Neither ChatGPT nor Gemini is the best coding assistant for every developer. ChatGPT with Codex is the stronger starting point for terminal-heavy, repository-level work that spans local development, GitHub, and ChatGPT. Gemini Code Assist is a strong starting point for developers who want help inside VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cloud Workstations, or Android Studio and value Google’s project-context workflow. The right choice depends on your IDE, the kind of coding task, the exact model and tool access you can use, and how well the assistant performs on your own code.

Is ChatGPT or Gemini better for coding?

The practical answer is to choose based on where the work happens. Start with ChatGPT and Codex if you need an assistant to work across terminal, IDE, GitHub, and ChatGPT surfaces. Start with Gemini Code Assist if you want code assistance in one of its documented IDEs and want features for working with project context, custom commands, and rules.

These are not perfectly interchangeable products. ChatGPT is an assistant experience, Codex is the coding workflow described in OpenAI’s release notes, and Gemini Code Assist is Google’s coding assistant for supported development environments. The model behind an assistant, the interface where you use it, and the tools it can access all affect what it can do. A benchmark score for a model does not by itself tell you which product will work better in your IDE or repository.

OpenAI’s release notes describe Codex workflows across terminal, IDE, GitHub, and ChatGPT, including local-to-cloud handoff and code review. Google documents Gemini Code Assist for code completion and generation, unit-test generation, debugging, code understanding, and documentation in supported IDEs. Those capabilities help identify a sensible trial, but they do not establish that one assistant will produce more correct code on your specific project.

What are the main differences for a coding workflow?

The biggest difference in the documented evidence is workflow emphasis: Codex spans multiple development surfaces, while Gemini Code Assist has explicitly documented support for a set of IDEs and project-context features. Use the table to narrow your shortlist, then verify current support for the model, plan, and environment you intend to use.

Area ChatGPT and Codex Gemini Code Assist
Documented surfaces Terminal, IDE, GitHub, and ChatGPT, according to OpenAI’s release notes. VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cloud Workstations, and Android Studio, according to Google Cloud’s overview.
Documented coding capabilities OpenAI describes coding and agentic workflows, local-to-cloud handoff, and code review in its release notes. Code completion and generation, unit-test generation, debugging, code understanding, and documentation in the supported IDEs.
Project-context workflow The release notes describe work across several surfaces; the cited material does not specify a comparable project-context feature set. Google’s developer documentation describes explaining and generating code, managing project context, and using custom commands and rules. See Gemini Code Assist documentation.
Model and benchmark evidence OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra announcement reports results across several coding evaluations, but the cited material does not provide a directly comparable Gemini result on every test. Google’s model cards publish dated results for named Gemini models and benchmarks; those results should be read as snapshots, not as a ranking against a different test.

The distinction between an IDE assistant and a broader agentic workflow matters most when a task crosses boundaries. If a change involves understanding a repository, editing several files, running commands, checking tests, and preparing a review, ask whether the tool can work through the steps you need and whether you can inspect what it changed. If your work is mainly in-editor explanation, completion, test creation, or debugging, compare the assistant’s behavior in your actual IDE instead of assuming that more surfaces necessarily mean better results.

Choose ChatGPT and Codex for work that crosses tools

Codex is the more natural first trial when your coding process relies on terminal use, repository-level changes, GitHub, or switching between local and cloud work. OpenAI describes those workflows in its ChatGPT release notes, updated in March 2026. That documentation supports a workflow-based recommendation; it is not evidence that every task can be completed autonomously or without review.

Choose Gemini Code Assist for a supported-IDE-centered workflow

Gemini Code Assist is a natural first trial if you work in VS Code, a JetBrains IDE, Cloud Workstations, or Android Studio and want completion, generation, testing, debugging, understanding, and documentation support. Google’s developer documentation also describes project context, custom commands, and rules. Confirm the exact IDE and edition you use against current documentation rather than treating support for one environment as proof of identical support in another.

How should you compare coding benchmark scores?

Use benchmark results to understand what kind of work a model has been evaluated on, not to declare a permanent winner. Scores vary by model version, test, harness, and date; two percentages from different benchmarks are not a head-to-head comparison.

For example, Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash model card reports results as of May 2026 of 76.2% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 55.1% on SWE-Bench Pro. Its Gemini 3.8 Flash model card reports a September 2026 result of 73.7% on DeepSWE v1.1. These figures describe different model snapshots and tests; they should not be lined up as if they measured the same task under the same conditions. The model cards are available for Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash.

Evidence What it reports How to interpret it
Gemini 3.5 Flash model card, May 2026 76.2% on Terminal-Bench 2.1; 55.1% on SWE-Bench Pro. Two results for this named model on two different benchmarks, reported as of May 2026.
Gemini 3.8 Flash model card, September 2026 73.7% on DeepSWE v1.1. A result for a different named model and benchmark, reported in September 2026.
Stanford AI Index 2025 BigCodeBench covers 1,140 fine-grained tasks across 139 libraries and seven domains. The report’s example chart places GPT-4o, Gemini, and other models in the low-to-mid 30s on the hard-set Pass@1 measure. The report notes that systems struggle on the hard subset. Its chart is a dated illustration, not a current ChatGPT-versus-Gemini leaderboard. See the Stanford AI Index 2025.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra announcement reports coding results across Terminal-Bench 4.0, DeepSWE v1.1, FrontierCode, internal database-migration tasks, and the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index. That list shows a range of evaluation types, but the cited material does not make every result directly comparable with the Gemini scores above. See OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra announcement.

Match the benchmark to the job

  • Short completions: Test how reliably the assistant completes the kinds of functions or snippets you write, in your editor and with your normal context.
  • Repository changes: Look for evaluations of patching or software-engineering tasks, but also test whether the assistant understands your repository and keeps changes within scope.
  • Terminal or agent use: A terminal-oriented benchmark is more relevant when the assistant must invoke tools or execute a sequence of actions than when you only want in-editor suggestions.
  • Long tasks: A short benchmark may not capture whether an assistant can make progress across several dependent steps. Evaluate the whole task, including correctness and the amount of human correction.

Stanford’s BigCodeBench example is a useful reminder that even broad coding evaluations can expose weaknesses: the report says current systems struggle on its hard subset. A strong score on one test does not eliminate the need to review generated code, tests, and tool actions.

How can you test both assistants on your own code?

Run the same small set of representative tasks in each assistant and compare completed work, not just the first answer. A fair trial uses the same task description, repository state, test conditions, and review standard; record failures and correction effort as well as successful output.

  1. Choose realistic tasks. Include a bug fix, a refactor, a test-writing task, and a documentation task if those are part of your work. Use tasks you understand well enough to judge, and avoid choosing only a task that naturally favors one interface.
  2. Keep the starting conditions consistent. Use the same project and instructions where both tools can access them. If one assistant works through a terminal or repository workflow and the other through an IDE-centered flow, note that difference rather than pretending the setup is identical.
  3. Ask for a bounded change. State the expected behavior, relevant constraints, and how you will verify success. A narrow request makes it easier to distinguish a correct implementation from a plausible but unrelated rewrite.
  4. Run the project’s checks. Review the changed files and run the tests or other checks appropriate to the project. Generated tests can be useful, but they do not prove the implementation is correct if they merely repeat the assistant’s assumptions.
  5. Record the outcome. Compare correctness, tool calls, latency, and review effort, as well as whether the assistant stayed within scope. Note where a task could not be completed because of interface, context, or access limits.
  6. Repeat on more than one task. One successful fix is not enough to establish a winner. Look for consistent performance across the task types that matter to you.

This method aligns with the practical recommendation in the evidence: try both on representative bug-fix, refactor, test-writing, and documentation work, and track correctness, tool calls, latency, and review effort. It also avoids a common mistake—choosing based on a benchmark score that measured a different kind of coding than the work you actually do.

Which assistant fits different kinds of developers?

Use your day-to-day workflow as the first filter. The recommendations below reflect documented product surfaces and capabilities, not a claim that either assistant wins every task.

Terminal-heavy or repository-focused development

Try ChatGPT with Codex first if you routinely work from a terminal, need repository-level changes, or want a workflow that can span terminal, IDE, GitHub, and ChatGPT. OpenAI’s release notes also describe local-to-cloud handoff and code review workflows. Verify the exact tools and access available in the version you plan to use.

Development centered on VS Code, JetBrains, Cloud Workstations, or Android Studio

Try Gemini Code Assist first if your preferred environment is among Google’s documented supported IDEs. Its documented feature set includes completion and generation as well as unit-test generation, debugging, code understanding, and documentation. If project context, custom commands, or rules are important, test those features with a real project before relying on them.

Teams choosing one tool for mixed workflows

Do not assume the choice has to be based on brand or a single leaderboard. Check the IDE support, model access, quota, latency, privacy controls, and review requirements for the team’s actual setup. If both tools are available, the same-task trial can reveal whether one is better for repository work while the other fits an IDE-based task more comfortably.

What should you check before choosing a plan or model?

Product names, model availability, pricing, quotas, latency, and privacy controls can change. Confirm the current terms for your region, account, and intended environment at the time you choose; do not infer a subscription’s limits from a model-card result or from support for a different edition.

One concrete model-card price is available for Gemini 3.8 Flash: its September 2026 model card lists $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens before regular-rate adjustments. Treat those as the model card’s dated pricing snapshot, not a universal price for Gemini Code Assist, a subscription, or a current purchase. Check the Gemini 3.8 Flash model card for its stated context and verify current pricing and availability directly before budgeting.

  • Model access: Confirm the exact model name available in the product and plan you will use; product and model names are not interchangeable.
  • Quota and cost: Check current usage limits and billing for your account. A model’s token price does not establish the total cost or quota of an IDE assistant or broader product.
  • Latency: Try the tool on a task of representative size. Speed can affect whether an assistant is useful in an interactive edit or a longer agent workflow.
  • Context handling: Check whether it can use the relevant files and project information for your work, and whether it can continue effectively when a task spans several steps.
  • Privacy and governance: Review the current data controls and terms that apply to your account and organization before sharing source code. Do not assume that the same privacy settings apply across products, plans, or account types.
  • IDE and tool support: Confirm support for the exact IDE, terminal, GitHub workflow, and account setup you intend to use.

What is the overall recommendation?

Choose ChatGPT with Codex as your first trial for terminal-heavy, repository-level, GitHub-connected, or multi-surface agentic work. Choose Gemini Code Assist as your first trial for an IDE-centered workflow in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cloud Workstations, or Android Studio, especially if Google’s project-context features fit how you work. If neither recommendation is decisive, run the same representative tasks in both and choose the one that delivers correct changes with less latency and review effort in your environment.

That is a workflow recommendation, not a permanent model ranking. OpenAI describes GPT-5.4 as combining reasoning, coding, and agentic workflows, and its GPT-6 Astra announcement covers several coding evaluations. Google’s model cards provide dated results for named Gemini models. Since the evidence spans different tests, dates, models, and product surfaces, it supports careful task-specific comparison—not a universal claim that ChatGPT or Gemini is always better at programming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use both ChatGPT and Gemini for the same project?

Yes, if your organization’s rules and the products’ current data controls allow it. Keep a clear record of which assistant made each change, and review the combined result as one code change rather than assuming either tool knows what the other did.

Should I let an AI coding assistant make changes without reviewing them?

No. Review the diff and run relevant checks before merging or deploying, even when the assistant reports that tests passed. Generated code and tests can both reflect the same mistaken assumption.

What should I avoid pasting into an AI coding assistant?

Do not share passwords, API keys, access tokens, or other secrets. For proprietary code, first confirm that your organization permits sharing it with the specific product and account you plan to use.
