Chromebook Plus is Google’s higher-spec Chromebook category, not a completely separate operating system. A Plus laptop must meet minimum hardware standards—at least 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a recent Core i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, a 1080p webcam and a Full HD IPS-or-better display—and receives a broader set of ChromeOS and Google AI features. Regular Chromebooks can still receive shared features such as Gemini, so the Plus badge is not the only way to get Google AI. The practical difference is consistent baseline hardware plus additional productivity, camera and creative tools. Whether it is worth paying more depends on your workload, the exact processor and screen in the model, and which AI features are available in your country and language.
What is the difference between Chromebook Plus and a regular Chromebook?
Chromebook Plus is a certification category with a defined hardware floor and enhanced ChromeOS software. “Regular Chromebook” describes the much wider range of ChromeOS laptops that do not carry that designation. A regular model may be inexpensive and perfectly adequate for browsing, schoolwork or streaming, but its processor, memory, storage, camera and display can vary widely.

Google describes Chromebook Plus laptops as having “exclusive AI features, as well as double the speed, memory, and storage than a Chromebook.” That is category-level comparison language, not a guarantee that every Plus laptop is twice as fast as every non-Plus model. Some regular Chromebooks exceed one or more Plus minimums, while some Plus models are entry-level within the Plus range. Compare the actual configuration and not only the logo.
Chromebook Plus hardware floor
| Component | Chromebook Plus requirement | What varies on regular Chromebooks | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i3 12th Generation or newer, or AMD Ryzen 3 5000 series or newer | Not fixed; models range from low-power chips to processors that exceed the Plus floor | Controls responsiveness when many tabs, Android apps and web applications run together |
| Memory | 8GB RAM or more | Not fixed; lower-memory configurations are common | More headroom for tabs, video calls, documents and creative web apps |
| Storage | 128GB or more | Not fixed; capacity and storage type differ by model | Leaves more room for offline files, Android apps and ChromeOS updates |
| Webcam | 1080p or better, with Temporal Noise Reduction | Resolution and processing vary | Produces a sharper image and can support more advanced call effects |
| Display | Full HD IPS or better | Resolution, panel type and brightness vary considerably | Improves workspace, text clarity and photo or video editing |
These are minimum eligibility figures from Google’s current Chromebook Help documentation. They do not specify a particular processor wattage, thermal design, brightness level, battery capacity, keyboard, port selection or repairability. Two Plus laptops can therefore feel very different in daily use.

Which AI features do Chromebook Plus laptops include?
Current Chromebook Plus software combines Gemini access with tools for reading, writing, image editing, transcription and video calls. Availability is not identical everywhere: Google says features can depend on the device, ChromeOS version, country, language and internet connection.
Gemini and the Chromebook experience
Gemini is available from ChromeOS on Chromebook Plus. It can help with questions, drafting and other supported tasks, but the exact interface and capabilities can change as Google updates ChromeOS. Gemini access alone does not identify a Plus laptop; Google announced in October 2024 that Gemini would come to all Chromebooks.

Chromebook Plus includes NotebookLM integration in the ChromeOS shelf. The shelf shortcut is intended to make it easier to open Google’s source-grounded notebook tool while working. Whether a particular account can use every NotebookLM capability still depends on Google’s service availability and account rules.
Help me read
Help me read can summarize a PDF, article or website and answer follow-up questions about the material. Google’s October 2024 launch guide listed it in English initially, with more languages to follow. If your Chromebook is set to another language, check the current feature listing before buying for this function specifically.
Quick Insert
Quick Insert is designed to place AI-generated images, writing assistance, GIFs and other content into supported fields without switching applications. Google’s launch documentation said the dedicated Quick Insert key initially appeared on a Samsung Chromebook Plus, with more devices planned. On other models, the feature or its shortcut may differ, so confirm the keyboard layout and supported ChromeOS build.
Super Extract
Super Extract turns text found in images, receipts, handwritten notes and PDFs into editable text. This is useful for copying information from a photograph or scanned document, but recognition quality depends on image clarity, handwriting and language support. Treat the result as editable text that should be checked rather than as a guaranteed exact transcription.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle Photos editing
Chromebook Plus supports Google Photos tools such as Magic Editor for repositioning subjects and Magic Eraser for removing distractions. These are particularly useful on a Full HD-or-better display when you work with photos in the browser. They do not turn the laptop into a professional desktop editing workstation; source resolution, cloud processing and the limits of the web application still apply.

Enhanced video calls
Supported Plus devices can provide noise cancellation and studio or portrait effects during calls. The 1080p webcam and Temporal Noise Reduction requirement establishes a stronger starting point than a basic camera, but the final image also depends on lighting, lens quality and the conferencing service. Verify that the specific model lists the effects you need.
Other Plus-era features
Google’s October 2024 announcement highlighted Help me read, Live Translate and an AI-powered Recorder app as additional Chromebook Plus features. The same announcement said Gemini was coming to all Chromebooks. Google’s 2024 launch guide also listed generative wallpaper as globally available and Help me write as available globally in English, Japanese, German and French at that time. These dated rollout notes are useful context, but they should not be treated as a permanent promise for every model or market.

Do normal Chromebooks get Gemini?
Yes. Google’s October 2024 announcement said that all Chromebooks would come with Gemini. That makes Gemini a shared ChromeOS capability rather than a reliable Plus-only test. A regular Chromebook may therefore answer the basic “Can I use Gemini?” question with yes, while lacking the Plus hardware floor or the newer integrated tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There are still practical differences. A low-memory Chromebook can become less comfortable when Gemini, a video call and many browser tabs compete for resources. Service access can also depend on the Google account, language, country and network. Check the current ChromeOS and Google account requirements if Gemini is the main reason you are shopping.
How does the Plus hardware affect everyday performance?
The Plus minimums matter most when a Chromebook is used as a work computer rather than as a simple browsing terminal. They establish enough memory, storage and processor capability for more demanding browser-based workloads, but the exact model remains decisive.
Many tabs and multitasking
Eight gigabytes of RAM gives ChromeOS more room for simultaneous tabs, document editors, messaging, Android applications and a call. It is a floor, not a guarantee that every workload will remain smooth. Heavy users should compare 16GB configurations when available and look at the processor generation instead of assuming that every Plus badge represents the same speed.
Video conferencing
A 1080p webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction can produce a cleaner, more detailed image than a basic camera, and compatible models can add noise cancellation or portrait and studio effects. Look beyond resolution: microphone placement, hinge position, screen brightness and battery life influence whether the laptop works well in a real meeting.

Photos, video and web applications
Google positions Chromebook Plus for Photoshop on the web, Adobe Express and LumaFusion, in addition to Google Photos editing. These applications benefit from the Plus floor and from a better display, but the category does not make every model a workstation. Processor class, cooling, screen color and brightness, ports and storage speed still determine how pleasant creative work feels.
Offline files and local storage
At least 128GB gives a Plus laptop more room for downloaded documents, media, Android applications and offline project files than the smallest Chromebook configurations. It does not remove the need to manage storage: large video projects and photo libraries can consume that capacity quickly. Check whether the model uses expandable storage or expects you to rely primarily on cloud services.
Is Chromebook Plus worth the extra cost?
For many people, yes—especially when the price difference buys a noticeably better screen, keyboard, camera and battery as well as the Plus certification. It is less compelling when you only browse, write short documents and stream video, or when a regular Chromebook already has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a recent processor.
Chromebook Plus is a strong fit when you:
- Keep many tabs and applications open during school or work.
- Use video conferencing frequently and want a sharper camera and supported call effects.
- Edit photos or video in web applications such as Photoshop on the web, Adobe Express or LumaFusion.
- Need more local room for offline files than entry-level Chromebooks provide.
- Want Plus-specific tools such as Help me read, Super Extract or Quick Insert and have confirmed they work in your language and country.
A regular Chromebook may be sufficient when you:
- Mainly browse, stream, use email and edit lightweight documents.
- Already found a non-Plus model with equal or better RAM, storage and processor specifications.
- Care more about a particular feature—such as a low weight, a bright touchscreen or long battery life—than about the Plus badge.
- Only want Gemini, since Google announced Gemini availability across Chromebooks.
How much RAM and storage does Chromebook Plus require?
The official minimum is 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Those figures define eligibility; they are not a recommendation that every buyer should stop there. A student who stores mostly cloud documents may be comfortable at the floor, while someone running many tabs, Android apps and creative projects should consider a model with more memory or storage if the price and battery trade-offs make sense.

Also check storage type, because capacity alone does not describe responsiveness. Compare the processor generation, display and ports alongside RAM and storage. A regular Chromebook with more storage but a much slower processor may not be a better multitasking machine, while a Plus model with the minimum capacity may be a poor fit for large offline media libraries.
How should you compare individual Chromebook Plus models?
Use the Plus badge as a starting filter, then compare the complete specification sheet and the support information for your market.
- Check the processor. Confirm the generation and class, not merely the words “Core” or “Ryzen.” The Plus floor is Intel Core i3 12th Generation or newer, or AMD Ryzen 3 5000 series or newer, but higher-tier chips can provide more headroom.
- Check RAM and storage. Confirm at least 8GB and 128GB, then decide whether your tabs, applications and offline files justify more.
- Inspect the display. Compare resolution, IPS or other panel type, brightness, refresh rate, touch support and whether the hinge makes it a practical 2-in-1.
- Verify the camera and call tools. Look for 1080p or better, Temporal Noise Reduction and explicit support for the noise-cancellation, studio or portrait effects you want.
- Evaluate mobility. Compare quoted battery capacity or runtime, weight, charger size, keyboard comfort and port selection rather than assuming all Plus laptops travel alike.
- Check durability and repair options. Warranty terms, replaceable parts and repairability differ by manufacturer and model.
- Confirm market support. Verify that the desired AI feature supports your country, language, Google account and ChromeOS version, and check current retailer stock and price.
Which Chromebook Plus models are officially highlighted?
Google’s current product page highlights the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14. Google’s October 2024 announcement introduced the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Google’s eligibility documentation also lists qualifying models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, Framework, HP and Lenovo. These names identify examples in Google’s materials, not a universal ranking; configurations, prices, availability and warranties vary by region.

- 15.6" FHD IPS, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Super-Fast WiFi 6 and Bluetooth, HD Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Star Silver
When comparing a named model, read the exact configuration. A product family can include different processors, displays, memory capacities and storage options, and only some configurations may satisfy every feature requirement. Confirm the model number before ordering.
What do the launch prices and current Google AI offer mean?
Chromebook Plus launched in 2023 with a starting price of $399. Google’s October 2024 announcement described new Plus models starting at $350. Both figures are historical launch statements, not current market quotes; retailer pricing and inventory change over time and differ by country.
Google’s current product page advertises Google AI Pro, 5TB of storage and additional benefits at no cost for 12 months for eligible buyers. This is a limited promotional offer, not a permanent specification of Chromebook Plus. The footnotes say that terms apply and that eligibility can depend on the model, age, language, country and redemption deadline. Check those conditions for the exact laptop before treating the offer as part of its value.
What can go wrong when choosing Chromebook Plus?
Assuming every Plus laptop is equally fast
The badge confirms a floor, not identical performance. Compare the processor, cooling, display and storage implementation, especially if you edit video or keep dozens of tabs open.
Buying for Gemini alone
Gemini was announced for all Chromebooks. If that is your only requirement, a well-equipped regular model may be a better value than paying solely for the Plus label.
Expecting every AI tool in every language
Feature rollouts can be limited by country, language, account, device and internet connection. Confirm support in the settings and documentation for your market before relying on Help me read, Live Translate, Super Extract or call effects.
Ignoring the screen and keyboard
A Full HD IPS minimum does not tell you brightness, color coverage, refresh rate or typing comfort. These qualities affect every hour of use and can matter more than a small processor difference.

Treating a promotional subscription as permanent
The 12-month Google AI Pro and 5TB offer has eligibility and redemption conditions. Record the redemption deadline and the terms that apply to your country and account.
What is the practical verdict?
Choose Chromebook Plus when you want a predictable baseline of 8GB memory, 128GB storage, a recent processor, a 1080p noise-reduced camera and a Full HD IPS display, together with Plus-oriented AI and creative tools. Choose a regular Chromebook when your workload is light or when a specific non-Plus model offers equal or better hardware for less. In both cases, compare the complete configuration and confirm regional feature support; the badge is useful, but it is not a substitute for reading the specification sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a regular Chromebook into a Chromebook Plus with an update?
No. ChromeOS updates can add shared or newly released software features, but the Plus designation is tied to hardware eligibility as well as software. A regular model does not become a certified Plus laptop simply because it receives Gemini or another AI feature.
Do Chromebook Plus AI tools work without an internet connection?
Many of the advertised tools rely on Google services and therefore need an internet connection for at least part of the task. Offline access varies by feature and ChromeOS release, so test the specific workflow if you expect to work without reliable connectivity.
Does buying Chromebook Plus require a separate AI subscription?
The Plus category itself is not presented as a separate subscription. Google has advertised a limited 12-month Google AI Pro and 5TB offer for eligible buyers, but model, country, age, language and redemption conditions apply; check the terms attached to the exact purchase.
Can I upgrade a Chromebook Plus after buying it?
Do not assume that RAM or internal storage can be upgraded. Expansion and repair options are model-specific, so check the manufacturer’s service documentation before purchase and choose the capacity you expect to need.
