Sometimes—but a work VPN is not permission to work from another country. Use it abroad only if your employer has approved the destination, dates, work activities, device, and services. The VPN can protect an authorized connection; it cannot override company policy, destination-specific restrictions, or access controls. Before you leave, get confirmation from HR and IT or security, then follow the organization’s instructions for its managed device, VPN, and authentication.

What does a work VPN do when you are abroad?

A work VPN is a security measure for an approved connection to your organization’s systems. It can protect information as it travels over an untrusted network. The UK government’s enterprise IT guidance describes a device-wide VPN as providing the best level of protection for information in transit over such a network.

That protection is only one part of the decision to work overseas. A VPN connection does not grant employment approval, establish that a destination is permitted, or guarantee that a work service will accept a login. Your employer may restrict access by country, account, device, or the sensitivity of the data involved. Some destinations or activities may also raise legal, sanctions, export-control, or compliance questions.

Think of authorization and connection security as separate checks: first confirm that the trip and work are allowed; then use the organization’s approved method to connect. Passing one check does not mean you have passed the other.

Can I work remotely from another country?

Possibly, but the answer depends on your employer, role, destination, dates, work activity, and the information you will handle. Ask for approval before traveling rather than assuming that a working VPN login means the arrangement is permitted.

The UK Cabinet Office’s Guidance 1.4, section 19, says users must have the requisite approvals under their local organizational HR and security policy before undertaking international remote working. That is UK government guidance, not a universal rulebook for private employers. Your own organization’s policies and applicable local requirements determine what you may do.

Approval should cover the actual trip

When you ask, identify the country, travel dates, planned work, systems you need, and the kind of information you expect to access. A general approval to work remotely at home—or approval for a different country or set of dates—may not answer whether this trip is allowed. Ask HR and IT or security whether approval needs to be recorded in a particular system or confirmed in writing.

Why the destination and work matter

Travel risk depends on more than whether a VPN can connect. The U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center advises travelers to consider local law, sanctions, and export controls. The information you handle and your role can also affect the organization’s decision. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance notes that long-term teleworking outside Canada can put an organization at risk; it does not establish a single duration or rule that applies to every employer or traveler.

Do not infer that a destination is acceptable just because coworkers have traveled there or because the login page works. Ask your employer to assess your specific circumstances, and check current local requirements where relevant.

What should I confirm with my employer before departure?

Get clear instructions on approval, equipment, authentication, data handling, and what to do if access fails. The following checklist combines the practical controls recommended in Canadian foreign-telework guidance with UK approval guidance and travel-security advice from the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Approval: Ask HR and IT or security to confirm that your destination, dates, work activities, and needed services are approved. Keep the confirmation and any conditions where you can consult them while traveling.
  • Access limits: Ask whether access will be restricted by country, account, device, or data sensitivity. Find out which services you are authorized to use and whether any work must wait until you return.
  • Equipment and setup: Confirm which managed device, employer-provided VPN client, and authentication method to use. Ask whether you need a travel device or restricted account, and whether any setup must be completed before departure.
  • Information and compliance: Check whether the data or software you will handle is subject to destination-country law, sanctions, export controls, or other employer compliance requirements. Do not assume that a VPN changes those requirements.
  • Security and incident reporting: Learn how to report a lost device, suspicious behavior, or failed access while away. Make sure you know the organization’s approved contact route if you cannot reach a normal work service.
  • Work location and network: Plan a private place to work and ask what network access method your employer expects. Canadian guidance suggests using a corporate mobile hotspot rather than local Wi-Fi where feasible; follow your organization’s specific instructions.

If you cannot obtain a clear answer before departure, do not treat the VPN as a workaround. Ask whether you should avoid work, limit activity to specifically approved tasks, or change the plan.

Which device, VPN, and authentication method should I use?

Use the organization’s approved setup, not a substitute chosen for convenience. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance recommends an approved device with a secure VPN, encryption, and multifactor authentication (MFA) for foreign telework. Depending on the setting, it also suggests secure webmail as an additional protection.

Use the managed device and employer’s VPN

A corporately managed device and employer-provided VPN are selected and configured for the organization’s access controls. A consumer VPN is not interchangeable: it may route your connection through a different service, but that does not authorize access to work systems or make a blocked destination acceptable. Do not use one to disguise your location or bypass a company restriction.

Keep authentication and encryption in the approved flow

Use the employer’s designated MFA and authentication method, along with the encryption controls required for the device and services. If you are unsure whether a method will work abroad, ask IT before traveling; do not improvise with another account or authentication route. Your employer may need to assess the device, connection, and destination together.

VPN configuration belongs to IT

Organizations may make decisions about whether traffic is routed through their systems and what they can monitor or restrict. Australian guidance warns that split tunneling can create additional risk. That is a configuration decision for the organization’s IT or security team, not a setting for an employee to change in order to make travel access work.

How can I work safely if the trip is approved?

Use a private work location, follow your employer’s network guidance, and keep screens and devices away from people who should not see or handle them. A secure connection does not protect information from someone looking over your shoulder or from careless handling of a device.

Choose a private place for sensitive work

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends private spaces for work and limits work in unsecured places to low-sensitivity tasks. UK government guidance warns against exposing classified screens to people in public spaces. Follow your employer’s rules for the information you handle; if the work is sensitive and you cannot work privately, ask whether to defer it or move to a suitable location.

A laptop privacy screen filter may help reduce visual exposure, but it is only an aid to visual privacy. It does not replace approval, an approved device, or the employer’s VPN and other security controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a connection your organization accepts

Follow the employer’s directions for connecting, including any preference for a corporate mobile hotspot instead of local Wi-Fi where feasible. Do not assume that a hotel, airport, or other public network is suitable merely because the VPN connects. If the approved connection is unavailable, contact IT for instructions rather than switching to an unapproved service or trying to defeat a block.

Keep device incidents and access problems reportable

Before traveling, know how to contact the organization if a device is lost, you notice suspicious activity, or a service stops accepting your login. If access fails, report the issue through the approved support route. Do not respond by concealing your location, changing VPN settings, or using another person’s account.

Does using a VPN settle the legal or privacy question?

No. A VPN is a connection-security control, not a legal determination. Destination-country requirements, employer rules, data sensitivity, sanctions, and export controls can still matter.

A specific UK GDPR point

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office explains that an employee accessing the same legal entity’s systems while abroad is not automatically making a restricted transfer under the UK GDPR. Its analysis asks whether the UK GDPR applies, whether the organization initiates access to an overseas organization, and whether that recipient is a separate legal entity. In the ICO’s example, an employee uses a work device to access UK systems while on holiday abroad; access to the same entity’s systems is not a restricted transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a specific UK GDPR analysis, not a blanket statement that overseas access has no legal, contractual, or workplace-policy implications. It does not approve a trip or answer how another country’s laws apply. Ask the appropriate employer contact about your situation rather than treating the VPN location or connection as a legal test.

What if the work VPN or service blocks access abroad?

Stop and check with IT or security. A block may reflect an intentional country restriction, an account or device control, or another issue that the organization must diagnose. The available guidance does not establish a universal reason for a particular failed login.

  1. Note the service, approximate time, device, and error message without repeatedly attempting access.
  2. Use the organization’s approved support channel and report your location accurately.
  3. Ask whether the access is allowed from that destination and whether the organization can resolve the issue within its policy.
  4. Wait for instructions. If access is not approved, do not try a consumer VPN, change settings to hide your location, or route around the restriction.

If you cannot reach support, follow any contingency instructions your employer gave you before travel. Do not move sensitive work to a personal account or service unless the organization has explicitly approved that method.

Who makes the decision about which remote-access option to use?

Your employer determines the approved service and configuration; there is no universally interchangeable VPN for an employee to select. When an organization evaluates remote-access arrangements, relevant considerations include authorization, device management, MFA and encryption, whether traffic passes through the organization, destination and data sensitivity, and the organization’s ability to monitor or restrict access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an employee, that means the useful question is not “Which VPN should I buy?” but “What has my employer approved for this trip and this work?” If the answer is unclear, request instructions from HR and IT or security before relying on access abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I log in from abroad if the work VPN connects successfully?

A successful connection only shows that the connection was accepted at that moment; it does not establish that the trip or work is approved. Follow your employer’s policy and any conditions attached to approval.

Does my employer see my real location when I use its VPN?

VPN setups and organizational monitoring vary, so the available guidance does not establish what a particular employer can see. Ask IT or security what information the organization collects and how location-based access controls work.

Does the UK GDPR always treat working abroad as an international data transfer?

No. The ICO’s analysis distinguishes access by an employee to the same legal entity’s systems from a transfer to a separate overseas organization. That specific point does not settle other legal or policy questions about working abroad.
