Claude Code is usually the better first choice for terminal-first, repository-scale work; VS Code’s AI tools are usually better for editor-centered coding, where inline suggestions, visual diffs, debugging and a shared workspace reduce context switching. The choice is not exclusive: Claude can run inside VS Code, and many developers use an editor assistant for small edits while delegating larger jobs to Claude Code.
The practical difference is workflow rather than a universal model-quality ranking. Claude Code is built to inspect a repository, edit multiple files, execute shell commands and tests, and work with Git and MCP integrations. VS Code combines chat, inline editing, agent tasks, model selection, terminal output, tests and the debugger in one window. Your repository, task shape, review habits, permissions and subscription determine which feels better.

What is the difference between Claude Code and VS Code AI extensions?
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that runs in a terminal or supported IDE. You describe an outcome, and it can investigate the repository, plan changes, write files, run commands and tests, and prepare Git work such as a pull request. Anthropic describes it as suitable for both routine fixes and long-running refactors or new features.
VS Code’s AI workflow is a set of editor-native surfaces rather than one single extension. You can use chat for questions, inline chat for a selected region, inline suggestions while typing, or an agent for a task that spans files and tools. Microsoft’s current workflow also includes model selection, bring-your-own-key (BYOK) options, local models, MCP servers, skills and plugins.

In short, Claude Code starts with the repository and command line; VS Code starts with the file, editor and workspace. Both can perform multi-file work, but they expose it differently.
How does a Claude Code workflow work?
A Claude Code session is organized around a goal and the tools needed to complete it. Claude can search the repository, inspect configuration and Git history, make coordinated edits, run the project’s commands and report what changed. It asks for permission before operations that require approval, so you can keep a human checkpoint around file edits, shell commands or other actions.
Repository-scale investigation
For a migration, cross-cutting bug or unfamiliar codebase, you can state the desired result instead of manually locating every file. Claude Code can follow imports and references, inspect tests and configuration, and build a plan before changing anything. This is useful when the work is too broad for a single editor selection.
Command-line and Git work
Because it lives in a terminal, Claude Code can use the same command-line tools you already use: Git, package managers, test runners, linters and deployment scripts. Anthropic specifically describes workflows that include planning, coding, testing and opening pull requests. The terminal context also makes it natural to run a sequence of checks after a multi-file edit.
MCP and other developer tools
Claude Code can connect to Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, allowing an approved session to use compatible documentation, issue-tracking or internal tools. The exact tools available depend on how your environment is configured and what permissions you grant.
How does the VS Code AI workflow work?
VS Code keeps the AI interaction beside the code you are editing. Its chat and inline features are useful when you already know the file or region that needs attention; its agent mode is designed for a task that spans files and tools. The agent can find relevant code, make changes, run checks and leave the results in the same workspace as your editor, terminal, tests and debugger.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Focused edits and inline suggestions
Inline suggestions help while you type, while inline chat can explain or rewrite a selected block without opening a separate tool. This is often faster than starting a full repository investigation for a small function, test or documentation change.
Workspace agents
For broader tasks, a VS Code agent can search the workspace, edit multiple files and run checks. You can keep the resulting diff visible, move directly to a failing test, and use the debugger without switching applications. The editor-centered loop is especially valuable when visual navigation or immediate inspection matters.
Model, provider and extension choices
VS Code’s documented AI workflow supports model selection, BYOK and local models, along with MCP servers, skills and plugins. Third-party-agent support lets a provider use its own SDK and agent harness while the conversation remains in VS Code’s chat interface. That means the interface and the underlying model or agent provider are separate decisions.
Can I use Claude inside VS Code?
Yes. Claude can be used in VS Code through a native extension, and Microsoft also documents a third-party-agent route. You can therefore keep Anthropic’s agent behavior while reviewing context and diffs in the editor instead of working only in a standalone terminal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Marketplace listing for the Claude extension states that it can explore a codebase, read and write code, run Terminal commands with permission, use current-file or text-selection context, and provide subagents, custom slash commands and MCP support. The listing showed version 2.1.310, updated 2026-10-23, with a minimum VS Code version of 1.98.0. Extension availability and version requirements can change, so check the listing when installing.
Which workflow is better for different coding tasks?
Neither workflow wins every task. Match the tool to the amount of repository exploration, command execution and visual review the job requires.

| Task or situation | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rename an API across many packages and update tests | Claude Code | It can investigate references, coordinate edits and run the full test sequence from the terminal. |
| Understand an unfamiliar service before changing it | Claude Code in Plan mode, or Claude Code with approval prompts | A repository-wide plan can expose dependencies before edits begin. |
| Complete a small function while you type | VS Code inline suggestions or inline chat | The suggestion appears at the cursor with minimal context switching. |
| Debug a failing test while inspecting variables | VS Code | The editor, test results, terminal output and debugger share one workspace. |
| Apply a migration that requires scripts, generated files and checks | Claude Code | Terminal commands, Git and long-running multi-file work are first-class parts of the flow. |
| Review a proposed change line by line | VS Code | Inline decorations and visual diffs make local review immediate. |
| Use internal documentation or a custom tool through MCP | Either | Both workflows document MCP support; the deciding factor is where you want the session and approvals. |
| Work offline with a local model | VS Code, if your chosen extension supports it | VS Code documents local-model options; Claude Code access depends on the account and model path you use. |
Is Claude Code better for large refactors?
It is often a better fit for large refactors because it can keep a repository-level objective in view while inspecting many files, running commands and executing tests. Anthropic explicitly positions Claude Code for long-running refactors and new features, not only quick bug fixes.
That does not make a refactor safe by default. Large changes still require a bounded plan, incremental commits, tests that cover the affected behavior and a human review of the final diff. A VS Code agent can also perform a multi-file refactor; its advantage is that the plan, changes, diagnostics and diff remain visible in the editor.

- The change crosses packages, services or generated code.
- You need to inspect Git history or run several shell commands as part of the investigation.
- The work includes a migration script, test updates and repeated verification.
- You want an asynchronous, terminal-centered task that can continue while you perform other work.
When VS Code may be safer or faster
- The change is confined to a known file or selection.
- You need to watch types, diagnostics, breakpoints or test failures while editing.
- Visual layout, markup or generated diffs are central to the review.
- You prefer to approve changes from the editor as they are proposed.
How do autonomy and approval controls compare?
Both products let you control how much the agent can do without asking. Claude Code uses permission prompts around actions. VS Code’s documented Claude sessions expose three modes: Plan, Request approval and Edit automatically.
| Mode or control | What it means | Good use |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code permission prompts | The session asks before operations that need authorization. | Repository work where you want command and edit checkpoints. |
| Plan | The agent analyzes and proposes an approach before making edits. | Unfamiliar areas or risky architectural changes. |
| Request approval | The agent can prepare actions but asks before applying them. | Changes that need review at each meaningful step. |
| Edit automatically | The agent applies edits without a prompt for every change. | Contained work where you will inspect the final diff. |
Use the most restrictive setting that still keeps the task practical. Never treat an approved command as proof that its result is correct: inspect generated files, review the diff and run tests independently.
Which tool gives better code review and diff visibility?
VS Code has the stronger immediate visual-review loop. Edits appear in the editor, diagnostics can update beside them, and the integrated source-control view lets you inspect changed lines while the terminal and tests remain nearby.
Claude Code’s terminal output is more compact and easier to combine with Git commands, scripts and automated checks. You can review a patch with your normal Git tools and ask Claude to explain or adjust a change. If your review process depends on side-by-side visual context, keep Claude inside VS Code or open the resulting diff there.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do command-line tools, MCP and integrations differ?
Claude Code is naturally suited to command-line-heavy environments. Git operations, package managers, test runners, linters and custom scripts are part of the same session. MCP servers extend that session to approved external tools.
VS Code brings the terminal into the editor and also documents MCP, skills and plugins. This gives you a similar integration surface without leaving the workspace. The practical difference is where the orchestration happens: Claude Code begins with a terminal agent, while VS Code coordinates editor features, chat and agents around the open workspace.
What setup do you need?
Starting with Claude Code in a terminal
- Install Claude Code using Anthropic’s current installation method for your operating system.
- Sign in with an eligible Claude account or configure an Anthropic Console account, depending on the access path your organization uses.
- Open the repository directory in a terminal and start a session.
- Describe the outcome, constraints and verification commands; ask for a plan first when the area is unfamiliar.
- Approve only the file edits and commands you understand, then inspect the diff and test results.
The exact installation command and supported platforms can change, so use the current Anthropic documentation rather than copying an old command from a blog post.
Starting with AI in VS Code
- Install the current VS Code release and the AI extension or provider agent you intend to use.
- Sign in to the required provider, configure BYOK or select a supported local model if that is your plan.
- Open the repository as a workspace so the agent can use the intended files, tests and terminal.
- Choose chat, inline chat, inline suggestions or agent mode according to the task size.
- Select Plan, Request approval or Edit automatically for Claude sessions, then review the resulting diff and checks.
The Claude Marketplace listing required VS Code 1.98.0 or newer at the time it showed version 2.1.310. Verify the current minimum before upgrading an older installation.

There is no single comparable total price. The amount you pay depends on the account, model usage, subscription and limits attached to your organization.
| Item | What is established | What can vary |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code editor | VS Code is free for private and commercial use. | AI features, provider subscriptions, model charges and organizational policies. |
| Copilot Free | Microsoft’s FAQ describes a monthly allowance of inline suggestions and AI credits. | Allowance size, eligibility and paid-plan limits can change. |
| Claude Code | Access is available through Claude Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Anthropic Console accounts. | Usage limits and API charges depend on the selected account path and model use. |
| Claude extension in VS Code | The listing says it uses current Claude models through Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or pay-as-you-go pricing. | Entitlements, rate limits and model availability vary by plan and date. |
Compare your expected usage rather than just the subscription label. A developer who makes many short inline requests may hit a different limit from one who runs occasional, long repository tasks. The official sources do not publish one universal cost or a controlled performance comparison for the two workflows.

Do you need GitHub Copilot if you use Claude Code?
No. Claude Code can handle repository exploration, edits, commands and tests without Copilot. You might still choose Copilot or another VS Code assistant for inline completion, quick transformations and editor-native suggestions while reserving Claude Code for larger delegated tasks.
Using both is a workflow decision, not a claim that one produces universally better code. Keep their roles distinct, monitor overlapping subscriptions and ensure your organization’s policies permit the models and extensions you enable.

What are the common failure modes?
The agent changes too much
Switch to Plan or a request-approval mode, narrow the task boundary, and ask for a file list before edits. Review the diff in small commits instead of accepting a large unexamined patch.
Tests pass but behavior is wrong
Passing checks only show that the executed checks passed. Add or update tests for the intended behavior, inspect generated files and perform a manual scenario test where the change affects users or data.
The agent cannot find the relevant code
Confirm that the correct repository and workspace are open, then provide domain terms, entry points, configuration names or a failing test. In a monorepo, state which package or service is in scope.
Commands fail because the environment differs
Tell the agent the required runtime, package manager, environment variables and test command. Do not paste secrets into prompts; configure credentials through the normal local or CI mechanism.
Usage limits interrupt a long task
Break the work into documented stages, preserve the plan and commit checkpoints, and resume with a concise status summary. Check the current plan limits before relying on an unattended or asynchronous workflow.
How should you choose?
Use this decision sequence before installing another tool:
- If the work is primarily typing, explaining a selection or making a small edit, start with VS Code inline features.
- If it spans files and tools but needs constant visual debugging, use a VS Code agent in the integrated workspace.
- If it requires repository archaeology, shell commands, migrations, Git history or long-running tests, start with Claude Code.
- If you want Anthropic’s agent with editor-based review, run Claude inside VS Code and select the appropriate permission mode.
- If you need both fast suggestions and delegated repository work, use the two workflows together and review every final diff.
There is no published head-to-head benchmark or universal accuracy ranking. Results depend on the selected model, plan, repository, prompt quality, permissions and review practice. Treat workflow fit and safe verification as the deciding criteria.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Claude Code work without opening VS Code?
Yes. Claude Code is designed to run in a terminal, so a repository can be analyzed, edited and tested from a shell-based environment. You only need an editor later if you prefer a graphical diff or debugger for review.
Does VS Code AI work with private repositories?
The tools operate on the workspace you open, but whether source code is sent to a provider depends on the extension, model route, account settings and your organization’s policy. Review data-retention and telemetry settings before enabling an external model on proprietary code.
Which option is better for pair programming over SSH?
A terminal-based Claude Code session can fit naturally into an SSH workflow because it uses the remote shell and repository directly. VS Code Remote Development can also provide an editor-centered experience, but it adds the setup and connectivity requirements of the remote extension stack.
Can I change the AI model during a VS Code session?
VS Code documents model selection, and the available choices depend on the installed provider integrations, account entitlements and configured keys. Changing models can alter context limits, tool support and usage costs, so recheck the session’s permissions after switching.
