit recommended for your exact model, then account for sweat and movement. A grip or angle intended for a different product may not hold securely on yours. Establish the fit before beginning the workout rather than repeatedly shifting the earbuds once they are moving.

- Make sure the speaker is in front and the earbud is on the correct side.
- Try the manufacturer’s supplied grip sizes or adjustment method. AeroClip, for example, has documented M and L ear grips; that does not establish that a grip for another model will fit.
- For Huawei FreeClip, Huawei recommends moving the Comfort Bean lower toward the back of the ear for workouts and setting the C-bridge about 30 degrees from horizontal.
- Wipe sweat away from your ears and earbuds, and start with a dry fit. If they become slippery during exercise, pause and wipe them rather than repeatedly pressing them into place while wet.
- Test stability with the movements you expect to make before relying on the earbuds for a workout.
If the earbuds repeatedly shift despite correct positioning and the manufacturer’s intended adjustments, a different retention shape may be a better choice. Do not assume a universal ear grip or adhesive will fix a mismatch between the ear and the housing. Consider whether a clip, C-bridge or over-ear hook gives your ear the most support; a better match is more useful than forcing an unstable fit.

Do clip-on earbuds need to point toward the ear canal?
Usually, the speaker should face toward the canal and sit close to it, but the correct position depends on the design. The goal is to bring the sound outlet near the ear opening without pushing an open-ear earbud into the canal. The speaker’s location matters because a change in angle can alter how much of its sound reaches your ear, even if the volume setting stays the same.
For Huawei FreeClip, Huawei says the Acoustic Ball should be in front and face toward the canal, with the Comfort Bean behind the ear. Raycon describes placing its round speaker against the ridge inside the ear. Bose’s Ultra Open guidance suggests checking the position in a mirror and moving the earbuds down slightly if sound is quiet. These instructions differ because the products have different shapes; use your model’s fit guidance as the authority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I choose a different earbud design?
Clip-on earbuds suit listeners who want an open fit, awareness of their surroundings or to avoid an in-canal seal. They are a weaker fit for priorities such as strong isolation, deep bass or reliable audibility in noisy environments. Soundcore identifies in-ear or noise-canceling headphones as better options when stronger bass, isolation or use in noisy settings matters more. No amount of repositioning can give an open-air design the same seal as an in-ear tip.
When considering another design, compare the shape that holds it on, how close its speaker can sit to the canal, and how it behaves during movement and sweat. An ear hook, C-bridge, clip and in-ear tip retain the earbud differently; a model with adjustable grips may offer more flexibility, while a sealed or noise-canceling design changes how much outside sound reaches you. Ear-shape compatibility is important: if a particular housing does not rest securely on your ear, another retention geometry may work better. Maintenance also varies: open-ear models still need their mesh, ports and charging contacts kept clean.
Think about exercise and listening context as well as sound quality. A design that stays put during ordinary wear may shift during vigorous movement, and sweat can affect the fit. A closed or noise-canceling model may be more useful in a noisy setting, while an open clip-on model may better suit a listener who values awareness of surroundings. The useful comparison is not simply which shape is best overall, but which combination of retention, speaker alignment, isolation and upkeep fits your ears and routine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to factory-reset clip-on earbuds before pairing them again?
Not necessarily. The recovery steps differ by model: Raycon describes resetting to clear saved connections, while Bose advises clearing the earbud device list and reconnecting. Follow the reset procedure in your own model’s instructions rather than applying another manufacturer’s sequence.

Compatibility is not established just because two earbuds look similar. Soundcore documents M and L grips for AeroClip, so check that an accessory is explicitly intended for your exact model before using it.
Can I wear clip-on earbuds if one ear is shaped differently from the other?
You can adjust each side separately; the two earbuds do not have to sit at identical angles. If one side cannot be positioned securely despite careful adjustment, that may reflect differences in ear shape rather than incorrect use.
Why do clip-on earbuds sound quieter outside than indoors?
Their open fit lets in more surrounding sound than a sealed in-ear design. Traffic, gym noise and other continuous background sound can mask audio, even when the earbuds are working normally. Aim each speaker toward the canal, but consider a more isolating design if you need consistent audibility in noisy places.
Should I turn clip-on earbuds all the way up if they sound quiet?
Not as the first step. Check speaker alignment, ports, source volume and connection first. Maximum volume will not restore the bass or isolation of a sealed earbud, and the appropriate setting depends on the environment and device.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How often should I clean clip-on earbud speaker mesh?
Follow the model’s care instructions. Soundcore recommends cleaning AeroClip mesh every three months or when there is a significant volume drop; that schedule is specific to AeroClip, not a universal interval.
The Bottom Line
Start with fit: confirm the sides, point each speaker toward the canal and make small adjustments while listening. If the earbuds still slip, account for sweat and ear shape, and use only model-compatible grips. For quiet or uneven sound, clean the ports, check volume and balance, test another source and refresh Bluetooth pairing. Open-ear earbuds naturally admit more outside noise and deliver less bass than sealed in-ear models; persistent instability or one-sided volume loss after these checks is a reason to seek manufacturer support or try a different design.
