Yes—Chrome’s built-in Listen to this page feature can turn eligible webpages into audio on an Android smartphone, making long articles easier to follow while you walk, do chores, or rest your eyes. Standard playback reads the page’s words aloud. AI playback creates a podcast-like conversation that captures the main ideas instead of reading every sentence. Google says playback can continue while you browse other tabs and while the screen is locked, although availability depends on the website, Chrome version, language, account settings, geography, and rollout status. It is a practical way to work through a queue, but no authoritative study establishes a completion-rate increase or a fixed amount of time saved.
How do I get Chrome to read a webpage aloud?
On Android, the control is inside Chrome’s three-dot menu. If the page is eligible, you can start listening in a few taps.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the article or other text-heavy webpage in Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap the three-dot More menu in the browser toolbar.
- Choose Listen to this page.
- Use the player to start or pause playback. The player also provides rewind and fast-forward controls, speed choices, voice selection, text highlighting, and automatic scrolling.
The command does not appear on every site. Google’s Chrome Help documentation says the feature is not yet available on all websites, so a missing menu item usually means that Chrome cannot prepare that particular page for playback rather than that your phone is broken.
What is Listen to this page in Chrome?
Listen to this page is Chrome for Android’s page-to-speech tool. It extracts the readable text from an eligible webpage and presents a compact audio player, allowing you to hear the article without leaving the browser.

Google documents two output modes. Standard playback is a reading of the page itself; AI playback is a generated interpretation designed to sound like a conversation. Selecting the right mode matters when you need exact wording, citations, instructions, or legal language.
Standard playback
Standard playback reads the words Chrome identifies on the page. It is the safer choice for technical instructions, news details, recipes, accessibility needs, or any situation in which omissions could change the meaning. The player can highlight text and auto-scroll as the narration advances, helping you follow along visually.
AI playback
AI playback turns the source into a podcast-like exchange between generated speakers. It is intended for a conversational overview, not a verbatim reading. Because it is generated, it can condense, reorder, or misinterpret details; check the original page whenever a precise number, qualification, quotation, or step matters.
Google’s help material explains the distinction but does not publish an accuracy percentage or a standard listening-time reduction. Treat AI playback as a convenience summary rather than proof that every claim in the source was preserved.
What is the difference between Standard playback and AI playback?
Both modes start from the webpage in Chrome, but they solve different problems: one maximizes fidelity, while the other maximizes conversational comprehension.

| Mode | Output | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard playback | Verbatim-style reading of the words Chrome extracts | Following exact instructions, facts, quotations, or full articles | Only text Chrome can identify is read; page eligibility still applies |
| AI playback | Generated, podcast-like conversation summarizing the page | Getting the main ideas while multitasking or deciding whether to read closely | It is an interpretation, not a guaranteed complete or exact rendering |
If you are clearing a backlog, a sensible pattern is to use AI playback as a triage pass and Standard playback for articles you decide deserve careful attention. That keeps the convenience of audio without treating a generated summary as the authoritative source.

Can Chrome keep reading while my phone is locked?
Google says you can continue browsing other tabs and keep listening with the screen locked. That makes the feature useful during a walk, household chores, commuting, or any time you want the audio without keeping the display awake.
Background behavior has also changed during Chrome’s staged releases. Independent reporting described background playback arriving in a Chrome 130 rollout in 2024, but rollout timing can vary by Chrome build and account. If locking the screen stops playback, update Chrome, reopen the page, and try again; the behavior may not have reached your installation yet.
Keep in mind that screen-lock playback is a browser capability, not a downloaded audio file. Closing Chrome, losing the page’s network connection, or allowing the operating system to suspend the app can still interrupt listening. The official documentation confirms the intended background experience but does not promise identical behavior on every Android model.
Why is Listen to this page missing from Chrome?
The option can disappear for several independent reasons. Check them in this order so you do not waste time changing settings that cannot make an ineligible page playable.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- The website is not eligible. Google explicitly says the feature is unavailable on some websites. Try a conventional article page rather than a login screen, web app, or page whose text is rendered in a way Chrome cannot extract.
- Your Chrome version is too old. Google Chrome Enterprise policy documentation lists Android support for the ListenToThisPageEnabled policy beginning with Chrome 122. That is a baseline for policy support, not a guarantee that every account or page will show the command. Update Chrome through Google Play, then test again.
- AI playback requirements are not met. AI playback requires Chrome in English and the Make searches and browsing better setting. Standard playback may still be available when AI playback is not.
- Rollout or account differences apply. Features can be enabled progressively, and geography, account configuration, or managed-device policies can change what appears.
- The page has little extractable text. A photo gallery, interactive tool, paywall prompt, or heavily scripted interface may not expose a readable article to Chrome.
There is no separate download named Listen to this page in the Android app drawer. It is a Chrome menu feature, so reinstalling a different speech app will not make the menu entry appear.
How do I use the player to work through a reading backlog?
Audio is most useful when you make a deliberate choice about what to hear and what to read on screen. The following workflow keeps the browser’s convenience while protecting against summaries that omit details.
- Open and screen the article first. Look at the headline, author, date, and page structure. If the page is mostly navigation, comments, or embedded widgets, Chrome may produce a poor reading.
- Start with Standard playback when precision matters. Use it for how-to guides, health or financial information, code, measurements, and anything you may quote later.
- Use AI playback for triage. When you have dozens of saved pages, the conversational mode can help you decide which subjects deserve a full read. Mark anything that sounds incomplete or surprising for visual verification.
- Adjust speed and voice. Begin at a comfortable rate, then increase speed only after comprehension remains strong. Voice and speed controls are in the player rather than in the page’s own settings.
- Keep highlighting and auto-scroll on when learning. The moving text gives your eyes a visual anchor and makes it easier to recover after a distraction.
- Switch tabs or lock the screen when appropriate. Google documents continued playback across tabs and with the screen locked. Keep the article open until you are finished; do not assume Chrome has created an offline copy.
- Return to the source for decisions. Pause the audio and read the original passage whenever a qualification, table, citation, warning, or exact instruction affects what you will do.
This process can make a backlog feel manageable without claiming a universal productivity result. The first-person outcome in the feature’s popular descriptions—finishing more queued articles—is an individual experience, not a measured study.
What controls does Listen to this page provide?
The player combines the controls most listeners need without requiring a separate reader app.
- Play and pause: stop at a useful point and resume later.
- Rewind and fast-forward: revisit a sentence or skip a section.
- Playback speed: match the narration to your listening comfort.
- Voice selection: choose among voices exposed by your Chrome and Android language configuration.
- Text highlighting: follow the words as they are spoken.
- Automatic scrolling: keep the current passage in view while listening.
The exact voice list and interface can differ by Android version, installed language data, and Chrome release. If a control is absent, update Chrome and check the player after starting playback on a different eligible page.

Can I use a similar read-aloud feature on a computer?
Yes, but Chrome’s desktop tools are separate from the Android Listen to this page menu. On computers, Chrome’s Reading mode opens a focused reading view and can read text aloud, with voice selection, playback speed, and previous- or next-sentence controls. Reading mode is unavailable on some sites, so it should not be treated as a universal replacement.
ChromeOS also includes Select-to-Speak, an accessibility feature that speaks a selected region or highlighted text after you enable it in Accessibility settings. Chromium describes it as useful for people with low vision, dyslexia, neurological differences, or anyone who prefers listening to text. Unlike whole-page playback, Select-to-Speak is deliberately limited to the region you choose.
| Tool | Platform | What it reads | Controls or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listen to this page | Android Chrome | Eligible webpage text; Standard or generated AI playback | Speed, voice, highlighting, auto-scroll, tab and screen-lock listening; website and rollout eligibility apply |
| Reading mode | Chrome on computers | Text presented in a focused reading view | Voice, speed, previous/next sentence; unavailable on some sites |
| Select-to-Speak | ChromeOS | A selected or highlighted region | Must be enabled in Accessibility settings; selection-based rather than automatic whole-page reading |
Which Chrome listening option should I choose?
Choose according to how much of the source you need and which device you are using.

|---|---|---|
| You need every sentence or exact wording | Android Standard playback | It reads the page’s words instead of generating a summary |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the feature’s important limitations?
Listen to this page is convenient, but it is not a guarantee that every webpage becomes a clean audiobook. Eligibility can fail, generated audio can simplify the source, and staged browser releases can make behavior differ between devices.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- There is no published authoritative statistic showing how many users finish articles with the feature, how much time it saves, or how accurate AI playback is.
- AI playback should not replace checking the original when details matter.
- Website support is selective, and a page that works today may change after a site redesign.
- AI playback requires English Chrome and the Make searches and browsing better setting according to Google’s instructions.
- Chrome 122 is the documented Android policy baseline, while later background-playback behavior has been reported during Chrome 130 rollout; neither number guarantees identical availability for every user.
These limits explain why the feature can be excellent for clearing routine reading while still being unsuitable as the sole way to consume safety-critical, contractual, or highly technical material.
Is Chrome’s hidden audio feature worth using for a backlog?
For Android readers with eligible pages, it is worth trying because it turns an existing browser tab into flexible audio with no separate reading queue to maintain. Standard playback handles faithful listening, while AI playback can help sort a large queue by giving you a conversational preview. The strongest benefit is practical flexibility—listening while moving around or with the screen locked—not a proven numerical productivity gain.

Keep the original article as the authority, update Chrome, and expect occasional pages or accounts not to expose the command. Used with those boundaries, Listen to this page is a useful bridge between reading and listening rather than a replacement for reading every source on screen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Listen to this page work on iPhone or iPad?
The documentation covered here describes the feature for Chrome on Android and does not establish equivalent support on iOS or iPadOS. Do not assume that an Android menu path or its AI playback requirements will appear in Chrome on Apple devices.
Can I save a webpage as an audio file from Chrome?
The documented feature provides in-browser playback controls, not an export command for creating an audio file. If you need a saved recording, you would need a separate tool, and its permissions and terms should be checked independently.
Will Chrome read pages behind a sign-in or paywall?
The sources do not promise playback for authenticated, metered, or paywalled pages. Because website eligibility depends on whether Chrome can extract readable text, those pages may omit the command or read only the portion available in the browser.
Why does AI playback sound like two people talking?
AI playback is designed as a generated podcast-like conversation rather than a single voice reading the source. The dialogue is a presentation layer created from the page, so the speakers’ exchange should not be mistaken for quoted remarks from the author.
