Can You Use an Old MagSafe Charger With a New iPhone?

An old MagSafe Charger can charge many newer iPhones, but the phone, charger part number and adapter determine whether it supports the listed peak wireless speed.

Yes—an older Apple MagSafe Charger can charge many newer iPhones. Whether it reaches the phone’s fastest supported wireless charging rate depends on the iPhone model, the charger’s part number and the power adapter. Basic charging compatibility does not mean every old charger-and-adapter combination supports the newer phone’s peak rate.

Which iPhones can an older MagSafe Charger charge?

Apple says most iPhone models can charge with MagSafe Charger and lists compatibility through the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. The same charger can also charge some Qi-compatible iPhones that do not have MagSafe, including iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X, iPhone XS models, iPhone XR and iPhone 8 models. On those Qi phones, charging power and charge times differ from MagSafe configurations. Apple’s compatibility and setup guide has the model-specific details.

Charging and magnetic attachment are separate: a Qi-compatible phone may charge on the pad without snapping into MagSafe alignment. Apple describes magnetic alignment as a feature of supported iPhone or MagSafe-case combinations. A case is not necessary for a bare compatible iPhone to charge; it may matter if you want magnetic attachment through a case.

Will an old charger charge a new iPhone more slowly?

Possibly. Apple’s listed peak rates depend on the exact iPhone, MagSafe Charger part number and adapter output. Its current guide identifies A2140 for up to 15W with iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier, subject to the specified adapter requirements. Selected newer iPhones can reach higher peaks with newer listed charger models and a suitable adapter. Actual power can vary with the iPhone model, adapter and system conditions.

  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.
iPhone models Apple-listed MagSafe configuration Peak rate in that configuration
iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro Max Charger A3502, A3503, A2580 or A3250; adapter rated 30W or greater and delivering at least 15V/2.0A Up to 25W
iPhone Air Newer charger and adapter configuration described by Apple for faster wireless charging Up to 20W peak
iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Newer charger and adapter configuration described by Apple for faster wireless charging Up to 22.5W peak
iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier Charger A2140 with a 20W-or-greater USB-C adapter meeting Apple’s stated output requirements Up to 15W; iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini are up to 12W under the stated adapter condition

These are Apple’s product specifications for the stated combinations, not a promise that a phone will continuously draw the peak rate. The charger can function with an adapter as low as 12W (5V/2.4A), but Apple says charging will be slower. See Apple’s MagSafe Charger guide for the part numbers and output conditions.

What adapter do you need?

Apple’s general fast-wireless-charging guidance calls for an iPhone 16 or later, a MagSafe Charger and a 30W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or comparable USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) adapter. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple specifies a MagSafe Charger and a 20W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or comparable USB-PD adapter for up to 15W. The detailed charger guide gives additional output requirements for particular charger-and-phone combinations. Apple’s fast-charge guidance explains the adapter category requirements.

Apple MagSafe Charger (1 m): Wireless Charger with Fast-Charging Capability
  • The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
  • The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.

Those requirements describe faster charging setups; they do not mean an older MagSafe Charger is automatically incompatible with a newer iPhone. If it charges but does not reach the listed peak, check the charger model and adapter before assuming the phone cannot use it.

How to check your existing setup

  1. Identify the iPhone model. Use Settings > General > About, or check the model name in Apple’s device information.
  2. Find the charger part number. Check the charger or cable where the number is printed. Apple’s guide references A2140 and A2580, A3250, A3502 and A3503.
  3. Read the adapter’s output. Check its wattage and voltage/current profile on the adapter label. Compare it with Apple’s requirement for the phone and charger combination, rather than relying on wattage alone.
  4. Separate charging from magnetic alignment. If a Qi-compatible phone charges but does not attach magnetically, that can be expected; charging without MagSafe alignment does not establish a charger fault.

Apple also notes that iOS may display a Slow Charger message in some situations. Its charge-speed guidance describes that notification and the factors affecting wireless charging. A newer charger or adapter is an option if you want a configuration Apple lists for faster charging, not a prerequisite for basic charging where the existing combination is supported.
