Carbonite Professional is the stronger fit for a small team that needs Windows server backup, bare-metal recovery, shared device bundles, policy controls, or support for listed compliance frameworks. Backblaze Business Backup is a better fit for teams protecting Mac and Windows computers that prefer a per-computer price, unlimited backup per device, and one-year version history. The choice comes down to whether your priority is bundled server-oriented coverage or simpler endpoint pricing and capacity. The prices and features below reflect vendor pages checked on October 25, 2026; confirm current terms before buying.

What is the main difference between Carbonite Professional and Backblaze Business?

Carbonite Professional sells bundles that combine a device allowance with a shared storage limit, while Backblaze Business Backup charges per computer and lists unlimited backup capacity for each covered device. Carbonite’s published business plans also include server-oriented features; Backblaze Business Backup is presented primarily as protection for Mac and Windows computers.

That makes the decision less about picking a universal winner and more about matching the billing model and recovery controls to the machines your team actually needs to protect. A team with a Windows server or a need for bare-metal image restore should examine Carbonite’s Power and Ultimate tiers. A team with endpoint computers and widely varying data volumes may find Backblaze’s per-device model easier to budget.

How much do Carbonite Professional and Backblaze Business cost?

Carbonite’s current listing uses annual prices for bundles; Backblaze lists an annual charge per computer. The values below are vendor-listed prices as checked October 25, 2026, and can change.

#1 Best Overall
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
Service or tier Listed price Included capacity and coverage
Carbonite Professional Core $287.99 per year 250 GB; up to 25 computers, external drives, and NAS
Carbonite Professional Power $799.99 per year 500 GB; one server and up to 25 computers
Carbonite Professional Ultimate $1,299.99 per year 500 GB; unlimited servers and 25 computers
Carbonite additional storage $99 per 100 GB increment Additional capacity; the listing does not specify a separate billing cadence for this increment
Backblaze Business Backup $99 per year per computer Unlimited backup per device

These prices are not directly comparable without knowing the team’s device count and storage needs. For example, Core’s stated limit is a shared 250 GB across its bundle, whereas Backblaze’s allowance is unlimited per computer. A team can fit within Carbonite’s device count yet exceed its bundled capacity, so estimate protected data—not just the number of computers—and account for any added storage increments.

At the listed Backblaze rate, calculate the endpoint portion as $99 multiplied by the number of computers. The vendor page separately describes Enterprise Control features, but the cited pricing information does not state a separate Enterprise Control price. Confirm whether the controls you need are included in your quote.

Which service is better for a small business?

For a business with a modest number of endpoints and substantial or uneven data on each machine, Backblaze’s per-computer price and unlimited per-device capacity can make budgeting more straightforward. Carbonite can suit a team that wants to cover many computers within a bundle, provided its shared storage allowance is sufficient or the cost of added capacity is acceptable.

When Carbonite’s bundle can fit

  • Your team needs to protect a Windows server, in addition to computers.
  • You want server image backup and bare-metal restore capabilities.
  • Many computers fit under one tier’s device allowance, and their combined protected data fits the listed storage limit.
  • You need Carbonite’s listed policy management or its stated support for HIPAA, FERPA, or GLBA.

When per-computer billing can fit

  • Your main requirement is backup for Mac and Windows endpoint computers.
  • You want unlimited backup capacity per covered device rather than a shared storage pool.
  • You prefer to forecast the base backup charge by counting computers.
  • Your administration needs match the controls in Business Backup, or you can confirm that Enterprise Control provides the additional controls you require.

Neither model is automatically cheaper: Carbonite’s bundle may serve several computers at one annual price but has a storage ceiling, while Backblaze’s price scales with every computer and does not list a per-device storage tier. Compare the total annual quote against the exact machines and data you will protect.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Is Backblaze Business really unlimited?

Backblaze’s Business Backup page describes the service as “Unlimited backup per device with no storage tiers, overages, or surprise bills.” Its pricing page lists Business Backup at $99 per year per computer. This is unlimited capacity per covered device—not one unlimited shared pool that can be divided among computers.

The distinction matters when you have several computers: the listed annual charge applies to each computer, while each one has no stated storage cap in the cited Business Backup materials. Backblaze also lists one-year version history, which describes how far back recoverable file versions are retained; it is separate from the amount of data that can be backed up.

Carbonite’s published capacity is different: its tiers list 250 GB or 500 GB, with additional storage available in 100 GB increments at a listed $99 per increment. If your data changes or grows, revisit the Carbonite storage allowance rather than assuming the device limit is the only constraint.

Does Carbonite Professional back up servers?

Yes. Carbonite’s Power tier lists one server, and Ultimate lists unlimited servers. The business comparison also lists Windows server support and bare-metal image backup and restore for the server-oriented plans; Core’s listed coverage is up to 25 computers, external drives, and NAS.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

For a business that needs to restore a server as a complete system rather than merely retrieve individual files, bare-metal image backup and restore is a material differentiator in the published feature matrix. Check the plan-specific matrix and quote against your server environment before purchase; the published facts here establish Windows server coverage, not support for every operating system or workload.

What administration and compliance controls are available?

Carbonite’s business matrix lists policy management and support for HIPAA, FERPA, and GLBA across its business plans. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not a substitute for checking whether a particular deployment, configuration, contract, or data-handling workflow satisfies your organization’s obligations.

Backblaze Business Backup lists centralized management. Its Enterprise Control offering adds legal hold, OIDC single sign-on, granular restore and access permissions, centralized user and device management, and backup lockdown controls. If any of these are mandatory, verify the specific Enterprise Control terms and availability for your account; the cited pricing page does not establish their price.

Need Published capability What to verify
Policy administration Carbonite lists policy management; Backblaze lists centralized management Whether the available controls map to your team’s roles and workflows
Legal hold or OIDC SSO Listed under Backblaze Enterprise Control Availability and pricing in your quote
Granular restore/access permissions or lockdown Listed under Backblaze Enterprise Control Which users can administer, restore, or access protected data
HIPAA, FERPA, or GLBA support Listed in Carbonite’s business matrix Whether your intended use and configuration meet your obligations

Which service is better for ransomware recovery?

Both services publish features relevant to recovery, but the claims describe different things. Carbonite says it can “Recover uninfected files within 2 weeks of a virus or malware event.” Backblaze Business Backup lists one-year version history. Neither statement alone establishes a guaranteed recovery time or proves that every affected system can be restored; confirm how each service’s recovery process applies to your incident plan.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

Carbonite support documentation gives different retention periods by product category: Safe Backup retention is 30 days, Safe Backup Pro retention is 60 days, and server retention is user-defined. Those figures should not be treated as a blanket retention promise for every Carbonite Professional backup. Confirm the retention that applies to the exact plan and data source you will use.

For an incident plan, distinguish three questions: how long earlier versions remain available, how quickly your organization can retrieve clean files, and whether a whole server image can be restored. The published Carbonite matrix includes bare-metal image backup and restore on its server-oriented plans; Backblaze’s stated one-year version history addresses version availability for Business Backup.

How should you choose a plan?

  1. List what must be protected. Count computers, identify any Windows servers, and note whether external drives or NAS devices are in scope. Do not assume that a computer count alone captures the cost of Carbonite’s shared capacity.
  2. Estimate the data footprint. Compare the team’s total protected data with Carbonite’s 250 GB Core or 500 GB Power and Ultimate allowances. For Backblaze, multiply the number of computers by its listed $99 annual per-computer price.
  3. Identify recovery requirements. If you need bare-metal image backup and restore or server coverage, compare the Power and Ultimate descriptions. If your priority is endpoint version access, account for Backblaze’s one-year version history.
  4. Check administration and compliance needs. Match required policy, legal hold, SSO, permissions, lockdown, or listed regulatory support to the vendor’s plan-specific feature list. Get clarification for any requirement the published descriptions do not resolve.
  5. Confirm written terms before committing. Verify current prices, added storage charges, retention for the exact product, feature availability, and any Enterprise Control charge, because vendor pricing and feature terms can change.

What are the main limitations to account for?

  • Carbonite capacity is shared and capped by tier. A bundle that covers enough devices may still need paid storage increments if the team’s combined data exceeds its allowance.
  • Backblaze’s per-computer model scales with headcount. Unlimited storage per device removes listed storage tiers, but the annual base charge increases with each computer.
  • Server needs narrow the comparison. Carbonite explicitly lists Windows server coverage and bare-metal restore for server-oriented tiers; Backblaze Business Backup’s cited description focuses on Mac and Windows endpoints.
  • Retention language is product-specific. Carbonite’s support documentation distinguishes Safe Backup, Safe Backup Pro, and server retention, so verify the exact product rather than transferring one retention period to another.
  • Compliance labels do not answer every compliance question. Carbonite lists support for three frameworks, but the appropriate configuration and contractual terms still need to be confirmed for the business’s use.

For most endpoint-only teams, Backblaze Business Backup is the cleaner choice when unlimited capacity per computer and predictable per-device pricing are priorities. For teams with Windows servers, a need for bare-metal recovery, or a strong fit with Carbonite’s bundled device and policy model, Carbonite Professional is more aligned—provided its storage limits work for the organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can either service back up Linux computers?

The published descriptions cited here specify Mac and Windows endpoint protection for Backblaze and Windows server support for Carbonite’s server-oriented tiers. They do not establish Linux endpoint support, so get written confirmation for the exact operating system and workload before relying on either service.

Does Backblaze Enterprise Control cost extra?

The available price listing gives $99 per year per computer for Business Backup but does not state an Enterprise Control price or whether it is bundled. Ask for a quote that identifies the controls included and any separate charge.

Does Carbonite’s listed compliance support guarantee my business is compliant?

No. A vendor’s statement that a service supports a framework does not by itself establish that your specific configuration, procedures, or contractual arrangements comply. Have your compliance lead verify the requirements for your use case.
