Yes. Controller vibration and haptic feedback use a separate setting from game, TV, and headset volume, so you can stop the rumble while keeping every sound effect, voice line, and music cue audible. On PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, change the system’s vibration control rather than any audio or mute control. Xbox, PC, Mac, mobile, and individual games use different labels and may require a game-level or controller-software setting.

The exact option may be called Enable Vibration, Vibration Intensity, Controller Vibration, HD Rumble, or User Vibration Feedback. The instructions below separate system-wide controls from per-game settings and explain what to check when a controller still vibrates.

Does turning off haptics mute game audio?

No. Vibration motors, adaptive triggers, and other haptic actuators are controlled independently from the controller speaker, television audio, console volume, and headset output. Turning off a vibration or haptics option removes physical feedback but does not mute explosions, dialogue, menus, or music.

Do not use a volume slider to solve a vibration problem. On a PlayStation controller, for example, the same settings area can contain both a vibration control and Volume (Speaker for Controller); changing one does not change the other. A game can also provide its own vibration setting, which may override or add to the platform-level behavior.

How do you turn off vibration on PS4?

On PS4, disable the system-wide vibration switch. Audio remains unchanged because controller vibration and the controller speaker have separate controls.

  1. From the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Choose Controllers.
  4. Turn Enable Vibration off.

After this change, the controller should not vibrate even when a game has vibration enabled. If you still hear sound from the controller and want to change that separately, use Volume Control (Speaker for Controller) in the same menu. That speaker setting is not required for disabling rumble and should be left alone if you want controller audio.

How do you reduce or disable haptics on PS5?

PS5 places the control under the general controller settings. Sony’s documented option is an intensity control rather than a clearly named universal “Off” switch, so select the lowest available value when you do not see an explicit off choice.

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Open Controller (General).
  4. Find Vibration Intensity and move it to the minimum setting.

The same page separately lists Volume (Speaker for Controller). Leave that volume setting at its current level if you want game audio to continue normally. PS5 games may also expose additional controls for adaptive triggers or other effects; reducing vibration intensity does not necessarily remove every trigger resistance effect.

What if the PS5 still produces a small effect?

Check the game’s own controller or accessibility menu. A title may implement a separate feedback option, or it may distinguish ordinary vibration from trigger effects. Set each unwanted effect to Off or its lowest level, then restart the game so it rereads the controller settings.

How do you turn off vibration on Nintendo Switch?

Switch uses a system-wide Controller Vibration switch. Turning it off applies to all paired controllers, while game audio continues through the television, console, or headset.

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME menu.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Choose Controller Vibration.
  4. Toggle the setting off.

Because this is a global setting, it affects compatible Joy-Con and Pro-style controllers paired with the console. If one controller continues to vibrate, disconnect and pair it again, then confirm that the setting is still off. A game can still have a separate feedback option, so check its controller or accessibility menu when the system switch does not produce the expected result.

Does Switch Lite have controller vibration?

Switch Lite has no built-in vibration hardware in the console itself. A compatible wireless controller connected to Switch Lite can still provide vibration, however, so the system-level setting remains relevant when an external controller is being used.

How do you turn off vibration on Nintendo Switch 2?

On Switch 2, the option is in a differently named settings section but works in the same way: it controls paired controllers without changing audio output.

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers & Accessories.
  3. Find Controller Vibration.
  4. Toggle it off.

The setting applies to all paired controllers. If a particular game continues to provide a physical effect, inspect that game’s own settings for rumble, haptics, trigger effects, or feedback intensity.

Where is the vibration setting on Xbox?

Xbox menu labels and locations can vary with console software and controller type, so avoid relying on an old, fixed button path. Open the console’s current controller or accessibility settings and look for vibration, rumble, or haptic feedback. Set the option to off or reduce its intensity, then check the game’s controller options as well.

Microsoft’s accessibility guidance treats the ability to turn feedback off as an important player control, but the consumer settings page can change as the dashboard is updated. If the console-level option is not visible, use the game’s controller/accessibility menu or the current Xbox support instructions displayed for your console and software version. Do not change master volume or mute settings; those affect audio rather than motor feedback.

What is the difference between system-wide and in-game haptic controls?

A system setting is a broad default for the console and paired controllers. An in-game setting is specific to one title and can divide feedback into several effects, such as ordinary vibration, weapon recoil, adaptive-trigger resistance, or menu feedback.

Use the system setting for a universal change

Choose the platform-level control when you never want the controller to vibrate, when multiple games cause discomfort, or when another person uses the same console. This avoids changing every game individually, although some titles may still expose a separate effect that must be disabled in their own menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the game setting for selective feedback

Keep system vibration enabled if you want it in most games, then disable it only in a particular title. Look under headings such as Controls, Accessibility, Gameplay, or Controller. Some games use “rumble” instead of “haptics.”

For example, EA’s FC 26 accessibility options include User Vibration Feedback with an Off choice, separate from trigger effects. Turning off that game option does not change the console’s audio volume or the vibration behavior of other games.

Why might a controller still vibrate after you disable haptics?

Persistent feedback usually means another layer is still enabled or the connected hardware is not governed by the setting you changed. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Check both levels. Confirm the platform setting and the game’s own vibration, rumble, trigger, or feedback settings.
  2. Identify the effect. Ordinary motor rumble, adaptive-trigger resistance, and controller-speaker sounds can have separate controls.
  3. Confirm the active controller. A second paired controller, an arcade accessory, or a third-party pad may have its own profile or software.
  4. Restart the game. Some titles read controller options only when they launch.
  5. Reconnect the controller. Disconnect wireless pairing or the USB cable, reconnect, and test again.
  6. Check for a profile or firmware utility. PC controller software can apply an effect after the operating system setting has been changed.
  7. Test another game. If only one title vibrates, its own setting or implementation is the likely cause.

Do not assume that a missing effect is an audio failure. A game may simply lack support for the controller’s haptic feature, or the connection may not carry it.

How do haptics work on PC, Mac, and mobile?

There is no single universal haptic switch across computers and phones. Behavior depends on the controller model, operating system, connection method, driver or companion software, and the game.

Windows PCs

Check the game’s controller or accessibility menu first, then inspect the controller manufacturer’s configuration utility. A DualSense controller may require a USB connection for certain haptic features in supported Windows games. If a game does not support the feature, changing an audio setting will not make haptics appear or disappear.

Mac and mobile devices

Controller haptic support is more limited and varies by game and operating system. Sony states that DualSense haptics are unsupported on Mac and mobile in the cited compatibility guidance. A controller can therefore work for buttons and sticks while providing no haptic effect at all.

Cloud, remote-play, and streaming sessions

Streaming can add another compatibility layer. The local device, remote host, app, and controller connection must all pass feedback signals correctly. If vibration is unwanted, disable it in the game and in any controller utility available on the device receiving the controller input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you lower haptics instead of turning them off?

Yes, when the platform or game offers an intensity control. Lowering intensity preserves some physical cues while reducing noise, fatigue, or discomfort. PS5 exposes Vibration Intensity; other platforms and games may offer low, medium, high, or a percentage-style control rather than a simple switch.

Use the lowest level that remains useful, then test a game with frequent impacts. If even low intensity is distracting, choose Off where available. Trigger resistance may need a separate adjustment because it can remain active after ordinary vibration has been reduced.

What should you change if you want audio but no physical feedback?

Leave every audio control unchanged and modify only the feedback controls. This checklist keeps the two functions separate:

  • Keep TV, receiver, console, and headset volume at the level you prefer.
  • Do not enable a master mute or lower the controller-speaker volume unless controller audio itself is a problem.
  • Turn off the platform’s vibration or haptics option.
  • Disable game-specific rumble, user vibration feedback, adaptive triggers, or impact effects if they remain active.
  • Test with a game that normally produces a clear vibration cue.

Which platforms use which labels?

These are the documented control names and scopes for the major consoles covered here. Menu wording can change after firmware updates, but the terms provide the best search targets inside each settings screen.

Platform Setting label Control type Audio affected?
PS4 Enable Vibration System-wide on/off No
PS5 Vibration Intensity System intensity; use minimum when no off choice appears No
Nintendo Switch Controller Vibration Applies to paired controllers No
Nintendo Switch 2 Controller Vibration Applies to paired controllers No
Xbox Vibration, rumble, or haptic feedback wording may vary Check current controller/accessibility and game settings No
PC, Mac, mobile Controller-, driver-, or game-specific Depends on hardware, OS, connection, and title No, unless you change an audio control separately

Are haptics useful for accessibility?

For some players, vibration is helpful feedback; for others, repeated impacts, trigger resistance, or controller noise cause pain, sensory overload, or fatigue. A separate haptics control lets each player keep spoken dialogue and environmental audio while removing the physical stimulus. Shared consoles also benefit because one person can change the feedback preference without altering the household’s audio setup.

When a game offers multiple feedback categories, disable only the effect that causes difficulty. For instance, you may keep a light confirmation rumble while turning off strong impacts or trigger resistance. Save the game’s accessibility profile if the title supports profiles, and recheck it after major updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off controller vibration stop every kind of physical feedback?

Not always. Adaptive-trigger resistance, motion effects, and special accessory feedback can use separate controls from ordinary rumble, so inspect each category in the game and platform settings.

Can I disable haptics for one controller but leave them on for another?

Console system switches commonly apply to all paired controllers. Per-controller differences are more likely through a saved game profile or controller configuration utility, depending on the platform and accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my controller have no vibration even though the setting is enabled?

The game may not support that controller’s haptic features, or the connection may not carry them. On computers and mobile devices, compatibility depends on the operating system, driver, connection type, and title.

Does disabling haptics improve controller battery life?

It can reduce motor and trigger activity, but the amount varies with the controller, game, and wireless use. Treat any battery improvement as secondary; the reliable change is removing the physical feedback.
