Claude Haiku 5.5 may consume up to three times as many tokens as ChatGPT 6 Luna in some workloads, but that is not a universal ratio. The three-times figure comes from secondary reporting, not a published head-to-head benchmark from either model maker. A separate 2026 cost analysis estimates that recent Claude models use about 30% more tokens than comparable GPT models for the same text. Because both models are listed at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for short prompts, token count—not the headline rate alone—can determine your bill. Long-context price tiers, caching, retries and answer length can change the result substantially.
What does the “three times more tokens” claim actually say?
The claim is an upper-end observation tied to particular workloads. A 2026 report from Geeky Gadgets describes Claude Haiku 5.5 as having “high token consumption, up to three times more than GPT6 Luna in some cases.” It does not establish that every prompt, response or API call uses three times as many tokens.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters because token use depends on the exact text, language, tokenizer, requested output length, hidden reasoning, tool calls and retries. Two calls that appear identical in a user interface can be billed differently if one model emits a longer answer or repeats a failed tool request. The available evidence therefore supports this narrower conclusion:
- Haiku 5.5 can reach roughly a 3× token count in some reported workloads.
- A separate Minnow analysis says recent Claude models produce about 30% more tokens for the same text.
- No primary Anthropic or OpenAI benchmark in the available material reproduces a universal 3× result for this exact pair.
Use “up to three times in some cases” as a warning to measure your own workload, not as a conversion factor for forecasting every request.

Why can two models count the same text differently?
Tokenizers break text into model-specific pieces rather than counting words. A common English word may be one token for one model and several pieces for another; code, URLs, emoji, non-Latin scripts and unusual punctuation can widen the gap. An updated tokenizer can change the count even when the visible prompt is unchanged.
One October 2026 excerpt attributed to Devoured says Haiku 5.5 has an updated tokenizer that “uses slightly more tokens per task.” The excerpt does not provide a stable primary source or a reproducible test, so treat it as context rather than a benchmark. Minnow’s independently published estimate is broader: recent Claude models produce about 30% more tokens for equivalent text.

Token count also includes generated output. If Haiku writes a 1,500-token explanation where Luna writes 900 tokens, the extra 600 tokens affect cost even if both received the same 10,000-token prompt. Internal reasoning, structured tool messages and retry traffic may be included in provider billing or metering, depending on the API product. Check the usage fields returned by your endpoint instead of inferring consumption from character count.
How do Haiku 5.5 and ChatGPT 6 Luna pricing compare?
For short prompts, the cited 2026 comparison lists both models at the same headline rates: $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. Cached input is listed at $0.01 per million tokens for both. Equal rates do not mean equal bills when one model tokenizes the same material into more tokens.

| Model | Standard input | Standard output | Cached input | Higher tier trigger | Higher-tier rates |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 per million tokens | $0.50 per million tokens | $0.01 per million tokens | Above 100,000 input tokens | $0.50 per million input; $2.50 per million output |
| ChatGPT 6 Luna (GPT-6 Luna) | $0.10 per million tokens | $0.50 per million tokens | $0.01 per million tokens | Above 272,000 input tokens | $0.20 per million input; $0.75 per million output |
The thresholds are especially important for long prompts. Haiku’s reported higher tier starts once input exceeds 100,000 tokens, while Luna’s standard rates reportedly continue to 272,000 input tokens. The provider’s exact billing rule—whether the higher rate applies to the entire request or only tokens beyond the threshold—must be confirmed in the current price sheet before you model a production bill. The table reflects the published comparison, not a guarantee that rates will remain unchanged.
What does tokenization do to an equal-rate request?
Suppose the visible prompt is the same but Haiku encodes it into 30% more input tokens. At identical per-token prices, Haiku’s input charge is also about 30% higher before caching, output differences or tier changes. If Haiku additionally produces a longer answer, the output charge rises separately. Conversely, a cache hit can make repeated context inexpensive enough to outweigh a moderate token-count difference.
What did the 100-round cost estimate find?
Minnow modeled 100 rounds in which each round contained 40,000 prompt tokens: 36,000 cached tokens and 4,000 new tokens, plus 1,000 output tokens. Under those assumptions it estimated a total of $0.14 for Haiku 5.5 and $0.13 for GPT-6 Luna.
This example is not a universal price comparison. It assumes a particular cache ratio, output size and rate card, and it does not prove that the models generate the same quality, latency or number of retries. Its practical lesson is that a small per-round difference can remain small when most context is cached, while a workload with uncached, tokenizer-heavy text can show a larger gap.

Do context-window sizes explain the token difference?
No. Context capacity is a maximum the model can accept, not a prediction of how many tokens a task will consume. SceneOS reports a 1,050,000-token context window and a 128,000-token maximum output for Luna. A separate token-counter reference lists Haiku 5.5 at approximately 1,000,000 context tokens and Luna at 1,050,000, while warning that each tokenizer counts the same text differently.
A large window lets you submit more material; it does not force the model to read, reason over or reproduce all of it. A model may stop early, summarize aggressively, generate a longer chain of reasoning, call a tool, retry a request or truncate output. SceneOS’s measured-call table records identical typical and long-call token sizes for Haiku 5.5 and Luna in its own workload, which is direct evidence that model names alone cannot predict a 3× result.

Use one fixed prompt set, the same application code and the same success criteria. A token comparison that measures only the visible answer can miss cache discounts, failed calls and latency costs.
- Freeze the test set. Include short prompts, long documents, code, structured JSON, multilingual text and prompts that exceed 100,000 input tokens. Keep variables such as temperature, tool definitions and requested output format identical where the APIs support equivalent settings.
- Tokenize with each provider’s counting method. Record uncached input tokens and cached input tokens separately. Do not convert one model’s count into the other model’s count with a word-based multiplier.
- Capture every usage field. Log input, cached input, output, reasoning or hidden-token fields when exposed, tool-call tokens, retries, failed requests and the final billed amount.
- Measure operational performance. Record time to first token, total latency, timeout rate and the number of concurrent requests your deployment can sustain.
- Score task success. Use a rubric appropriate to the job: exact-match tests for extraction, unit tests for code, factual checks for summaries and human review for tone or policy-sensitive work. A cheaper but less accurate answer may cost more after correction.
- Report distributions, not one average. Publish the median and high percentiles for token use, cost and latency. A few 3× outliers can disappear in an average while still affecting your worst-case budget.
- Recheck prices and model versions. Record the date, endpoint, model identifier and price sheet used. Tokenizers, caching rules and long-context tiers can change without changing your prompt.
When can a token-efficient model lower your API bill?
Token efficiency lowers cost only when the reduction survives the rest of the workflow. A simple estimate is:

total cost = (uncached input tokens × input rate) + (cached input tokens × cache rate) + (output tokens × output rate) + retry and tool-call charges
That formula highlights four common outcomes:
- Same quality, fewer tokens: the more compact model is usually cheaper at equal rates.
- More tokens but fewer retries: a model that solves the task correctly on the first attempt can be cheaper overall than a shorter but error-prone answer.
- Long prompts: crossing Haiku’s reported 100,000-token tier can raise both input and output rates, making model choice more consequential.
- Heavy caching: repeated instructions or documents may be charged at the much lower cached-input rate, reducing the impact of raw tokenization differences.
For budgeting, calculate a low, median and high scenario using your measured token distributions. Keep a separate allowance for retries and tool calls instead of hiding them inside an average output length.
Which model fits a token-heavy workflow?
There is no evidence here for a blanket quality winner. Choose according to the workload characteristics you can measure.
| Workload condition | What to examine first | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Short prompts under 100,000 input tokens | Output length, success rate and latency | Published standard rates are equal, so behavior and reliability drive total cost. |
| Prompts near or above 100,000 tokens | Applied tier rule and uncached token count | Haiku’s reported higher tier begins earlier than Luna’s. |
| Repeated large context | Cache hit rate and cache invalidation | A high cache ratio can dominate the bill. |
| Code or tool-using agents | Retries, tool messages and successful completion | Visible answer length understates the real request cost. |
| Multilingual or symbol-heavy text | Per-model tokenizer counts | Tokenization differences can exceed an English-word estimate. |
If your workload is sensitive to worst-case spend, run a canary with production-shaped prompts before switching models. Keep an automatic budget limit and a fallback path for requests that exceed your token or latency ceiling.

What are the most common mistakes in interpreting the 3× figure?
- Treating “up to” as an average. The claim describes an upper-end case, not the expected ratio.
- Comparing words instead of tokens. Word counts hide tokenizer differences, especially in code, URLs and non-English text.
- Ignoring output tokens. A longer answer can erase savings from a compact prompt.
- Mixing cached and uncached traffic. Cache discounts can make two requests with identical visible context cost very differently.
- Crossing a tier boundary unnoticed. A request just over a published threshold may be billed under a different rate schedule.
- Using context-window size as a usage forecast. Capacity says how much a request can contain, not how much a model will generate or consume.
- Comparing different tasks. A summary, coding repair and agent loop have different token and retry profiles.
- Ignoring version drift. A tokenizer or price update can invalidate an old spreadsheet while the model’s marketing name remains similar.
What is the defensible bottom line for buyers and developers?
Claude Haiku 5.5 can use substantially more tokens than ChatGPT 6 Luna in particular workloads, with one report citing an upper bound of about three times and another estimating roughly 30% more tokens for equivalent text across recent Claude models. Those figures are useful risk signals, not universal conversion rates. The published short-prompt prices are equal, but Haiku’s reported long-context tier starts at 100,000 input tokens versus 272,000 for Luna, so uncached long prompts may produce a larger bill. The only reliable way to choose is to measure both models on the same prompts, including token counts, cache hits, retries, latency, task success and billed dollars.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do cached tokens still count against a model’s context window?
Yes. Caching changes how repeated input is billed and sometimes how it is transmitted, but cached material still occupies context capacity when it is part of the request. A cache hit therefore lowers price without making an oversized prompt fit inside a smaller context window.

How should I budget for a model whose tokenizer may change?
Keep a percentage reserve above your measured median and alert on sudden changes in input-token distributions. Store the model identifier, tokenizer or API version and measurement date with each cost record so a later update can be distinguished from a workload change.
Can a shorter answer be worse for total cost?
Yes. If a concise response omits required fields and triggers a human correction, a second model call or a retry, the combined spend can exceed that of a longer first-pass answer. Evaluate completed-task cost, not output length alone.
Should I test prompts in languages other than English?
If users submit those languages, absolutely. Tokenization varies by language and script, so an English-only benchmark can understate both input and output costs for the traffic your application actually serves.
