Yes. A compatible phone can connect to a cellular plan using only an eSIM, with no plastic SIM card inserted. An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the device, but two conditions still apply: the exact device and regional version must support eSIM, and the carrier must offer eSIM activation for that device, country and plan. Setup is normally completed online through carrier activation, a transfer, a QR code, an app or manual details. Have Wi-Fi or a hotspot ready because downloading the carrier profile usually needs an internet connection. Travelers also need an unlocked phone when using another provider abroad.
What is an eSIM, and why is a physical card unnecessary?
An eSIM is a programmable SIM embedded in a phone, tablet or other supported cellular device. Instead of inserting a removable chip, the carrier downloads a service profile to the device’s built-in eSIM hardware. Apple describes it as “a digital SIM built into your device—no card required,” while Samsung describes Galaxy eSIM as mobile-data service without a physical SIM card.

The eSIM does not eliminate the need for a carrier account or plan. It replaces the removable card as the way the network identifies and authorizes your line. If the profile is active and the plan is valid, the phone can make calls, send messages and use data according to that plan, even though the SIM tray is empty.
What must be true before an eSIM will work?
Both the device and the service provider must support the same eSIM arrangement. A phone can contain eSIM hardware yet be unsupported by a particular carrier, plan or regional software version.

Check the exact device model and region
- Use the full model number, not just a family name such as “Galaxy” or “iPhone.” Hardware and eSIM availability can differ between regional variants.
- Check the manufacturer’s current specifications or support page for eSIM capability.
- Confirm that the device has cellular hardware. A Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot use an eSIM for mobile service.
Confirm carrier and plan support
Ask the intended carrier whether it can activate your exact device by eSIM in your country and on your chosen plan. Carrier directories are organized by country or region and activation method, so a carrier that supports eSIM in one market may not support it for every model or plan elsewhere.
Check whether the phone is unlocked
An unlocked phone is required when you want to add a different provider’s service, particularly a travel eSIM. On an iPhone, Apple says to open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock; No SIM Restrictions indicates that the phone is unlocked. Other manufacturers and carriers use different checks, so follow their instructions.
How can I tell whether my phone supports eSIM?
Start with the maker’s support information, then verify with the carrier. Do not treat a brand-wide compatibility list as proof for your particular regional model.
- Record the model number and country or region where the phone was sold.
- Look for an eSIM or EID entry in the phone’s settings and in the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Contact the carrier and ask specifically about eSIM activation for that model, market and plan.
- Follow any carrier eligibility check. For example, AT&T Prepaid says an EID indicates eSIM capability for its process; it says a device without an EID needs a physical SIM for that service. That is a carrier-specific check, not a universal rule for every network.
The EID is a device identifier used for eSIM provisioning. Seeing one is useful evidence that the hardware supports eSIM, but carrier approval is still required.
How do you activate an eSIM without inserting a card?
The exact screens vary by device and provider. The carrier decides which activation method is available and may require an account password, identity check or confirmation code.

Carrier activation or an automatic transfer
Some carriers push the profile directly during setup, while others support a transfer from an existing phone. Keep both phones nearby, connected to power and the internet, and follow the on-screen approval prompts. Do not erase the old phone or remove its service until the new line has connected and you have tested calls or data.

- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
- Open the cellular settings and choose the option to add an eSIM or mobile plan.
- Use the camera to scan the QR code supplied by the carrier.
- Enter a confirmation code if the carrier requests one.
- Wait for the profile to download, then select which line handles data, calls and messages if the phone offers more than one line.
A QR code is normally intended for one activation. If it has expired or already been used, ask the provider for a replacement rather than repeatedly scanning it.
Carrier app or activation link
A provider may send an install link or require its app. Install the app from the device’s official app store, sign in to the correct account and approve the cellular-plan download. Keep the app and browser open until the phone reports that the plan is active.
Manual entry
When a QR code is unavailable, the carrier can supply an SM-DP+ address, activation code or other details for manual entry. Copy each value exactly, including capitalization and punctuation. Manual fields differ between providers, so do not substitute values from another plan.
Device-specific examples
Apple documents carrier activation, Quick Transfer, QR-code scanning, a provider app or link and manual entry for supported iPhones. Samsung documents simple setup, QR-code and manual-entry routes for supported Galaxy devices. The labels and menu locations can change with software updates; use the provider’s current instructions if they differ from a generic guide.

Do you need Wi-Fi to set up an eSIM?
Usually, yes in practical terms: plan to have Wi-Fi or a hotspot available while the phone downloads the eSIM profile and contacts the carrier. Apple tells users setting up a new iPhone to connect to Wi-Fi or a hotspot, while noting that some eSIM-only iPhone models in certain countries or regions can activate without Wi-Fi. Therefore, Wi-Fi is common but not an absolute rule for every device and market.
If activation stalls, move to a reliable network, turn off any VPN that blocks the carrier’s activation service, restart the phone and try again. If the carrier says the profile was already issued, stop retrying and ask support whether it needs to be released or reissued.
Can you travel with only an eSIM and no physical SIM?
Yes, provided the phone supports eSIM, the travel provider supports that device and country, and the phone is unlocked when the travel plan comes from a different provider. Apple describes both local and worldwide travel eSIM options, but the terms belong to each plan rather than to eSIM technology generally.
Check these terms before buying

Install timing is plan-specific. If the provider permits early installation, you can download the profile on home Wi-Fi and leave it switched off until arrival; read the provider’s validity rule so installation does not start the clock unexpectedly.

On supported models, you can keep a home line and a travel line active together. Apple says some iPhone models support two active eSIMs. This behavior is not universal: model, software, carrier and plan determine whether two eSIMs can remain active and which line handles data.

Before departure, label the lines clearly, choose the travel line for cellular data and review the home carrier’s roaming settings. Disable data roaming on the home line if your carrier’s terms require it, while leaving the home line available for incoming calls or texts only when you understand the charges.

Most failures come from a mismatch between the device, carrier, account or activation information. Work through these checks in order.
- “No eSIM” or no Add eSIM option: Recheck the exact regional model and software version. A physical SIM slot does not prove that eSIM is supported, and an EID check alone does not prove carrier eligibility.
- QR code will not scan: Increase screen brightness, display the code on another screen, or request manual activation details. Confirm that the code belongs to your account and has not been used.
- Profile downloads but has no service: Restart the phone, verify that the intended line is turned on and check the carrier’s coverage and account status. Contact the provider if it must complete activation on its network.
- Travel eSIM is rejected: Check the phone’s lock status, destination coverage and whether the plan supports your device’s regional variant.
- Transfer stops midway: Keep the old and new phones close, connected to power and Wi-Fi, and do not erase the old profile until the carrier confirms completion.
Keep the carrier’s order number, QR code, activation details and confirmation code. Support can use them to identify a failed or duplicate provisioning attempt.

Neither format is universally better. An eSIM is convenient when you want to activate service remotely, add a travel line without finding a store or use a phone that has no SIM tray. A physical SIM can be simpler when moving service between older compatible phones or when a carrier does not support eSIM for your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a travel eSIM before I leave home?
Often yes, if the provider allows pre-installation, but validity may begin at installation, first network connection or a specified date. Read that plan’s activation rule before downloading it so you do not consume travel days early.
Will adding a travel eSIM automatically give me a second phone number?
No. Many travel offers are data-only and provide no number for calls or texts. A second number exists only when the specific plan includes voice or SMS service.

Can a Wi-Fi-only tablet use an eSIM?
No. The tablet must include cellular radio hardware and eSIM support; a Wi-Fi-only model cannot connect to a mobile network through an eSIM.
What information will carrier support ask for if activation fails?
Have your device model, EID, account details, order number, QR code or activation code and any error message ready. Those details let the provider distinguish a device-compatibility problem from a profile that needs reissuing.
