The Haier HRF565YHS is a spacious four-door French-door refrigerator-freezer for Australian and New Zealand kitchens. It offers a tank-fed chilled-water dispenser, frost-free freezer storage, humidity-oriented produce drawers and a manual twist ice maker without requiring a plumbing connection. Its drawbacks are a modest three-star energy rating, a large installation footprint, manual rather than automatic ice production and discontinued status. Capacity figures also vary by document: Haier’s Australian guide lists 519 L of stated volume, while a New Zealand guide and CHOICE list 565 L of claimed total capacity under a different convention. That distinction matters when comparing it with newer models. If you find one at clearance pricing and can accommodate its dimensions, it can still suit a large household; otherwise, current models may offer easier support and better efficiency.
Is the Haier HRF565YHS any good?
It is a practical high-capacity refrigerator for buyers who want four-door organisation and chilled water without plumbing. The layout separates the refrigerator and freezer areas, while features such as frost-free operation, humidity-controlled crisper bins, DualZone™, DryZone™ and SuperFreeze target everyday convenience. The model is less compelling if low running costs, automatic ice or long-term availability are priorities.

CHOICE classifies the HRF565YHS as a French-door model and records testing in 2022. Its detailed expert score, temperature results, noise result and reliability and satisfaction scores are available only to members, so there is no responsible way to assign an overall score from the public listing. Public information does confirm a three-star energy label, a claimed 490 kWh annual consumption figure, a two-year parts-and-labour warranty and discontinued status.
In short, judge a remaining unit on condition, verified warranty support, installation space and sale price rather than on the model’s age alone. The capacity and non-plumbed dispenser remain useful, but those benefits need to outweigh the footprint and energy trade-offs.

How much can the HRF565YHS hold?
The answer depends on whether the source is quoting gross capacity or a stated/claimed usable-volume convention. Haier’s Australian quick-reference guide dated 27 January 2022 separates 565 L gross capacity from 519 L of stated volume. A second Haier guide for the same model family and CHOICE’s listing allocate the full 565 L between refrigerator and freezer compartments. These numbers should not be blended into one specification.

For meal planning, the Australian guide’s 519 L stated volume is the more conservative figure because it excludes the space counted as gross capacity. The 343 L refrigerator section is suitable for a large weekly shop, while 176 L of freezer volume favours regular frozen-food storage rather than bulk chest-freezer quantities. Before buying, ask the seller which regional specification applies to the serial number and request an internal-dimension drawing if your storage containers are unusually wide or tall.

Haier lists the cabinet at 1,804 mm high, 833 mm wide and 716 mm deep. CHOICE recommends allowing approximately 1,860 mm height, 940 mm width and 770 mm depth for installation. The larger figures account for operating clearance, ventilation and practical delivery access rather than changing the cabinet’s published size.

Measure the complete route from the delivery entrance to the kitchen: gates, lift doors, hallway corners and benchtop openings can be narrower than the final cavity. Check the door-swing arc against adjacent walls and islands, and leave the manufacturer’s required ventilation space wherever the installation guide specifies it. Do not design around the cabinet width alone; the CHOICE allowance of roughly 94 cm is the safer planning number.
Will it fit under standard cabinetry?
At 1.804 m high, the cabinet may fit beneath many tall refrigerator recesses, but the recommended 1.86 m installation height can exceed a low overhead cabinet. Check the actual opening at several points because floors and cabinets are not always level. If the top clearance is marginal, confirm that the doors can open fully without striking the cabinet above.

Does the water dispenser need plumbing?
No. The HRF565YHS uses a refillable internal tank, so it does not need a water line or an installer to connect household plumbing. Haier describes it as “Non-plumbed water dispenser for easy access to cool water” and promotes “Cold water on tap.” Andoo identifies the tank capacity as 1.8 L.

You must, however, lift out and refill the tank periodically, keep it clean and allow time for newly added water to chill. It also avoids the leak risk and fixed position associated with a plumbed connection, but the tank occupies some internal space and cannot provide an unlimited flow during a large gathering.
How does its ice maker work?
The freezer has a manual twist ice maker rather than an automatic plumbed ice system. You fill the tray, freeze it and operate the twist mechanism to release the cubes into the storage area. Ice output therefore depends on each manual batch, and the refrigerator will not continuously refill or dispense ice at the door.
What storage and convenience features are included?
The feature set is aimed at organising fresh food and keeping the freezer low-maintenance rather than adding app-connected controls. The manufacturer lists the following equipment:
- DualZone™ and DryZone™: named storage zones intended to separate food types and manage the conditions in those compartments. The available guides do not publish independent temperature ranges for each mode, so treat the names as feature labels rather than promises of a particular temperature.
- Humidity-controlled crisper bins: Haier says the vegetable bin helps retain moisture to preserve the nutrition and flavours of fresh fruit and vegetables. Use the control according to the type of produce and avoid sealing wet vegetables in a way that causes condensation.
- SuperFreeze: a rapid-freezing mode for adding fresh food to the freezer. Follow the manual’s loading and duration instructions, and return to normal operation after the food is frozen.
- Frost-free freezer: automatic defrosting prevents the thick ice build-up associated with manual-defrost freezers.
- External LED display and LED interior lighting: controls and temperature information are visible without opening the doors, while LED lamps illuminate the compartments.
- Two adjustable glass shelves and six door shelves: shelf positions can be adapted to bottles, jugs and tall containers, subject to the maximum load stated in the manual.
- Door alarm: the service specification lists an alarm to warn when a door is left open.
The guides do not document Wi-Fi control, a camera, an automatic ice dispenser or a measured noise rating. Those omissions are relevant when comparing the unit with newer premium refrigerators.

How energy-hungry is it?
The HRF565YHS carries a three-star energy rating. CHOICE’s 2022 listing gives a claimed consumption of 490 kWh per year, while a Haier service-manual specification table gives 480 kWh per year. Quote the source with the figure because the two documents use different test or specification contexts; neither is a guarantee of a particular household’s bill.

To estimate running cost, multiply the applicable kWh figure by your electricity tariff; for example, a tariff expressed in dollars per kWh can be multiplied by 490 for the CHOICE figure. Actual use changes with room temperature, door openings, food load, thermostat settings, ventilation and whether SuperFreeze is used. Compare annual kWh as well as star ratings when assessing a replacement, because a larger refrigerator can consume more electricity even when its star label looks similar.
What are the warranty and service considerations?
Haier’s Australian quick-reference guide documents two years of parts and labour, plus an additional 10 years covering compressor parts. The extension is not the same as 10 years of complete refrigerator coverage: labour and other components are not automatically included after the initial period. Confirm the terms, eligible country, proof-of-purchase requirements and transferability with Haier before relying on the warranty, especially for a clearance or second-hand unit.
The service specification records a net weight of 100 kg. That affects delivery equipment, stair access and the number of people needed to move an unboxed appliance. Keep the model and serial labels, invoice and installation documentation; they make parts enquiries easier if support is required after a retailer stops carrying the product.
Can you still buy a Haier HRF565YHS?
CHOICE currently labels the model discontinued. That does not prove that every unit has disappeared: retailers may still have clearance stock, warehouse returns or used examples. Andoo has identified it as a 519 L family refrigerator and lists a 10 A plug and lead and China as the country of origin, but live stock, price and customer-review counts can change and must be checked at the time of purchase.

CHOICE recorded a historical listed price of $1,558 in its 2022 entry. Treat that as a dated reference, not a current recommended price. A low clearance price can make the HRF565YHS attractive, but ask whether the box has been opened, whether the warranty starts on your invoice date, and whether cosmetic damage or a returned status applies.
What should you verify in a remaining-stock listing?
- Exact model code HRF565YHS and the regional voltage/specification label.
- Manufacture date, unopened or display status and any transport damage.
- Written confirmation of warranty coverage and the seller’s return period.
- Availability of shelves, door bins, water-tank parts and the manual ice-maker components.
- Delivery method, stair charges, packaging removal and installation responsibility.
How should you install and set up the refrigerator?
Use the retailer’s delivery instructions and Haier’s installation manual, but the following sequence covers the decisions that commonly cause problems:
- Measure before ordering. Record the cavity, route and door-swing area, then compare them with the approximately 1,860 × 940 × 770 mm installation allowance rather than only the cabinet dimensions.
- Prepare a level, strong floor. The 100 kg net weight excludes packaging and food. Confirm that the floor can support the loaded appliance and that the front can be levelled without blocking the doors.
- Provide the correct electrical outlet. Andoo lists a 10 A plug and lead. Use a correctly earthed outlet that remains accessible without relying on an extension lead, and follow local electrical rules.
- Position for ventilation. Keep the rear, top and sides clear according to the manual. Crowding the condenser area can increase energy use and reduce cooling performance.
- Let it stand if instructed after transport. Follow Haier’s settling guidance before powering on, particularly if the appliance travelled on its side.
- Set the controls and allow cooling time. The cabinet and freezer need time to reach operating temperature before loading a full shop. Use SuperFreeze only when needed.
- Wash and fill the water tank. Rinse the 1.8 L tank, fill it with potable water and seat it correctly. Do not connect it to a water pipe.
- Test doors, alarm, dispenser and ice tray. Check that every door seals, the alarm responds, the dispenser delivers water and the manual twist tray turns freely before discarding the packaging.

How should you compare it with a newer refrigerator?
Do not compare headline litres alone. Use the same measurement convention for every model and ask for annual kWh, internal dimensions and the exact freezer allocation. A newer model may advertise a smaller gross figure but provide similar usable storage, or a larger gross figure that leaves less accessible shelf space.

Verdict: is the Haier HRF565YHS worth buying?
The HRF565YHS remains useful when its large storage layout and non-plumbed water dispenser solve a specific kitchen need. Its documented 565 L gross capacity, frost-free freezer and produce-focused storage are meaningful advantages, but the three-star rating, approximately 94 cm installation width, manual ice maker and discontinued status reduce its value at an ordinary price. Buy only after confirming the regional capacity specification, warranty terms, delivery clearances and current service support; a well-priced, supported unit can make sense, while an expensive or unsupported one is difficult to justify against newer refrigerators.
