Yes. A VPN works without incognito mode, and incognito mode works without a VPN. They address different privacy concerns: a VPN routes covered internet traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN provider, while incognito limits browser information saved on your device during that private session. Use a VPN when you want to protect covered traffic from observers on a local network or your ISP; use incognito when you want fewer browsing traces left in the browser on a shared device. You can use both at once, but neither makes you anonymous.
What is the difference between a VPN and incognito mode?
A VPN changes how covered internet traffic travels across the network. Incognito changes what the browser keeps on the device for a session. They operate at different layers, so turning one on does not turn the other on or make it unnecessary in every situation.

|---|---|---|
| What does it affect? | Network traffic routed through the VPN tunnel. | Browser records and site data associated with the private session. |
| Which observer is it aimed at? | It can conceal traffic content and your apparent IP address from an ISP or local Wi-Fi observer, subject to what the VPN routes. | It reduces what another person using the device can find in that browser’s history and session data. |
| What is the scope? | Potentially the whole device and its apps if the VPN is configured device-wide; otherwise, only traffic sent through it. | The private browser window or session, not other apps on the device. |
| Who must you trust? | The VPN provider becomes a party able to see where you have been online, according to Mozilla’s guidance. | The browser still handles the session, and websites can still identify you through sign-in or other identifying information. |
| Does it make you anonymous? | No. The FTC says a VPN app generally does not make a user entirely anonymous. | No. A site can know who you are if you sign in, as Google explains. |
Mozilla describes a VPN as a secure tunnel that conceals an IP address and encrypts traffic between the device and VPN provider. Incognito does not create that tunnel. Conversely, a VPN does not erase browser history that was already saved locally.
Do you need incognito if you already have a VPN?
Not necessarily. If your only goal is to protect network traffic routed through a VPN from an ISP or someone watching the local Wi-Fi connection, incognito is not required for that VPN function. Add incognito when you also want to limit records the browser leaves on the device during the session.

Use a VPN for network privacy
For example, you might use a VPN on a network you do not control because you do not want the local network observer to see the contents of the traffic carried through the tunnel. The VPN shifts trust: the provider, rather than simply the ISP or Wi-Fi operator, becomes a party that could track where you go online. Choose a provider carefully and read its privacy information; the word “VPN” by itself is not proof that an app is trustworthy or that all traffic is protected.
Use incognito for fewer local browser traces
On a shared computer, incognito can help keep a browsing session out of the browser’s ordinary history and discard session site data and cookies when all Incognito windows are closed. This is a device-level convenience, not a way to conceal activity from the network. Mozilla cautions that private browsing does not stop an ISP from logging activity or websites from seeing physical location.
Use both for both goals
You can leave the VPN running normally and open a private browser window. The VPN addresses covered network traffic; the private window addresses browser data for that session. Neither setting overrides the limits of the other, and signing into an account still tells that site who you are.

How do you use a VPN and incognito mode together?
There is no special pairing setting: start the VPN separately, then open a private window in your browser. Exact VPN app labels and browser menus vary by device and software version, so the following steps describe the sequence rather than a particular vendor’s interface.
- Choose the right VPN app. Install an app from a provider you are willing to trust, and review its privacy policy and permissions. The FTC warns that some VPN apps may not encrypt all traffic and some may share information with third parties.
- Connect the VPN. Open the VPN app and use its connection control. Wait for the app to indicate that the connection is active before starting the activity you want routed through it.
- Check what the VPN covers. If your aim is to protect traffic beyond the browser, confirm the app is set up for device-wide routing where available. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends full-device VPN routing where possible to reduce the chance that traffic leaks outside the tunnel.
- Open your browser’s private window. Use the browser’s Incognito or private-browsing command. This is a separate browser session; enabling it does not change the VPN connection.
- Close all private windows when finished. Chrome says Incognito discards session site data and cookies after all Incognito windows are closed. Closing one window while another remains open does not end the whole Incognito session.
- Clear existing records separately if needed. Private mode does not remove history already stored in a normal browser session. Use the browser’s history controls to remove that older local record.
What does a VPN hide, and what can it still reveal?
A VPN can hide your device’s apparent IP address from sites by presenting the VPN connection’s address instead, and it can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider. That protection applies only to traffic that actually travels through the tunnel. A VPN is not a universal invisibility switch.
- Your ISP or local Wi-Fi provider: A VPN can obscure traffic content from these network observers for traffic carried through the tunnel. The FTC warns that this does not make you anonymous.
- The VPN provider: Your provider handles the tunneled connection, so it is a new party to trust. Mozilla notes that VPN providers can track where users have been online.
- The website you visit: Websites can still identify you if you sign in. Cookies, account details, and other identifiers can also associate activity with you; a private window does not change that when you log in.
- Other apps and untunneled connections: If the VPN only handles selected traffic, or some traffic escapes the tunnel, those connections do not receive the same VPN protection. Full-device routing where possible can reduce this exposure.
- People who use your device: A VPN does not erase local browser history. Incognito is the relevant option for limiting browser records created during a new session, while history controls are needed for records already saved.
Does incognito hide your history from your browser or ISP?
Incognito is designed to limit what the browser saves locally from that private session, not to make browsing invisible to the browser, your network, or the sites you visit. Chrome says session site data and cookies are discarded when all Incognito windows close. Mozilla summarizes the purpose more narrowly: “Incognito mode keeps your browser history private, and that’s pretty much it.”

That distinction matters when you are deciding what “history” means. Someone opening the browser later may not see the private session in the ordinary history list, but that does not mean an ISP or the visited website could not observe activity. A VPN and incognito address different sides of that problem; neither retroactively removes records already held elsewhere.
What should you check if a VPN does not seem to protect everything?
Start by identifying the traffic and observer you care about. If the browser is protected but another app is not, the issue may be the VPN’s scope rather than incognito mode. If your concern is browser history on the device, a VPN is not the setting that removes it.
- Some apps appear outside the VPN: Check whether the VPN is configured for full-device routing or only selected apps. The NCSC recommends full-device routing where possible to reduce traffic leakage.
- The VPN is connected but you are unsure what it covers: Review the VPN app’s settings and documentation. A connection indicator alone does not establish that every app or connection is routed through the tunnel.
- You expected a site not to recognize you: Check whether you signed in. Google explicitly notes Incognito does not prevent you from telling a website who you are.
- Old browsing entries remain: Use the browser’s history controls. Starting a VPN or private session does not delete records saved earlier.
- You are evaluating a VPN app: Review requested permissions, the provider’s privacy terms, and whether it describes traffic handling clearly. The FTC cautions that some VPN apps may fail to encrypt all traffic or share information with third parties.
Which should you turn on?
Choose based on who you want to limit and where the relevant record or traffic exists. A shared-device concern points to the browser; a network-observer concern points to a VPN; both concerns can justify using both tools.

| Your concern | What to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone else may inspect this browser’s local history after the session | Incognito or the browser’s private mode | It limits local records for that session and clears session site data and cookies after all private windows close. |
| Your ISP or local Wi-Fi operator may observe traffic | A trustworthy VPN, configured to cover the traffic | It routes covered traffic through an encrypted connection to the provider, shifting trust to that provider. |
| You want fewer local session traces and network protection | VPN plus incognito | The tools act independently on network routing and browser storage. |
| You want a website not to know your identity | Neither tool guarantees this | Signing in can identify you, and neither mode guarantees anonymity. |
For a single goal, avoid treating the tools as substitutes. Incognito is not a VPN, and a VPN is not a browser-history cleanup tool. If you need to protect several apps rather than just browser traffic, verify that your VPN routes the full device where possible.

Will a VPN work in Chrome if I do not open an Incognito window?
Yes. A VPN connection and Chrome’s normal browsing mode are independent. Your regular Chrome windows can use the VPN connection, while Chrome continues to manage local browser data according to its normal settings.
Does closing an Incognito tab end the private session?
No. Chrome’s stated cleanup point is when all Incognito windows are closed, not when one tab or window closes while others remain open.
Best Value
Can my employer or school see what I do in a private window?
Private browsing alone does not stop a network operator from observing activity, and it does not guarantee privacy on a managed device. What an organization can see depends on its network and device controls; the supplied official guidance establishes that private mode does not block ISP logging.
Does a VPN remove my old browsing history?
No. A VPN changes the route for covered network traffic; it does not erase records already saved in the browser. Use the browser’s history controls for existing local entries.
