No—not in the PC sense. The original Cities: Skylines Nintendo Switch Edition runs on Switch 2, but the documented Steam Workshop and desktop-file mod workflow does not carry over to Nintendo’s console. The Switch 2 Expanded Edition, released October 28, 2026, adds a built-in map editor and more city-building tools, yet its official feature list does not document Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods for the original game, or importing custom buildings, vehicles, props, meshes, textures, or code.
In practical terms, you can create maps with tools included in the Expanded Edition. You cannot currently install PC-style external mods or drop custom asset files onto either Switch version.

Can you install Cities: Skylines mods on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 supports the original Nintendo Switch Edition, but compatibility is not the same thing as access to the PC mod ecosystem. Nintendo describes the older release as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” Its listing does not provide a mod browser, Workshop subscription path, or custom-asset importer.
Paradox Interactive’s support guidance for the original game describes Steam Workshop content and Addons folders on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Those are desktop workflows that require PC file locations and a Steam installation. The documented instructions do not describe an equivalent process for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.

- Imported player files: no documented way to add custom buildings, vehicles, props, meshes, textures, or code mods.
- Mod-dependent PC saves: there is no documented guarantee that dependencies will resolve after moving a save to Switch 2.
That makes the responsible answer “no” for external mods, while leaving room for the game’s own creation tools, which are a different feature.
What custom content can you use on Switch 2?
“Custom assets” can mean two very different things. Separating them prevents the most common misunderstanding.

Built-in creation tools
The Expanded Edition includes a map editor. Nintendo describes it as a way to “create and customize your own landscapes and maps before you start building.” You can shape terrain and prepare a map inside the game, then begin a city on that map. This is first-party content creation, not installation of files made in an external 3D package.
Imported player assets
On PC, a custom asset can be a user-made building, vehicle, prop, mesh, texture, or code modification downloaded through a service or copied into a game directory. The Switch 2 product materials do not document importing any of those asset types. The map editor therefore should not be interpreted as an asset editor or a route to Workshop content.
If a guide tells you to subscribe to a Workshop item, copy an asset into an Addons folder, or enable a desktop code mod, it is describing the PC version. Those steps do not map to the console editions.

What does the Expanded Edition add besides the map editor?
The purpose-built Switch 2 release is more than a simple compatibility patch. Paradox Interactive announced it on October 7, 2026, for launch on October 28, 2026, with improvements aimed at larger and more flexible console cities.

|---|---|---|
| Buildable area | 25 buildable tiles, up from the original nine-tile limit | It does not add unlimited Workshop maps or assets |
| Map editor | Create and customize landscapes and maps before starting a city | It is not a 3D model, texture, or code-mod importer |
| Environmental controls | Adjust time of day, rain, fog, and environmental coloring | These are in-game settings, not downloaded visual mods |
| Graphics options | Performance target of 60 frames per second or quality target of 30 frames per second | Targets are presentation modes, not benchmark results for every city |
| Controls | Keyboard-and-mouse support alongside traditional controller configurations | Peripherals do not turn the console into a PC file system |
| Included content | Ten listed DLC expansions and content packs | Included DLC is official content, not user-created assets |
The 60-FPS performance target and 30-FPS quality target are Paradox’s stated targets. Actual frame rate can depend on city complexity and settings; the announcement does not promise a fixed result for every save.
How do the original Switch Edition and Expanded Edition differ?
Both releases are official console products, and neither is documented as supporting the PC Steam Workshop workflow. The Expanded Edition is the one with the explicitly advertised map editor, larger buildable area, environmental controls, graphics choices, and keyboard-and-mouse support.
| Characteristic | Original Nintendo Switch Edition | Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition |

Paradox listed a suggested launch price of $49, £41.49, or €49 for the Expanded Edition. Existing Nintendo Switch owners were offered a 70% loyalty discount from October 28, 2026, through April 28, 2027. Those are launch-period terms; check the Nintendo eShop or a retailer for your region before buying.
Does the map editor let you make custom buildings or vehicles?
No. The map editor works at the landscape and map level: terrain, starting geography, and the environment in which a city is built. A custom building or vehicle is a separate asset with its own model, textures, metadata, and often gameplay behavior.

Nothing in the Switch 2 feature descriptions says that the editor can model a new bus, import a mesh, paint a texture, package a prop, or compile a code modification. You can design a distinctive city using the editor and the official buildings, roads, vehicles, and policies supplied with the game, but that is not the same as installing a community asset.
Can you use Steam Workshop items on Switch 2?
There is no documented Steam client or Workshop subscription workflow for the Switch editions. Steam Workshop items are tied to the PC distribution ecosystem, where subscriptions download files into desktop game directories. A Switch 2 copy does not expose those directories or provide a documented way to synchronize them.
Do not assume that owning the same account, purchasing the same DLC, or using a keyboard and mouse creates Workshop access. Those are separate platform capabilities. Unless Paradox publishes a Switch-specific announcement with an in-game browser or import process, treat Workshop items as PC-only for this game.
Can you use Paradox Mods with the original Cities: Skylines on Switch 2?
The available official material does not document Paradox Mods support for the original game on Switch 2. Confusion often comes from documentation for Cities: Skylines II, a different game with a different mod architecture.
Paradox’s sequel documentation describes Paradox Mods as a way to make mods available across PC and console, with documented map, code, and later asset-mod support for that sequel. Those pages do not establish that the original Cities: Skylines received the same system on Nintendo hardware. Always check that a guide names the original game and the Switch edition before following it.

Can you transfer a modded PC city to Switch 2?
A PC save that depends on Workshop assets or code mods should not be expected to load with those dependencies intact on Switch 2. The console materials do not document a save-conversion service that packages external assets, and the original game’s support instructions assume desktop Addons folders.
A save may also refer to buildings, roads, vehicles, or simulation changes that do not exist in the console installation. Even if a file-transfer method appears to work, missing dependencies can produce absent assets, warnings, or an unusable city. Keep a separate, unmodded save if you plan to move between platforms, and regard any cross-platform transfer as unsupported unless Paradox provides explicit instructions.
What can you do instead of installing mods?
Switch 2 owners who want a deeper building sandbox can use the Expanded Edition’s first-party tools and content deliberately:
- Start in the map editor. Shape terrain and environmental conditions before placing the first road.
- Plan around 25 tiles. The larger stated limit allows a broader regional layout than the original nine-tile ceiling.
- Use environmental controls for presentation. Set time of day, rain, fog, and environmental coloring to create a chosen atmosphere.
- Choose a graphics mode. Use the performance target when responsiveness matters or the quality target when visual detail matters more; the targets are not guarantees for every city.
- Build with the included expansions. The ten listed DLC packs provide official systems and assets without external files.
- Use keyboard and mouse if preferred. The Expanded Edition supports them in addition to controller configurations, which can make precise placement easier.
These options can produce a substantially larger and more personalized city, but they remain within the content shipped or officially released for the console edition.

- Want Workshop subscriptions, custom vehicles, or code mods? The documented Switch versions do not provide that PC workflow. A PC edition is the platform whose support documentation describes those features.
- Considering a modded PC save? Do not buy the console version expecting external dependencies to transfer; there is no documented guarantee that they will.
For physical purchases, availability and regional inventory can vary. Verify the exact edition and platform on the listing, because a Switch copy and the Switch 2 Expanded Edition are different products.
What would change this answer?
The answer would change only with a platform-specific announcement that names the original game on Switch 2 and documents an actual delivery method—for example, an in-game mod browser, account-based console library, or supported asset-import procedure. A general statement about mod support for Cities: Skylines II, a PC-only patch note, or a new DLC announcement would not be enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a USB drive let me copy Cities: Skylines assets to Switch 2?
No supported procedure is documented for copying asset packages from USB storage into either Switch edition. Console storage access and game content authorization are controlled by Nintendo’s system, so placing files on removable media does not make them visible to the game.
Are the ten DLC packs in the Expanded Edition the same as community mods?
No. DLC packs are officially authored, packaged, and supported content distributed with the game. They add systems and assets without requiring a Workshop subscription or external files, but they do not provide the open-ended variety of user-made mods.
Can I create a custom map on the original Switch Edition?
The original edition’s compatibility listing does not advertise the Expanded Edition’s map editor. The explicitly documented map-editing feature belongs to the Switch 2 Expanded Edition, so check the product name before purchasing for that capability.
Does keyboard-and-mouse support make PC mod tools available?
No. Keyboard-and-mouse support changes how you control the game; it does not expose desktop folders, Steam services, or an asset-import pipeline. The Expanded Edition remains a console build even when used with peripherals.
