To cancel ChatGPT, use the platform that bills you: ChatGPT’s website, Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or a self-service Business workspace. Website subscribers cancel in Settings → Billing → Cancel plan; Apple subscribers use iPhone or iPad Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription; Google Play subscribers use Google Play → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription; Business users use Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan → Cancel subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Your paid features normally continue through the current billing period, and a refund requires a separate request.
How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus or Pro?
The correct cancellation path depends on where you started the subscription. Your ChatGPT login and your billing platform are related, but they are not interchangeable: a plan purchased through Apple must be canceled through Apple, while a web purchase must be canceled in ChatGPT.

Cancel a subscription purchased on the ChatGPT website
Use this route for Plus or Pro plans paid for directly on the web.
- Sign in to ChatGPT at the website you normally use.
- Open the account menu and select Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel and follow the confirmation prompts.
After confirming, keep the cancellation confirmation and note the next billing date shown in your account. If the Billing section does not show a plan, you may be signed in to a different ChatGPT account or the subscription may be managed by Apple or Google Play instead.

Cancel through Apple on an iPhone or iPad
Apple controls subscriptions purchased in the App Store, so deleting the ChatGPT app or changing settings inside ChatGPT does not end the App Store billing.
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If you see an expiration date but no Cancel Subscription button, Apple may already have recorded the cancellation. The subscription remains listed so you can use it until the displayed expiration date.

Use the Google account that made the purchase. A different Google account, even on the same phone, may show no ChatGPT subscription.
- Open the Google Play app.
- Open your profile or account menu and choose Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Choose Cancel subscription and complete the prompts.
You can also manage the plan from the Google Play subscriptions website while signed in to the purchasing Google account. Save the confirmation screen or email. If ChatGPT is absent from the list, check other Google accounts before assuming the plan is canceled.
Cancel a self-service ChatGPT Business subscription
For a self-service Business workspace, the person who can manage workspace billing must cancel the plan.
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Workspace settings.
- Select Billing.
- Choose Manage plan.
- Select Cancel subscription and confirm.
If you cannot see workspace billing settings, ask the workspace owner to complete the cancellation. A regular workspace member cannot use an individual account’s settings to cancel the workspace plan.

Which cancellation path applies to me?
Use the platform that appears on your payment record. This comparison shows where to cancel, where to ask for a refund, and what account deletion does in each case.

The table reflects ordinary monthly or annual cancellation behavior; the exact end date is the date shown by the platform managing your payment.
When should I cancel to avoid another charge?
Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. That buffer matters because a cancellation submitted shortly before renewal may reach the billing system after the next payment has already started processing.
Cancellation stops future renewals, not the period you have already paid for. In ordinary cases, Plus, Pro, or Business features remain available until the end of the active billing period. The platform may continue to display an active plan during that time; that is not necessarily a failed cancellation.
- Find the next billing date before you cancel.
- Submit the cancellation more than 24 hours before that date.
- Save the confirmation message, email, or screenshot.
- Check the plan status again after cancellation and note the scheduled expiration.
If you are canceling to prevent a renewal, do not wait for the last day. Time-zone differences, payment processing, and delayed confirmation can make a last-minute cancellation risky.
Does deleting the ChatGPT app or account cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling the ChatGPT app only removes the app from your device; it does not send a cancellation request to any billing platform.

Deleting your ChatGPT account does cancel subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT, but it does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription. For an Apple plan, cancel in Apple’s Subscriptions screen before deleting the ChatGPT account. For Google Play, verify cancellation in the Google account that made the purchase before deleting the ChatGPT account. If you delete first, recovering the store subscription can be more difficult because the store account, not the ChatGPT app installation, controls billing.
Keep the cancellation confirmation and any refund correspondence before deleting an account. Account deletion is permanent and is unnecessary if your only goal is to stop renewal.
How do ChatGPT refunds work after cancellation?
Cancellation and refund are separate actions. Canceling prevents future renewals; it does not automatically return money for a charge that already happened.
Web and Google Play purchases
For a purchase made on the ChatGPT website or through Google Play, request a refund through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account associated with the charge. Explain the charge date, the platform used, and that you have canceled or want the charge reviewed. Eligibility depends on the applicable policy and the facts of the purchase.
OpenAI’s refund guidance says accidental web purchases are generally eligible when requested within 14 days of the charge, subject to its policies. That is a request window, not an automatic guarantee. A charge outside that window may still be reviewed, but you should not assume it qualifies.
Apple purchases
Apple processes App Store payments and refunds. Submit the refund request directly to Apple rather than using the ChatGPT web billing page. Apple may ask for the Apple account, transaction details, and a reason for the request.

What to include in a refund request
- The email address for the ChatGPT account connected with the charge.
- The purchase platform: web, Apple, or Google Play.
- The date and amount of the charge.
- The cancellation date and confirmation, if you canceled before contacting support.
- Any relevant transaction or receipt identifier, without exposing unnecessary payment data.
Never send a full payment-card number in a support message. Use only the details the billing platform requests.
What should I do if I was charged after canceling?
First determine whether the charge is a late renewal, a second subscription, or a payment from another account. A cancellation made less than 24 hours before renewal may not stop a payment already being processed.
- Open the platform where you canceled and check the cancellation status and next billing or expiration date.
- Compare the charge date with the time you submitted the cancellation.
- Check ChatGPT Billing, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions for another active plan.
- Check other ChatGPT logins, Apple IDs, or Google accounts you may have used.
- Save receipts and confirmation messages, then contact the correct refund channel.
If the charge is valid under the platform’s timing rules, cancellation alone will not reverse it; submit a separate refund request. If you find two active plans, cancel the unwanted one on its own billing platform and request review of any duplicate charge.
How can I avoid duplicate ChatGPT subscriptions when switching platforms?
Subscribing on more than one platform can create multiple active subscriptions and multiple charges. This commonly happens when someone moves from an App Store purchase to a web purchase without first checking the original Apple or Google Play plan.
- Before starting a replacement plan, inspect ChatGPT Billing, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions.
- Identify which platform currently shows an active ChatGPT plan.
- Cancel the old plan on that platform and record its expiration date.
- Wait until you understand when the old paid period ends before starting another plan, unless you intentionally accept overlapping billing.
- When you subscribe on the new platform, use the ChatGPT account you intend to keep using and save the new receipt.
The ChatGPT account you sign in with and the store account that pays are separate identifiers. Confirm both before you purchase.

For a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, contact OpenAI Support and explain that you cannot access the account. Provide the account or billing email and any two of the following: the last four digits of the payment card, the card expiration date, the billing address, or the date of the most recent charge.

Do not provide the full card number. Support may need enough information to locate the subscription while protecting the payment account.
If the subscription was purchased through Apple or Google Play, recover the Apple ID or Google account used for the purchase and cancel through that store. ChatGPT Support cannot replace the store’s cancellation controls.

Cancellation is most useful when the subscription no longer matches how you use ChatGPT. Common reasons include:
- Reducing recurring costs: canceling stops the next automatic renewal while preserving access through the paid period.
- Low usage: if you rarely use paid features, a free plan may cover your current needs.
- Switching platforms: moving between web, Apple, and Google Play requires checking the old platform first to avoid overlapping subscriptions.
- Preventing duplicate billing: multiple active subscriptions can exist when purchases are made under different accounts or platforms.
- Changing workspaces: a Business plan may no longer be needed after a team changes its tools or billing owner.
Canceling does not require deleting your account. If you may return later, leaving the account intact avoids the separate consequences of permanent account deletion.

- Identify whether the charge comes from ChatGPT, Apple, Google Play, or a Business workspace.
- Use that platform’s exact cancellation menu.
- Cancel more than 24 hours before the next billing date.
- Record the confirmation and the paid-access expiration date.
- Keep using the service through the current paid period if needed.
- Request any refund separately through the correct billing channel.
- Check every platform and account for duplicate subscriptions before buying a replacement plan.
- Do not rely on uninstalling the app to stop billing.

Use the Google account that originally paid for ChatGPT. If you have several accounts on the device, switch between them in Google Play and inspect each account’s Subscriptions page; the ChatGPT login alone does not identify the paying Google account.
Can I ask for a refund without deleting my ChatGPT account?
Yes. Refund requests are handled separately from account deletion, and deleting the account is unnecessary. Submit the request to the platform that processed the payment and keep the account available until the request is resolved.
