Claude API costs depend on the model, the number of input and output tokens, and any features or deployment options that change their rates. Anthropic quotes prices per million tokens (MTok), and its current pricing documentation lists separate rates for each model and for prompt-cache writes and reads. To estimate a real workload, count representative prompts with the model you plan to use, estimate generated tokens separately, then apply the current rates and check actual usage. The figures below reflect Anthropic pricing information checked on October 25, 2026; rates and availability can change.

How much does the Claude API cost?

There is no single Claude API price: each model has separate input and output rates, and additional pricing rules can apply to long prompts, caching, batch processing, or inference geography. Anthropic’s current pricing page listed these examples in USD per million tokens as of October 25, 2026:

Model Input price Output price Important qualification
Claude Fable 5.1 $10 per MTok $50 per MTok Example from the live pricing table; confirm current rates and terms.
Claude Opus 5.5 $4 per MTok $20 per MTok Example from the live pricing table; confirm current rates and terms.
Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2 per MTok $10 per MTok Example from the live pricing table; confirm current rates and terms.
Claude Haiku 5.5 $0.10 per MTok for prompts up to 100,000 tokens $0.50 per MTok Prompts over 100,000 tokens use a higher schedule; check the current pricing page for its exact rate.

These are list-price examples, not a quote for a particular application or account. They are also not interchangeable: choosing a model solely by its input rate can mislead if your workload generates substantial output, uses caching, or sends long prompts. For example, at the listed Sonnet 5.5 rates, one million input tokens would cost $2 and one million output tokens would cost $10 before any applicable pricing modifiers.

A dated schedule illustrates why model, date, and inference scope belong in any price comparison. Anthropic’s official list-price PDF, effective May 27, 2026, gave Claude Opus 4.8 standard global Claude API rates of $5 input and $25 output per MTok, and US-only inference rates of $5.50 and $27.50. That schedule is not a substitute for the live rates: use the current pricing page for a current estimate, and check geography-specific terms when they matter to your deployment.

How are Claude API tokens billed?

Token charges are calculated from the amount of input and output processed, using the rate for the selected model and any applicable pricing rules. Since the two directions can have very different prices, estimate them separately rather than treating a request as one undifferentiated token total.

Input and output are different parts of the bill

Input includes the material provided to the model in a request; output is what the model generates. A simple base-price estimate is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimated base cost = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate)

For instance, using the October 25, 2026 listed Sonnet 5.5 rates, a workload with 100,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens would have an estimated base cost of $0.20 for input plus $0.20 for output, or $0.40. This is arithmetic from the listed rates, not an observed bill. Cache use, batch processing, geography, and model-specific rules may change the result.

Token counts are not word counts

A token is a unit used by a model’s tokenizer, not a fixed number of words or characters. Counts vary with the tokenizer, language, and content type, so a word-count conversion is only a rough guess and can produce a poor budget estimate. Anthropic recommends using its token-counting facility with the model ID you intend to call. For a forecast, count representative input with that model and estimate output separately; after launch, compare the estimate with actual usage records.

Does a larger context window cost more?

A context window is the amount of content a model can process in a request context; it is not, by itself, a flat charge. The cost depends on the tokens actually processed and on any model-specific pricing rules that apply to the prompt length.

Anthropic’s current pricing documentation says Claude 4.6 and later models, with the exception of Claude Haiku 5.5, and Claude Mythos Preview include the full 1-million-token context window at standard pricing. It also states that standard prompt-cache and Batch API discounts apply across that window. A large available window therefore does not mean every request incurs a fixed fee for the entire window: estimate usage from the actual request and check whether the chosen model has a long-prompt price rule.

Haiku 5.5 has a prompt-length threshold

For Claude Haiku 5.5, Anthropic says prompts over 100,000 tokens incur a higher pricing schedule. The prompt-length calculation includes cache reads and cache writes, and each request is priced independently. The documentation does not make the lower listed input rate applicable above that threshold, so do not extrapolate the up-to-100,000-token figure to longer prompts; look up the live higher schedule before estimating.

When planning around a large context limit, distinguish capacity from economics. A larger context can let an application keep more material in one request, but the amount and type of content sent still determine token usage. If your prompt is near a pricing threshold, include the full prompt length—including cached material—in the estimate.

How does prompt caching change the price?

Prompt caching lets an application reuse previously processed prompt material. It can reduce repeated processing costs and latency when substantial context stays the same across requests, but it adds a distinct cache-write price and a separate cache-read price; savings depend on how much context is reused, how often, and within what validity period.

Anthropic’s current pricing documentation lists cache writes with these multipliers against base input price:

Cache operation Price basis in current documentation When it applies
5-minute cache write 1.25× base input price When material is stored with this cache duration.
1-hour cache write 2× base input price When material is stored with this cache duration.
Cache read Reduced multiplier; the exact rate is model-specific When cached material is reused.

These multipliers describe pricing mechanics, not a guarantee that caching lowers every workload’s total. A write costs more than ordinary input under the stated multipliers, so the material needs enough useful reuses to offset that cost. Anthropic’s live table includes model-specific cache-read terms and exceptions; use those rates and cache-validity rules for the model being deployed instead of applying one universal read multiplier or break-even claim.

To assess caching, identify the stable part of a prompt—such as repeated instructions or reference material—and the variable part that changes from request to request. Estimate how many times the stable portion is likely to be read during the cache duration, then compare the combined write and read costs with the cost of sending that material as ordinary input. Cache pricing may interact with other modifiers, including batch processing and data residency, so verify the combination on the live price page.

When is the Batch API a useful cost control?

The Batch API is intended for asynchronous processing of large volumes of requests. Anthropic states that it offers a 50% discount on both input and output tokens for eligible batch work, making it a candidate when requests do not need an immediate response.

For a simple illustration, applying a 50% reduction to the listed Sonnet 5.5 base rates would yield $1 per MTok input and $5 per MTok output. Treat that as an illustration of the stated discount, not a guaranteed effective rate for every batch: model rates vary, and batch pricing may interact with cache and geography modifiers. Check current terms for the model and deployment you will use.

Batch processing is not a universal discount for interactive, latency-sensitive requests. If a user is waiting for a response, the asynchronous nature of the workload may make it unsuitable even when its token rate is lower. Consider the delay the application can tolerate, the volume of requests, and any combined pricing rules before moving work to a batch flow.

How can I estimate and control Claude API costs?

Build the estimate around the workload you expect to run, not a headline rate or a guessed word-to-token conversion. A useful forecast has a model and deployment scope, representative token counts, expected request volume, and any pricing modifiers.

  1. Select the model and scope. Identify the model ID and whether your use requires a particular inference geography. Read the current input and output prices and the model’s long-prompt rules.
  2. Measure representative requests. Use Anthropic’s token-counting facility with the target model ID for input. Estimate output length separately from examples that represent the application; do not assume input and output volumes are equal.
  3. Apply feature-specific prices. Account for cache writes and reads if you will reuse prompt material, batch rates if the work is eligible and asynchronous, and geography or data-residency terms if relevant. Check how modifiers combine rather than assuming discounts multiply in a particular way.
  4. Scale by expected use. Multiply the per-request estimate by expected request volume, using realistic low, typical, and high usage scenarios if demand is uncertain. Keep distinct scenarios for materially different prompts or output lengths.
  5. Compare the forecast with actual usage. Monitor usage in the Claude Console and review usage records. Adjust the model, reusable prompt structure, or batch eligibility when actual token mix or volume differs from the assumptions.

Choose a model for the task, not one price column

The lowest listed input price does not automatically make a model the best-value choice. Compare input and output rates alongside the capability the task requires, prompt length, expected answer size, cache economics, acceptable latency, and geographic requirements. Anthropic’s general cost-control guidance includes selecting a model suited to task difficulty, caching repeated context, batching work that can wait, and monitoring usage patterns. The right choice depends on your own prompt/output mix rather than a universally cheapest model.

What billing and account limits should I plan for?

Payment arrangements affect how an account pays and operates, but they do not replace the model’s unit prices. Anthropic’s Help Center says most organizations use prepaid API credits, while organizations with invoicing arrangements are billed monthly. Since credit and account policies can change, confirm the current Help Center guidance for your organization before treating a payment arrangement as fixed.

Successful API calls and completed tasks are billed. Anthropic also says a client disconnect or timeout can still be charged if the request was on track to succeed, so a client-side timeout is not proof that no work was processed. For cost investigations, reconcile request behavior with usage records rather than relying only on whether your application received a response.

Rate limits vary by usage tier, and custom rates or limits may be available by arrangement. Check account-specific documentation for the limits that apply to your tier instead of planning from a generic threshold. Rate-limit availability and unit pricing answer different operational questions: one concerns the pace or volume permitted, the other the price of token usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts toward Haiku 5.5’s 100,000-token pricing threshold?

Anthropic’s current pricing documentation includes cache reads and cache writes in prompt length, and evaluates each request independently. If a request is close to the threshold, count the full prompt rather than only the newly supplied, uncached text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I calculate my exact bill from the listed per-million-token rates?

No. List rates provide a basis for estimating token charges, but the final amount depends on actual billed usage and any applicable cache, batch, geography, or model-specific terms. Use usage records to reconcile a forecast with what the account processed.

Does the API pricing table show my account’s rate limits?

Not necessarily. Anthropic says rate limits vary by usage tier and that custom terms may be available by arrangement, so the generic pricing documentation is not a substitute for your account-specific limit information.
