Castov is a developer toolbox for inspecting timestamps, JWTs, Base64, UUIDs, JSON, cron expressions, and related values without repeatedly leaving your normal workflow. Use its browser tools for visual, one-off checks; its npm CLI or SDK for terminal and application workflows; and its VS Code extension for in-editor inspection. Castov’s documented CLI commands run in the local Node.js environment, and its FAQ says time, date, and converter tools do not upload input to Castov servers. That is a safer default than pasting a production credential into an unknown decoder, but it is not a blanket guarantee for every feature: Env Vault and P2P are explicitly identified as network-using exceptions, and you should review data handling before using any live token.

What does Castov do, and why does it matter?

Castov combines three ways to perform the small conversions and inspections developers commonly search for: a web suite, an npm-based command-line interface and SDK, and a VS Code extension. The goal is less tab switching and less exposure of sensitive values to random public websites.

The recurring searches are familiar: “epoch converter” when a log contains a ten-digit number, “jwt decode” when an API token needs a quick claim check, “cron expression generator” when a schedule is hard to read, or “base64 decode” when a configuration value is opaque. Each task is easy in isolation, but copying production data into an unknown page creates a preventable security and compliance question. Castov puts those operations in tools you can choose according to context.

  • Web: a visual interface for occasional conversions and inspection.
  • CLI: commands that fit shell pipelines, scripts, and incident-response routines.
  • SDK: a way to integrate the same style of operations into application code.
  • VS Code: hover information and editor commands while you are reading code, logs, or configuration.

The important distinction is not simply convenience. A JWT is a credential, and a timestamp may reveal deployment, account, or event timing. Keep live values in a tool whose execution and network behavior you understand.

Is Castov actually local and private?

For the documented time, date, and converter tools, Castov’s official FAQ says input is not uploaded to Castov servers. Its CLI page describes “100% Local Execution”: commands run entirely in the local Node.js environment without sending tokens, timestamps, or hashes to remote servers. Those statements support a local-first workflow, but they should not be expanded into a claim that every Castov feature is offline.

What the local claims cover

  • The CLI examples for timestamps, JWT decoding, UUID generation, and related conversions execute on your machine.
  • The web suite’s time, date, and converter tools are described as not uploading input to Castov servers.
  • Local execution means a token or timestamp can be processed without being transmitted to a third-party decoder service, subject to your own environment, browser extensions, proxy, and logging configuration.

Which features need separate review?

Castov names Env Vault and P2P as network-using exceptions in its privacy FAQ. Treat those features as a different category: read their specific behavior, decide whether your organization permits the data flow, and avoid assuming the local guarantees for the converter tools apply there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The VS Code extension is useful for local editor work, but the available material does not establish a universal offline guarantee for every extension operation. Check the extension’s current permissions and documentation before selecting a production token. Your editor, shell history, terminal transcript, CI logs, crash reports, and screen-sharing software can also retain sensitive values even when the conversion itself is local.

How should you handle a live production JWT?

Prefer a redacted or synthetic token whenever a real credential is not required. If you must inspect a live token, use the local CLI or an approved local editor workflow, disable command logging where appropriate, avoid putting the token in a shared issue or chat, and revoke or rotate it if it was exposed to an unapproved service. Local processing reduces one class of risk; it does not make an accidentally copied credential harmless.

Which Castov surface should you choose?

Choose based on where the value already exists. The same timestamp or token can be inspected in a browser, terminal, application, or editor, but each surface has different speed and handling characteristics.

Surface Best use Typical action Data-handling decision
Web suite One-off visual checks and exploration Paste or enter a timestamp, JSON document, Base64 value, or cron expression into a browser tool Time, date, and converter tools are documented as not uploading input; review exceptions before using networked features
CLI Terminal work, scripts, repeatable incident procedures castov ts 1700000000, castov jwt <token>, or castov uuid --v7 Commands are documented as running entirely in local Node.js without sending tokens, timestamps, or hashes remotely
SDK Embedding conversions or inspection in your own program Call the documented Castov package from application code Audit your application’s own telemetry, inputs, and logs; SDK use does not remove those responsibilities
VS Code extension Reading code, logs, and configuration without leaving the editor Hover a timestamp, select a JWT, run a Base64 command, or insert a UUID Review current extension permissions and avoid assuming every command has identical network behavior

How do you use Castov’s web tools?

The browser suite is the quickest option when you want a visual result and are not already working in a terminal or editor. It covers time, JSON, encoding, and other converter-style tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Castov web suite in a browser you trust.
  2. Select the tool matching the value: timestamp/date, JWT, Base64, JSON, UUID, cron, or time-zone conversion.
  3. Enter the smallest necessary sample. For a production credential, use a redacted token or a locally approved workflow instead of a public page.
  4. Read the rendered result and copy only the output you need. Remove the input from the page before closing it if the interface retains form state.
  5. For a recurring task, move the operation to the CLI, SDK, or VS Code extension so the procedure is repeatable and less dependent on manual copying.

Browser tools are particularly useful for exploring an unfamiliar cron expression or checking how a date appears in another time zone. They are less suitable for automation because a human must perform the copy-and-paste step and browser history or extensions may capture page content.

How do you install and use the Castov CLI?

The CLI is distributed through npm. You can run it immediately with npx or install a global command for repeated use.

Option 1: run without a global install

npx castov

This is convenient on a machine where you want an on-demand invocation. Confirm your organization’s policy for downloading npm packages at runtime, and use the normal controls you apply to package execution.

Option 2: install the command globally

npm install -g castov

A global install makes the castov command available in your shell for repeated checks and scripts. The npm runtime must be available on the machine, and your PATH must include the global npm bin directory.

Timestamp parsing

castov ts 1700000000

The documented example passes a Unix-style timestamp to ts. Keep the unit explicit when you are diagnosing logs: ten digits conventionally represent seconds, while thirteen digits conventionally represent milliseconds. Verify the resulting calendar date and time zone before drawing an operational conclusion, especially around daylight-saving changes.

JWT decoding

castov jwt <token>

Replace <token> with the JWT value in your local shell. The command is intended for inspection of the token’s header and payload, including claims such as expiration. Decoding is not the same as validating a signature or proving that a token is accepted by an API; use your service’s verification path for that decision.

Be careful with shell history. Supplying a real token as a command-line argument can write it to history, process listings, terminal scrollback, or centralized command telemetry. For production credentials, prefer an input method that your operating system and security policy keep out of persistent logs, or inspect a sanitized copy.

UUID version 7 generation

castov uuid --v7

This command generates a UUID version 7 value. Version 7 UUIDs are useful when you want an identifier with time-ordered characteristics, while version 4 remains the conventional random form. Treat generated identifiers as data, not as secrets, and check that the receiving system supports the UUID version you select.

Using the SDK

Castov documents an SDK alongside the CLI for application integration. Use the package’s current API documentation for import names, function signatures, and return types rather than copying a guessed snippet. In production code, add tests for timestamp units, invalid JWT structure, malformed Base64, and time-zone boundaries, then ensure inputs and outputs are not written to application logs unintentionally.

What can the VS Code extension do?

The official VS Code extension keeps common inspections in the editor. Its documented features include automatic timestamp interpretation, selected-value conversion, JWT inspection, Base64 actions, and UUID insertion.

Timestamp hover and conversion

When the extension recognizes a 10-digit seconds value or a 13-digit milliseconds value, it can show an interpretation on hover. You can also select a timestamp and run the command to convert the selection to a date. This is useful in logs and fixtures where leaving the file would break concentration or introduce a copy error.

JWT inspection

Select a JWT in the editor and run Castov: Decode Selected JWT Token. The extension can expose the token’s header, payload, and expiration information for inspection. Remember that readable claims do not establish authenticity: a decoder can show what a token says without verifying that its signature is valid for your service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Base64 actions

Select text and use the extension’s Base64 encode or decode action. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption, so decoded content should be treated as potentially sensitive. Avoid committing decoded secrets to a file or leaving them in an unsaved editor buffer that is synchronized or backed up.

UUID insertion

The extension can insert UUID version 4 or version 7 values at the cursor. Use version 4 for a random identifier when ordering is not part of the requirement; choose version 7 only when downstream systems and privacy expectations allow a time-related identifier.

How does Castov handle common developer conversions?

Castov’s documented scope covers several data shapes that otherwise send developers to separate websites. Each has a different failure mode, so the useful result is more than a formatted value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Task What to inspect Common mistake to avoid
Timestamp and date Seconds versus milliseconds, resulting calendar date, and time zone Reading a 13-digit millisecond value as seconds and landing thousands of years away
JWT Header, payload claims, expiration, and token structure Confusing decoding with signature verification or authorization
Base64 Decoded bytes or text and whether the input is URL-safe Base64 Assuming Base64 hides or encrypts a secret
UUID Requested version and whether the receiving system accepts it Using a time-ordered UUID where a system expects only version 4
JSON Syntax, structure, and readable formatting Editing formatted output without preserving the original semantic types
Cron Field interpretation, schedule frequency, and the scheduler’s time zone Assuming every cron implementation supports the same number of fields or special characters

What are practical Castov workflows?

Investigating an authentication failure

  1. Obtain the token through an approved diagnostic channel; do not copy it from a shared chat or ticket.
  2. Use the local CLI command castov jwt <token> or the VS Code selected-token command.
  3. Check expiration and relevant audience, issuer, or subject claims against the service configuration.
  4. Use the service’s actual verification logs or authentication library to determine whether the signature and policy checks pass.
  5. Remove the token from shell history, temporary files, and editor buffers, and rotate it if it reached an unauthorized destination.

Reading an event timestamp

  1. Copy only the numeric value from the log line.
  2. Run castov ts 1700000000 with the value substituted, or hover the value in VS Code.
  3. Confirm whether the source emits seconds or milliseconds and record the time zone used for the displayed date.
  4. Compare the converted time with adjacent log events before attributing a cause to the incident.

Reviewing a scheduled job

  1. Place the cron expression in the web tool or select it in VS Code for a readable interpretation.
  2. Check the scheduler implementation’s field count and time-zone setting.
  3. Test boundary dates, daylight-saving transitions, and the next several expected runs in a non-production environment.
  4. Document the intended schedule beside the expression so a future editor does not rely solely on a generated explanation.

What are Castov’s limitations and common pitfalls?

  • Local does not mean risk-free. Shell history, editor sync, browser extensions, terminal recording, and CI logs can still retain values.
  • JWT decoding is not authentication. A payload is user-controlled text until a trusted verifier checks the signature and policy.
  • Unit mistakes produce plausible-looking errors. Always distinguish seconds from milliseconds and verify the time zone.
  • Feature privacy can differ. The privacy FAQ identifies Env Vault and P2P as network-using exceptions; evaluate those separately.
  • Documentation can change. npm package behavior, extension commands, permissions, and Marketplace metadata may change, so check the current documentation before standardizing a workflow.
  • Browser convenience is not automation. Use the CLI or SDK when a conversion must be repeatable, reviewable, or part of a deployment process.
  • Generated output still needs domain validation. A formatted JSON document, cron explanation, UUID, or date can be syntactically correct while still being wrong for your application.

Is Castov a good replacement for random online converters?

For developers who repeatedly inspect timestamps, JWT claims, Base64, UUIDs, JSON, or cron expressions, Castov is a practical way to keep the operation near the code and to reduce unnecessary data movement. Its strongest case is the combination of local CLI execution, editor commands, and a browser fallback for visual work.

It should not replace your security controls, JWT verification libraries, secret-management policy, or scheduler tests. Use it as an inspection and conversion layer: select the surface that matches your workflow, keep credentials out of unapproved destinations, and verify any result that affects production behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Castov verify whether a JWT signature is valid?

The documented JWT feature focuses on decoding the header, payload, and expiration. Use the API or authentication service’s configured verification library to validate the signature, issuer, audience, and authorization policy.

Does Base64 encoding protect a secret?

No. Base64 is reversible encoding used to represent bytes as text. Anyone who receives the encoded value can decode it, so protect Base64 strings containing credentials as if they were plaintext.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my timestamp show the wrong date in a converter?

The usual causes are confusing seconds with milliseconds or interpreting a UTC value in the wrong time zone. Compare the digit length, confirm the source system’s unit, and check the displayed zone before investigating the underlying event.

Can I use Castov in a CI pipeline?

The CLI is designed for terminal use and local Node.js execution, so it can fit scripted workflows. Keep tokens out of command arguments and logs, pin or review the package according to your dependency policy, and test malformed inputs before allowing a pipeline to depend on the output.
