For a lightweight newsletter, start with Listmonk; for complex behavioral journeys, consider Mautic; for a mature list manager, look at phpList. Sendy can suit an operator willing to pay for a proprietary application and use Amazon SES, while MailWizz targets commercial campaign operations. SendPortal, Dada Mail and NuevoMailer round out the eight options, but their current maintenance, terms or pricing should be checked before you commit. Self-hosting does not eliminate email-delivery costs or operational work: you remain responsible for the server, updates, bounce handling and sender reputation.
What should you choose for your email marketing workload?
These tools are not interchangeable. Some primarily manage newsletters and subscriber lists; others aim to support broader automation; Sendy is commonly used as an application layer around an external delivery service. The best choice depends on whether you need a straightforward announcement workflow, a scalable newsletter sender, or campaigns that react to subscriber behavior.

- Fast, focused newsletters: Listmonk is the clearest fit when a small operational footprint matters and PostgreSQL is acceptable.
- Complex marketing automation: Mautic is the open-source option to consider when journeys and automation graphs justify greater infrastructure complexity.
- Modern AGPL newsletter workflow: Keila is worth considering alongside the eight products in this comparison.
- Long-lived or nonprofit lists: phpList is positioned as a mature list manager.
- AWS-based sending with a paid application: Sendy may suit teams comfortable with a proprietary license and Amazon SES dependency.
For any new deployment, confirm current release activity, license terms, support arrangements and delivery-provider compatibility before choosing. Those details can change, and a platform being self-hosted does not by itself establish that it is actively maintained or suitable for your sending volume.
How do the eight platforms differ?
The useful distinction is the product model: list manager, automation suite, or delivery-service wrapper. The descriptions below reflect the product positions documented in Geekflare’s comparison updated August 17, 2026, and the accompanying product notes. Where a current license, price or maintenance status is not established, verify it with the vendor before deployment.

Geekflare’s eight-product review names Sendy, MailWizz, phpList, Listmonk, Mautic, SendPortal, Dada Mail and NuevoMailer. It also includes OpenEMM and Octeth in a broader comparison. This article keeps the eight-product frame but adds Keila as an alternative because a shortlist should account for newer open-source newsletter options too.

Listmonk is a focused option for teams that want to run a self-hosted newsletter manager without adopting a broad automation suite. Its official documentation describes it as a “self-hosted, high performance one-way mailing list and newsletter manager.” It is a standalone binary, and PostgreSQL is its only dependency, which keeps the stated application footprint comparatively small.
Listmonk is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 (AGPLv3). The official site lists binary and Docker installation paths. As of October 26, 2026, it reports v7.0.0-beta.1, released October 20, 2026. That is a beta release: evaluate whether you want a beta channel or a stable version before using it for business-critical sending.
Choose it when newsletter and one-way list sending are the main job and your team can operate PostgreSQL, maintain a server and configure delivery. If you need automation centered on complex behavior-based journeys, assess Mautic rather than assuming a newsletter manager offers the same depth.
When does Mautic make more sense than a lightweight list manager?
Mautic is the better candidate when your campaign design depends on behavioral journeys and automation graphs, rather than primarily on sending newsletters to lists. The reviewed comparisons position it as the deepest automation option among the open-source choices here.
That capability has an operational trade-off: Mautic is not the pick for a team whose overriding goal is the smallest, simplest installation. Choose it only when the automation is valuable enough to justify additional infrastructure and ongoing administration. The available product notes do not establish a specific current deployment specification or feature-by-feature comparison, so validate requirements against the current project documentation before planning a production server.
Which alternatives fit established lists or specialized workflows?
phpList for long-lived lists
phpList is presented as a mature open-source list manager, particularly relevant to nonprofit organizations and environments that already have established list workflows. Its longevity can matter when continuity is more important than adopting a newer interface, but it is not evidence that every integration or current requirement is covered. Check your needed migration path and maintenance expectations before moving a live list.
Keila for a modern AGPL newsletter workflow
Keila is an additional option beyond the eight-product review: it is described as a modern, EU-origin AGPL newsletter product with moderate automation and a relatively small operational footprint. That makes it a reasonable candidate if you want more than a bare list manager but do not need the deeper automation positioning associated with Mautic. The product notes do not establish current pricing, release status or exact deployment requirements, so verify those details directly before selecting it.
Rank #3
Dada Mail for announcement-list use
Dada Mail is aimed at straightforward mailing-list management, particularly announcement lists. Comparison coverage says it can run on ordinary shared hosting, which may appeal to an operator who does not want to provision a dedicated application server. Shared hosting does not remove the need to check email-sending limits, bounce processing and the host’s acceptable-use terms.
When are Sendy, MailWizz, SendPortal or NuevoMailer worth considering?
Sendy when Amazon SES is part of the plan
Sendy is proprietary and is commonly used as a thin application wrapper for Amazon SES. That can reduce application expense for an AWS user who accepts a one-time software license, but the deployment still depends on SES and on infrastructure the operator manages. It is not a way to avoid configuring a delivery service.
MailWizz for agency or larger campaign operations
MailWizz is a commercial self-hosted platform positioned for agencies and larger campaign workloads. Its audience may value a commercial product model, but current license terms and support arrangements need verification before purchase. Do not assume that a past one-time or recurring price applies today.
SendPortal when Laravel fits your stack
SendPortal is described as a free, open-source sender built with Laravel and offering a modern interface. That stack can be a natural fit for teams already comfortable operating Laravel applications. Maintenance activity should be checked before ranking it highly or relying on it for a new production system.
Rank #4
NuevoMailer for a small-business use case
NuevoMailer is described as a proprietary application for small businesses with a one-time license. Current pricing and support are not established here, so confirm both, along with the product’s maintenance status, before treating the license model as a cost advantage.
What does self-hosted email marketing really cost?
Self-hosting usually replaces a subscriber-based platform bill with a mix of server, software and delivery expenses; it does not make sending free. A 2026 comparison gives a market estimate of roughly $5 to $20 per month for hosting and about $0.10 per 1,000 emails for Amazon SES. These are dated estimates, not guaranteed quotes: actual cost depends on the provider, region, account, workload and current pricing.
Geekflare’s August 17, 2026 comparison estimates that a typical hosted platform may cost $150 to $300 per month for a list of 50,000 subscribers. That figure is an estimate for a typical hosted platform, not a universal market price or a direct like-for-like comparison. A self-hosted setup may have a small VPS bill plus software licensing, but labor for installation, patching, monitoring and deliverability also belongs in the total cost.
- Infrastructure: VPS or other hosting, storage, backups and any additional services required by the chosen application.
- Software: free/open-source licensing for some choices, or a paid license for proprietary products. Confirm current terms; the notes do not establish current prices for the commercial products.
- Sending: a relay or delivery service, such as SES in Sendy’s common deployment pattern, with charges that vary by provider and usage.
- Operations: staff time for updates, uptime, security, suppression lists, bounce handling and sender reputation.
Compare a realistic monthly bill and staff workload against the hosted alternative you would otherwise use. A low VPS price is not the full cost of a reliable sending operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat work stays with you after installation?
Self-hosting transfers control of the application and its infrastructure to you, but it also transfers routine responsibility. Geekflare’s August 17, 2026 article warns that “self-hosting means you’re the one responsible for installation, security patches, uptime, and setup.” In email marketing, setup includes the delivery and list-management tasks that determine whether campaigns can be sent responsibly and reliably.
- Install and patch: deploy the application and dependencies, monitor updates, and apply security fixes.
- Keep the service available: monitor uptime, maintain backups and plan recovery for the application and its database.
- Configure sender authentication: set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the sending domain.
- Operate delivery: configure a relay, handle bounces and maintain suppressions so recipients who should not receive further mail are excluded.
- Protect reputation: monitor the sending IP and domain reputation; software choice alone cannot guarantee inbox placement.
Before launch, confirm that your chosen application can work with the relay you intend to use and that you have a procedure for bounce and suppression processing. The application, host and delivery provider form one operational system; a failure or misconfiguration in any part can interrupt campaigns.
How should you check maintenance and freshness before choosing?
Check release history and current support rather than relying on a product’s presence in an older comparison. Mailtrain is the clearest caution in the reviewed 2026 comparison: it reports a last release in June 2021 and a last commit in December 2022, and recommends the product mainly for existing installations. That history makes it a poor default for a new deployment unless you independently establish that its present state meets your needs.
The same freshness check is worthwhile for SendPortal, NuevoMailer and any other product whose current maintenance, support or license terms are not established here. Before migrating a list, check the latest release, installation documentation, security advisories and a tested export path. Treat version labels carefully: Listmonk’s v7.0.0-beta.1, reported on October 20, 2026, is explicitly a beta release rather than an unqualified stable-version recommendation.

How do you choose and deploy the right platform?
- Define the campaign job. Decide whether you need one-way newsletters and list management, behavior-driven automation, or a thin interface over an external sender.
- Set the operating boundary. Identify who will patch the application, manage its database, monitor uptime and respond to sending problems. If no one owns those duties, self-hosting is not operationally ready.
- Choose the delivery path. Select the relay or sending service and confirm that the application supports the configuration you plan to use. Budget for delivery separately from the server.
- Verify product status and terms. Check current release activity, stable versus beta versions, commercial license terms, support and deployment requirements with the project or vendor.
- Test the full workflow before migration. Validate authentication, campaign delivery, bounce processing and suppression behavior with a controlled test before sending to an established list.
- Calculate total cost. Include software, hosting, relay charges and ongoing labor; compare that with the hosted service you would otherwise pay for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is self-hosted email marketing software always open source?
No. The category includes open-source projects as well as proprietary or commercial applications. Sendy and NuevoMailer are described as proprietary, and MailWizz as commercial, so check the license and usage terms rather than inferring them from the fact that software runs on your server.
Can self-hosted email marketing guarantee that messages reach the inbox?
No guarantee is established by the software choice. Delivery also depends on authentication, bounce and suppression handling, the relay configuration, and sender reputation—responsibilities that remain with the operator.
Should I install Mailtrain for a new mailing list?
The reviewed 2026 comparison reports its last release in June 2021 and last commit in December 2022, and recommends it mainly for existing installations. For a new system, check its current project activity and security status before relying on it.
