Safari has no separate default-email setting. On a Mac, choose the email-link handler in Mail’s General settings. On an iPhone or iPad, choose it in Settings’ Default Apps menu. The right steps depend on which Apple device you use.
What changes when you set a default email app?
The setting controls which app opens when you click an email link. It does not change your email address or move your account. On Mac, Apple says Mail is the default email app until you choose another one. Apple’s Mac instructions explain the setting.

Change the default email app on a Mac
- Install the email app you want to use.
- Open Mail and make sure it is configured with an email account. Apple says you can remove or disable that account after changing the default.
- In the menu bar, choose Mail > Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions), then select General.
- Open the Default email reader menu and select the app. If it is not listed, choose Select and locate it.
The chosen app should open when you click an email link. If you want a webmail site to handle links, see the browser caveat below.

Change the default email app on iPhone or iPad
- Update iOS or iPadOS if needed so the Default Apps controls are available.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps.

Can Safari open webmail when you click an email link?
On a Mac, you can choose a browser from Mail’s Default email reader menu, but that does not guarantee that clicking an email link will open your webmail automatically. The browser or webmail service may have its own settings that affect the behavior. If links do not open the expected page, check those settings as well as the selection in Mail.
