ChatGPT ads may appear for eligible Free and Go users in select regions, but OpenAI says they do not influence the answers ChatGPT generates. The test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, and is gradually expanding; availability, eligible accounts, and formats can change. OpenAI says ads are kept separate from responses, advertisers do not receive chat histories, and users have settings and plan options that can reduce or avoid ads. Here is what the current policy says—and what it does not establish independently.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ads may appear for logged-in users on the Free and Go plans in select regions as the test rolls out. Its current Help Center says availability is expanding gradually, so the feature is not necessarily active for every eligible account or in every country. The test began in the United States on February 9, 2026; OpenAI’s launch announcement describes that initial scope as logged-in adults using Free and Go. Check the current ChatGPT ads FAQ or in-product information for your account’s status.

These are OpenAI’s current product statements, not a guarantee that plan names, eligibility, or regional availability will remain unchanged. OpenAI says the rollout and available choices can vary by region and over time. The company’s February 9, 2026 announcement explains the initial U.S. test; the Help Center is the more appropriate place to check the current consumer-facing rules.
Where do ads appear, and what do they look like?
OpenAI says an ad may appear below a ChatGPT response, visually separated from the answer and clearly labeled as an ad. The system does not necessarily show an ad in every conversation: eligibility and whether there is a relevant advertising opportunity both matter.

OpenAI has also described a multi-image ad format being tested during image generation. The ad unit is presented separately from the image ChatGPT is creating; it is not supposed to become part of the generated image. This is a test format, not evidence that all users will see image-generation ads. OpenAI announced it in its October 5, 2026 article, “Building advertising for the way people use AI.”
In either placement, the key distinction OpenAI describes is between the answer and the ad: the ad is a labeled promotional item alongside the product experience, rather than text presented as part of ChatGPT’s response. The Help Center’s ads FAQ is the source for the current placement description.

Do ChatGPT ads influence the answers?
OpenAI’s answer is no: it says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. That is OpenAI’s stated design and policy; the available materials describe how the company says the system works, not an independent audit of every ad delivery or response.
OpenAI’s engineering team gives a more technical explanation. In an October 21, 2026 account of the ad system, Ritendra Datta and Karthik Gopalratnam say that ad selection runs alongside normal response generation so the ads flow does not influence the response. They describe separate services, models, and code paths for ad selection and answer generation. According to the article, the organic response continues even if ad serving is slow or unavailable. The separation matters because ad relevance and answer quality are different jobs. An ad system can decide whether an advertiser’s promotion fits a situation without selecting what ChatGPT says in response. OpenAI’s stated boundary is that advertisers can participate in the former, but cannot purchase influence over the latter. A reader should understand that boundary as a product commitment made by OpenAI, rather than as evidence that the systems have been independently tested by the sources cited here.
How does ChatGPT decide which ad to show?
OpenAI says its system seeks relevant ads by considering the conversation and the promotion, with selected broader ChatGPT signals also potentially used when ad personalization is enabled. The exact ad shown can therefore depend on more than a single word in the latest message.

- Current conversation: the context and apparent intent of the ongoing chat.
- The ad itself: its title, copy, and landing page, which help the system evaluate what the advertiser is offering.
- Advertiser-provided information: context hints and targeting selections that guide matching.
- Broader experience signals: selected signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience, if ad personalization is enabled.
OpenAI describes these factors in its consumer ads FAQ and its advertiser guide, “Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.” The advertiser guide makes an important qualification: context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation. In other words, providing a hint is guidance to the matching system, not a command that forces delivery against a specific phrase.
Why matching may change during a conversation
OpenAI’s engineering article says user intent can become clearer across multiple turns, rather than being fixed by the first prompt. The ad system therefore maintains session state and updates its understanding as a conversation develops. OpenAI describes retrieval, ranking, relevance evaluation, and final selection as steps inside the ads system. That explanation helps clarify why a later turn may affect relevance, but it does not mean an advertiser can direct the wording or ranking of ChatGPT’s answer.

The architecture description is authored by OpenAI engineers and should be read with that attribution. It explains the company’s system design; it does not provide a public independent assessment of how each signal is weighted, nor does the current consumer FAQ publish a complete scoring formula.
What information do advertisers receive?
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive a user’s chat content or personal details through the ad system. The reporting it describes is aggregated campaign information, such as ad views and clicks, rather than individual conversation histories.

Specifically, OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, a user’s name or email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. It characterizes reporting as aggregate, so an advertiser can see campaign performance at a summary level without being given the underlying chat that led to an impression or click. These privacy claims are OpenAI’s statements about its own product and data practices; the cited pages do not constitute an independent audit.
There is a distinction between what advertisers receive and what the ad system may use to select a promotion. OpenAI says selected signals from a broader ChatGPT experience can contribute to matching when personalization is on, while also saying those signals and chat content are not shared with advertisers as personal records. What controls can I use, and how can I avoid ads?
OpenAI lists controls for ad personalization and individual ads, as well as paid and limited free choices for an ad-free experience. Which choices are offered can depend on region and may change; consult the current FAQ or the controls shown in your account rather than assuming a particular option is available everywhere.
Adjust ad personalization
OpenAI says users can turn ad personalization off. That changes whether selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience are used for personalization; it should not be confused with a promise that ads disappear altogether. OpenAI also says users can use ad controls to see why an ad was shown and clear data used for ads. Its FAQ describes the available controls, though their exact labels and location in the interface may change.
Manage an individual ad
OpenAI says users can dismiss or report ads. Those actions are feedback or ad-management controls; they do not give the advertiser access to the user’s conversation. The interface may also provide an explanation of why an ad was shown. Use the ad’s own controls when you want to manage that specific placement, and the account’s ad settings when you want to change personalization or clear ad data.
Choose an ad-free option
OpenAI identifies two ways to avoid ads: switch to a paid plan it lists as ad-free, or choose a limited free no-ads option where available. The ad-free paid plans listed in the current FAQ are Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. The free alternative comes with additional limits, and OpenAI does not promise that it will be offered in every region or remain available under the same terms. The cited material does not establish a price for these choices, so check the current plan and in-product information before deciding.
These settings and plan choices answer different needs: turning off personalization affects the signals used to tailor ads, while selecting an ad-free option is the route OpenAI identifies for avoiding ad placements. A limited free no-ads choice has additional usage limits, while the listed paid and organizational plans are described as ad-free. OpenAI’s approach to advertising and access provides broader context for why it presents an ad-supported option alongside paid plans.
Are ads allowed around sensitive topics?
OpenAI says ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics, and that political advertising is currently disallowed. It also says some advertisers in regulated categories, including health and financial services, may qualify under eligibility criteria, while ads remain excluded from sensitive user content.

Does hiding or clicking a ChatGPT ad change what ChatGPT remembers about me?
OpenAI says viewing, clicking, hiding, or reporting an ad is not added to ChatGPT memory. That is separate from whether an ad-related conversation is saved as chat history under the account’s normal history settings.
Can I ask ChatGPT about an ad I saw?
Yes. OpenAI says you can use “Ask ChatGPT” to share an ad with ChatGPT. If reference chat history is enabled, that conversation may be referenced in future chats.
How long does ChatGPT keep data used for ads after I clear it?
OpenAI says data deleted through the ad controls is retained for up to 30 days before removal. That stated period concerns ad data cleared through those controls, not a general retention schedule for all ChatGPT data.
