World of Warcraft Housing purchases are mainly account-level digital entitlements, but two gates matter: owning the Midnight expansion to buy a home or join a Neighborhood, and having an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time to use decor. Houses and decor collections are shared across your Warband, and race or faction usually does not prevent use. Refunds are different: Blizzard has documented compensation for a specific price adjustment, but that is not a blanket promise that every mistaken Housing purchase can be refunded.
This FAQ separates expansion access, subscription requirements, Warband sharing, faction-themed architecture, Hearthsteel purchases and the limited refund guidance Blizzard has published.

What do I need before buying or using WoW Housing?
To purchase a home or join a Neighborhood, you need Midnight. Players without the expansion can still visit Neighborhoods and collect some Housing items from activities and vendors, but Blizzard says they cannot purchase a home or join a Neighborhood without the expansion.
Decor has an additional requirement. Blizzard’s promotional terms say Housing decor requires a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. In practical terms, owning Midnight opens the home-purchase and Neighborhood features, while subscription or game-time access is required to use the decor system in the live game.

| What you want to do | Midnight required? | Subscription or game time? | What Blizzard’s guidance means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visit a Neighborhood | No | Not stated for visiting | Players without the expansion may visit. |
| Collect some Housing items from activities or vendors | No | Not stated for collection | Players without the expansion may collect some items. |
| Purchase a home | Yes | Not separately stated | The expansion is required. |
| Join a Neighborhood | Yes | Not separately stated | The expansion is required. |
| Use Housing decor | Yes, for the Housing feature set | Yes | Blizzard’s terms require both expansion access and a World of Warcraft subscription or game time. |
The distinction matters when an account can see Housing content but cannot complete a purchase. Visiting a Neighborhood or earning an item does not, by itself, grant the right to buy a home or become a Neighborhood member.
Can my other WoW characters use the Housing items I bought?
Yes. Blizzard describes Housing as shared across a Warband. A house is not restricted to the character who purchased or unlocked it, and the decor collection is available to characters in that Warband regardless of which character earned a reward.

Characters can also come and go from the same house. The entitlement is therefore broader than a character-only appearance unlock, although access still depends on the account meeting the expansion and game-time requirements described above.
Can Horde and Alliance characters share a house?
Yes. Blizzard gives cross-faction examples: an Orc can use an Alliance house, and an Alliance character and a Horde character can each own one house in either the Horde or Alliance Neighborhood zones.
The important qualification is that cross-faction access does not make Neighborhood architecture interchangeable. A house can be used by characters from either faction, but the surrounding Neighborhood retains its own visual identity. An Alliance Neighborhood uses Alliance architecture, a Horde Neighborhood uses Horde architecture, and neutral architecture can appear in either type of Neighborhood.

Think of faction as an architectural and Neighborhood-theme choice, not a lock on which characters may use the home. Your character’s race or faction does not automatically invalidate a house obtained in the other faction’s zone.
Do race restrictions affect WoW Housing purchases?
Race is not a general ownership restriction in Blizzard’s Housing guidance. The explicit Orc-in-an-Alliance-house example shows that a character does not need to match the faction associated with the home’s Neighborhood.
Race-specific limitations could still apply to an individual activity, reward or cosmetic rule if Blizzard introduces one, but the published Housing rules do not establish a race lock for buying or using a home. If a character cannot use something, first check whether the limitation is tied to the particular item or to the Neighborhood’s architecture rather than assuming the entire Housing system is race restricted.
What exactly is being purchased: a house, decor or Hearthsteel?
Housing combines an expansion entitlement, a large earnable collection and a smaller paid-shop component. Blizzard says the vast majority of Housing items can be earned in-game; only a small fraction is sold through the shop.
Expansion entitlement
Midnight is the purchase that unlocks the ability to buy a home and join a Neighborhood. Without it, a player can still have limited contact with Housing content, including visiting and collecting some items, but not home ownership or Neighborhood membership.

Earnable Housing items
Activities and vendors provide much of the collection. These rewards do not represent a separate paid currency purchase, and the character that earns one does not have to be the character that later decorates the Warband’s house.
Shop Housing items
Paid decor uses Hearthsteel, Blizzard’s virtual Housing currency. Hearthsteel is purchased with real money through Battle.net balance and then spent on Housing items in the Battle.net or in-game shop. A current 2026 decor-pack article states an exchange rate of 100 Hearthsteel per $1; that figure is Blizzard’s stated rate and can change, so check the shop at the time of purchase.
Blizzard’s stated shop policy is that Housing items should be available for individual purchase even when a limited-time bundle or sale is offered. A bundle may change the presentation or price of a promotion, but the policy is not that a player must buy a bundle to obtain every shop item.
A promotional decor page that listed availability through September 30, 2026 is now past that date. Do not treat that old window as proof that the promotion remains active; shop inventory and promotional periods are time-sensitive.
How should I choose between the different Housing payment layers?
Match the purchase to the feature you are trying to unlock rather than treating every Housing item as the same kind of entitlement.

- You want to own a home or join a Neighborhood: verify that Midnight is attached to the account.
- You want to place or use decor: verify Midnight and an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time.
- You want a non-shop item: look at the relevant in-game activity or vendor; most Housing items are earnable.
- You want a shop item: check its Hearthsteel price in the Battle.net or in-game shop and confirm whether the listing is an individual item or a bundle.
- You are buying for several characters: remember that the house and decor collection are Warband-shared, so a second character generally does not need a duplicate purchase.
This separation also helps explain apparent inconsistencies. An account may be able to earn an item without being eligible to purchase a house, while a shop purchase may be visible but unusable until the account has the required game access.
Can I refund a WoW Housing item?
Do not assume that every Housing purchase is automatically refundable. Blizzard’s published material confirms a specific price-adjustment remedy, while the ordinary refund rules for an individual Housing transaction require an authenticated Support check and may depend on the product, transaction and region.
For an ordinary mistaken or unwanted purchase, open Blizzard Support, sign in, use the payments or refunds category, and submit the request for the specific transaction. The public support page exposes a refund-request path, but the detailed United States refund article requires login; without seeing the authenticated account and transaction, it is not possible to promise approval, a deadline or a cash refund.

Blizzard has documented compensation for an affected price adjustment. In the published decor-pack update, players who bought an affected item or pack before the adjustment were to receive either additional items or a refund of Hearthsteel equal to the difference in price.

That remedy is tied to the named adjustment; it is not evidence of a standing price-protection policy for every future sale. It also describes Hearthsteel compensation, not an automatic cash refund. If you believe a specific purchase was covered, compare the original and revised listing, retain the transaction record and contact Support if the promised adjustment does not appear.
What should I check when Housing access or a purchase appears blocked?
Use this order so that an account entitlement problem is not confused with a faction or item restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the expansion: check the Battle.net account that contains the character and verify that Midnight is owned. Without it, home purchase and Neighborhood membership are unavailable.
- Confirm game time: if decor will not load or cannot be used, verify that the account has an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time, as required by Blizzard’s decor terms.
- Check the Warband: make sure the character is in the Warband that owns the house or collection. A reward earned by another character should be available through the shared collection, not as a separate character-only unlock.
- Check the Neighborhood theme: an Alliance or Horde architectural style is determined by the Neighborhood. A cross-faction character can use the home, but the exterior theme does not switch to the other faction’s architecture merely because the visitor is from that faction.
- Separate earnable and paid content: determine whether the item comes from an activity or vendor, or from the Hearthsteel shop. The troubleshooting path and any refund request differ.
- Contact authenticated Support: for a transaction or entitlement mismatch, sign in to Blizzard Support, choose the payments/refunds area when appropriate and provide the exact item, pack, region and transaction information.
What are the most common Housing purchase misunderstandings?
- “I can visit, so I can buy a house.” Visiting and collecting some items are available without Midnight; buying a home and joining a Neighborhood are not.
- “The character who earned it must be the decorator.” Housing rewards and collections are shared across the Warband.
- “Horde characters can only use Horde houses.” Blizzard’s example explicitly allows an Orc to use an Alliance house; the faction distinction primarily controls Neighborhood architecture.
- “Every shop item is a paid-only collection.” Blizzard says most Housing items are earnable in-game and only a small fraction is sold in the shop.
- “A lower price guarantees money back.” The documented case provides additional items or Hearthsteel equal to a specific price difference; ordinary refund eligibility still requires Support review.
How we interpret the purchase rules
The safest way to understand Housing is to treat it as three separate layers: account access, Warband collection ownership and transaction-specific shop support. Blizzard’s Housing overview and Early Access notes establish the expansion gate; its promotional terms establish the subscription or game-time requirement for decor; and its price-adjustment update establishes the limited compensation example. Where Blizzard has not published a universal rule, the account’s authenticated Support decision controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Housing decor in WoW Classic?
No published Housing promotion makes the decor available in Classic games. The relevant Blizzard terms identify the item as unavailable in Classic and tie use to the live World of Warcraft subscription or game-time requirement.
Is Hearthsteel the same thing as game time?
No. Hearthsteel is a virtual currency spent on Housing items, purchased through Battle.net balance. It does not replace the subscription or game-time access required to use decor.
Do I have to buy a Housing bundle to get a shop item?
Blizzard’s stated shop philosophy is that shop Housing items should be offered for individual purchase, even when bundles or sales are displayed. Check the current listing because prices, availability and promotion windows can change.
Will a refund request return cash if my purchase was wrong?
There is no blanket promise of a cash refund for every Housing transaction. The documented price-adjustment example uses additional items or Hearthsteel equal to the difference, while an ordinary request is evaluated through the authenticated Support process for that transaction and region.
