For PS2 games on an iPhone, choose a controller only after confirming how the game will run. The least complicated documented route is to stream a PS2-era game that has a PS4 release from a compatible PlayStation console using Remote Play; a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 is the clearest-documented controller choice. A USB-C telescopic pad such as the Razer Kishi V3 may be more comfortable to hold, but Sony’s listed iOS compatibility guidance does not specifically confirm that model. A controller alone cannot make an original PS2 disc or any PS2 game file run on an iPhone.

There is no universal winner: the game route, iPhone connector, app compatibility and whether you already own a controller matter more than the controller’s label. The table reflects manufacturer and platform documentation available as of Nov 2026, not comparative latency or performance testing.

Can I play PS2 games on my iPhone with a controller?

Sometimes, but not simply by connecting a controller. First establish a playable game route: Remote Play streams a supported game running on a PS4 or PS5, while local emulation is a separate, more technical option.

A PS2 disc inserted nowhere near the iPhone does not become a phone game when a controller is paired. Nor does owning a disc automatically provide a usable game image for an emulator. Keep the controller decision separate from the question of whether the specific game can run.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

In practical terms, there are two different questions: “Can this controller connect to my iPhone?” and “Can I play this particular PS2-origin game on the iPhone?” A “yes” to the first does not answer the second. Decide on the game and route before ordering an accessory, especially if you are considering a controller designed to attach directly to the phone.

Route 1: Stream a PS2-era game reissued for PlayStation

A PS2-origin title may have a later PS4 release that can be played on a compatible console and streamed to iPhone with Sony’s PS Remote Play app. Sony’s US listing identifies Ape Escape 2 as originally released on PS2 and offered in PS4 format with PlayStation Plus Premium access. That is an example of a reissue, not proof that every PS2 game is available or that a PS2 disc works in a PS5. Check the current catalog, region and subscription entitlement for the title you want. Sony’s mobile Remote Play guidance explains supported mobile play.

Sony’s PS5 manual excludes PS2-format software on disc. Remote Play sends the console’s supported game to the phone; it does not make the iPhone read or run the original disc. An original PS2 disc and a later digital or disc release made for another PlayStation generation are different products with different compatibility rules. Confirm the exact edition and where it runs, rather than relying on a title’s name alone.

This route is often the more straightforward one if you already have a compatible console and access to the specific game version. It is not a way to turn every PS2 game into a Remote Play title: the game must first be playable on the console. Subscription eligibility and catalog availability can also change, so verify those details for the title and region before paying.

Route 2: Local iOS emulation

The Play! project describes itself as a PS2 emulator for iOS, but its own README says its iOS build uses just-in-time compilation (JIT), has additional setup requirements and will crash when launching a game without JIT. The project’s download page provides iOS builds outside an ordinary App Store installation. Before choosing this route, verify that you can install the build, enable an authorized and feasible JIT method, and confirm the particular game and controller work in that setup. The documentation does not establish that every iPhone, game or installation method will work. Read the Play! project README for its own requirements and warning.

That JIT requirement is a material part of the decision, not a minor configuration detail: the project warns, “If you try to play a game without JIT enabled, you will experience a crash when you launch the game.” Treat installation and JIT feasibility as prerequisites to testing controller fit. A controller cannot resolve a launch crash, make an unsupported game compatible, or provide the emulator itself.

Do not infer that RetroArch runs PS2 games on iPhone from separate listings for its iOS app and a port that runs on a PS2 console. Those are not evidence of an iOS PS2-emulation core. Likewise, this guide does not recommend downloading copyrighted game files or suggest that owning a disc automatically gives you a phone-ready image. Establish a lawful, workable game source and the emulator’s actual requirements before proceeding.

Which controller alternatives make sense for Remote Play?

For Sony’s documented iOS Remote Play support, start with a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4. If you already own one, it may be all you need; otherwise, an iPhone-gripping USB-C controller is a comfort and portability choice that still requires checking compatibility with the app.

Sony’s mobile support document says, “You can connect a DualSense® wireless controller, DualSense Edge™ wireless controller or DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller to supported mobile devices.” That explicit listing is why these are lower-uncertainty suggestions for Remote Play than a third-party model whose manufacturer advertises streaming generally. It is still necessary to check that the iPhone and current app meet their requirements.

DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4

Sony specifically names all three wireless controllers for supported mobile devices. That makes them the lower-uncertainty choice when the intended app is PS Remote Play. Sony’s documentation supports the controller connection claim; it does not mean a controller adds unsupported games to the console catalog or changes what a PS5 can play from disc. See Sony’s mobile controller guidance for its supported-controller wording.

Choose among them based on what you already have and the physical controls you prefer. There is no sourced latency comparison here that would justify ranking one as faster for Remote Play. If a compatible Sony pad is already in your home, try it before buying another device. You may need to hold the phone separately or use a mount, but that is a physical setup choice rather than proof of app compatibility.

Can you use a PS5 controller instead? Yes: Sony lists the DualSense and DualSense Edge for supported mobile devices. A PS5 controller does not make the PS5 play an original PS2-format disc, however. It only supplies input to a game that is otherwise playable through the console and app.

Backbone One PlayStation Edition

This telescopic option holds the phone between controller grips rather than requiring a separate phone mount. Backbone’s product FAQ specifies a USB-C version for iPhone 15 and newer and a Lightning version for iPhone 14 and earlier, subject to supported software. Match the connector to the phone rather than assuming all iPhones use the same model. Backbone also says a thick case can prevent the connector from engaging.

Backbone says its optional Backbone+ subscription is not required simply to play compatible games. That does not itself confirm that a particular game or app works with the controller: check the intended app’s compatibility and the phone’s software before buying. Consider whether you want a controller physically attached to the phone, and whether the model’s connector and case fit are practical for your device.

Razer Kishi V3

The Razer Kishi V3 is a USB-C handheld alternative: Razer describes larger grips, full-sized sticks, USB-C connectivity and pass-through charging, and says it supports iPhone 15-series and newer models. Those details can matter if you want the phone held in the controller and prefer a larger grip to a conventional pad plus mount. For shoppers looking specifically for a Razer Kishi V3 iPhone USB-C controller, the important checks are model support, connector fit and app recognition—not just the USB-C plug.

Razer presents streaming as a use case, but Sony’s reviewed iOS Remote Play instructions do not specifically certify Kishi V3. Treat its Remote Play support as something to verify with the intended app, not a guarantee. A USB-C plug fitting the phone is not, by itself, proof that an app recognizes every controller function. If Remote Play recognition is the deciding factor, a Sony-listed controller is the more directly documented choice.

Other Bluetooth controllers

Apple documents pairing PlayStation, Xbox and other compatible Bluetooth controllers with iPhone. The iOS Remote Play listing displays a compatible PlayStation, Xbox or MFi controller badge, while Apple cautions that feature support varies by controller and app. A standard Bluetooth pad trades the built-in phone grip for flexibility; a separate phone mount is optional and does not guarantee compatibility.

Apple’s Bluetooth instructions can help pair a controller, but pairing is only one checkpoint. Confirm that the intended game app supports the connected controller and that the controls you need are available in that app. If you already own a compatible Bluetooth pad, trying it first can avoid an unnecessary purchase; if you do not, compare the total setup you prefer, including whether you want a mount.

What should I check before buying?

Confirm the game route and phone first, then compare controller fit and support. That order prevents spending on a controller that cannot solve the real problem—an unavailable game, an incompatible console setup or an emulator installation the phone cannot use.

  1. Name the exact game. Check whether it is playable on your PS4 or PS5, including whether the version is a PS2-origin game reissued for a later console. If the plan is emulation, check the chosen game’s compatibility with the emulator rather than assuming a disc or file will work.
  2. Identify the iPhone and iOS version. Connector type matters for telescopic controllers, and app installation requirements can change. The live US App Store listing for PS Remote Play says iOS 16 or later; an older general Sony support page says iOS 14 or later. Use the current app listing for the installation minimum rather than combining those figures into one requirement.
  3. Decide whether you will stream or emulate. Streaming needs a compatible PlayStation console and the game running on it. Local Play! emulation has separate installation and JIT prerequisites; establish those before shopping for an input device.
  4. Check the controller against the actual app. Sony names DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 for supported mobile devices. For an unlisted model, including Kishi V3, verify support with the app you plan to use. A successful Bluetooth pairing or physical USB-C connection is not the same as confirmed in-game support.
  5. Compare the physical connection. For a telescopic pad, match USB-C or Lightning to the iPhone and account for any case that affects connector engagement. For a conventional Bluetooth controller, decide whether holding the phone separately is acceptable.
  6. Check the source and entitlement for the game. On the console route, make sure the exact edition is currently playable on your console and that any subscription access required for it applies to your account and region. On the emulation route, check installation and game compatibility independently; do not assume that physical ownership alone supplies a usable phone image.

Before placing an order, it is useful to answer four questions in one pass: Which exact game? Which iPhone model and iOS version? Which route—console streaming or local emulation? Which controller does the intended app document? If any answer is uncertain, resolve it before treating a controller as the solution.

What does Remote Play require from the console and network?

Remote Play needs the game to be playable on the console and a network connection between console and iPhone. Sony says broadband should be at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience; these are Sony’s published connection requirements, not controller-latency measurements. Sony’s pages do not state a publication year for those figures; they were verified in 2026. Check Sony’s Remote Play page for current service details.

For the Sony route, enable Remote Play on the console, install the iOS app, sign in with the same PlayStation account, and connect a supported controller. Mobile-data use may incur carrier charges. Network requirements describe the streaming service; they do not establish that a given controller is compatible or promise a particular playing experience.

A useful setup order is to confirm the game launches on the console first, then enable Remote Play, install the current iOS app, sign in to the same PlayStation account and connect the controller. That separates console or account issues from controller questions. Once the route is working, check that the app recognizes the controls you intend to use. The 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation address the service connection, not a measured response time for a controller.

How should I choose between a Sony pad and a telescopic controller?

Choose based on documented app support, whether you already own a controller and how you want to hold the phone—not on an unsupported claim that one device is universally best.

  • Already own a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4: try the documented Sony controller route before buying another pad.
  • Want the phone attached to the controls: compare Backbone One PlayStation Edition and Kishi V3 by iPhone connector, model support, case fit and the specific app’s compatibility.
  • Want flexibility across devices or already own a Bluetooth pad: check Apple’s pairing guidance and the app’s controller support; add a phone mount only if the separate-phone arrangement suits you.
  • Planning to emulate locally: solve the emulator installation, JIT and game-compatibility questions first. A controller purchase does not remove those requirements.

Prices are not included because the cited product and platform information does not establish current prices. Availability and catalog access can vary, so confirm the live listing and entitlement before purchasing a subscription or accessory. Product names used here are comparison terms, not confirmation of a current store listing or special offer.

How were these alternatives selected?

The options are organized by the strength of documented iOS controller support and by practical differences that affect an iPhone setup. Sony’s listed controllers are separated from third-party and general Bluetooth alternatives because the cited Sony guidance does not specifically certify every accessory. Connector, grip, charging and case considerations are included only where the manufacturer information establishes them. No comparative controller latency, universal compatibility or hands-on performance claim is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Backbone+ to play compatible games with Backbone One?

No. Backbone says its optional Backbone+ subscription is not required simply to play compatible games. Whether a particular game or app supports the controller remains a separate check.

Can I use a phone case with a telescopic iPhone controller?

It depends on the case and controller fit. Backbone says a thick case can prevent its connector from engaging, so check the product’s fit guidance and be prepared to remove the case if needed.

Will the iPhone Remote Play app work on iOS 14?

The current US App Store listing says iOS 16 or later, while an older general Sony support page says iOS 14 or later. For installing the current app, follow the live App Store requirement for your region.

Can I use my PS5 controller to play PS2 games on an iPhone?

A DualSense or DualSense Edge is among the controllers Sony names for supported mobile devices. It can provide input for a supported Remote Play session, but it does not make an original PS2 disc playable on a PS5 or iPhone. The specific game must have a compatible console route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a USB-C controller work with PS Remote Play?

A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee that the app recognizes the controller. Sony names DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 for supported mobile devices; for a third-party model such as Kishi V3, verify recognition with the intended app and iPhone before buying.

Does RetroArch play PS2 games on iPhone?

Separate RetroArch listings for iOS and for a port running on the PS2 console do not establish that an iOS PS2-emulation core is available. Do not treat those listings as proof of PS2 gameplay on iPhone.

Can I play an original PS2 disc through Remote Play?

No. Remote Play streams a game running on a compatible PlayStation console; it does not make the iPhone read a PS2 disc. Sony’s PS5 manual also excludes PS2-format software on disc. Check whether the particular title has a later console version.

How fast does my internet need to be for Remote Play?

Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. Those figures are service connection requirements, not controller-latency measurements. Mobile-data use may incur charges.

The Bottom Line

First verify that your exact game has a workable route: a compatible console release for Remote Play, or a feasible local emulator setup with its JIT requirements. For Remote Play, Sony documents DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4; if you want a telescopic controller, match the iPhone connector and confirm app support before buying. A controller is only the input device—it cannot turn an original PS2 disc or any game file into a playable iPhone title.
