Claude is a strong fit when you want browser interaction through a developer-controlled environment or a Chrome agent that can use existing logins. ChatGPT suits teams that prefer a hosted virtual-browser workflow, while Gemini is a programmable screenshot-and-action tool for teams prepared to run their own executor. There is no proven universal winner: the products differ in how they run the browser, handle confirmation, and support different environments, and published benchmark scores do not provide a like-for-like cross-provider ranking.

What should you compare when choosing an AI assistant for browser automation?

Compare more than whether an assistant can click a button. The practical choice depends on who runs the browser, how credentials and sessions are handled, what happens before consequential actions, and whether the agent works reliably on the particular sites and tasks you need.

“Browser automation” here covers two different arrangements. A hosted assistant may provide a virtual browser that you direct through a consumer interface. A developer tool may instead return actions that your application executes in a browser or other computer environment. They can look similar from the outside, but they put different responsibilities on the user or engineering team.

  • Execution ownership: Is the browser hosted for you, or must your application create and operate it?
  • Authentication: Can the workflow use existing signed-in sessions, and who controls credentials and session data?
  • Safety controls: Can the system pause for your approval, require confirmation, or block an action?
  • Task fit: Does it cover the environment and sites involved—browser only, or also mobile and desktop?
  • Operational effort: Who must build the executor, validate actions, manage logs, and handle delays or page changes?
  • Evidence of reliability: Are reported scores from tasks and environments that resemble your own work?

The product names alone do not answer all these questions. Claude has both a developer-facing browser-use tool and a consumer Chrome agent; OpenAI has both hosted ChatGPT workflows and published research on its computer-using agent; Gemini’s Computer Use tool is an API building block whose client executes the returned actions.

How do Claude’s browser automation options work?

Claude offers two distinct approaches: a browser-use tool for applications that supply and operate the browser, and Claude in Chrome for end users. Choose between them based on who should own the browser environment and how much implementation control you need.

Claude browser-use tool for developers

Anthropic describes its browser-use tool as letting Claude “navigate, read, and interact with webpages in your own browser environment.” The application supplies the browser and executes the interaction; Claude can work with page structure, screenshots, and references to elements in the accessibility tree, as well as coordinates.

This division gives a development team control over the environment, credentials, logging, and action validation. It also means the team—not a turnkey service—must build and maintain the executor. That work includes deciding how to handle delays, pages that update dynamically, failed or ambiguous actions, and untrusted instructions visible in webpage content. A tool that can return an interaction does not guarantee that your application has safely or successfully completed it.

This option is most attractive when browser-native interaction and control over the execution layer matter more than having a ready-made consumer workflow. It requires engineering effort and a plan for observing and validating actions.

Claude in Chrome for end users

Anthropic announced on August 26, 2026, that Claude in Chrome was generally available on paid Claude plans. The announcement says it can work across tabs, use existing logins, and take autonomous actions after a safety classifier validates each action.

That makes it a different proposition from the developer tool: the user gets a Chrome-oriented agent rather than having to build a browser executor. Availability and behavior can change with plan and rollout updates, so check the current offer for your account before relying on it. Existing login access is useful, but it also makes careful review important when the agent can operate within signed-in sites.

What does ChatGPT offer for browser automation?

ChatGPT agent and cloud browser provide hosted virtual-browser workflows in which the assistant interacts through screenshots. They are the clearest fit when you prefer a hosted workflow over implementing a browser executor yourself.

ChatGPT agent and cloud browser

ChatGPT agent uses screenshots of a virtual browser to navigate, click, and fill forms. User takeover is available for sensitive steps, allowing the person using the workflow to resume control rather than leaving every consequential interaction to automation.

OpenAI also describes cloud browser support for supported public and signed-in websites. Availability depends on paid plans, region, and workspace rollout; “supported websites” is not a promise that every site or every interaction will work. Confirm availability in the actual account and workspace you plan to use.

The hosted arrangement reduces the need for a team to build the underlying browser executor, but does not eliminate the need to define what the assistant may do, review sensitive actions, and test the workflow on target sites. Screenshot-based interaction also makes it important to check the result in context: an apparent click is not proof that a page accepted the intended input.

What OpenAI’s CUA benchmark results do—and do not—show

OpenAI reported the following results for its Computer-Using Agent (CUA) research in 2025:

Benchmark OpenAI CUA result What to keep in mind
WebArena 58.1% success OpenAI-reported result, 2025; benchmark tasks, not a guarantee for an individual website or workflow.
WebVoyager 87.0% success OpenAI-reported result, 2025; a different benchmark from WebArena, so the percentages are not directly interchangeable.
OSWorld 38.1% success OpenAI-reported result, 2025; OpenAI notes that this remains substantially below human performance.

These figures are useful reference points for OpenAI’s published CUA research, not a direct comparison of current hosted assistants against Claude and Gemini under identical conditions. They also show why a high score on one test should not be read as “automation is solved”: performance varies by benchmark, and the OSWorld result is far from human-level performance.

How does Gemini Computer Use work?

Gemini Computer Use is an API building block, not a turnkey hosted browser service. Your code sends the model a task and screenshot, receives a UI action, executes it in the environment, captures the next screenshot, and repeats the loop.

Google documents support for browser, mobile, and desktop environments. That breadth can suit teams building automation across more than web pages, but it also means the team is responsible for the execution cycle and the environment in which actions run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Provide the current state: Give the model a screenshot and the task context needed for its next decision.
  2. Receive an action: The model returns a function call, such as a click, scroll, or keystroke.
  3. Apply controls: Your client evaluates the action and any safety decision before execution. Google exposes decisions that can allow an action, require confirmation, or block it.
  4. Execute in your environment: Your code carries out the action in the browser, mobile, or desktop environment you operate.
  5. Continue with a fresh screenshot: Capture the resulting state and send it back for the next model turn.

Google documents optional prompt-injection detection that scans screenshots. It also recommends a secure execution environment. These features provide control points; they do not remove the need to treat page content as untrusted or to design careful rules around high-impact actions.

Google Cloud lists Gemini 4 Argon and multiple Gemini 3.x models as supporting computer use in its managed agent platform. Model availability can change, so verify the current model and platform support when designing an implementation rather than assuming every listed model remains available in a particular region or environment.

Which assistant is best for your browser automation use case?

There is no reliable all-purpose ranking from the available benchmark evidence. A better choice follows from your preferred execution model, the sites and environments you need to automate, and the safeguards your workflow requires.

Choose When it is a good fit Main responsibility or limitation
Claude browser-use tool You want browser interaction inside an environment your application controls. Your team supplies and operates the browser, manages validation and logging, and handles dynamic-page behavior and latency.
Claude in Chrome You want a consumer Chrome agent that can work across tabs and use existing logins. It is generally available on paid Claude plans according to Anthropic’s August 26, 2026 announcement; check current plan and rollout availability.
ChatGPT agent or cloud browser You prefer a hosted virtual browser with screenshot interaction and user takeover for sensitive steps. Availability depends on plan, region, workspace rollout, and supported-site coverage.
Gemini Computer Use You want to build a screenshot/action loop for browser, mobile, or desktop environments. Your client must execute actions, capture subsequent screenshots, and handle safety decisions in a secure environment.

Choose for control over the executor

If credentials, environment configuration, action review, and logs need to stay under your application’s control, Claude’s browser-use tool or Gemini’s client-driven loop are the more directly configurable patterns described here. That flexibility comes with implementation work: you own the executor and must decide what to log, when to reject an action, and how to recover from a state that differs from what the model expected.

Choose for a hosted workflow

If avoiding an in-house browser executor is the priority, ChatGPT agent or cloud browser is a natural place to evaluate first. Claude in Chrome is another consumer-oriented option when using Chrome and existing logins is important. In either case, check actual account availability and the supported workflow before making the tool a dependency.

Choose for multiple device types

If your automation needs to span browser, mobile, and desktop interfaces, Google documents Gemini Computer Use for all three. That does not mean a single setup will work identically across them: the client still needs to operate each environment and provide the next screenshot.

Can benchmark scores tell you which one is more reliable?

Not by themselves. The reported figures come from different task sets and evaluation conditions, and no single cross-provider benchmark with identical model versions, prompts, environments, and scoring establishes a winner across Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini.

A COLM 2025 study reported 56.3% task success for Claude Computer Use 3.7 and 61.3% for OpenAI Operator on its task set. Those figures should be read as results for the specific systems and evaluation in that study, not as a general head-to-head verdict on every current assistant. They also cannot be casually combined with OpenAI’s own 2025 WebArena, WebVoyager, or OSWorld figures: the benchmark, model version, task mix, and evaluation method differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a real decision, use published benchmarks as context, then assess a representative set of your own tasks. A useful evaluation should include ordinary completion, a page that changes after loading, a task that requires an existing signed-in session if relevant, and a case where the correct behavior is to stop and ask rather than continue. Record whether the intended outcome occurred—not merely whether the agent issued the expected click.

  • Use the same task instructions and starting conditions for each candidate.
  • Track completed tasks, incorrect actions, recoveries, and cases that appropriately stop for confirmation.
  • Test the exact sites and task families you expect to use; benchmark success does not establish performance on a particular site.
  • Repeat tasks enough to distinguish a consistent workflow from a one-off success.

What safety controls matter when an assistant can use a browser?

Browser agents encounter content they do not control, including page text that may try to redirect the assistant or request actions outside the task. Treat webpage content as untrusted input, and require a human checkpoint for actions with meaningful or irreversible consequences.

Keep consequential decisions reviewable

OpenAI describes user takeover for sensitive steps in ChatGPT agent. Gemini exposes safety decisions that may allow, require confirmation, or block an action. Anthropic says Claude in Chrome validates each autonomous action with a safety classifier. These are different control designs, not interchangeable guarantees; determine how the specific workflow behaves before trusting it with consequential activity.

For a custom executor, place your own validation between the model’s proposed action and the browser’s execution. For hosted workflows, use available takeover or confirmation controls and review the result of sensitive operations. In either case, define in advance which actions the automation may perform independently and which require a person.

Limit the blast radius

Use an execution environment appropriate to the task, particularly when building a client-driven agent. Google specifically recommends a secure execution environment for Computer Use. Keep access limited to what the workflow needs, and make the system’s logs and recovery process part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Do not infer that a safety classifier, screenshot scan, or confirmation prompt guarantees that every harmful action will be detected. Safety mechanisms are useful layers, but the application or user still needs to decide what is acceptable, inspect important outcomes, and intervene when the observed page state does not match the intended result.

How should you pilot an assistant before relying on it?

Start with a narrow, reversible workflow and define a successful outcome in observable terms. A pilot reveals whether the execution model, safeguards, and actual site behavior fit your use case better than a headline score can.

  1. Choose one task family: Keep the scope specific enough that you can compare attempts consistently.
  2. Define the end state: Specify what must be true in the site or record after the task, and what should happen if the agent cannot verify it.
  3. Set action boundaries: Decide which steps can proceed automatically and which must pause for human review, especially where an action is difficult to reverse.
  4. Run on representative pages: Include normal pages, dynamic updates, and sign-in conditions that reflect the real workflow.
  5. Record failures as well as completions: Note incorrect actions, unexpected prompts, timeouts, and cases where the system appropriately stopped.
  6. Review fit, not just success rate: Compare reliability alongside implementation effort, credential handling, observability, and the cost of recovering from a mistake.

This process also helps separate product limitations from integration problems. With a hosted agent, investigate whether the account, region, workspace, or site is supported. With an API tool, inspect the executor and screenshot loop, since the application is responsible for carrying out actions and returning the updated state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can browser agents reliably complete a task if a website changes its layout?

The available product descriptions and benchmark figures do not establish consistent performance on arbitrary layout changes. Test the specific pages you depend on, and make the workflow stop or request help when it cannot verify that the page is in the expected state.

Can I use browser automation for payments, purchases, or account changes?

The documented takeover, confirmation, and safety-decision features provide ways to keep a person involved, but they do not establish that any provider guarantees safe completion of these transactions. Keep consequential actions behind an explicit review step and verify the final state yourself.

Does a high benchmark score mean an assistant will work well on my company’s website?

No. A benchmark measures performance on its own task set and conditions; it does not certify performance on a particular site, account setup, or workflow. Run a controlled pilot with the pages and task outcomes your team actually needs.
