Clear Steam’s Download Cache Safely—Your Installed Games Stay Installed

In the desktop Steam client, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, select the control, and choose Confirm. Steam says clearing this cache does not affect currently installed games. It does sign you out, so you must log in again before checking your Library and retrying the failed download or update.

The operation refreshes locally cached Steam configuration data from Steam’s servers. It can help when downloads, updates, or related startup actions fail, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every error and it is not the same as verifying game files.

What does clearing Steam’s download cache actually do?

Steam describes the operation as flushing locally cached configuration data and obtaining that data again from its servers. This can remove stale download-session information that is interfering with a download, update, or launch-related operation.

Steam’s explicit preservation statement applies to currently installed games: the client’s built-in cache-clear command is not an uninstall command. Steam also says you will need to log in again afterward. The command does not move a library, reinstall the client, or verify the contents of an installed game.

Do not extend the promise beyond what Steam documents. Steam’s support instructions do not specify whether every unfinished download keeps its exact progress, so treat partially downloaded or queued work as something to check after signing in rather than something guaranteed to be unchanged.

Steam Support’s official FAQ states: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.” That sentence defines the two most important expectations: installed titles remain installed, and your next step is authentication.

When is clearing the cache the right first step?

Use this control when a download or update repeatedly stalls, fails, or behaves as though the client has stale session information. Steam also lists cache clearing among possible fixes for games that will not download or start. It is a troubleshooting choice, not scheduled maintenance that needs to be performed every week or after every game.

Before you click the button, note the exact symptom and error text. A title that cannot download is a different case from an installed title that reports corrupt files, and both differ from a title that appears uninstalled because its library is no longer recognized. Recording the original state makes it easier to tell whether the cache reset helped.

There is no charge, extra utility, subscription, or purchase involved. The built-in desktop client is all that is required. Third-party “cache cleaners” are unnecessary for this procedure and can make it harder to identify which change caused a new problem.

How do I clear Steam’s download cache?

You can perform the complete procedure from the desktop Steam client; no drive, backup, purchase, or separate utility is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam. Start the desktop client and wait for its main window to load.
  2. Open Settings. Select Steam in the upper-left client menu, then choose Settings.
  3. Open Downloads. In the Settings sidebar, select Downloads.
  4. Choose Clear Download Cache. Scroll to the bottom of the Downloads page and select Clear Download Cache.
  5. Confirm. Accept the confirmation prompt. Steam will close or restart the relevant client session and require you to authenticate again.
  6. Sign in and inspect the result. Log back into Steam, open Library, and check the game or download that prompted the troubleshooting step.

The sign-in step is part of Steam’s stated behavior, not an indication that your games were removed. If the affected title is still listed as installed, try its download, update, or launch action again and note the exact error if it returns.

Menu labels can change as Steam’s interface is updated. If the wording or position differs slightly, look for the Downloads settings page and the control named Clear Download Cache; do not substitute an uninstall, library-removal, or folder-deletion command.

What should I check after signing back in?

A short post-clear check separates a refreshed download session from a library-location or file-integrity problem.

  • Open Library and confirm that the affected title is listed.
  • Look at the Downloads view for a paused, queued, or failed task.
  • Retry the specific download or update once, rather than immediately changing several settings at once.
  • If Steam shows an Install button for a title you know is on the drive, stop and follow the library-recognition steps below before starting a new installation.
  • If the game is listed as installed but will not launch, use file verification instead of clearing the cache repeatedly.
  • Check whether the drive containing the library is connected and visible to the operating system.

Keeping track of which symptom remains is important: a failed download, a missing library entry, and corrupt installed files are different problems with different Steam controls. Let any post-login checking or reacquisition finish before concluding that data has disappeared.

Will clearing the cache delete installed games or unfinished downloads?

Steam says currently installed games are unaffected. That is the documented safety boundary for this command; it should not be confused with uninstalling Steam or deleting a library folder.

Steam’s reviewed instructions do not promise that an unfinished download retains identical progress, queue position, or temporary data. After signing in, inspect the Downloads page and allow Steam to reassess the task. If it starts checking or reacquiring data, let that process finish before deciding that files were lost.

Do not use the cache-clear command as a substitute for a backup. It is a troubleshooting action, not a file-copy operation, and it does not create a recoverable archive of game data. If a download was only partly complete, be prepared for Steam to recheck or request additional data; the official preservation statement covers installed games, not every temporary download fragment.

Why does Steam say a game is uninstalled after the cache clear?

An “uninstalled” appearance can be a library-recognition or location issue rather than proof that the game files were deleted. Steam can recognize existing files when the game is started or when you begin the installation process, provided those files remain in the expected library location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the existing library in Steam Storage

  1. Open Steam > Settings.
  2. Select Storage, Steam’s current area for managing library locations.
  3. Review the listed drives and library folders.
  4. If the game is on another library, use the Storage controls to add or select that existing library location.
  5. Return to Library and let Steam inspect the title before starting a new download.

Older Steam support material describes a Downloads-based library-folder route, but the separate Storage area is the safer current path to use for library management. Do not delete, rename, overwrite, or format the existing game folder while trying to make Steam recognize it.

If the files are on another drive

Confirm that the drive is connected and accessible to the operating system, then check whether its library appears under Settings > Storage. If the folder is present but Steam still cannot use it, the issue may involve permissions, a disconnected volume, or a damaged library folder rather than download-cache data.

Starting a second installation into a different folder can consume substantial space and create duplicate files. First point Steam to the library that already contains the title. If Steam then offers to discover or validate those files, follow that process and watch the selected destination so the original folder is not overwritten.

How do I repair an installed game that will not launch?

Use Steam’s file-verification command when the title is installed but reports missing or corrupt content. Verification is separate from clearing the download cache and may take several minutes.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Open Library and right-click the affected game.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for Steam to complete the check, then retry the game.

Steam notes that some local configuration files can fail verification normally. A verification result is therefore not a reason to delete the whole installation automatically; first read the message Steam provides and test the game again. Verification may replace or reacquire files that differ from Steam’s expected content, so allow the process to complete and keep the client open until it reports a result.

What should I do if downloads or updates still fail?

Use the remaining steps conditionally, based on the symptom. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance treats them as alternatives, not a mandatory sequence after every cache clear.

Restart Steam and the computer

A complete restart can release a client process or system resource that remained stuck. Close Steam normally, restart the computer, sign in again, and retry the affected task before changing more settings.

Repair the library folder

If the error points to permissions, writing, or a library folder, open Steam > Settings > Storage, locate the affected library, select its … menu, and choose Repair Folder. This addresses a library-location problem; it is not another way to clear the download cache. Use it on the affected library rather than moving files manually while Steam is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try another download region

If the symptoms suggest a content-server or regional connection problem, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region and test a different region. Choose a nearby alternative and retry the download. A region change does not repair corrupt local files, so switch back or use file verification if the error is local to one installation.

Investigate storage errors

Repeated write failures, read errors, or a library that disappears can indicate a drive or filesystem problem. Check that the volume is mounted, has available space, and is not reporting errors in the operating system. Do not assume another cache clear can repair failing hardware. If the drive repeatedly disconnects or reports errors, protect important data and address the storage problem before repeatedly retrying large downloads.

A symptom-based order of operations

A narrow sequence prevents unrelated changes from obscuring the cause:

  1. Write down the title, action that failed, and exact error.
  2. For a download or update-session problem, clear the download cache and sign in again.
  3. Retry once and observe the Downloads page.
  4. For an apparently missing title, inspect Settings > Storage and reconnect or add the existing library.
  5. For missing or corrupt installed content, run Verify integrity of game files.
  6. For a folder or permission message, use Repair Folder.
  7. For a likely content-server issue, test another download region.
  8. For repeated read or write errors, investigate the drive and filesystem.

This order is not a promise that every problem will be solved by one action. It simply matches each Steam control to the symptom it is designed to address.

Is clearing the cache different from uninstalling Steam?

Yes. The cache command is a built-in troubleshooting control; uninstalling Steam is a separate, higher-risk operation that can remove game content. Steam warns that uninstalling the client can delete installed games, so never select an uninstall option when your goal is only to refresh download data.

Reinstalling Steam to the same location is also distinct from clearing its cache. Do not escalate to reinstalling unless the relevant Steam support guidance and your symptom justify it, and make sure you understand which folders the installer will use before proceeding. A reinstall is not a routine follow-up to a cache reset and can introduce avoidable library-recognition work.

Do I need a backup before clearing Steam’s download cache?

No backup is required for the cache-clear procedure itself, and Steam explicitly says currently installed games are unaffected. A backup becomes relevant for a different decision: moving a Steam installation or library to another location.

For a move, Steam highly recommends backing up the steamapps folder first. That backup helps preserve installed game content, but it is not a complete guarantee for every save because some third-party games store saves outside steamapps. Check each game’s own save and cloud-sync behavior when those files matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external SSD can serve as a destination for a backup copy of game files, but Steam cautions against installing Steam and games on external hard drives. Treat the external device as backup storage, not as an endorsement of running the Steam installation from that drive. Do not describe a steamapps copy as something the cache-clear command creates. The two operations have different purposes and different risks.

Which Steam troubleshooting action matches each symptom?

Choose the narrowest operation that fits what you see. This avoids using a cache reset for a file-integrity or library-location problem.

Symptom Use this first What it addresses What it does not promise
Download or update repeatedly stalls or errors without a clear file-corruption message Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache Refreshes locally cached download configuration It is not a guaranteed cure and does not document preservation of unfinished-download progress
Installed game reports missing or corrupt content, or will not launch Library > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files Checks the installed game files It does not clear Steam’s download cache
Game appears uninstalled but its files are still on a drive Review Settings > Storage and add or select the existing library Helps Steam recognize the library location It does not recover files that were actually deleted
Installation or update reports a library-folder or permission problem Settings > Storage > … > Repair Folder Repairs the selected library folder It does not diagnose a failing physical drive
Downloads appear tied to a regional content-server problem Settings > Downloads > Download Region Tests another Steam download region It does not repair local game files

What mistakes should I avoid?

  • Do not confuse cache clearing with uninstalling. The menu command ends at Clear Download Cache; uninstalling Steam is a separate action with different consequences.
  • Do not promise that every partial download is preserved. Steam documents installed-game preservation, not exact temporary-download behavior.
  • Do not delete a library folder to fix a missing-game listing. First make Steam recognize the existing location through Settings > Storage.
  • Do not verify files as a substitute for a download-cache reset. Verification is for an installed title with missing or corrupt content.
  • Do not change several variables at once. Clear the cache, sign in, and observe the result before changing region or repairing a folder unless the error already points there.
  • Do not treat a cache reset as a backup. Copying steamapps is a separate preparation step for moving an installation.
  • Do not assume an Install button means deletion. Check the library location and connected drive before downloading duplicate files.
  • Do not keep retrying against a failing drive. Repeated read or write errors need storage troubleshooting, not more cache resets.

How often should I clear Steam’s download cache?

Steam presents cache clearing as a troubleshooting step for specific download, update, or related startup problems, not as a routine maintenance schedule. Run it when the symptom justifies it, then use the resulting error message to choose the next targeted action. Repeated resets without checking the library, files, region, or drive can delay the actual fix.

Does clearing the cache affect purchases or account ownership?

The cache-clear control does not cancel purchases or remove games from your Steam account. Because Steam requires a fresh sign-in afterward, have the account credentials or sign-in method you normally use available. Once authenticated, your Library is the place to confirm account-owned titles and the local installation state separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Use Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, confirm, and sign in again. Steam says currently installed games remain unaffected. If the problem persists, match the next step to the symptom: recognize the existing library in Storage, verify installed files, repair a library folder, test another download region, or investigate the drive. Cache clearing is safe within that documented boundary, but it is not a backup, an uninstall, or a guaranteed repair for every failed download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can clearing Steam’s download cache remove my game saves?

Steam’s documented statement is that currently installed games are unaffected; it does not describe the location or backup status of every game’s save data. Save handling varies by game, so use the game’s own save and cloud-sync documentation when a save backup is important.

Does clearing the cache make Steam downloads faster?

It can resolve a stale or damaged download-session configuration, but Steam does not promise a speed increase. If the connection or content server is the limiting factor, restarting the client, checking the drive, or testing another download region may be more relevant.

Do I have to buy or install another program to clear the cache?

No. The control is built into the desktop Steam client under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Third-party cleaners are unnecessary for this procedure and can introduce separate risks.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if Steam asks me to install a game that is already on my drive?

Do not immediately start a second installation. Open Steam > Settings > Storage, add or select the library that contains the existing files, and let Steam attempt to recognize them before downloading anything new.

Will I need to sign in again after clearing the cache?

Yes. Steam states that you will need to log into Steam afterward. This sign-in requirement does not mean the installed game files were removed.

Should I clear the cache before verifying game files?

Use the control that matches the symptom. Clear the download cache for download or update-session trouble; use Library > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files when an installed title reports missing or corrupt content.

Is clearing the cache the same as uninstalling Steam?

No. Clearing the cache is a built-in troubleshooting action. Steam warns that uninstalling the client can delete game content, so do not choose an uninstall option when you only want to refresh download data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to back up steamapps before clearing the cache?

No backup is required for the cache-clear procedure. Steam recommends backing up the steamapps folder for a separate move of a Steam installation, and some third-party saves may be stored elsewhere.

What if changing the download region does not help?

A region change only tests a different content-server route. If the error is local to one installed game, verify its files; if the message concerns a library folder, use Storage’s Repair Folder option; repeated read or write errors warrant drive investigation.

The Bottom Line

Clear the cache, not the library: Steam’s built-in command refreshes download configuration and leaves currently installed games intact, but it signs you out. Sign back in, then use Storage, file verification, folder repair, region changes, or drive checks only when the remaining symptom calls for them.
