Place each mesh Wi-Fi node in an open spot between the main router (or another well-connected node) and the area with weak coverage—not in the dead zone itself. Then use your system’s app or mesh test to check the node’s connection and move it until the link is strong.
Why a node should sit between the router and the weak area
A satellite node needs a usable connection to the rest of the mesh to pass Wi-Fi onward. If you place it where the signal is already unusable, it may also struggle to connect upstream. Start partway along the route from the main router toward the problem room, then check the node-to-node link in your system’s app. Google recommends running a mesh test after placement, while TP-Link recommends checking satellite signal strength in its app (Google Home and Nest Help; TP-Link Deco Placement Guide).

How to find a good location
- Identify the weak rooms. Note where connections drop or become unreliable, and locate the main mesh router and any existing nodes.
- Choose an open, elevated candidate spot. Put the node between a well-connected mesh unit and the weak area, rather than inside the dead zone. Avoid cabinets, spots behind TVs, large metal objects, and other substantial obstructions. Linksys and Google both recommend avoiding obstructed placement (Linksys Mesh WiFi Connectivity FAQs; Google Home and Nest Help).
- Reduce likely interference. Keep the node away from sources that may interfere with Wi-Fi. TP-Link specifically identifies microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices as potential sources of 2.4 GHz interference (TP-Link Deco Placement Guide).
- Check the mesh link. Run the system’s mesh test or inspect the node’s connection indicator in its app. If the link is weak, move the node closer to the upstream unit or into a more open position, then test again.
- Retest the weak room. Once the node’s own link is strong, check whether the problem area has improved. Repeat the placement check as needed.
How far apart should mesh nodes be?
There is no universal spacing distance: manufacturers give different recommendations for their own systems, and walls, floors, materials, layout, interference, and node models affect the result. Treat these figures as product-specific starting points, not guaranteed coverage radii.
| System guidance | Manufacturer’s starting point |
|---|---|
| Google Wifi / Nest Wifi points | Google says points work best no more than two rooms apart. Google Home and Nest Help |
| Linksys mesh | Linksys generally recommends keeping child nodes within two rooms or one floor of one another, while limiting intervening walls and obstacles. Linksys Mesh WiFi Connectivity FAQs |
| TP-Link Deco | TP-Link recommends no more than 50 feet between units for best wireless performance; it says spacing can be more flexible with Ethernet backhaul. The page was last updated May 8, 2026. TP-Link Deco range guidance |
| ASUS ZenWiFi | ASUS suggests 10–15 meters between nodes. This is ZenWiFi guidance, not a general rule for all mesh systems. The page was last updated August 5, 2024. ASUS whole-home mesh Wi-Fi guidance |
These recommendations use different units and product contexts, so do not treat them as directly interchangeable. The connection quality shown by your own system is the practical check: a node that is within a suggested distance can still have a poor link through walls or interference.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
What to change when a node reports a weak connection
- Move it closer to the main router or another well-connected node.
- Try a more open position, away from cabinets, TVs, large metal objects, and other substantial obstructions.
- Raise it off the floor if it is currently placed low down.
- Retest after each move so you can tell which placement improved the link.
Distance, walls and floors, metal, room layout, and interference can all affect the node’s connection. Reposition existing equipment before adding hardware; Google recommends considering another point if moving the current points still leaves weak areas (Google Home and Nest Help).
When Ethernet backhaul makes sense
If your mesh model supports Ethernet backhaul and you can run cable between units, a wired link can avoid relying on a wireless node-to-node connection. TP-Link describes wired backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for Deco. ASUS notes that wireless is simpler to set up, while Ethernet requires cabling (TP-Link Deco Placement Guide; ASUS whole-home mesh Wi-Fi guidance).

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Check your exact system and model before planning a wired connection: Ethernet backhaul is not established as an option for every mesh product. With a wired link, wireless spacing matters less for that backhaul connection, but placement still matters for the node’s coverage of nearby devices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When to add another node
Consider another compatible node only after trying better placement and checking the mesh link. Add one if the current nodes connect well but a weak area remains, and confirm compatibility with your system first. There is no universal ideal node count; the home layout and the mesh test determine whether another point is useful.
