Yes. Xbox Cloud Gaming works with compatible controllers over Bluetooth or USB, and it also supports keyboard-and-mouse play in games that explicitly offer that input mode. A controller is still the safest choice because Xbox says most cloud games require a gamepad. Keyboard and mouse are available on supported titles through Edge or Chrome (and on supported app/device paths), with availability varying by game, device, region, and Game Pass plan.
This guide explains which controllers work, how to connect each input, how to identify keyboard-and-mouse games, and what to check when a device is recognized but a game will not respond.

Xbox Cloud Gaming supports compatible gamepads connected wirelessly or by cable. Keyboard and mouse are supported only when the streamed game exposes that control scheme. Connecting a keyboard and mouse to your computer does not automatically make every cloud game playable with them.
| Input | How it connects | Where it works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Bluetooth or USB | Most controller-playable cloud games on supported devices | Controller icon on the game page and a supported device |
| Xbox Adaptive Controller | Compatible wired or wireless setup | Games that accept controller input | Device compatibility and any attached accessibility switches |
| PlayStation DualSense | Bluetooth or USB, where the host device supports it | Controller-playable games | Pairing support on the phone, computer, browser, or TV |
| PlayStation DualShock 4 | Bluetooth or USB, where supported by the host | Controller-playable games | Host-device pairing and the game’s controller indicator |
| Keyboard and mouse | USB or Bluetooth through a supported device and browser/app | Only titles with mouse-and-keyboard support | Mouse-and-keyboard badge or support indicator for that title |
Xbox’s 2025 getting-started guidance states: “Most games require a gamepad to be connected to your device, either wired or wirelessly.” Its cloud FAQ requires a compatible controller for controller-playable games. Xbox also lists verified manufacturers including 8BitDo, GameSir, and Backbone; the exact model still has to be recognized by your host device.

How do I use a controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Pair or plug in the controller before launching the stream, then open a game that shows controller support. The same basic process works on a computer, phone, tablet, console, television, or handheld, although the Bluetooth menus differ.
Connect over Bluetooth
- Put the controller in pairing mode. On an Xbox Wireless Controller, hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Open your device’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller when it appears. Finish pairing before opening the cloud-gaming session.
- Open the Xbox Cloud Gaming service or supported Xbox app, sign in, and choose a title with the controller icon.
- Press a button when the stream appears. If the game displays a prompt or responds to movement, the connection is active.
Connect by USB
- Use a data-capable USB cable, not a charge-only cable, and connect the controller directly to the computer, phone, tablet, console, or supported streaming device.
- Allow any operating-system prompt to access the accessory. On a phone or tablet, use the correct USB adapter if the device has a USB-C or Lightning port.
- Start the cloud session after the operating system recognizes the gamepad. Wired input avoids Bluetooth pairing but still depends on the host device supporting that controller.
Use a mobile controller
Phones and tablets are usually easiest with a Bluetooth gamepad or a controller designed to attach to the handset. Backbone and other verified manufacturers are named by Xbox as examples, but compatibility can vary by phone operating system, connector, and controller model. Check that the model is recognized by the phone before launching the game.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming work with a keyboard and mouse?
Yes, but only for games that support that input mode. Xbox began rolling out cloud keyboard-and-mouse support in May 2024. The documented browser route is to open Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, sign in, and select a game marked for mouse and keyboard. The Xbox PC app shows a corresponding badge for supported titles.
Xbox initially described a rollout covering 25 titles, including Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, and The Sims 4. In 2025, Xbox reported that more than 130 cloud games had mouse-and-keyboard support. Those figures describe Xbox’s supported catalog at the cited times, not a promise that every listed title remains available in every country or Game Pass plan.

Start a keyboard-and-mouse session in a browser
- Connect the keyboard and mouse to the computer. USB devices can be plugged in directly; Bluetooth devices must be paired in the operating system first.
- Open xbox.com/play in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Xbox’s documented rollout specifically names these browsers for mouse-and-keyboard cloud play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the game, then browse for a title carrying the mouse-and-keyboard indicator.
- Launch the game and click inside the stream if necessary. Pressing a keyboard key activates mouse-and-keyboard input in supported sessions.
- Use the game’s own control settings to remap keys, adjust sensitivity, or change other options when those settings are available.
A keyboard and mouse can remain connected while a controller is paired. The game must support both modes for seamless switching; a title that supports only one input will continue to ignore the other.
How do I switch between keyboard-and-mouse and a controller?
In a game that supports both schemes, press any keyboard key to activate keyboard-and-mouse input. Press the Xbox button on the controller to switch back. Xbox documents this as an in-session change, so you do not normally need to quit and relaunch the stream.
Recommended Free Tools
If switching does not happen, click the game window to give it focus, move the mouse, and press a key again. Then verify that the title has the mouse-and-keyboard badge; a controller-only game will not accept the keyboard simply because both accessories are connected.
Which devices and browsers support cloud gaming input?
Xbox lists cloud gaming on Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs and streaming devices, handhelds, Meta Quest, and Steam Deck beta support. Browser play is documented for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS, and Steam Deck, while apps cover consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, televisions, and Meta Quest. Exact availability is controlled by region, device, game, and subscription plan.

| Device category | Most practical input | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC or Mac | Controller; keyboard and mouse in Edge or Chrome for marked games | Browser, operating-system, and title support must all line up |
| Chromebook | Bluetooth/USB controller; keyboard and mouse in Chrome for marked games | ChromeOS support and the game’s input badge are required |
| Android phone or tablet | Bluetooth or attached mobile controller | Screen size, Bluetooth support, and the current Xbox app/browser path vary by device |
| iPhone or iPad | Bluetooth or compatible wired controller | Use the supported browser route and confirm current regional availability |
| Xbox console | Controller | Cloud catalog and app availability depend on account and plan |
| Smart TV or streaming device | Compatible Bluetooth or USB controller | TV model, app availability, and accessory support differ |
| Handheld or Steam Deck | Built-in controls or paired controller | Steam Deck cloud support is identified by Xbox as beta; browser and game support can change |
For televisions, phones, and tablets, a gamepad is generally more dependable than trying to attach a full keyboard and mouse. On a computer, keyboard-and-mouse play is most straightforward because USB ports, Bluetooth settings, and Edge or Chrome are readily available.
What subscription or account do I need?
Supported free-to-play cloud games can be played with a free Microsoft account. Access to the broader cloud catalog requires a supported Game Pass plan, and the available games depend on the plan, region, and date. A title can therefore support your controller or keyboard technically while still being unavailable to your account.

Before troubleshooting an accessory, sign in to the intended account and confirm that the game appears in the cloud catalog. If it is missing, the issue may be catalog or plan availability rather than input compatibility.
How can I tell whether a game supports my input?
Use the indicators on the game’s Xbox Cloud Gaming listing. A controller icon identifies controller support; a mouse-and-keyboard badge identifies titles that expose that mode. Treat the indicators separately: seeing one does not imply the other.

Support can also vary between the cloud version and a locally installed version. A PC game that accepts keyboard and mouse when installed may still be controller-only when streamed unless Xbox marks the cloud version for keyboard and mouse.
What should I do when the controller, keyboard, or mouse is not working?
The controller is not detected
- Reconnect the USB cable or remove and re-pair the Bluetooth device in the operating system.
- Close other games or remote-play apps that may have captured the controller.
- Launch a title showing the controller icon; controller input is not guaranteed in every cloud game.
- Try the controller on another supported device. If it works there, the original host’s Bluetooth, USB adapter, or driver is the likely cause.
The keyboard and mouse work in the desktop but not in the game
- Confirm that the game has the mouse-and-keyboard badge. Without that flag, the stream will ignore those inputs.
- Use Edge or Chrome for the documented browser flow, and click inside the stream before pressing a key.
- Disconnect or stop moving the controller temporarily, then press a keyboard key to activate mouse-and-keyboard mode.
- Check the game’s control settings after it loads; some titles do not enable their keyboard layout until a key is pressed.
Input stops after switching
- Press a key to return focus to keyboard and mouse, or press the Xbox button to return to the controller.
- Make sure the session is still active and that the browser tab has not lost focus.
- If the title supports only one input type, use that device instead of trying to switch.
Which setup is best for a phone, PC, or TV?
Phone or tablet
Choose a Bluetooth gamepad or an attached mobile controller. The compact format avoids placing a keyboard and mouse on a small touchscreen, and it works with the many cloud titles that require a gamepad.
Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook
Keep a compatible controller available for the widest catalog, then use a keyboard and mouse for titles carrying the specific support badge. Edge or Chrome provides the documented browser path for that mode.
TV or streaming device
Use a compatible wireless controller unless the device explicitly supports the required keyboard-and-mouse connection and app behavior. TV accessory support varies more than computer support, so verify pairing before subscribing or buying additional hardware.

Is a controller or keyboard and mouse the better choice?
| Decision factor | Controller | Keyboard and mouse |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog breadth | Works with most controller-playable cloud games | Limited to titles with the dedicated support badge |
| Connection options | Bluetooth or USB | USB or Bluetooth, depending on the host device |
| Best fit | Phones, tablets, TVs, consoles, handhelds, and general couch play | PC, Mac, or Chromebook browser sessions and games designed for mouse aiming |
| Switching | Press the Xbox button to return to controller mode when both modes are supported | Press a keyboard key to activate mouse-and-keyboard mode when both modes are supported |
| Extra purchase | No new hardware if you already own a compatible gamepad | No new hardware if your computer already has a supported keyboard and mouse |
For most people, start with a compatible controller and add keyboard-and-mouse play only for games whose listing confirms it. This approach avoids buying accessories for a mode that a particular title does not expose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS5 DualSense controller with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox names the PlayStation DualSense as a compatible controller family for cloud gaming. Pair it to the host device by Bluetooth or USB, then select a game that shows controller support; the host device still has to recognize the controller first.
Why does my keyboard work in Chrome but not in a cloud game?
Browser recognition alone is not enough. Xbox enables keyboard-and-mouse controls on a title-by-title basis, so a game without that support indicator will continue to expect a gamepad.
Can I play supported free-to-play cloud games without paying for Game Pass?
Yes. Xbox says supported free-to-play cloud games can be launched with a free Microsoft account. Paid-catalog cloud access still requires a supported Game Pass plan, and the exact catalog depends on region and plan.
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming support Steam Deck?
Xbox identifies Steam Deck cloud gaming as beta support. Use the documented browser route where available, and expect device, browser, and game support to change as the beta evolves.
