Neither type is automatically more efficient. A freezerless refrigerator can use less energy than a refrigerator-freezer in a particular model comparison, but the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) treats them as separate product classes and does not establish a universal winner. Compare the current models’ annual energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh), while accounting for capacity, features, and whether you will need a separate freezer.
What counts as a freezerless refrigerator?
In DOE’s residential appliance standards, the relevant category is called an “all-refrigerator”; “freezerless refrigerator” is common consumer wording for it. A refrigerator-freezer combines refrigerator and freezer compartments. DOE sets separate maximum-energy-use equations for all-refrigerators—including manual-defrost and automatic-defrost types—and for several refrigerator-freezer classes. Those equations define regulatory limits by class; they are not measurements of every product on sale and do not show that one category always uses less energy. DOE product-class standards

Models within either category can differ in size, design, and features. A freezerless model also does not provide the freezer capacity your household may need, so include any separate freezer in the comparison.

- Check annual energy use. Find the kWh/year figure on the current energy information for each model. Compare the actual models rather than assuming that a category label predicts consumption.
- Match capacity and installation format. Keep size and form reasonably similar. Comparing a much larger refrigerator with a smaller one will not tell you which design is more efficient for equivalent storage.
- Account for configuration and features. Freezer placement, automatic ice makers, and through-the-door dispensers can affect energy use. DOE’s kitchen-appliance guide gives historical general comparisons, not a substitute for current model specifications. DOE’s refrigerator and freezer guide
- Include the whole household setup. If a freezerless refrigerator means buying or keeping a separate freezer, factor in its energy use, purchase cost, and usable storage. Also consider your local electricity rate and the upfront price of each option.
- Consider lifetime cost, not just the efficiency label. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) says an efficient product is cost-effective when lifetime energy savings, discounted to present value, exceed any additional upfront cost. DOE FEMP energy-efficient products guidance
What DOE’s example figures do—and do not—show
In 2023 guidance, DOE FEMP gave an example for an 18.1-cubic-foot, top-freezer, automatic-defrost refrigerator: its ENERGY STAR case was listed at 363.5 kWh/year, versus 404 kWh/year for the less-efficient case. The figures illustrate an efficiency comparison within that refrigerator type; they are not a test of an all-refrigerator against a refrigerator-freezer. The table’s price assumptions were in 2022 dollars. DOE FEMP residential refrigerator guidance

DOE’s buyer guide also reports that top-freezer models used 10%–25% less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side models, and that automatic ice makers and through-the-door dispensers increased energy use by 14%–20%. These are historical generalized comparisons. They concern configuration and features—not freezerless refrigerators versus refrigerator-freezers—so check current energy information for the exact models you are considering. - Choose based on measured use if your priority is energy consumption: compare annual kWh for similarly sized models with comparable features.
- Include separate-freezer demand if your household freezes food regularly. A freezerless refrigerator may require another appliance, changing the combined energy use and cost.
- Weigh space and usable storage if kitchen dimensions or the mix of fresh and frozen food matters more than the appliance category alone.
- Compare purchase price and electricity rates to estimate operating cost in your location. A lower-kWh model may not be the lower-lifetime-cost choice if its upfront premium outweighs the savings.
Without current, similarly sized model data for both categories, there is no evidence-based percentage advantage to assign to freezerless refrigerators as a group. The defensible answer is model-specific: compare current annual kWh and evaluate the complete storage setup your household will use.
