Windows 11 cannot take a software screenshot of a BIOS, UEFI, or boot screen on the physical PC. Those menus appear before Windows loads, so Snipping Tool, Win+Shift+S, PrtScn, and other Windows shortcuts do not exist yet. To document the real machine, photograph its monitor with a phone or record the video output with a compatible external capture device. If an exact physical screen is not required, boot the same media in a virtual machine and capture the VM window in Windows. The most universal choice is a carefully taken phone photo; an external capture device can be cleaner but requires compatible ports, resolution, refresh rate, and handshaking.
This guide explains how to enter firmware in Windows 11, capture fast-disappearing boot displays, preserve readable Secure Boot settings, and choose the method that matches your evidence requirements.

Why can’t Windows 11 screenshot a BIOS or UEFI screen?
BIOS or UEFI firmware is software that runs before Windows when the computer is turned on. The firmware initializes hardware and hands control to Windows Boot Manager and the operating-system loader. Windows screenshot utilities start only after that handoff, so there is no Windows process available to receive a keyboard shortcut while the firmware menu is visible.
This timing explains why pressing PrtScn appears to do nothing in setup. It is not normally a clipboard problem, a disabled Snipping Tool setting, or a missing driver. The screenshot program simply has not started. The same limitation applies to the manufacturer logo, a boot-device selection menu, and other pre-boot displays.

Microsoft describes firmware as “the software that runs before Windows when you turn on your PC.” Treat that phase as a separate environment: use a camera or capture hardware for the actual computer, or reproduce the environment in a virtual machine when an emulation is acceptable.
What is the best method for capturing the actual computer?
For a real BIOS/UEFI menu, a phone photograph is the dependable default. It works regardless of motherboard firmware, operating-system state, or whether Windows can sign in. An external capture device can produce a cleaner image, while a virtual machine is convenient for demonstrations but does not prove what the physical PC displayed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Method | Shows the physical machine? | Setup | Main quality risk | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone photograph | Yes | Phone and access to the monitor | Glare, reflections, moiré, focus, or a menu that disappears quickly | You need universal, immediate documentation |
| External video capture | Usually, if the firmware appears on that output | Compatible output, capture device, and recording computer | Unsupported resolution, refresh rate, protection, or signal handshaking | A readable, low-glare record matters more than minimal equipment |
| Virtual machine | No; it shows a reproduced or emulated environment | Virtualization software and bootable media | Firmware and hardware details differ from the target PC | You are making documentation or a demonstration, not proving a physical setting |
Choose based on fidelity, setup cost, glare and flicker, how quickly the display vanishes, and whether the method can handle the firmware’s resolution and refresh rate. Do not label a VM image as a photograph of the target computer.
How do I open UEFI Firmware Settings from Windows 11?
If Windows reaches the desktop or sign-in screen, Advanced startup provides a documented route to the firmware menu. The labels below are the current Windows 11 path; wording can vary slightly by edition or device manufacturer.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, find Advanced startup and select Restart now. Save open work first because the PC will reboot.
- At the blue recovery screen, choose Troubleshoot.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select UEFI Firmware Settings, then Restart.
The computer restarts directly into its firmware interface. From there you can navigate to the page you need, such as Secure Boot or boot order, before taking the picture or starting the recording.
Advanced startup is useful when the hotkey prompt is too brief or the keyboard is not recognized early enough. It also avoids guessing which key your manufacturer uses.

Use the manufacturer’s startup key instead. Turn on or restart the PC and repeatedly tap the key as soon as it begins powering on. Common examples are Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12, but the correct key depends on the device or motherboard.
Look for an on-screen message such as “Setup,” “BIOS,” or “Boot menu.” If the screen passes too quickly, consult the device manual or the manufacturer’s support documentation rather than changing keys at random. A setup key usually opens the full firmware interface; a boot-menu key may open only a temporary device list, which is useful for documenting boot choices but may not contain Secure Boot settings.

How do I photograph a BIOS or UEFI screen so the text is readable?
A careful phone photo is more useful than a hurried, distant snapshot. Set up the camera before entering firmware, then take several frames of each page.
Prepare the scene
- Clean the monitor and remove bright lights behind you. Reflections can hide small labels and checkbox states.
- Set the phone’s camera to a normal photo mode rather than portrait, panorama, or a filter that alters text.
- Disable flash if it reflects directly from the panel. Add soft room light from the side if the screen is too dark.
- Keep enough storage available for several full-resolution images.
- If another person is available, have them operate the keyboard while you frame the display.
Enter firmware and frame the display
- Open the firmware menu using Advanced startup or the manufacturer’s key.
- Hold the phone parallel to the monitor rather than shooting from above or below. A square, head-on angle reduces geometric distortion.
- Tap the text area on the phone screen to set focus and exposure. If the camera makes the white background too bright, lower exposure slightly; if dark text disappears, raise it.
- Fill most of the camera frame with the monitor while leaving a small border so no setting is cropped.
- Take multiple images without moving the phone far. Firmware screens can flicker or change when a menu is selected, and one frame may be sharper than the next.
Check before leaving the menu
Zoom in on the captured image while the firmware page is still visible. Confirm that the page title, relevant value, and any enabled or disabled indicator can be read. If a value is cut off, retake the image before navigating away. For a multi-page record, photograph the navigation path as well as the final setting so another person can identify where the value came from.
How can I capture a boot logo or message that disappears immediately?
Use a short sequence rather than waiting for a perfect single frame. Start the camera recording a video before pressing the power button, then extract a still frame later if your phone supports that workflow. Alternatively, use burst or rapid-photo mode while the machine starts. Video may be less sharp than a dedicated photograph, so capture a second still of any menu that remains on screen.
Keep the phone already unlocked and aimed at the monitor. Searching for the camera after the logo appears is usually too late. If the firmware offers a pause, setup, or boot-menu key, press it as soon as the prompt appears; do not change unrelated settings merely to hold the screen.
Some displays show a manufacturer logo before the firmware interface and a different message before Windows Boot Manager. Record the exact stage you need. A photo of the logo does not document Secure Boot status, and a boot-device list does not establish the configured boot order.
When is an external video capture device better than a phone?
An external capture device is worthwhile when glare, flicker, moiré, or tiny text makes photographs unreliable. It records the signal from a computer output and lets another computer display or save the feed. A USB HDMI video capture card is the common search term for this category, but no particular model is guaranteed to work with every firmware screen.
Check compatibility before entering setup
- Output path: Verify that the PC exposes the firmware or boot display on the port you plan to use. A connector that works once Windows loads is not proof that firmware is routed through it.
- Signal format: Check that the capture device accepts the firmware’s resolution and refresh rate. Firmware often uses a basic mode that differs from the desktop mode.
- Protection and handshaking: The display path must not require protection or a handshake the capture device cannot process. If the preview is black or repeatedly reconnects, this is a likely cause.
- Power and cabling: Connect the capture device and recording computer before rebooting. Secure cables so a loose connection does not interrupt the short pre-boot window.
Generic connection procedure
- Connect the computer’s compatible video output to the capture device input.
- Connect the capture device to the recording computer and open its preview or recording application.
- Select the capture device as the video source and confirm that a stable image appears at the expected format.
- Start recording before restarting the target PC.
- Enter firmware or select the boot screen, then stop recording after the required page has remained visible.
- Review the file at full size. Confirm that small labels and state indicators remain legible rather than relying on the preview thumbnail.
If the capture device displays the Windows desktop but not firmware, the motherboard may use a different output during pre-boot. Try another available output only if the manual identifies it as active during startup; do not assume every port mirrors the same signal.

Can I take a Windows screenshot of BIOS inside a virtual machine?
Yes, when a reproduced environment meets your purpose. Start a virtual machine such as VirtualBox, attach the bootable media or operating-system image, and capture the VM window with Windows 11’s normal tools. Because the VM runs inside Windows, Win+Shift+S, PrtScn, and other screenshot methods are available for that window.
This is appropriate for a tutorial, classroom demonstration, or documentation of a repeatable boot flow. It is not evidence of the exact physical computer’s firmware screen. A virtual machine can expose different firmware menus, virtual hardware, boot order, and Secure Boot implementation. Label the image as a VM capture and state which software and boot media produced it.
When a VM is the wrong substitute
- Use a physical photograph when you must prove a setting on a particular motherboard or laptop.
- Use the real machine when troubleshooting a display-output problem, because the VM does not reproduce the target’s ports or firmware configuration.
- Do not infer that a Secure Boot value in the VM describes the host PC.
How do I save a picture of Secure Boot settings?
Open the firmware interface, navigate to its Security or Boot area, and photograph or record the page that displays Secure Boot. The exact menu names and layout vary by manufacturer, so follow the labels shown on your system rather than a generic diagram.
- Enter UEFI through Settings > System > Recovery > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart, or use the manufacturer’s setup key.
- Locate the page containing Secure Boot. Photograph the page title and the value in the same frame.
- If the value is shown on a submenu, capture the parent menu first, then the detailed page.
- Take a second image if a key-management, platform-key, or operating-mode label is needed to interpret the status.
- Exit without saving unless you intentionally changed a setting and understand the startup consequences.
Secure Boot is tied to the firmware boot mode. Microsoft notes that some systems offer both UEFI and Legacy/CSM modes and may require UEFI to be first or the only option for Secure Boot. Changing Secure Boot or boot mode can prevent the expected operating system from starting, so documentation should not become an accidental configuration change.
What safety checks should I follow in firmware?
Entering setup is generally a viewing task, but firmware menus often place configuration controls beside the information you need. Use these safeguards:
- Photograph the original value before changing anything.
- Do not select “Save and Exit” after experimenting unless the change is deliberate.
- Change only the required field, one item at a time.
- Keep recovery media and the device manual available when a boot-mode change is unavoidable.
- Remember that changing boot order can make the PC start from a different disk or removable device.
- If the system uses Legacy/CSM and you are considering UEFI-only mode, verify that the installed operating system supports the new mode before applying it.
If you are documenting a support case, record the date, device model, firmware page name, and whether the image came from a physical monitor or a VM. These details help distinguish a real configuration from a demonstration.

Why is my photo blurry, flickering, or covered in lines?
Different defects point to different fixes. Reframe and retake the image before assuming the firmware is unreadable.
Reflections or glare
Move the phone or the room light, not the monitor menu. Keep the lens parallel to the panel and turn off direct flash. A slight change in camera position can remove a reflection without distorting the text.

Moiré or horizontal bands
The phone sensor and monitor refresh cycle can interfere, producing stripes or ripples. Try a different distance, use the phone’s standard photo mode, and take several frames. If the problem persists, an external capture device may provide a cleaner signal.
Motion blur
Brace your hands against the desk or use a small stand. Increase available room light so the camera can use a faster shutter, but avoid placing a bright lamp in the screen’s reflection path.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does an external capture preview show a black screen?
First determine whether the firmware signal reaches the chosen output. If the capture device works only after Windows starts, the PC may route pre-boot video elsewhere. Next check the capture device’s accepted resolution and refresh rate against the firmware output. Finally, reseat cables and allow the device to renegotiate the signal before restarting.
Unsupported protection or handshaking can also produce a black or unstable preview. The available data does not establish a universal workaround for those cases; use another compatible output or return to a phone photograph when the signal path cannot be verified. Do not treat a blank capture file as proof that the firmware showed a blank screen.
How should I organize and verify captured images?
Save the original files rather than only compressed screenshots. Use a descriptive filename containing the device, page, and capture date, such as laptop-uefi-secure-boot-2026-10-26.jpg. Keep a separate copy if the image will be attached to a support ticket.
- Check that the entire page is visible and the important value is legible at normal zoom.
- Keep the original resolution and avoid messaging apps that aggressively recompress photos.
- Record whether the image is a phone photograph, capture-device frame, or VM screenshot.
- For a sequence, number files in navigation order so a reviewer can follow the path.
- Crop only copies; retain the uncropped original in case context is later needed.
Phone images can contain metadata such as capture time and location. Remove sensitive metadata before public posting if privacy matters, but retain an unmodified copy for internal records.
Which method should I choose for common situations?
| Situation | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Windows works and you need the real Secure Boot value | Advanced startup, then a phone photo | It reaches the exact machine and requires no extra video hardware. |
| The boot logo vanishes before you can frame it | Prepare the phone first; use video or burst capture | Recording begins before power-on and preserves a fleeting display. |
| Glare makes small firmware text unreadable | Change lighting and angle; use external capture if necessary | Both approaches address optical artifacts without altering firmware. |
| You need a polished training illustration | Virtual-machine capture | A VM window is easy to capture and repeat, provided it is labeled as reproduced. |
| The operating system will not boot | Manufacturer startup key and phone photo | Advanced startup is unavailable, while a camera works independently of Windows. |
| You need evidence for a particular motherboard | Physical photograph or verified physical video capture | A VM cannot establish the target hardware’s firmware state. |
What should I do if the firmware key does not work?
Try a complete shutdown rather than a fast restart, then begin tapping the documented key immediately after powering on. On some keyboards, function keys require an Fn modifier; a wired keyboard may be recognized earlier than a wireless one. If Windows starts every time, use the Advanced startup path instead.

What are the limits of each capture method?
A phone photo is universal but depends on optics, lighting, and readable focus. It can also include reflections or a partial view if the camera is angled. External capture reduces those optical problems but introduces compatibility checks and additional equipment; the firmware may not be present on the selected output. A VM is the easiest to capture in Windows but represents virtual hardware, not the exact physical firmware.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Snipping Tool after entering BIOS and paste the image later?
No. Snipping Tool can capture only windows rendered after Windows has loaded. Take the photograph or record the output while the firmware page is visible; you cannot reconstruct the original screen from the Windows clipboard afterward.
Will a screenshot of a virtual machine prove that my PC has Secure Boot enabled?
No. The VM has its own virtual firmware and settings. Use the physical computer’s UEFI page for evidence about that computer, and label a VM image as a reproduction.
How can I identify which firmware screen I photographed?
Include the page title and surrounding navigation in the frame, then keep files in navigation order. A filename with the device, page, and date provides additional context when several screens look similar.
