Neither ChatGPT nor Claude remembers every conversation like a person. A reply is built from the messages in your current chat plus any personalization, files, project instructions, or past-chat results that the product is allowed to retrieve. Those sources are separate: deleting a chat may not delete a saved preference, and a project can impose a different boundary from your account.
In practice, “memory” means three different things: live context inside one conversation, information saved or supplied for personalization, and selective retrieval from older chats or project material. The controls, availability and deletion rules differ between ChatGPT and Claude, so the setting that prevents reuse in one service is not necessarily the equivalent setting in the other.

What does “remember” mean in an AI assistant?
There are three layers to keep separate when you ask whether an assistant remembers you.
Live conversation context
Both assistants can use earlier turns in the chat that is currently open. This is context supplied with the request, not a human-like memory. Context windows have limits, and the product may summarize, omit or stop using older turns as a conversation grows.

Persistent or semi-persistent personalization
A service can keep preferences, profile details, instructions or other information outside a single chat. That information may be applied to future conversations when the relevant feature is enabled. It is not the same as loading a complete transcript: the system selects what it considers useful.
Retrieval from past chats, files and projects
Some products search older conversations or uploaded material and insert relevant passages into a new request. Retrieval is selective, so an assistant can miss a detail, find an outdated version, or use information from a scope you did not expect. “It remembered” usually means that one of these sources was supplied to the model for that response.
How does ChatGPT remember information?
ChatGPT can draw on several distinct sources when those features are available in your account. OpenAI says that memory “does not retain every detail from every conversation”; it decides which available information is relevant to a response.
Saved memories are separate from chat history
A saved memory is a preference or fact retained for personalization, such as a writing preference. It is stored separately from the conversation in which it originated. Deleting that original chat therefore does not automatically remove the saved memory.
To remove a detail completely, check all of the places where a copy may exist: delete the saved memory, delete the originating chat, and remove copies in uploaded files or connected applications. OpenAI notes that memory changes and deletions can take time to propagate. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
Reference chat history is selective retrieval
When the reference-chat-history setting is available and on, ChatGPT may use details derived from earlier chats. This is not a promise of verbatim transcript recall. OpenAI says the details considered useful can change as the system updates what it chooses to remember.

Turning reference chat history off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, but the original chats remain until you delete them separately. This distinction explains why disabling the setting does not make the chat list disappear.
Custom instructions, files and connected apps add other context
Custom instructions are direct guidance that you write for ChatGPT. Memory is context that develops from conversations and enabled sources, so a preference can appear even when you never typed it into the custom-instructions fields. Library files and content from connected applications can also be available to the assistant when the product and your permissions allow it.
For privacy troubleshooting, treat each source independently. A fact in a custom instruction, a document in your Library, and a saved memory require different removal actions.
What does Temporary Chat change?
Temporary Chat is ChatGPT’s clearest non-persistent mode. OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories and do not appear in chat history while they are temporary. At startup, you can choose whether the temporary chat may use existing memories and personalization; an unpersonalized temporary chat is the strongest option when you do not want those sources applied.

Temporary does not mean that no copy exists anywhere. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety, so use the mode to prevent personalization and history features, not as a guarantee of instantaneous physical deletion from every system.
How does project-only memory work?
A project configured for project-only memory changes the boundary of what can be referenced. Saved memories outside the project are not used; chats inside the project can reference other conversations in that same project, while chats outside cannot reference project conversations. This is a scope control, not human-like memory or a guarantee that every project message will be recalled.

How does Claude remember information?
Claude keeps context within an open conversation. Continuity between separate chats comes from explicit project material or, where enabled, a feature that searches previous conversations.
Search and reference chats
Anthropic describes a “Search and reference chats” feature that lets you ask Claude to find what was discussed previously and assemble relevant context. The feature was rolling out to Max, Team and Enterprise plans and was expected to expand, so availability can vary by plan, region, workspace and account. Check your own settings rather than assuming that every Claude account has it.

Profile preferences, project instructions and project knowledge
Claude separates three project-related sources. Profile preferences apply across conversations. Project instructions apply only inside a selected project. Uploaded project knowledge is available across chats in that project. A response can therefore reflect a profile preference even when the project contains no such instruction, or use a project document without changing your account-wide profile.
Retrieval-augmented generation for Projects
Paid Claude projects can use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). When the project’s knowledge approaches context limits, Claude automatically searches uploaded documents for relevant material instead of loading everything at once. Anthropic describes this as providing up to 10 times more project capacity; it is a documented capacity description, not a measurement of answer accuracy.
Exporting your Claude data
Claude users can export conversation and account data from Settings > Privacy in the web app or Claude Desktop. Anthropic states that the mobile apps cannot initiate an export. Export is useful for auditing what you have stored before you delete chats or reorganize projects.

What is the difference between ChatGPT and Claude memory?
The products overlap in concept but expose different controls and scopes. The table summarizes the practical distinctions documented for their current features; labels and availability can change with product rollouts.

How can you stop ChatGPT from using information about you?
Use a layered check rather than one switch. The exact labels can differ by plan, region, platform and workspace.
- Disable or review saved memories. Open the memory controls in ChatGPT’s settings, inspect the stored entries and delete the ones you no longer want used.
- Turn off reference chat history. This schedules information derived from past chats for deletion within 30 days; it does not delete the original conversations.
- Delete source chats. Remove conversations that contain the information, especially if you do not want them available for any future review.
- Review custom instructions. Remove personal details or standing preferences from the custom-instruction fields if they should not shape new answers.
- Check files and connected apps. Delete duplicate copies from your Library and revoke or adjust connected-app access where appropriate.
- Use an unpersonalized Temporary Chat for sensitive one-off work. Choose the startup option that excludes existing memories and personalization. Remember that OpenAI may retain a safety copy for up to 30 days.
- Use project-only memory for compartmentalized work. Keep a project’s conversations inside its boundary when you do not want account-wide saved memories or outside chats involved.
How can you stop Claude from searching older conversations?
Claude’s controls focus on search, profile data and project scope.
- Open Settings > Profile > Preferences. Turn off Search and reference chats if you do not want new chats to search previous conversations.
- Delete a sensitive old chat. Anthropic identifies deletion as the current way to guarantee that a particular conversation is not included in conversation search.
- Audit profile preferences. Remove account-wide instructions that you do not want applied in every conversation.
- Review each project. Check project instructions and uploaded project knowledge; remove documents that contain information you no longer want available across that project’s chats.
- Export before making a large cleanup. Use Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop. Mobile apps cannot start the export.
Why does an assistant remember something incorrectly or bring up an old version?
Retrieval is relevance-based, not a guaranteed database lookup. The system may select a passage that resembles your question, ignore a detail because of context limits, or find an older statement when a newer one is stored elsewhere.
- Conflicting sources: a saved preference, custom instruction and project document can disagree.
- Scope confusion: a project rule may apply only inside that project, while a profile preference applies broadly.
- Stale documents: uploaded files are not automatically corrected when the real-world source changes.
- Long conversations: early turns may be summarized or fall outside the usable context.
- Feature changes: products can change what they retrieve as settings and models are updated.
When accuracy matters, state the current fact in the prompt, identify the authoritative file or instruction, and ask the assistant to flag conflicts instead of silently choosing one. Do not treat a confident reference to an old chat as proof that the complete transcript was retained.

A controlled audit is more reliable than asking “What do you remember?” because that question invites a guess. Use a harmless, unique test phrase and keep the test within the account and project you are evaluating.

- Create a short test chat containing a distinctive phrase and a clearly dated preference.
- Start a separate chat and ask whether the phrase is available, then ask which source supplied it.
- Repeat with past-chat search disabled, with a project-only boundary, or in an unpersonalized Temporary Chat, depending on the product.
- Delete the test chat, remove any saved memory or project file containing the phrase, and repeat after the product’s stated propagation period.
- Record the account, plan, platform and date. Feature rollouts can make two accounts behave differently.
These steps reveal which controls are active for your account; they do not measure general recall quality. No independent benchmark or peer-reviewed statistic in the cited official documentation quantifies how often either assistant retrieves a correct old detail.

Can you rely on either assistant to remember an important fact?
No. Treat remembered information as a convenience layer, not as a record of truth. For medical, legal, financial, security or operational decisions, provide the current source in the active chat or project and verify the resulting answer against that source.

Does deleting a ChatGPT conversation erase everything it learned from me?
Not necessarily. A saved memory, custom instruction, Library file or connected-app copy can remain after the conversation is deleted, so each source has to be checked separately. OpenAI also says some deletion-related logs may persist for up to 30 days.
Can Claude see every chat in my account when chat search is enabled?
Anthropic describes search as finding relevant previous conversations and assembling context, not loading the entire account into every reply. The feature’s availability depends on the account, plan and rollout status, and deleting a specific chat is the stated way to exclude it from search.
Does a project keep ChatGPT or Claude memories permanently isolated?
A project boundary limits which sources can be referenced, but it does not make the model infallible or freeze the documents inside it. Review project instructions and uploaded knowledge, and remove outdated copies when the project’s source of truth changes.
How long does a Temporary Chat stay private?
Temporary Chat prevents history and memory updates under the documented conditions, but OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. It should therefore be viewed as a non-personalized mode, not an instant zero-retention guarantee.
Can I export my Claude conversations from an iPhone or Android app?
Anthropic says exports can be initiated from the web app or Claude Desktop through Settings > Privacy. The mobile apps cannot initiate the export, so use one of those other interfaces.
