If your child sent money to an online scammer, stay calm, stop all further contact and payments, and call the company that moved the money immediately. Ask your child privately what they were told, which account supplied the funds, whether anyone else initiated a transfer, and whether passwords, codes, identification or device access were shared. Save the messages and transaction records before blocking the scammer. A refund is sometimes possible, but it depends on the payment method and on whether the child or the scammer actually initiated the transfer; a minor’s age and the word “scam” do not automatically make a payment unauthorized.
What should I do first?
Use a quiet, non-blaming approach so your child can give you the complete timeline. The immediate priorities are stopping the loss, preserving evidence and reaching the correct financial provider while a reversal may still be possible.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Reassure your child and ask for facts. Ask what the person promised or threatened, how much was sent, when it happened, which account or card was used, whether there were repeat payments, and whether any password, one-time code, identity document or device access was provided. The FBI tells exploited children and families, “You are not alone, and this is not your fault.”
- Stop the conversation and do not pay again. Do not negotiate, argue or send a fee to “unlock” a refund. Preserve the conversation, profile and payment details first; then block and report the account through the platform.
- Contact the payment provider through a trusted route. Use the number printed on a card, the provider’s official app or a website address you already know—not contact information supplied by the stranger. Explain precisely who authorized the transaction and ask about a stop, recall, reversal, refund or dispute review. Request a case number and write down the date, representative and response.
- Secure exposed accounts and devices. Change any shared password and every account that reused it, turn on two-factor authentication, and update and scan a device if the scammer accessed it.
- Escalate threats immediately. If the scam involved threats, sexual images, imminent harm or an in-person meeting, prioritize the child’s safety and contact local emergency services or police as appropriate.
The Federal Trade Commission says prompt contact with the company that handled the payment is worth trying even though a provider may be unable to reverse it.
Can we get the money back?
Possibly, but there is no universal “scam refund” rule. The outcome turns on the payment rail, whose account supplied the funds, who initiated the electronic transfer, how quickly you reported it and what records remain.

An electronic fund transfer can be legally “unauthorized” when a fraudster obtained access credentials and initiated the transfer without authority. That is different from a child personally sending a payment after believing a false story. A payment from a parent-owned account is not automatically unauthorized merely because the sender was a minor or exceeded a household spending limit. Give the provider a truthful, precise timeline rather than labeling every event unauthorized.
For a qualifying unauthorized transfer, federal rules can provide investigation and liability procedures. Those rules do not promise provisional credit or a refund for every payment induced by deception. If a provider rejects an unauthorized-transfer claim, ask for the information it used in reaching that decision.

Contact the institution that actually moved or funded the money. Make the call as soon as possible and keep the case number.
| Payment method | First contact and request | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer or Zelle | Call the bank or credit union immediately; ask whether the transfer can be reversed or recalled. | Do not describe every bank transfer as an unauthorized debit. State whether your child or another person initiated it. |
| Payment app, such as Venmo, Cash App or PayPal | Use the app’s current official support and report the transaction, requesting reversal. If a linked card or bank account funded it, contact that institution too. | Never use a support number sent by the scammer. |
| Credit or debit card | Notify the issuer or bank, identify the transaction and ask about a refund or dispute. | Unauthorized-use protections are distinct from a promise to refund a purchase the cardholder made after being deceived. |
| Wire transfer | Contact the sending bank or wire-transfer company at once; describe the scam and request a recall or refund. | A recall is not assured, especially after the recipient has collected the funds. |
| Gift card | Call the issuer using the number on the card. Report the card number and PIN as used in a scam, request a refund and retain the card and purchase receipt. | Do not send a replacement code or pay a fee to recover the balance. |
| Cryptocurrency | Contact the exchange or cryptocurrency ATM operator and ask whether anything can be stopped or reversed. | The FTC cautions that recovery is difficult and crypto does not have the same protections as credit or debit cards. |
| Cash sent by mail | Contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service or the carrier promptly about possible package interception. | Provide the mailing date, tracking information and destination. |
How do I document and report the scam?
Create one folder, digital or paper, and keep the originals. Documentation helps the financial provider, investigators and any later dispute without requiring your child to repeatedly retell the event.
- Payment confirmations, receipts, transaction IDs, dates, amounts and the account or card used.
- The recipient’s name, username, phone number, email, wallet address, profile URL and any linked account details.
- Chat history, emails, texts, voicemails, screenshots and the exact threats or promises.
- Notes showing when you contacted each provider, the case number, the representative’s response and any requested follow-up.
Report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For cyber-enabled fraud, you can also file with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). IC3 accepts a filing made on another person’s behalf, but its online form does not accept evidence attachments; retain the originals securely and include the requested transaction and suspected-offender details in the form.

When a child is sexually exploited, file with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline and contact law enforcement. IC3 is not a substitute for the CyberTipline in that situation. A report creates a record and can help investigators; it is not a guaranteed reimbursement channel.
What if the scammer threatened to release intimate images?
Financially motivated sextortion is an emergency child-safety issue, not merely a payment dispute. Predators may threaten to distribute sexual images unless a child pays, and the FBI warns that some distribute images even after payment.
- Tell your child to stop replying and never send another payment.
- Save messages, usernames, profile links, payment records and threats. Do not delete the account or conversation until the relevant evidence is preserved.
- Report the account through its platform, report the exploitation to NCMEC’s CyberTipline and notify law enforcement. Call emergency services if there is an immediate threat to the child’s safety.
- Ask about NCMEC’s free Take It Down service if the material is nude, partially nude or sexually explicit and was made when the person was under 18. The service can help restrict sharing on participating public or unencrypted platforms. Do not download, forward or circulate an image to submit it.
Keep the child physically safe and supported while reports are made. Do not blame them for responding to a threat or for believing a fabricated story.
What information might the scammer have taken?
A payment alone does not prove that malware was installed or that an identity was stolen. Take targeted steps based on what your child actually disclosed.
If a password or verification code was shared
Change the affected password and every reused password from a clean device. Enable two-factor authentication on email, banking, payment and social accounts, and review recent sign-ins, recovery addresses and trusted devices. A verification code can let an intruder bypass a password, so changing only the password may be insufficient.

If the scammer accessed a phone or computer
Disconnect the device from sensitive accounts long enough to change credentials from another trusted device. Install available operating-system and security updates, then run the device’s security scan. Ask the provider about account recovery if the scammer changed a password or recovery method.
If the child’s identifying information was misused
Use the child-specific recovery process at IdentityTheft.gov. That process can guide families through fraudulent-account closure and identity-theft steps. A credit report or freeze may be relevant when an account was opened in the child’s name, but do not assume a payment by itself means a credit file was created.
How can we avoid a second scam?
After a reported loss, families are often targeted by people claiming they can recover the money. An unsolicited “recovery agent” who demands an upfront fee, remote access, passwords, one-time codes or identity documents is another likely scam. No paid recovery service is an official prerequisite for contacting a bank, filing a report or using NCMEC’s free services.
Explain the warning signs without turning the conversation into punishment:

- An unexpected request that demands secrecy or says there is no time to ask an adult.
- Pressure to use gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or a payment app.
- A request for a password, verification code, identity document or remote device access.
- A promise of easy money, a fake emergency, a romantic relationship or a threat that grows when the child hesitates.
Practice a simple rule: pause, do not pay or share a code, save the message and bring it to a trusted adult. The FTC’s parent guidance emphasizes teaching children to pause and ask for help rather than expecting them to recognize every new script.

Should I buy a security key now?
Only consider a physical security key later, and only for an account that supports key-based two-factor authentication. It can strengthen future account access but cannot reverse a transfer, retrieve a gift-card balance or replace immediate reporting and password changes. First use the account’s available free authentication options and complete the provider’s recovery process.
What should I say to the bank or app?
Use a factual script so the provider can classify the event correctly:
“On [date], $[amount] moved from [account/card] to [recipient]. My child [did/did not] initiate the transaction. A person using [channel] made these claims or threats: [brief description]. We contacted you at [time]. Please open the appropriate fraud or dispute review, tell me whether a stop or recall is possible, and give me the case number and required documents.”

What should I do after the immediate report?
Keep the case number, receipts and provider correspondence together. Follow up through the provider’s official channel if it requests a written statement or additional records, and record every response. Continue monitoring the affected bank, card and payment accounts for additional transfers, and review account alerts and recovery settings.

When the situation is stable, agree on household rules for online money requests: no secrecy, no payment under pressure, no sharing of codes and an adult check before using a new payment method. The goal is a safer pause-and-ask habit, not a permanent loss of the child’s privacy or access to technology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I file a cybercrime report for my child if they are too embarrassed?
Yes. IC3 allows a person to file on someone else’s behalf. Use the child’s account of events and the transaction details, and keep the original messages and receipts because the online form does not take evidence attachments.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does paying a scammer with my bank account automatically make the transfer unauthorized?
No. The key question is who initiated the electronic transfer and what authority they had. A scammer who obtained credentials and moved the money may present an unauthorized-transfer claim, while a child who personally sent money after deception presents a different factual question.
What if the scammer keeps contacting my child after we report it?
Do not reply or pay. Preserve each new message, block the account after saving evidence, report the contact to the platform and contact law enforcement if the messages contain threats, stalking or an immediate safety concern.
Can a refund service recover cryptocurrency or gift-card money for a fee?
Treat unsolicited recovery offers as possible follow-on scams, especially when they demand an upfront payment or sensitive information. Contact the original issuer, exchange or financial institution through an official channel instead; recovery is uncertain and no paid service is required to make a report.
