As of October 30, 2026, DayZ is the better-evidenced choice for long-term multiplayer because it is released, playable now, supported by community-run servers and mods, and has just received the Badlands expansion. State of Decay 3 may be the better fit for a fixed group of friends who want a cooperative shared campaign, but it is still in an invitation-only closed beta and is targeting a general release in 2027. Its final balance, server model, cross-play behavior, update cadence and long-term retention are not yet known.
The choice is therefore less about which game has “more zombies” and more about what kind of multiplayer persistence you want: DayZ’s unpredictable public survival sandbox, or State of Decay 3’s planned four-person cooperative settlement campaign.

Which game is better for long-term multiplayer right now?
Choose DayZ if you want a game you can buy and start tonight, with established public and community-run servers, player-created server rules, Steam Workshop support on PC, and years of observed updates. Choose State of Decay 3 only if your priority is a cooperative campaign for a regular group of up to four people and you are willing to wait for release or obtain a beta invitation.
That verdict is deliberately date-qualified. The State of Decay 3 closed beta opened on October 13, 2026, replacing earlier descriptions of the project as being in alpha, but it is not a public launch. The developer is targeting a 2027 general release without announcing a specific day or month. Details from the beta and developer interviews describe intended systems, not a finished product that can be judged for years of reliability.

DayZ is not automatically the friendlier game. It is a harsh survival sandbox in which another player can rescue you, ignore you or shoot you. State of Decay 3 is designed around cooperation, settlement management and shared progression. For a fixed group that dislikes player-versus-player uncertainty, the unreleased game could eventually be the more comfortable long-term home; that is a design fit, not a measured retention claim.

Is State of Decay 3 out yet?
No. State of Decay 3 is not generally released. An invitation-based closed beta began October 13, 2026, and the current target is a general release in 2027. A beta invitation should not be treated as a public-beta entitlement, and there is no confirmed launch day or month to plan around.
The beta is useful evidence about the direction of the multiplayer design. It supports solo play or a group of up to four people in total. Developer descriptions say each player can independently recruit survivors, undertake missions and manage settlements rather than being permanently tethered to the host. The creative director also described players changing the same world at different times, so one person’s changes can remain for others in an asynchronous shared save.
Those are developer accounts of a test build. The beta documentation warns that dialogue, interface elements and tuning are unfinished. It does not establish final matchmaking, server uptime, progression safety, launch pricing, cross-play behavior, mod support or the quality of the 2027 release. Treat videos and interviews as design information rather than a review of the finished game.
If you need a multiplayer zombie game for a planned weekend, DayZ is the only one of these two that is reliably available without an invitation. If your group can wait, put State of Decay 3 on a watch list rather than buying hardware or subscriptions on the assumption that every promised feature will arrive unchanged.
Can four friends share one State of Decay 3 world?
The planned and beta-tested limit is four players total, including the host. The design is cooperative but deliberately less restrictive than a traditional host-only campaign: players can move around the world independently, recruit, complete missions and work on settlements.

The practical appeal is continuity between play sessions. One friend may improve a facility, another may establish an outpost and a third may handle a mission, with changes represented in the same shared save. Kevin Patzelt, the game’s creative director, summarized the intended model in an Xbox Wire interview: “In a shared world, any one of us can make changes to the world.” The statement describes the goal of a developing game, not a guarantee that every asynchronous action will be conflict-free or available at launch.
The beta material also describes a limit of three settlements. Food and water act as daily rations, facilities have operating costs, and Plague Nests can grow into a larger network. That combination gives a regular group reasons to divide responsibilities: one player can secure supplies, another can maintain facilities, and another can push back a new threat.
Four-player cooperation is not the same social experience as a DayZ server. There is no indication that State of Decay 3 will offer DayZ-style player-operated servers, a 60-player environment or open-ended encounters with strangers. Its strength, if the final implementation matches the description, will be a persistent campaign for a known group rather than a world shaped by dozens of unrelated players.
Is DayZ good with friends for the long term?
DayZ is a strong long-term choice for friends who enjoy self-directed survival and unpredictable human behavior. It does not provide a conventional quest campaign. The social loop changes every time another player enters the story. Voice-chat encounters can become trades, temporary alliances, deception or combat. A group that wants a calm cooperative experience may find this exhausting; a group that enjoys uncertainty can get more memorable stories from a single meeting than from a scripted objective.
DayZ’s publisher listing describes up to 60 players in an environment. That figure is a server description, not a promise that every server runs at that capacity or that you will constantly encounter 59 other people. Server population, location, rules and wipe schedules vary. Some communities emphasize role-play or cooperation; others encourage aggressive competition. Read each server’s rules and restart information before committing your group’s time.
The released game includes Chernarus and Livonia, and the Badlands expansion added the 267-square-kilometre Nasdara desert terrain on October 15, 2026. A larger map creates room for new routes and supply decisions, but map area alone does not prove a better multiplayer experience. The expansion’s launch also brought Update 1.30 and a full wipe across platforms, an important reminder that “persistent” means an ongoing game world, not a guarantee that every character or base survives every major update.
How do the two games keep a multiplayer session going?
State of Decay 3 uses a cooperative management loop, while DayZ uses survival pressure and emergent player interaction. The better loop depends on whether your group prefers shared planning or improvisation under threat.
State of Decay 3: settlement obligations
The beta description frames a settlement as an active system rather than a decorative home. Daily food and water rations must be supplied, facilities incur operating costs, and survivor recruitment expands the tasks your community can perform. Outposts extend your reach, while a growing network of Plague Nests increases pressure on the map. With up to three settlements, the group must decide where to invest resources and how much territory it can safely maintain.
This structure should suit groups that like roles and routines. You can log in with a plan—repair a facility, restock rations, recruit a specialist or clear a nest—and see how the shared state changes. The risk is that routine maintenance can feel like administration if the final tuning makes costs too demanding or missions too repetitive. Because the game is unreleased, there is no reliable long-term evidence about how quickly that loop becomes stale.
DayZ: scarcity and unscripted risk
DayZ’s pressure comes from keeping a character alive. Food, water, medical supplies, clothing and weapons are scarce; disease and injury can end a run; crafting and base-building create longer-term projects. The absence of missions means your group must set its own priorities, and other players can overturn them without warning.
A successful evening might involve finding antibiotics and never firing a shot. It might also end seconds after a careful journey when another survivor spots your vehicle. That volatility is the content. It can produce a stronger sense of personal history than a checklist, but it also makes progress less predictable and can punish a friend who joins late or loses a character.

Which game offers more variety over months and years?
DayZ currently offers the more demonstrable variety because its server and mod ecosystem already exists. State of Decay 3 proposes a different kind of variety—multiple settlements, shared progression and changing Plague Nest pressure—but its post-launch ecosystem cannot yet be observed.
DayZ recognizes community-run servers, and PC players have access to a Steam Workshop ecosystem. Servers can alter rules, available content and the social tone of a session. That means “playing DayZ” is not one fixed experience: an official server, a lightly modified community server and a heavily customized PC server can demand different habits. Console players should not assume that PC Workshop content or every server modification is available on their platform.

Community variety also has costs. A server can shut down, change administrators, wipe unexpectedly or adopt rules your group dislikes. Mods can conflict after an update, and a popular server may have queues. Check the server’s current rules, restart schedule, required mods and wipe policy before building a long-term base there.
State of Decay 3’s proposed variety is more controlled. The beta materials point to up to three settlements and a shared save that can be changed asynchronously. The developer has not promised PC mods on console, DayZ-style player-operated servers or any particular post-launch content cadence. Do not buy it on the assumption that those systems will appear later.

One developer estimate says the State of Decay 3 playable space is about four times the size of one State of Decay 2 map. That is a useful indication of ambition, but it is not an independently measured comparison with DayZ and does not predict how much meaningful activity the larger space will contain.
Do DayZ and State of Decay 3 preserve your progress permanently?
No. Neither game should be treated as a guarantee that a base, character or shared world will survive every update. DayZ has an explicit recent example: Bohemia announced a full wipe across platforms alongside Update 1.30 and the Badlands launch.
A wipe can reset characters, bases, inventories or other server data even when the game itself is designed around persistence. Before investing weeks in a DayZ base, read the specific server’s wipe policy and the publisher’s update notes. Community servers may have schedules that differ from official servers, and a major technical change can force an unplanned reset.
State of Decay 3’s shared-save model is described as persistent across players’ sessions, including changes made asynchronously. That explains how the feature is intended to work during the beta; it does not demonstrate post-launch reliability, backup behavior, rollback tools or what happens when a host leaves. Wait for final documentation before treating the shared save as an archival campaign.

Which platforms support each game, and is there cross-play?
Both games are associated with PC, Xbox and PlayStation releases, but a multi-platform listing is not evidence of cross-play. State of Decay 3 is listed for Xbox, PC and PlayStation, with Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere mentioned in its platform information. DayZ is available on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and the Badlands expansion launched on all three platform families.
Do not promise that an Xbox player can join a PlayStation player, that a PC player can join a console server or that saves transfer between platforms. Cross-play, cross-progression, regional matchmaking and access to community servers can differ by platform and may change before launch. Confirm the final support matrix in the official release notes before buying copies for a mixed-platform group.
DayZ’s PC Steam Workshop ecosystem is another platform distinction. A console player may be able to join official or approved community servers, but should not expect the same mod library or configuration options as a PC player. State of Decay 3’s eventual mod policy is not established by the beta descriptions.

Does DayZ have private or community servers?
DayZ supports community-run servers, but “private server” can mean several different things. A rented or administrator-managed server may have a password, a whitelist, custom rules or scheduled wipes. Other community servers are public but still differ from official servers in settings and moderation.
Before choosing one, check whether it allows base-building, how often it wipes, whether it requires PC mods, how administrators handle cheating and whether the server is hosted in a region that gives your group acceptable latency. A private password does not automatically mean permanent uptime or protected progress.
State of Decay 3 has not been announced as offering the same player-operated server model. Its shared-world design is a cooperative save for a small group, not evidence of dedicated public servers. Keep those concepts separate when planning a long-term community.

Neither number is today’s active population, and expansion sales are not a measure of retention. They do show that the released game has a substantial, observable update cycle—something State of Decay 3 cannot yet demonstrate.
Badlands does not make DayZ a cooperative campaign or remove the possibility of hostile players. It strengthens the case for DayZ as the available long-term platform because there is current content, an operating community and documented post-launch maintenance. Decide whether the expansion’s desert setting and wipe timing suit your group before purchasing it.

The planned player limit, independent movement and settlement systems are aimed at a stable friend group. You can divide work, return to the same save and build a community rather than constantly negotiating with strangers.
However, that recommendation is conditional on release quality. The beta is invitation-only, the release is targeted for 2027, and the final server and progression details are unknown. A group that needs a game immediately should not substitute promises for availability.
Choose DayZ when your group wants a released game and accepts that cooperation is optional. You can travel together, share supplies and build a base, but another player can disrupt all of it. The game rewards communication and caution more than a fixed division of campaign roles. It is especially suitable for friends who enjoy telling stories about unexpected encounters rather than completing a designed sequence of missions.
For a group split across PC and consoles, postpone the purchase decision until each game’s final cross-play rules are confirmed. Platform labels alone do not answer whether everyone can enter the same world.

Which game should solo players choose?
State of Decay 3’s beta supports solo play, but its most distinctive proposition is the shared world. If you play alone, you may still enjoy settlement upkeep, survivor recruitment and Plague Nest pressure, yet you will not be using the four-person design that most clearly separates it from DayZ.
DayZ can be played alone, but solitude is a risk-management choice rather than a separate campaign mode. - Choose your social risk. Pick DayZ for encounters with unknown players and possible PvP. Pick State of Decay 3 for a planned group of up to four, assuming the final game preserves the beta design.
- Choose your source of variety. DayZ’s variety comes from servers, mods, updates and player behavior. State of Decay 3’s proposed variety comes from settlements, shared progression and escalating threats.
- Check persistence expectations. Read DayZ server wipe policies. For State of Decay 3, wait for final information about shared-save resets and hosting.
- Verify platform compatibility. Confirm cross-play and cross-progression for your exact platforms rather than inferring them from a store listing.

State of Decay 3 is the more promising specialized choice for a four-person cooperative group, not the more proven one.
